Davey is a very underrated guitar player. Davey, Dee, and Nigel. My favorite band ever.
And Ray Cooper !
I don't get it, every clip with this guy, people sing his praise (and rightly so) - how is he underrated? He has played with the biggest stars....
The most underrated backing band ever.
Underrated because his name doesn’t come up amongst the great 70’s guitarists very often. But he’s probably better than most of the usual suspects. Beyond his tasty guitar work, his other skills on the mandolin, uke, etc. are top-notch. And yeah, that was an amazing band. Why in the HELL Elton fired Dee and Nigel is beyond me. Could have only been the coke talking.
Davey is NOT underrated. He is highly rated as is the whole band
there are just nowhere near enough Davey Johnstone interviews available. He's just as interesting as Elton! He is a bona fide guitar genius.
ncf1 I agree. One of my all time favorites.
Awesome guitarist and criminally underrated!!
I met Davey once and he was incredibly nice and friendly. A gentleman and a professional.
So important to Elton John's sound. Davey gives many songs a rock music backbone. Elton John always had the knack at grabbing the best players available. Often the ones who a keepers for your whole career.
Davey has been in the Elton John band since 1972. He's a criminally underrated guitarist and love his work on alot of Elton's song's.
@@jaggass 1971
@@PlatinumBlack90038he played on the Madman Across the Water album in 1971 but as a session player; he didn’t join the band until 1972
That classic lineup of Elton, Davey, Dee and Nigel (plus Bernie, who was basically an equal in the group) was a powerhouse. There was an incredible chemistry between those musicians. Nice to see Davey stepping out of the shadows to tell his story.
Let's not forget Ray Cooper too. He added to a lot to their sound too.
Bernie was an equal? That's laughable and ridiculous. There are thousands of greeting card writers and books in Barnes and Nobles with writers as good or better than Bernie. Does Bernie play an instrument or have vocal ability? Nope. Only EJ fan wannabes like you would say such a thing.
@@groundhog713 And to round off the list, Gus Dudgeon mixing it all together
Adding Davey to the band is the best decision E. John ever made. Lovely chap, great guitarist, fine musician.
the elton john band of the early 70s were such a great combo , dee murray a very under-rated bass player .
Much respect for Davey ..very talented and down to earth guy.
Davey I was only 10 yrs old in "73" when I discovered Yellowbrick Road and as much as I was fascinated with Elton, I always had a thing for guitars and i knew your playing was great and distinctive and I remember reading at the bottom of they printed lyrics where you were playing banjo and other instrument.........love the way you play unto this day.....
He will likely never get the credit he deserves for creating the sound around Elton. He is certainly one of the most talented musicians in the last 50 years. He is an incredible guitarist but his real talent is fleshing out the song with the embellishments he add. Genius!
Davey is fantastic musician & person. If possible, be sure to see him on Elton Farewell tour....Terrific performance!
Absolutely! He is definitely the ‘X’ factor in making the Elton John Band sound through the years. It just wouldn’t be the same without him. Likewise, Cat Stevens had Alun Davies, Buck Owens had Don Rich, Tom Petty had Mike Campbell, Jim Croce had Maury Muehleisen and so on. Well, Elton can certainly be thankful he had Davey Johnstone!
Agreed. It is always , rather , about elton. IF this were a band, elton is the singer/ songwriter, Dave y Johnston the lead guitarist/ violins and others in the band the bassist, guitars, elton on piano and so on. Could hVe been inducted with elton in the Rock n roll hall of fame. Im just wishing
I love his guitar work on All The Young Girls Love Alice, Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding/ Saturday Night's/ Made In England etc.
Totally agree with this thread. He figured out how to play guitar for a piano centric artist. This is very different than playing for one of those classic bands where it’s all about the guitars.
“It was the best feeling in the world getting them a house.”
Beautiful Davey.
one of the great thrills of success!! to give back to the supportive family & to see how their offspring thrived in the home life they had brought up this child in sharing what was their bliss~
True! Davey is smart enough to have remained grounded. I'm sure his parents appreciated it more than he realized at the time.
Davey is a badd azz guitarist!
I like Davey now, moreso because his young son had died. I don't know where or when this sad news happened. But Davey is a sound guy, happy days to you!! xx
Incredible band I also highly rated the rod Stewart band of the 1970s
The tone and sounds Davey got from his guitar from the Elton studio sessions were simply amazing!!
I remember being at an Elton show in Toronto for GYBR tour in 74 , 2nd row and my eyes were closed enjoying a song, when I opened them Davey was looking right at me smiling. I was so in love with that band and that is such a simple gesture but have always thought that is a great musician knowing he reached us that way.
Davey Johnstone will never truly get the attention he deserves, largely because of the super talented dude on piano, and it's kind of sad. That said, Davey seems to have been really comfortable in the background. I get it. But it's good to hear from him now and again! Thank you for posting this gem!
He's a Scot!! That's how they are. Uncomplicated and comfortable within their own skin!!
What Chris said, and he didn't make it to EJ's 'director' team for no reason, Davey and family are well looked after now.. it's what DJ wants
Seems like a real down to earth guy. Cool
Lovely guy! Never heard him speak before now. Good one, Dom!
Him and Mick Ronson added magic to already great songs. Both schooled in violin
I can hear Hank Marvin in his cleanly articulated right hand. Both are extraordinary and extraordinarily underrated players
Such a nice and talented artist.
I'll never forget seeing Davey in a combat jacket playing with Noel Murphy in a pub in the Commercial Road, Barking (East London). Noel took a break and left Davey to play a banjo tune and we all had jaws on the floor - never saw anything like it.
I'm a very fan since i was 10, when i bought Capitan Fantastic album...
He made Elton and Bernie's song more beautiful than it was....thank vou, Davey!!
So, that's how Mr. Johnstone sounds! Happy 71st, Sir Elton!
Such a great guy.
Big, long time fan! Underrated guitarist!
Dave's is a Underrated Guitarist.
Love Davey! He just keeps shining!
Amazing Musician ,saw Davey play many times :) A great fellow Scotsman
Great interview with one my earliest musical heroes. Thanks so much!
Davey Johnstone is a brilliant guitarist. Great interview.
A great story and great advice from a great guy
Great story from a really nice guy, and ultimate professional guitarist. Should have 100,000,000 views. Davey is one of my sole reasons for ever picking up a guitar and learning rock and roll songs. I like to say he is one who if you had a 1,000 guitar players playing at the same time you could still pick him out of the crowd: especially his signature electric style. Thanks, Davey !
Thanks for sharing & your support!! Davey is a great musician, inspiration & guy!
Still can´t believe I saw this man on stage last year! I was so amazed I couldn´t stop staring at him!
we've seen him several times. so crazy talented
Shaun Dietrich You're lucky! I live in Brazil, and only been able to see him and Nigel once! I hope Elton plays in São Paulo soon!
Does the interviewer love saying absolutely?
Absolutely!
Great to hear from Davey Johnston all these years later. Glad he took care of himself.
I've read so many great musicians from the early days of rock were self taught. He's another one.
Absolutely! Dom & Davey are awesome! Thanks for watching!
The band definitely doesn't get the credit they deserve. They are so awesome live and there talent should be talked more about.
Davey Johnstone: a brilliant guitarist and a very canny musician. Every note he played with Elton counted for something, and enhanced the songs. A real inspiration.
What an excellent interview and superb interviewer.
Elton John for me.
Wonderful musician in my life.
Elton John bands.
Kisses at all.Thanks.
The most underrated guitarist on the planet as far as I’m concerned! He makes or breaks a song!
So grounded ,he has no idea he's a legend ..thanx for this interview
Drfeam job. Playing guitar in Elton's band for this many years. Great guitarist
Very excellent interview !
Since I first heard "Holiday Inn" back in 1971, Davey Johnstone has inspired me to play and has been a huge influence on my musical life ever since. Love this guy!
had the pleasure of meeting him backstage at the old spectrum in philadelphia in the early 90s. what a great guy and a blessed musician. rock on davey
I’ve admired his abilities as an excellent guitarist/musician for decades. Though he’s not a household name he’s always been the guy who really knows the importance of the old cliche about serving the song. I can’t think of another Rock/Pop player who has done it better. I’m glad to have finally gotten to see and enjoy an interview with him.
IF you are familiar with Elton John's music, you know Davey's name and his importance to EJ's sound
That was fantastic!
You have to truely admire Dave for his abilities and humility. What wonderful warm human being.
great interview Dom! Davey, Nigel, Dee and Elton were a powerhouse band. Glad Davey lowered the violin.
He was a beast with EJ.
great interview.
I have been the hugest fan of the EJ classic lineup since 1972. I feel like I’ve known Davey my whole life. RIP Dee Murray, another early genius in the band. Next I hope to hear Nigel!
I still can’t believe I seen Davey when he was Alice Coopers lead guitarist and band leader in the late 70’s. There isn’t anything this guy can’t play I think….👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Wow! A rarity: an interview that is exactly that - a two way conversation. Excellent and so enjoyable.
Glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to check out others on our channel & subscribe so you don't miss the new ones!
Terrific interview with a fantastic player and all-around great guy! Thank you!
What a talkative interviewer! I like an interviewer who asks a short question and then listens without interruptions
In Denmark last year was my first concert and i never thought i would be so close to him! i shook his hand 5 times
He created the guitar parts to all those songs, from the obvious, I'm still standing, to the 'more suble', Seen that movie too'. 'Composer' as well as techical player, and one hell of an band mate. (perfect)
What a genius. Thank you for this video.
Such an amazing musician always been one of my favorite guitarists
Great interview! Davey belongs to that rare group of top flight guitarists who were never just “guitar players”. Others that spring to mind are Mike Campbell and Nils Lofgren.
great interview seen him many times in the UK , so glad hes part of the dream team [ The Elton John Band }
I really enjoyed this Interview with Davey Johnstone, very Insightful, a really fantastic player, his acoustic playing is also superb, I also love the work he did with Magna Carta.
This gentleman is directly responsible for my life and career.
Retired Audio Engineer, nominations awards, whenever I saw a concert, always glued to he and Nigel.
“Hotel California “ is very good,……but,,, YBR is Stratosphere.
Elton knows how to em doesnt he.I admire the entire band alot. What a turbo music machine they are.Saw them live real…no gimmics nothing but a solid eloquent WALL of fabulous artistic music.
I love those guys
Ricky
A very plaisent guy.A fabulous guitarplayer. 😊😊😊😊😊
Amazing interview!!!!
Madman, Tiny Dancer and Levon, these three gems in one day? After that you are not afraid of anything!
Best backdrop I've seen in a long time. Visually.
Thank you! Appreciate you watching & sharing with us!
I stared at this guy for years as a kid on the albums. Don’t know why. He looked cool. He looked strange. He frickin rocked. This is the first time I’ve heard him speak. Huge part of my young music life.. this is the first time that I’ve thought about that. Very underrated. This would be a great time to say thanks for this interview Aloha
Glad you enjoyed it Michael! Davey's a great musician & guy!
I idolised Elton John in my teenage years and Davy was my first introduction the instrument I later came to love I remember riding my bike in London one day and on Kensington church St I slowed down for this car pulling out and I recognised Davy in the back seat I sat up pointed at him he looked and I just pretended I was strumming a guitar at him me smiled and I gave him the thumbs up i probably made his day and he totally deserved it, years before I met Chris Simpson at a folk club and chatted about Davy I ve always loved his playing and hearing his acoustic work on Madman is still haunting especially the mandolin outro on Holiday Inn brilliant player !!
"Rock of the Westies" is a stellar LP that showcases the talent of Davey.
I love the mention of teenagers and how the focus is to be inspiring and encouraging. Great channel!!
Beautiful.
For an Elton John fan and a music aficionado, listening to Davey is incredibly interesting.
Thank you for posting this interview!
What a great interview !!
thanks Dom, another great interview
The Whole Band Is Truly Great , Davey Is My Favorite He Makes That Guitar Come Alive , Thanks To The Whole Band For Blessing Us With Such Great Music .
A genius. One of the greatest players in music.
He's a very inspiring man on many levels!
Used to live in the same apartment building as Davey. Nice man.
Legend..
Brilliant!
Always loved his work. Nice to see a good interview.
I was in junior high when I discovered Elton John, it was the beginning of a fantastic journey of listening to his music
Another great interview and look into a musician's life and opportunity to learn the path to success is diverse and self driven.
Thank you Dom, you ask the right questions and your admiration shows when conducting these interviews.
I just watched the AIC MoPOP induction video. Davey sent a message. I saw Elton in 2018 and it was unreal. I love this guy. He's a genuine person and he loves music. The interviewer was also great. Thank you, guys
Davey you are H.O.F. Too. Brother. Great skills
Hard as worker.
Great interview. These gentlemen salute to you. I love Davey's story. Never knew before he's Scottish.
He is definitely an underrated guitarist... a hidden gem in a sea of stars! Play on sir.
Got the privilege to see him play last night at Elton johns farewell tour. Blown away! Amazing guitarist and has made me want to pick up my guitar again. Icon. 🎸
Yes davey johnsone is a music legend incredible musician. Fabulous
I can't believe there are not more subscribers to this channel this is excellent
Appreciate your support & sharing our channel Scottie!
Met Davey a few times in our home city Edinburgh back in the late 60s. A great natural guitarist and a great guy. He, the band and Elton, were absolutely superb at Elton’s highlight performance at Glastonbury in June 2023.
Be really interested to know what Davey will work on now that Elton is finally retiring. I’m sure he’ll be outstanding at whatever he chooses.
Oh, and I’m sure he’s still a great Hibs supporter back in old Edinburgh !! 🙋♂️👏👏👏👏🎼🏴
Just found this great interview! Always admired Davey Johnstone's talent and showmanship on stage. What a great talent and what a great and nurturing Dad he must be for his kids. Thank You!
Thanks for this, one of my first guitar heroes.
One of the greats , such a wonderful guitarist
I've seen several conversations on social media asking about underrated guitarists. I ALWAYS answer that question with DAVEY JOHNSTONE! HE IS A PHENOMENAL TALENT who has been overlooked and overshadowed by guys like EVH and others. I have LOVED Davey's work for years!!! He is amazing!!
Don't let amazing players intimidate you. Take those moments to realize simply that it can be done. Then starts the journey of how.
Adding on: I just recently found this channel. It's an amazing thing you're doing. I'll do my part in sharing, because much of this art will be lost if we don't. Thank you for what you do.
You are welcome and thank you for your support & sharing!! That's exactly what we are doing at www.thesessions.org and with the Artist Series, sharing the artists info, tips and experiences to future generations of Artists!!
