Nigel Olsson is probably the most underrated drummer in music history, perhaps along side Ringo. Nigel's playing on Elton's best albums is literally the glue that binds the songs together. Listen carefully to the entirety of Captain Fantastic and tell me that Nigel is not pure genius. I've always considered Nigel's fills to be the perfect punctuation to the words and phrases created by Elton and Bernie.
Did you hear Nigel's intv, or did you pick up on that? 😉He said he plays to the piano low-end & the lyrics. Surprised me.
@@dsoule4902I found that very interesting myself.
Nigel...one of the most elegant drummers I've ever worked with!
Davey Johnstone Rocks!!! So humble and under-rated.
Wonderful interview, thanks! Davey Johnstone’s role as a talented M.Director shaped the sound of Elton John… so incredible… the sound of honky chateau… backup vocals on rocket man etc…
Gotta love Davey Johnstone....great musician, great guy.
This group is a cut above most groups. Loyalty, unity and pure love of the music. Love the insights.
Great to hear Davey talk about his involvement with Elton. I have fond memories of his contribution on the British folk scene.
I've loved Davey Johnstones's playing since I was 12 or 13. Huge influence on me and made me love guitar and music! Thanks Davey and God bless you. 🙏
I saw Davey Johnstone perform at the Elton John show at Madison Square Garden when John Lennon sat in. He was one of the most awesome players I ever heard.
Wow.
What a sweet guy Davey Johnstone is!
Davey is as cool as he is talented. I Love that he keeps Gus and Dee's memories alive. Well done.
The Elton John band have to get on the rock n roll hall of fame!!!!
Brilliant guitar player. A true musicians musician
Easily my favorite guitarist. Davey; I love the choices you make in songs.
Looking forward to hearing what you and your kids put together.
I didn't know about this guy until I went to an Elton John concert in 2019. Elton said that in his first tour of the USA in 1972 he asked his manager for a crack guitarist. The manager said "I know this mandolin player who might suit". In reality, Davey contributed to Bernie Taupin's solo album in 1971 and in August 1971 Davey played on Elton's Madman Across The Water album.
Regardless, Davey is the BEST guitarist I have ever seen.
It was as though the instrument was an extension of his body. The sound emanated from his fingers rather than a device. It was beautiful. Thanks Davey for adding to the quality quotient of my life.
I was in grade school when the Band became my one true obsession and Davey Dee and Nigel along with Elton .. too my the most amazing band .. Davey is a legend and you did a fabulous interview with him 10 of 10 !
What a lovely man Davey is, an inspiration to all young musicians out there
Fascinating to hear Davey Johnstone, the musical genius who would soon improvise the epic electric-guitar riffs that turbo-charged Elton John's rise to pop-rock superstardom, say that in 1971 he was a "folkie" originally hired to play banjo on Madman's "Holiday Inn" - what a seminal moment in music history _that_ was!
Thanks for this interview. Davey is fantastic. “Holiday Inn” is my favourite Elton song because of Davey’s sublime mandolin playing. I can’t explain how happy it makes me. And the Paul Buckmaster arrangement! Gus Dudgeon and the EJ Band deserve at least half the credit for making those records what they are. I was really disappointed not to see them even appear in Rocketman, but hopefully the documentary will make up for that!
I agree. Davey's acoustic contributions gave the band another layer. Top musician.
Well said, what docu ?
Just stumbled upon this interview with Davey Johnstone. Beautiful! Thank you. Thanks Davey!
Touring or not...the Elton John band, in its entirety or as solos, definitely some of the greatest musicians in history! Thanks and love to each of them!
This is excellent Tom and what a nice guy Davey is.
The man is a legend. A treasure to rock and roll
Such a great interview with such an underrated musician!
Wow!! Amazing interview!! Love and admire Davey so much. Thank you both for this...... felt like we were in the studio with you. 💖💖
I love the loyalty from Davey.
I really loved this interview. I am definitely looking forward to the documentary.
Love Davey…great musician and a wonderful guy. What a musical legacy!
Davey was one of my main inspirations for learning guitar. Loved that original band.
I saw them as a four piece with nigel, davey and dee at starlight theater in kansas city on Empty Garden tour, I believe when they first got back together. Growing up a fan of the OG I knew that night was special. How did Davey get that big sound out of that tiny Boogie amp--I tried for hours on my friends same model to match--no luck and all four harmonies the band performed were even better than Queen on their best night. Thank you Davey.
Amazing interview! Thanks so much! Insightful questions, and very generous and honest answers from Davey. Looking forward to the documentary.
I'm going to cry when Elton and the boys retire. Sad for farewell but happy ones for the fact they beat personal demons and survived to retire. They've earned it for God's sake. I wish Nigel could be there in person with them. They'll probably feel his presence anyways.
Thanks for this interview! I´ve enjoyed it a lot. Just looking forward that Documentary...Will be gold for EJ Die-hard Fans
A GREAT interview, whole thing, love it. Thank you!
Fantastic interview. About time someone so into the music is the interviewer !! Kudos to you Tom.
Love Davey so much. He is so talented and a expert in music. Enjoy his entertaining so much.
This man is a legend
Absolute gold dust Tom - thank you so much for this. Having seen Elton promote his book in Hammersmith last November he mentioned that when the tour (eventually) finishes he’d like to do short-term residencies at places like the Odeon etc. Just him - a bit like the gigs he was doing in the late 2000’s. As a pianist I can’t wait because in my opinion as Elton’s voice has inevitably deteriorated over the last few years his piano playing has gone off the scale - superb showmanship. The holy grail for me would be someone like you sitting down with him at a piano and have Elton deconstruct some of his songs for us musos. Questions like ‘When you see Bernie’s lyrics for the first time do you hear the vocal first or do you concentrate on a chord progression that suits the mood of the song?’ Or how about ‘ You use passing notes a lot when performing - can you show us how you work these into your composition process? Anyway, keep up the good work!
Awesome interview Tom ! Wow Thanks Davey ! All class !! Very smart, well-spoken and humble. Happy he is doing so well. Thanks for all that early Elton stuff !!
What a great guy. And great interview!
Props to Dee Murray, my "bass daddy". Well wishes to all
Can’t wait for Davey’s film on Dee!
thanks so much davey johnstone, u have made my life so much better
Fantastic interview. The Madman discussion was particularly interesting as Davey seems to overlook the exceptional strain that Elton refers to when making it. For Davey it was his first record and from his new and unique view he was happy apparently, but Elton has been quite clear that the sessions were rushed and a nightmare overall compared to recording the records that came before and after. I also would have loved to hear more about Dudgeon’s decision to leave out Nigel and Dee from the studio all the through Madman; which, according to Elton, was quite purposeful on Gus’ part. Davey was there to see them (finally) get invited into the studio for Honky; with Honky representing the paradigm shift in the way Elton recorded. What was Gus’ reluctance to use them? Was any tension fully relieved and sorted by the time they took up their instruments in France?
I read that was a rule from Dick James, not Gus.
Elton mentions Gus as the reason re the band a couple minutes past where I linked it-- when they get to Honky Chateau czcams.com/video/55fiH5vb6Ic/video.html

Great interview.
Though George Martin was responsible for the string arrangement of ‘Latitude’, it was Greg Penny who produced the ‘Made in England’ album.
Fantastic insightful interview! Thank you for posting.
Wonderful interview thanks!
This is an absolutely incredible interview thoroughly enjoyed!
Great interview Tom. I love Davey's words of wisdom and his humility.
Hope he gets the due recognition he has earned as a great guitarist! But then that don't bother him...Great rocking human.
I must say I am disappointed about the Rocket Man movie for not even mentioning about the band members. This is a tragic mistake.
I still haven’t seen Rocketman yet. But hearing that the band members aren’t mentioned made me stop beating myself up about not watching it yet. The band members are a big part of what I was hoping to learn more about with the movie as well as Elton and Bernie.
Tom, this is brilliant.
Better later than never,! Great interview.
Fantastic interview!!!!!!!!
as a guitar player amateur composer, I SO wish, that DJ would produce a work (book/vid, whatever), a "deconstruction" of them many truly UNIQUE sounds/tones that he produced on the various EJ albums...
Hello davey Johnstone
I would never go and see Rocket Man and I’m a fan from back in the mid 70s. To me, his crew like Dave’s, Dee, Nigel, etc. are an integral part of Elton’s success.
Nice one!!! Really good interview.
Incredible interview! Was so interesting hearing Davey talk about rocket man and the Jerry Lee Lewis story 😂 I've gotta watch the second interview now!
Wow Tom, wonderful interview. Your knowledge and research shone through, your interview style was Parkinson-eque with respect and consideration. Thank you.
Obrigado por acompanhar Elton John por estes anos todos 😉😉
Why is there no other information on the pillars of hercules documentary? Davey said a release of around Easter of 2021, now there is no mention of it anywhere. What's going on
FYI - George Martin did not produce the Made In England album. He only wrote one orchestral arrangement for the song “Latitude”. Greg Penny produced that album; which I believe is why it’s one of Elton’s best post ‘70s records.
Elton was wearing a Harley Davidson of Thailand vest. I gave him my autograph after getting his. A signed copy of my book
great interview
Definitely wanna go out with a bang, not a whimper. ❤
10 perfect albums in 6 years
I love this guy
Kiss The Bride was the 2nd single off TLFZ.
Cool shirt Davey!
I think that song was " I Wanna Kiss the Bride"....I think.....Love that one, too!
Incredible String Band! Yes, indeed. The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter.
elegant rocking hardcore tasteful player ...THEY DONT COME FINER
So, someone could follow the Killer !!
Did he ever played one of his own solo songs during a Elton John tour? I ve got your CHINA Lp.
Me too! It was a really good album!
He should never have been cast out. Big mistake Captain Fantastic!!
Where is the part about rehiring Nigel?
@36:30
Great interview - Davey, Dee and Nigel are 3 of the most underrated musicians in there respective positions in the history of rock music. Does anyone know what is happening with the documentary? I personally did not like Rocketman - in fact I have never in my life felt the disappointment of looking forward to a movie as much as this and it really was just awful for me....songs taken out of chronological order....levitation in the Troubadour.....just awful....to each his own.
they should publish the videos of live concerts from the past. many people have no idea that john band has existed at all. elton john is known from his music videos from MTV. people believe elton john was a solo singer who knew a few piano chords. Davey invites us to the current concerts. that's totally wrong. new elton john band and the new music is interesting only for his old fans.
That's Why they call it the Blues is OK, but it's far from being Elton's best song?
For those of us in a hurry, where does Johnstone discuss persuading Elton John to re-hire Nigel Olsson?
Start at 36:30
@@lesleydelugo9339Thank you!
He shouldn't have. Charlie Morgan is a better drummer. Hiring him gave Elton new hope to start touring again back in the mid 80s. The same can be said about Roger Pope.
So VERY DISAPPOINTED that drummer Roger Pope doesn't even get a mention.
So sorry Sue. Was not deliberate. Roger was a brilliant drummer and an integral part of so many recordings that we all cherish.
Simply a fantastic interview.
Saturday nights all right for fighting will always be the rockingest song I ever heard!
I saw the rocket Man movie one time and when I walked away the only thing in my mind was vanity project. I really didn't like the fact that Dee and Davey and Nigel and Ray had been left completely out.
All of life is a farewell tour!
