2018 Chinese PLA Type 17 Individual Heating Meal MRE Review Taste Testing

  • A direct upgrade to the Type 09 Individual Soldier's Self Heating Meal, the Type 17 combines both practical and palatable in their newest standard issued field ration. With the newest Type 18 (up next for PLA) being a direct upgrade to the Type 13, this Type 17 is again, the answer to the much needed changes from that older Type 09. With freeze dried and pickled vegetables, an extremely powerful FRH, compressed food bar, dried fruit, and a delicious curry chicken & rice, this really turned out to be a well made ration that breaches into the realms of a US MRE & South Korean ration in terms of food quality, effectiveness, and tough packaging.
    A notable improvement.

    I think I figured out why this is so entertaining! It combines all of youtube's most popular types of videos.
    - It's a "box opening."
    - it's also a form of loot box because you don't know what's in each MRE.
    - Steve comments on each item almost as if it's a food review.
    - And people enjoy looking into culture's that are foreign to them. The MRE's are a perfect way to do that.

  • @fairwinds610
    @fairwinds610 Před 4 lety +1027

    During my Navy career, I was never issued anything like an MRE, but I used to buy the boxed C-Rations at the commissary at NCS Kodiak in 1970. They cost me $.59 per meal and I had a dozen of them stashed under my bunk for emergencies. The emergencies were mostly blizzards and a half-mile walk to the chow-hall! Lately, I've been buying cases of MREs from the local "prepper" store; some of them are Desert-Storm vintage but I've never opened a bad one. I really like your attitude and your ability to consume all of those strange foreign rations. Very entertaining!

    This aligns with Chinese traditional foods very well. Lots of savory, little candy/sugar...food is always hot(my father still heats his milk before pouring cereal!) Every single item here I recognize(besides the bar), the spiced mushroom is an acuired taste...the olives of chinese food. The extra salt intake is used because of the very high temperatures in China(salt is needed after being lost from sweat).

      Until a week passed and he never picked up his checks (his last work day was Thurs, one more day and he would have had one of his check) Then his brother came one day looking for him. It's weird, we weren't best friends but it's amazing how much you connect with someone when you work 8 hours a day for 4 months. And just the unknown aspect, was he killed? Did he drown? Did he fly back home without telling anyone? (Then why leave the check?)

For eg. the chocolate & mushrooms provide adequate magnesium, rice instead of grain ensures less bloating & easier digestion out in the field. The raisin bar provides enough fiber, & the soup takes care of the potassium.

    As for the PLA MRE improvement over the years, I think it's still has something to do with the tradition of having a proper field kitchen whenever they can. The 2008 earthquake in Sichuan really had a lot of influence on the PLA MRE development. During that disaster, PLA/Armed Police Force quite often found themselves with no water/electricity and the location they need to reach could only be reached on foot after hours if not days of walking. The local civilians really helped quite a lot for their food supply(most cities still have abundant food, they needed mostly medical supply and just more people for rescuing). I think they then realized the limitation of relying heavily on field kitchens(which are great. Basically ten times better than Chinese foods in the US), and started spending more time and effort on developing better MREs.

This unfortunately causes many Chinese citizens to be short sighted, and credit all these acheivements to the CCP so they are complacent with the authoritarian government. Dissaperances are usually due to kidnapping and human trafficing as opposed to the government, and even that is very rare thesedays, unless you live in very rural western China. There's said to be a human trafficing ring between China, Thailand, and laos.
