    It's like Kyle is fighting against a majority of the panel, and whenever he seems to be nearing the falling side, Ana comes in and saves him. Not only did this panel not have any socialists, but it barely had any leftists smh

    • @Mutineer9
      @Mutineer9 Před 5 lety +9

      They did not have any socialists so no one gives the most important argument in favor of socialism. Kule himself does not consciously understand it, even he commented on it recently. Worker alienation. The fact there more and more jobs workers do which as socially useless or even harmful. I will give some examples: Walmart greeters, anyone who works in an advertisement. Banking right now. And even jobs that have some social meaning have a big part in them that is socially harmful. Shop assistant for example. All upselling is socially harmful, all specials are socially harmful. These jobs do not give people pride, connection to other humans, filling of fulfillment.
      Socialists advocation for worker-run companies, worker cooperatives. The biggest argument is to reconnect workers to there labor. Give them back pride, confidence, Fulfillment.
      Look on Kule. His job gives him pride, confidence. He is sure he does socially useful work. That why he is popular. But most workers do not have that. Can not have that in the current system. That is biggest argument for Socialism!

    • @DataNerdDalliance
      @DataNerdDalliance Před 5 lety +8

      I kind of agree. While I like the idea of him vs a conservative debate for both the entertainment value and the possibility that some viewers might actually hear points they haven't heard before, many right-wingers are good at deflecting and side stepping questions instead of actually answering them, so I'm not sure how fruitful it would be to the panelists themselves. At least here, we got a good debate on the merits of dem centrism (and hence a spotlight on why it doesn't work).

    • @DataNerdDalliance
      @DataNerdDalliance Před 5 lety +5

      Exactly. Reasonable people should be put country before party and he doesn't let anything slide just because it's 'his team'. And I like the way Kyle's take no prisoners approach frames the debate on his terms. It's refreshing to see someone basically say, "Yes, I care about healthcare and education for everybody and I'm not going to apologize for it." I like Obama, but on many issues he started with a compromise and walked backwards from there.

    • @thehumanity0
      @thehumanity0 Před 5 lety +4

      Nah, he's best when he's poking holes in the conservative cult-like mindset. Not many people can break through the whole Trump and GOP delusion thing they have going on on the right, but Kyle is able to because he twists the arguments to turn their own broken logic back on them. For instance, he does the same thing Ro Khanna does in that he says "I agree with campaign Trump" and argues for the policies that Trump PRETENDS to have a populist agenda around (but are in reality hallow) and backs conservatives into a corner where they're forced to argue against Trump's own positions during his 2016 election. Personally, I find this more entertaining to watch for the reaction alone.

    -Get corrupt money out.

    -Pretending those 3 things aren't a reality will lose you 1000 seats in government.

    The degree to which the audience was taking Kyle's side in this is predictable. I live in Mobile, AL and I can honestly say that people in red states that can turn blue with a populist message is not a lie. People absolutely hate Democrats here because they back down when it matters and then lie on things that do matter to us. The Medicaid expansion did not reach here. Our state politicians blocked it because exemptions to the expansion were in the legislation and Republicans that have a hard grip on their states took advantage of them. Under the ACA, if someone does not apply for Medicaid, which they often don't due to the lack of expansion, or they do not have private health insurance, they are given a tax penalty for not being able to afford health insurance at 200 a month premiums. This is a state where people do not make a lot of money (Forbes just named my city the worst city to live in) and most of the state are rural with a few exceptions being a Mobile, Birmingham and college towns. This did not make the ACA popular here in ways that socialized medicine, universal healthcare or even just Medicare for All would certainly achieve. Bakari Sellers does not know what he is talking about when claiming he is helping the Democratic Party make leeway in rural red states

      I am in Mobile as well and I can tell you from first hand experience through campaigning for Bernie down here that many republicans would vote for a populist message. We had republicans showing up to meetings during the election. Most people down here feel like all politicians are just corrupt and then just dissociate from the process. Republicans don't like republican politicians; that's why they gave the finger to them and voted for Trump. Many of them respected Bernie, but still had a hard time believing he was not just like the rest of the career politicians. If you can get past this mental barrier and get them to talk about policies and what matters to them personally, they are in alignment with a lot progressive policies. The key is being aggressive in calling out both sides for not representing the people, talking like a normal person, and hammering home that the only way a politician is going to represent them is if they are not taking PAC/corporate money. That as long as politicians are listening to lobbyists and money, they are not listening to us so it doesn't matter what differences we have in opinion. They thought they were getting this in Trump, but they were fooled by rhetoric.

      Darke Exelbirth i dismiss the very notion of a panel on whether racism is bad because that isn’t even a conversation worth having. Racism is obviously bad and anyone who disagrees with that isn’t worth our time or attention. The various forms and varying degrees of socialism is absolutely a conversation worth having and nearly EVERYONE agrees, as evidenced by the mixed economy we have and the constant discussions about healthcare, subsidies, social security, etc. But to have that conversation without actual socialists is laughable. Noam Chomsky might not have been the right choice for this format, but Seder could’ve brought along Jamie Peck or Michael Brooks for instance. Whether you agree with them or not, they absolutely would’ve provided more knowledge and insight and a different perspective that would’ve aided the discussion. This panel quickly got off track into the failures of the Democratic Party and I think that’s precisely because there weren’t real socialists present to help the panelists think beyond a two-party neoliberal system.

    • @SplotPublishing
      @SplotPublishing Před 5 lety

      Fight the Oppressor Michael was free to participate, and chose not to. And Ana, Kyle, and Sam all put out a public appeal for more socialists to participate. Funny thing, when offered an opportunity to come and explain themselves and convince the general public, Socialists seem to always opt out. IDK if it's because they are so arrogant they don't think they need the public in general, or if they are too scare or insecure in their abilities to convince. But they seem to run away from real discussion and debate outside their bubble, just like conservatives, anarchists, and most Libertarians. And you don't need socialists to think beyond a neo-liberal two-party system. Like, Socialists are the only ones not part of that paradigm? Think about what you're implying.

Popularity is easy when you're holding a torch and pitchfork. It's harder when you're actually in charge of getting shit done. What ideas did he originate? He's shouting other people's ideas as his slogans. That's fine, someone needs to do that, and he's good at it. But let's not confuse popularity with the rabble with the long term popularity of the ideas he expresses. They aren't his. Best thing he's done is helping to start that PAC, because they actually get something important done. He's not an idea man and not a particularly deep thinker. He's more the guy who sells the idea.

But there's terrible echo in that room and the point from which this was recorded doesn't help -- it's way on one side. It's also why there's no balancing, with the panelists being relatively quiet wheres the audience is incredibly loud. it's recorded from the audience. Probably nothing official. I'm still very thankful that we have this and camer angle aside the video quality itself is very nice.

    Kyle makes an excellent point about bringing the left to the center by allowing for socialist ideas to be discussed. The right wing has completely controlled this narrative as to where the middle is. Frankly, I call myself a democratic socialist in terms of allowing the people to control the means of production and government. Of course your shoes shouldn't be made by the government, but if workers had more control in their own workplaces would we have less sweat shops, would unions have more rights, would corporations be more accountable for their impact on global warming? Yes of course and I'm sure the social democrats like Kyle or Ana would in fact be in favor of it.

    • @Mutineer9
      @Mutineer9 Před 5 lety

That is the biggest argument for Socialism!
