    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive CZcams experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
    This time, as we test a 2005 Mini Cooper S (R53), we use an unrepresentative thumbnail, manage to keep a tight rein on our right foot, get excited about the ride and handling balance, examine the Tritec engine and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    On my way tomorrow to see the same model and year as this mini on your review, I’m really looking forward to seeing it! 80k miles so low mileage for the year, all black with black alloys black, included is the 2 small fog lights on the front grill. Thanks for your review your really helpful for my potential purchase 🎉😊

      One thing I would say is that this engine is actually chain driven, there is no cambelt (I got that wrong). They can have a lot of problems, so do check carefully!

    Splendid stuff, Sir! That is a lovely example and has lots of options also. The centre gauges in that car are known as the 'Chrono Pack' and was an option (I think included with Chili pack at that age). You have seen my 'pure' (i.e. poverty spec) car of the same year which has the regular central speedo and pod mounted single tacho. Mine also just has a shelf instead of a glove box, cloth seats, no front fog lights. Of all the cars on my fleet, this is the one I desire to drive the most - in fact it's going to Florence in Italy at the end of the month!

      Sir, I am happy that a true expert is around to ensure that I get information about these Minis as accurate as possible! I really don't know much about them at all... I am glad that yours has become a rather appealing companion!

    This I love, a Mini I'm familiar with.
    Jittery ride, but go-cart handling! I see quite a number of these about where I am located in the US.

      I think that it was quite a successful reintroduction to the American market at the time.

    As I remarked to the Salesman while test driving my Wife's 2010 MINI Cooper you don't have to convince me to buy a MINI, you have to convince my Wife because I would buy one in a heartbeat.
    Pure driving pleasure making every journey fun and exciting. Nothing comes close that looks so happy and cheerful. Smiley Car.
    I feel that the R56 MINI that replaced the R50 and R53 has a little more space and better quality, not that the quality was bad on the R50.
    A stroke of genius whether it was Rover's or BMW's idea to build it.
    Caught you smiling again Mr Lloyd. You really enjoyed the MINI Cooper S didn't know Sir.

      Sir, we are unable to discuss said R56 Minis for reasons that you well know.... As far as the R53 goes, these do have a few issues, and the maintenance on them is not necessarily easy, but if you have one like this, then can be rather enjoyable.

    10:49 when you say "the supercharger on the top", I guess you mean "the intercooler on the top". I recommend everyone who never have driven a 2005-2005 MINI Cooper S (R53) to try one. I have one regular and one with the JCW package. Love them!

    Great review of a great car in remarkable condition. I never understood, though, why reviewers always insist on cramming themselves into the back seats. The Porsche 911 has back seats which are understood to be basically for extra baggage, and as such you rarely see reviewers try to get into them. These cars are very affordable now (as used 911s were at one time), but the values are appreciating, the cost of parts are appreciating, and you're seeing more and more videos about Gen. 1 cars on CZcams. In ten years, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a decent Gen. 1 MINI for less than $30K. I've had the same 2005 MINI from new and will never part with it.

      I have a viewer with his own channel called "Matty's Cars". I believe I would have mentioned him in this video, but I can't recall now. He does an award ceremony each year at Christmas on the channel where he actually ranks the times I try to get into the back of awkward three door cars. I only really do it for him!

    The older Cooper S with the Supercharger is the one to buy , do not get the newer Turbo versions as they go wrong often sadly , My friend at work is always repairing his.

    My favourite Mini of all that I owned.
    Terrible fuel economy, hard ride. It tramlined all over the place. So naturally I used it as a motorway car and did 30000mi in 2 years.
    It’s hard to find one without the Chilli pack although I noted this one does not controls on the steering wheel which should be part of the Chill pack. But Mini did keep fiddling with it, taking bits on and off.
    The facelift ones I think are much better, not only did they up to power to 170hp they shortened the gearing (and increased the emissions). It transformed the car. The early ones were fast, but missing something.
    Unless the owner has changed them it should be on run flat tyres.
    The R56 that replaced it, was more fuel efficient, faster, more comfortable…. but no where near as much fun.
    The R53 encourages you to Rev to 6500rpm, and it sounds great.
    Values are going up, low mileage versions are now pushing £10k

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před rokem

      We cannot discuss the R56 on the channel, sir, but we can discuss the R53. I know someone who has an R53 without the Chilli Pack, but they probably are quite rare. Not sure what tyres it is on. I know one of these which was recently bought for £1350, which is dangerously close to No Budget Reviews money, so the standard R50 is definitely is available for under £1000. I have driven cars with a far worse ride than this. I actually thought it was quite compliant. This car is probably worth £4-5,000, I would imagine.

    Crazy condition for 130,000 miles! Awesome little car!

  • @scottishcarenthusiastsandtrain

    Had 2 isofix child seats in the back of my R56 mini and they do go in, bit tight if I remember getting through the door, but if your passenger wants a bit of leg room in front then it may prove difficult.
    Cannot believe the mileage on that Mini, it looks fantastic for its age.
    A most excellent review as always Sir.

    Is the 2019 Mini 2.0 Cooper S Exclusive a reliable engine?

  • @Pmjs
    @Pmjs Před rokem

    Im surprised the Supra has the same engine as the Mini Cooper S, I think it maybe a more up-to-date Mini.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před rokem

      The current Supra does not have this engine. There is a 2.0 available, but it is the engine from the current Mini Cooper S, not this one. The Supra I drove last year on the channel had a 3.0 six cylinder unit, however.
