Controlled MTB Drops: Skills Challenge Day 23

  • Earlier in the skills challenge, we worked on riding super slow on flat ground. Today, we're going to apply that same drill - but to riding off of an obstacle. We started riding over obstacles a few days ago, and now we can turn around and practicing riding off of them with intention, instead of just rolling off quickly.
Spread your elbows and knees wide to make your bike and body the most balanced and controlled they can be - and don't forget to keep your hands wide on the bars (with just one finger on the brake) to maximize your bike control.

What helps me a lot riding steep Hiking trails is the following exercise:
    1. Ride down the steps as slow as you can
    2. When you are confident to do this, stop in the middle of the stairs and keep the trackstand
    3. When this works -> try to switch your backwheel and frontwheel from side to side, while keeping standing on the stairs
    4. You could practice this also while standing with your backwheel on one or more pallets, and switch your wheels from side to side without rolling.
This helped me a lot to ride down steep trails in the alps with a lot of switchbacks.
Its more easy with a smaller bike and smaller wheels in my opinion.

Thanks for this tip! I've been practicing this and I definitely think it will help me with steep, rocky switchbacks. It's great to simulate the situation without a lung-busting climb or 2-hour drive!

That's one of my favorites dropping of something and never rattling the chain

Stealthy drops are the best, agreed!

I like it when gravity does all the work for me.

I'm going to need to use a bigger pallet!
Well, I'll just use the deck or the trials garden or the pallet and something else, but that little one will not fit both wheels on it...

Launch the deck! I had to pull in Scrappy for this one, too...staircases also work well for this drill.

I did a bunch of slow stairs yesterday, some not as slow as I wanted because they were wet with a tight 180 turn at the bottom. Hope to get out today and ride some really slow drops. Should I check that the bottom bracket clears the edge of the drop before trying this, or do I get extra credit for sliding over the edge on my bash guard?

Extra credit for the bash guard! :)
