Podcasts have been taking over CZcams. Everyone from finance influencers to fitness influencers suddenly now has a podcast. This may be a bit confusing as the media has constantly been telling us that our attention spans have been shrinking, but podcasts are the exact opposite of short succinct content. One of the main reasons for the explosion of podcasts on CZcams is the departure of Joe Rogan from the platform. It turns out that audiences rarely leave platforms due to one creator. Rather, people tend to find new creators that fill the same void on the same platform. Aside from a massive demand for podcasts, creators have also fallen in love with podcasts due to their simplicity, networking opportunities, and monetizability. But, despite this, it’s not clear how much longer the platform can handle so many podcasts as there’s only so much time people can spend listening to podcasts. This video explains the monumental rise of podcasts and discusses the uncertain future of the podcasting industry.

People nowdays are lonely and listening to a podcast between 2 people or a group of friends makes us feel part of the conversation that is happening. Also not everyone want to watch TikTok nonstop. I put my headphones on the bus and sit on the front seat and watch the drive to work and home giving my eyes some rest from the phone screen. Also while coding or browsing, it can get boring so it's rarely a movie playing in the background and mostly music or podcast. Also we love podcast for the same reason people used to love radio / talkshows

I absolutely love long form podcasts, As generally speaking, The creators can really do the subject matter justice, and also demonstrate their own ability and knowledge in the subject matter, Or not as the case may be. I also subscribe to many podcasts on Google podcasts, and often listen to them in bed when I can't sleep. Topics such as biology, philosophy, cosmology, physics are all covered by some really amazing creators. Long live the podcast!

@@hasanalharaz7454 Sean Carroll's mindscape is probably my favorite, If you have a taste for slightly more scientifically orientated subjects. He has a broad range of guests, but he is a very smart guy and always asks great questions even in areas outside of his expertise. I also enjoy "philosophy in our time." Some of the guests are really wacky, but some of them are genuinely brilliant and thought provoking. These are normally done in panels of three or more guests in the form of a debate. Lex Fridman Also has a lot of interesting guests and he does very deep dives. My only caveat with him is that I question his authenticity. My latest discovery is a channel on youtube simply called Shaun, But be aware his politics are very left leaning, which works for me but I realize may not be everyone's cup of tea. The reason I like him is he applies strong intellectual rigor in all of his breakdowns, and really challenges a lot of very popular beliefs. I have a lot more but these are probably my favorites at the moment.

CZcams's algorithm relies on the "recommendation media" algorithm in which the platform generally will only recommend similar content to that which you've already seen so if you havn't watched a podcast on youtube before the algorithm should not suddenly start placing them on your home screen.

I really believe that all types of content will soon live within the same amount of popularity and viewer spread around them, since every single type of content fits for the kind of public it seeks I get to see more and more people trying and staying with the things they like.
Tv is great production value at scheduled neverending entertainment, shorts just as its name says is shorts for something quick like clips or snipets of information and laughs, longform videos and streaming being an internet experience of their own and audio books and podcasts will stay in the relatively same place, the one good thing about podcasting (that I would have liked to seementioned here) is that it has served to many as a replacement for social interaction since it can be a group of gamers talking about life, a duo of psychologists teaching something and even just one person narrating an event or responding questions.
Even in mexico, the president of the country gives speeches almost every morning as a routine to keep in contact with all matters, that is transmitted live by news reporters, those transmissions are also youtube live streams that will stay as a video, the audio of the speech gets turned into a spotify podcast, and most usually when anyone needs some information or citation they will turn into shorts and clips either for memes or for important information.
Its a cycle not of content but a way of communicating

The problem with the average CZcams podcast is that for every hour of talk, there's only 10 minutes worth of meaningful content, usually just showing a bunch of people and microphones, mostly talking about themselves or their sponsors. I think the effect of platform saturation on future growth of a particular podcast , will also come down to the nature of the podcast itself. What I mean is - if a podcast is focusing more on certain subjects/disciplines/concepts/etc (instead of interviews with actual people), and if the subjects covered have a very broad scope that is constantly evolving (e.g. physics, astronomy, computers, AI, futurism, etc), then there will probably be room for growth for quite a long while.

I tried podcasts to deafen the sound of existential dread but I've since switched to audio books because of the perceived smartness associated with it.
The downside is audio books are boring as hell. You'd think Audible would present good titles, maybe tailor it to you like Spotify, but no.
I've only found a handful of really good titles.
One criticism of your latest video: I see that you get praise for the new editing, and yes it looks cool and slick but maybe not animate everything, it can be stressful and doesn't necessarily add anything.
Keep the humor though because "on & on & on" was kinda funny seeing it written out like that, and in the previous video you had some "sample text" showing, not sure it that was intentional but I laughed a little. The humor also proves you're not AI content...for now.

One problem with podcasts is, because they tend to be really long, there are just not enough hours in a day to subscribe to more than say three or four podcasts at any given time. I would say I like the length to be no more than an hour, and if the subject requires more than an hour, then maybe divide it into a couple parts instead of trying to cram it all into one episode.

Over saturation has been the downfall of podcasts lately. There are too many podcasts about any given topic and too many episodes within each about it. A good chunk of them contribute nothing substantial to the topic but you can’t know in a few minutes you have to listen to most of the podcast. When you do that 3-4 times you’ve wasted several hours. And then every podcast is putting out an episode a day. This works for some but for a lot of interview/debate one this runs the creative well dry very quickly. I’ve been listening to them consistently for years until lately. So many are feeling very shallow.

The way "podcast" commentary channels deal with our shrinking attention spans is to literally just play Subway Surfers or Minecraft Parkour in the background. They always feel so low in effort. PNGtubers are a little better, as the video is actually related to the topic. The redeeming feature of PNGtubers is to put stock footage, images, and videos in the background. It's better, though, to just not have a video at all. If video is required to keep a viewer's attention, they can just watch TikTok instead. Best of all are the channels that use only stock footage and images and edit just quickly enough to keep our attention. (Oh and don't forget the captions. We don't all live in a soundproof house 😅)

Good point on the lifespan of the podcast, the fuel to the system does seem to be based round on how interesting these people are
I doubt we'll ever lose interest in other's people stories, there's always demand for that
The challenge is finding interesting people to do an interview with
I really love your channel, first came about you on the exposing skillshare video. I haven't missed a video since!
Your point of views are really interesting
Especially on how you find interesting topics to talk about, how do you come up with these ideas? - serious question, I want to get better at brainstorming ideas!
Keep up the good work! 😊

Intellectual people are now talking in terms of podcasts. Its easy for introverts. Can be listened alongside doing other work. Dont need much data consumption. I'm happy of being a dedicated podcast listener since 2015. Have several platforms from where I listen but never felt its time to move on from podcasts altogether. The categories I get in podcasts, I am yet to see in videos. I have stopped watching movies and shows and given my time to audiobooks and Ebooks and podcasts.

Podcasts in my opinion are having their golden age now, but will be "less popular" as the industry becomes more saturated, However if the trends of platforms ditching short form content and life becoming more rushed then i think Podcasts will have a probably permanent place in social media. In short: my opinion on this is that while Podcasts are/will have a golden age and an eventual slight decline, they will still hold a permanent place as a very popular outlet of content on social media.

Podcasts are slow burns, though. Sometimes you don't find a podcast until years later. That's why youtube is so brill. You can just search for podcast name, guest. You also touch on something important. Sometimes a person is interviewed multiple times. When you are downloading on an app, you can't tell which one you are listening to. Here, you can just read the comments and pretty much tell. Even the date is more clear. On the app, you have to search for the podcast title (have to get it exactly right, btw.) Then subscribe, then search back and back and back through the catalog. Sometimes only part of the catalog is listed (WTF - looking at you). Sometimes the host interviews the same guest multiple times or shrinks it to compile it with other best of clips. Whereas on youtube it is straightforward. I don't use CZcams because i like to pause and come back in between tasks. I watch a wide range of youtube. Sometime I have time for visual, other times I do not. And sadly, youtube doesn't make it easy to pick up on part watched vids weeks later, where podcast apps allow for that. Also, I do save part watched to a separate playlist. But it's just not as convenient.

Podcasts have taken the place that talk radio had in yesteryear. The difference is that the interviews are of higher quality and you can choose what to listen to.

  • @jqydon

I think you raise some good points but overall stick a bit to much to the assumption that all podcasts follow an interview format. Over saturation is of course still going to be a concern but podcasts don’t need to be hard coded with interviews and can be about the hosts or relevant topics similar to a radio show

Logically Answered, Thanks for the video and the subject on Podcast, Me personally I'll admit I have specific men and women I'll listen to on podcast, I like Graham, Iced Coffee Hour and few others but I am retired usually by myself sometimes my brothers or sisters come over but not that much so I enjoy long podcast the longer the better I like listening anyhow. Nothing to do on my part. Am I lonely, not really! I also like special subjects which cause me to click on podcast. Thanks for your work providing this video.

Low effort to create a podcast, well that is a understatement, there is a lot going on when creating a podcast is not like you sitdown and improvised everything. Sure the editing requires basic skills but it still requires a lot of work behind the scenes

Relatively low compared to an equivalent fully produced video, but as someone who’s typically spends hours per episode just doing the initial cleanup of his own audio, it’s definitely not light work.

There are way too many podcasts and due to their length they are unsustainable. The top will stay on top and the rest will eat each other up. I think we are at the peak now. Everyone's favourite person has a podcast now and they have surprisingly low numbers

IDK if the WAN show (LTT) would be consider a podcast or not. I think so. It is pretty old as well, I think back in 2012 it was first started. It is also live, which I don't think all podcasts broadcast live. If I got nothing better, the WAN show will consume a Friday night. Otherwise, I usually just watch most of the clips from the show later on. That would be the only podcast that I consistently watch.

It's appearing that the issue wasn't shrinking attention spans so much as a constant need for stimulation.
Those "mundane" tasks like walking and cooking used to be mental down time that was actually restorative and introspective.
Now that void gets filled with two hours of podcast that someone might do well to remember ten minutes of it.

i agree with everything you said in the video, specifically that part about how podcasting has hit its peak. about a mouth ago i spent about a mouth listening to Marc Maron’s podcast back catalogue and i must say i enjoyed it very much but i don’t find the need to keep listening to him unless it’s a guest i’m interested in. not only that i find Rogan to be repetitive with guest being mostly non credible. i get tired of Bill Burr and Tom Sugura. i still love their stand up but listening to their podcast every few days to be too much. so yea i totally agree with you that podcast has peaked
