2018 Chinese PLA Type 13 MRE Individual Self Heating Meal Ready to Eat Worst Ration Taste Testing

  • This Chinese Type 13 MRE menu 3 is truly one of the worst quality rations for a large military in the world. Bulky, overweight, low quality and half of it inedible completely. Chinese PLA pull it off again with yet another substandard ration. But this time they really pull off that notion more than ever. And this is not my first time running into this issue with these PLA rations. But it's certainly the last time I will ever be foolish enough to consume any green Chinese food. I ate a 112 year old US Army Emergency Ration this month (Still editing - 6 hours footage on 2 cameras..) and did not get sick... I ate this Type 13 menu 3 and got sick. Let that sink in a little on China's quality control on food for their rations.

You could save those K-rations or C-Rations for like 200+ years and would still be perfectly consumable so long as you know how to properly store them. Theoretically, these newer rations should be able to last much much longer. Though I guess in this case, ingredients matter too.

While the passage of time does make it sound, disgusting, there’s old rations were probably made with mostly “natural” stuff. Whereas the Chinese ones have a high likelihood of using some kind of inedible chemicals substituted as cheaper alternatives. This is the country that spawned fake eggs, if you heard. Using any chemical, that would give the correct textures and look. Using chickens for labor wasn’t cheap enough apparently.

5:09 Can confirm (as a Cantonese speaker) that the veg in the chow mein is what is known as 雪菜 (syut choi). It’s a kind of pickled mustard green common in the south of China and is … well … an acquired taste. (I can’t stand it myself. Lot of older folks swear by it though.) It’s probably supposed to smell that way, but the fact that it’s been sitting in a sealed bag packed together with mushy noodles probably doesn’t help.
You can get a jar of this stuff at any decent Chinese supermarket if you’re brave enough.

That's what fucks with my head, like I get it, maybe China's Quality Control is sub-par at best but you'd think even the most basic ration can survive a few months on a shelf somewhere.
MREs of the vast majority of armed forces are expected to have, at the bare minimum, a shelf life of a year or two considering they often sit supply depots on shelves in the event of war or for training exercises in the field at smaller bases where cooking facilities are smaller in size and can only prep one hot meal a day give or take.
The fact that all of these are inducing food poisoning to such a degree genuinely makes me feel pity for PRC soldiers. Like I've joked for years that if North Korea invaded the south, the moment they actually came into a city that had real food and saw what their southern counterparts had on their tables on the daily they would likely mutiny in outrage or at bare minimum desire for change in lifestyle.
If the Chinese saw how American troops eat just out of MREs, they might start looking at their own officers suspiciously as well. It's *also* worth pointing out that "Chinese Takeout" cuisine (from American restaurants) have actually been gaining traction in the last decade or two over in China. It's not unheard of for restaurants in China to sell shit that most "Takeout" joints made here in the US just to appease American palets.

There are some varieties of apples that come straight off the vine with more preservation ability than this specially made food preservation pack. How shameful can one get? I'm so curious about the production cycle that facilitated this. Was it poorly thought out cost cutting as we probably suspect, or was there some serious mistake here? Keeping your troops from not starving is kind of important if you want to maintain some sort of military force

      @Rixoli Před 2 lety +41

      @@jek__ That's what rattles me
Like I get it, you want to cut corners if it's do-able, do it. China has a substantially larger military to feed and keep stock for. Yet even the rations that they have on hand are sub-par in preservatives, meaning they have to replace them *WAY* more often.
When I was in, honest to god I actually witnessed an MRE somehow get muddled in with modern supplies that had been packaged in the 1960s....served in 2008
The contents were not only edible, the Sgt. in question actually remarked the only thing it was missing was hotsauce (I forget what it was he had) but we had it in our impromptu mess hall. problem solved in his book.
Dude ate nearly 50 year old rations during a training exercise and trooped on with 0 intestinal issues afterwards.

“The green,” aka xue cai (sheh-TSAI), is a type of Chinese pickles made of the leaves of brown mustard (brassica juncea). Best known for its resilience against extreme weather conditions, it’s able to grow under the snow in winter. As it’s from the mustard family, it contains _allyl isothiocyanate_ which gives it the potent and pungent *taste* and *smell* which is also found in horseradish, wasabi and other strong flavored vegetables. Amplified by the pickling, fermentation process, those earthy, sulfuric and possibly metallic tastes and smells are only made stronger. With regards to the green *color* on the noodle and pork though, worry not that they seem to be chlorophyll which is the compound that gives plants the green color. Mustard leaves have plenty of it, just like any other leafy greens.
On the plus side, none of that should naturally be a problem. This vegetable is chosen presumably due to its outstanding nutritional values as well. It is one of the few leafy greens that provides both water and fat soluble vitamins (vitamins B & C and A, K & E) and minerals (Ca, Mg, K…) in high amounts with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, I do question the quality of “made-in-China” which is usually a red flag for food poisoning. It would’ve been a surprise to me that anyone who hasn’t got sick from eating food sourced and manufactured in China. Lol, brave of you for body testing their ‘bio weapon’.
Ps: the (spicy) pickled cabbage is called “pao cai” (PAW-TSAI) if you wanna try it out another time. Or, more accurately, _Sichuan_ pao cai.

To answer those questions about why the Chinese troops don't revolt upon eating these MREs, the short answer is the common troops rarely eat them.
PLA hasn't have a war for over 40 years, and the only chance when soldiers need to eat outside their camps is when going on UN peace keeping missions or attending military exercises. Even at these instances, their standard doctrine is to deploy mobile battlefield kitchens at regimental level. Many companies even have their own cooking squads (who are actually professional cooks). The only ones in the Chinese army who might need to eat any MREs are spec ops or paratroopers during exercises (if I remember right they are not issued self-heating rations). The Chinese army has only been doing MREs for around 10 years, and even today, the more traditional "compressed biscuit" and canned rations are still more widely issued as on-the-go food. Majority of the soldiers properly went through their entire military career without even trying one of these.
Not that any of these are valid excuses for manufacturing such shitty MRE packs, but one thing some of you probably got right is that a main reason why these craps are even procured is just to show "we have high tech rations", knowing that they will be rarely if ever used. If it ever comes a day when China decide to deploy its land force for combat missions beyond its border (hopefully this will never happen), and thus necessitating the use of these MREs I have no doubt someone will end up in a labor camp...

Would be great to know exactly what kind of bullets you dodge when you dont eat something. And what kind you are withstanding when you DO eat it.
