    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive CZcams experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
    This time, as we test a 2001 MGF 1.8i Freestyle, we discover a bit of rust, a sightly broken door handle, collapsed Hydragas suspension, deal with appalling camera shake, talk about K-Series head gasket failure, enjoy the lack of power steering, have some fun in the New Forest and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    It was good to see you Mr Lloyd, I'm glad you enjoyed driving the car! When the summer comes I'll get my nice cars out the garage and let you have a go in those!
    For now though this car has proven itself a dependable companion on the road, hopefully as the wrather gets better I'll be able to tidy it up a bit!

      Why, thank you, sir! Glad you enjoyed the video. We look forward to some more tasty treats later in the year. Must remember to order that sump plug when Mr Coleman next services mine in June.
      The K-Series engines can be very dependable if you look after them properly, of course!

    I like this MG! It reminds me of a Porsche Boxster with a unique twist that MG/Rover could deliver.
    I think even those electric window switches were used on the Range Rover!
    Thank you for featuring this MG-F Joseph, and Happy New Year!

      Love the navy blue hood! Blue is one of my favourite colours!

      Yes, Range Rover P38A switches, not surprising as these cars were released in the same year! A bit like a Boxster, but much, much cheaper....

    Personally, I have a very big soft spot for all MGs. For example, the MG Metro of 1982 was more special than a Ford Fiesta XR2 or a Vauxhall Nova SR by virtue of having the MG badge.
    On the MGF the shape of the grille and bonnet borrow greatly from the Midget, MGB and the fabulous RV8.
    The seats look very supportive and the steering wheel is very like my Wife's 2010 MINI.

      Yes, I do hope to try another Hydragas suspended car at some point, we have already tried a couple of them, and the first one had Hydragas in perfect condition. I think a lot of people on this channel quite like MGs too!

    Wow it's like I'm drunk watching you drive 😆 .
    Looks a worse ride than Lyndons Metro!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety +1

      The ride was absolutely appalling. All down to the collapsed Hydragas. I don't recommend trying to live with the suspension in this state for most people, although Max is able to cope with it. The Metro Vanden Plas I drove was much, much better than this in terms of the ride.

    Another excellent review Sir, loved playing the spot the Rover Parts when I had my MGF.

    It's great that no budget review value cars like this still exist. I do love a concourse example but with prices how they are at the moment perfect examples are just out of reach for some of us. Cars like this one may allow someone to sample a mid engined roadster who otherwise wouldn't be able to.
    With regard to cars not being no budget review values, well my own car that you reviewed was purchased for under £500 but with how prices have risen may not still be in no budget review territory. I'm sure the sane can be said for many other cars in your back catalogue.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety +1

      You are correct, sir! The Honda Civic EG4 is a classic example of this, it was bought for under £1000 at the time, but you just can't buy an EG Civic with an MOT for that money any more. The TFs were both concours, but this proves that you don't need to pay that kind of money to get a car which will see you through the winter, which is why Max bought it.

    The heater on my old MGF worked almost too well it got really hot. If it's not putting out heat it could be an airlock. Also he got a steal at £400 I can't find a decent one under £1k anymore

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety

      Oh yes, the days of sub-£1000 MGFs with an MOT are numbered, I think. I am sure that Max will get round to it at some point. Thank you ever so much indeed for watching!

    I drive a Freelander, a diesel I'm afraid sir, so therefore I am in a position to confirm that the window switches, mirror adjuster and door release handles are the same.

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety +1

      Well sir, we will avoid talking about the forbidden fuel engine in your car, but we can at least confirm the similarity of all these parts!

  • @alanellis6688

    Love my Mgf vvc, just a shame it doesn’t get used, underneath the hood storage area there’s a hatch that can be unbolted to get access to the engine, power steering problems are common, mines disappears when I’m parking it (not handy!) can’t quite remember what goes wrong but you can get a better system off a tf

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety

      Ah yes, I thought that this wasn't the only one with power steering issues! I found out about that hatch underneath where the hood lives a bit too late to put it in the review, unfortunately... Lots of these seem to come out for shows, but not too many in daily use like this one. Thank you ever so much indeed for watching!

    A friends mgf has sunk in a similar way, it's on its bump stops, he thinks it's sporty, I think it's unsafe, when the membrane in the spheres go the gas leaks, pumping up only lasts a short time, I've just bought a low miles TF which although firmer than an F seems a better system, I had a mint f a few years ago (mint for 550!)on the motorway above 65 I had to stop and look round the car it was so unstable, I think it was lifting at the front, had a tf160 that I liked a lot, engine was awesome, tried the le500 shocks on it, but it rolled too much.

    • @Max-gz7ik
      @Max-gz7ik Před 2 lety +1

      Indeed, the hydragas system can be very problematic when the spheres fail.
      However the floatyness you described applies to all early Fs regardless of the state of the sphere. The front of the car creates lift at speed which is why they feel so odd. Hence why later Fs like this one have the front splitter and rear spoiler, something that was worked into the styling of the TF! It makes them feel completely stable at speed, I actually keep a couple of the splitters stored in the garage so if I buy an F without one I can immediately fit it to make the car usable on the motorway!

      @@Max-gz7ik OK bud, that's very interesting, thanks.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety

      I have driven two TFs, both in virtually concours condition (both linked below, I know you have seen the 2003 car), and they handled really well. This also seemed to handle well, and the steering feel was even better with no power steering, although the ride was predictably a bit rubbish... Max knows what he is doing, however, and so he will get it sorted.

    • @tomcole020
      @tomcole020 Před 2 lety

      @@Max-gz7ik Also apparently you can fit a Vented Bonnet with a vented slam panel and that completely fixes the problem as the air that created the lift can now escape through the vents. I've never tried it but it sounds like it can really improve the cars driveability

    Although I like the appearance of these MGs I think the inaccessibility of the engine is a serious negative for me.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety +1

      It's not too bad, actually, they have designed it so that you can drop it out fairly easily if necessary.

    • @Max-gz7ik
      @Max-gz7ik Před 2 lety +2

      There is actually a service hatch under the parcel shelf which gives you a lot of room to work. It makes working on the engine fairly easy!
      However as Mr Lloyd says some perfer to drop the engine out the bottom as it's relatively easy to do and gives you total access.
