    So great to see a 1.8 Marina for a change because I do love the rugged nature of the B Series. The Proton 1.3 GE with steel wheels and hub caps is glorious. While the Citroën GSA Spécial is pure nostalgia. I do hope that you get the opportunity to enjoy a GS or GSA Sir. I have a K12 Micra firmly on my list of potential classics to preserve.

    What a beautiful red Lanos. I remember at the time there was the Hyundai Accent, Kia Shuma and Mentor and Proton Satria I think but the little Daewoo was by far the best looking. My 1995 Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.4 had absolutely no steering column adjustment that came on this basic Lanos not to mention the Astra's lack of rev counter. However the base model buyer's little gifts to self were both present in the snazzy seat trim and tidy silver painted wheel trims. Would have been best to forget the cup cake holders though.

    A classic British missed opportunity I looked into the history of this princess-ambassador story a while ago. I can’t remember the number but cost Austin rover an absolute fortune to turn what looked like a hatchback but wasn’t a hatchback into something that actually was a hatchback…structural redesign required. Didn’t help that it looks identical to the earlier model so people didnt appreciate the re-design. A bit like original Vauxhall Astra saloon sold alongside the more popular hatchback…but that car was designed to be a hatchback from scratch, so taking a tin opener to the back didn’t pose the same problem. …that is what Austin rover should have done from day 1. In hindsight gearbox in sump was probably too limiting…..no 5th gear. Removing the 6cyl engine option also limited export potential. But all that aside, it looks like the car would make a very comfortable longer distance vehicle.

    They all had the silver paint missing on the drivers side of the grill, I think it was also the same on the GTI version but in green. My Dad bought one in October 1983 brand new silver 1.2, the dealer painted in the missing side when we pointed it out. He got it as was on 0% finance and a 5 speed box made it cheaper than the Nissan Cherry version.

    Sir, I recall many years ago (probably early 90s or late 80s) my mum’s sister had a white B plate Arna. Sadly I have no record of the reg no or I’d try to find out its fate. This at a time when it was just a generic second hand car/banger as opposed to the mega rare bird it is today. I greatly enjoyed your video and it looks like you enjoyed making it!

    Thank you for this. A fascinating watch. I would love to be transported back to a Nisan dealership circa 1983/4 to see how they pitched these cars against the 'pure' Cherry. I would be interested to see a comparison of warranty claims between Cherries and Cherry Europes. I think I know which one would have come out on top! My money would have gone on a Cherry, as personally I preferred the look of them (particularly at the back). On a family holiday in 1996 in Italy I excitedly photographed what I thought was a Nissan Cherry Europe but to my dismay it was an Arna. They were quite a common sight in Italy then. I used to walk past an immaculate light blue Cherry on my way to primary school from 1987-1994, which was your classic one elderly lady driver Cherry. I wonder if the Nissan dealership tried to push a Cherry Europe on her. Thanks again, and can't wait for the Ibiza review as I have a really person connection to that.

    Many of my friends parents owned the N12 Nissan Cherry around 1985/86. The N12 was known for its ease of driving and its completely realible if a bit underpowered Nissan 1200 engine. My experience of the Alfa Romeo ARNA and the Nissan Cherry Europe is that they were very fast indeed compared to the equivalent N12. The Nissan Body was a bit plain but the Japanese interior was very inviting as were all Japanese interiors of the 1980s. Our Local Parish Curate owned a white Alfa Romeo ARNA 5 door and he always seemed to catch up with other traffic and spent a lot of time in the overtaking lane.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting Před 6 hodinami

      It is exceptionally confusing. When this car was registered, Ford had the Escort and the Sierra in the family car class. Nissan had the B11 Sunny, the N12 Cherry, the Cherry Europe, the Stanza and the Bluebird in the family class, and I think some of them even still had Datsun badges!

    I had a 180hp model and had a problem with sudden a massive intermittent oil plume I eventually discovered that the original engine restricted oil supply to the cylinder head by the size of the hole in the block later engines the restriction was achieved by putting the restriction in the head gasket mine had the wrong head gasket so when cruising on prolonged motorway the cylinder head would fill oil and discharge the excess into the induction resulting into the plume of smoke relatively easily fix.i had bought my car security hand.

    Wow, what a rare and wonderful beast. I have particular affection for the Ambassador ‘Sprint’ nicknamed by my dad and I after he owned 2, and we realised they were anything but quick. I learnt to drive in a slightly later 2.0HL - and very nice it was too. Except the gear change, which was dreadful and also the too light power steering. Otherwise, roomy, comfortable, with the most amazing ride and (to my eyes at least) handsome. Sadly, the world had moved on by 1982/3 when these were launched, the the Cavalier mk2 was the much better, albeit not as cavernous bet. I have conversed with Mr Shuttleworth on the AR Online website about his love for the Ambassador.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting Před 13 hodinami

      We have something even rarer than this coming up on the channel soon, sir, but the Ambassadors really are not common at all, and it is only thanks to the dedication of enthusiasts like Michael that any of these survive at all. There is conflicting information out there about whether the 2.0 HL was also available with twin carbs, but this one is a single car, so a little bit less power than the Vanden Plas, for example. I have seen that article on the AR Online site...

    The Austin Ambassador should have been kept going longer and promoted properly. Five speed gearboxes were rare in cars at this time so most rivals would have only four ratios. The looks were good and the space is enormous. They should have given the Princess a hatchback and let the Maxi, SD1 and 18/22 Series sell alongside each other. Subsequently killing off whichever one, if any, that experienced falling sales. BL Management was always baffling. While BL Design Teams and Engineers were quite amazing in the Products that they turned out.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting Před 13 hodinami

      Yes, they really should have developed a five speed for these, although something like a Mark V Cortina was never available with one either. The practicality is superb with these cars, as is the visibility. The situation with internal politics at British Leyland which meant the Princess never got a hatchback was a bit silly, really.

    I love doing spot the Ford Consul. They are rare now..That orange car at the beginning of the clip has the wrong grill ... it is either a Granada GXL as badged up on the tailgate or a Consul with the wrong badge... The other thing that bugs me is the dashboard binnacle from 1976 onwards being inferior to the round dials they had ..the base model consuls had basic dashboard binnacles ....often the more basic mark 1 the Granada is the more curious I get..as these were once more common and a real reflection of what was on the road..same goes for all the base models of Fords from 1969 to 1977...... more than happy to see any Granada but thats just my preference
