Game of Thrones Reading Vlog ⚔️ Annotating & Reacting When I DNFed the Show

- I am doing a reading vlog for A Game of Thrones which is book 1 in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin. I am annotating in this video and reacting to the book when I DNFed the show - mostly because the animal scenes were too much for me. I thought reading A Game of Thrones might be easier because I can tone down the violence or skim past it, and good news I was able to get through the whole book when I couldn’t finish the show!
For my annotations I am looking at: New characters, character death, quotes/moments I like and themes.

Awesome breakdown of one of my all-time favorite books JAK! I feel like I’ve done a poor job setting your expectations - sorry about that.
Tyrion is my favorite character in fiction, so I’m happy to see you’re enjoying his chapters.
A Song of Ice and Fire is epic fantasy with minimal magic. It exists in the world and we see elements of it throughout the series, but it is never going to be a magic system like you would see in a Sanderson novel - that just isn’t what George is trying to do with the series. Although it is based heavily on medieval history and in particular The War of the Roses, it is an entirely fictional world (thus the fantasy classification.)
Looking forward to your thoughts on A Clash of Kings!
It is not your fault! Goodreads labels it as Fantasy, Fiction, Epic Fantasy, Adult, High Fantasy, Sci Fi Fantasy - so it is the fault of SOCIETY! Lol 😂
Tyrion is great, I’m looking forward to more of his story
@@JAKandtheBookStackThe series go certainly fits those categories, but it’s more in tue meta physics and rare characters.
Great video, Jak! I think Scot addressed what I would’ve about the magic. You noticed there was also a lot of lore introduced with the stories about the Children of the Forest, so there’s a lot that the Westeros people are not aware of or are not acknowledging. Plus, Dany’s dragon eggs are seen as just fossils or rocks until they learn better. Everyone is “blinded” -speaking of the theme you mentioned-by the the game of thrones rather than the real threat growing beyond the wall. Can’t wait to discuss this more with you in the live show!
Oooh you just 🤯 with your comment of the people being blinded to the danger beyond the wall! I can’t wait to discuss it too - but I cannot believe I forgot to put the schedule in the video after I asked you for it - silly me 🤦♀️
I loved how you broke this down! I definitely don’t think this is the book for me but I love how you described everything
I read it so you don’t have to 😆 thank you, I am glad the breakdown was enjoyable and it was really fun to be analytical on this one
LOVE your journey! Absolutely everything that I was looking for for my rereading journey. I did not see any other videos for annotating AGOT so thank you SOOO much! New subscriber here!
Thank you so much, you’re so kind- I’m so happy we connected!!
So fun seeing your journey. Whoever didn't warn you that there is VERY little magic in AGOT did you dirty. There is more magic in book 2 but it we are never full in on the fantasy per se. Yaaaas Danaerys....and al the poor horses.
It was Goodreads that did me dirty! Genres there are like fantasy, epic fantasy, adult fantasy, etc. so rude. Poor ponies 🐴 😢
@@JAKandtheBookStack it does get some magic later on but it is a very low magic world and is usually the low side when I ask how much magic someone has in their book from game of thrones to dungeons and dragons…🤣
Great video! I enjoyed your first time read of this! If you read more, prepare for more fantasy elements!!
That is great to help me set my expectations, thank you! I think I will continue to book 2 and decide from there!
@@JAKandtheBookStack I’m basing this on the tv show, as I didn’t get past the first book!!
@@whatruthreads Oh I see - I think I am too weak for the show... I can read violence but seeing it is a different story.
Great video! It’s fantasy but set in a world where magic isn’t thriving. Ex: dragons being gone for many years. But you still get prophecies, gods, types of witchcraft etc. It just isn’t as in your face or explained like other fantasy stories. But I understand you feeling like it’s not fantasy/ more historical. I’m looking forward to your journey because I feel Martin had created a wonderful world and plays the long game with some of the story lines.
I’m excited for that long game too. Especially now that we have a foundation from book 1 I bet it really takes off
I enjoyed listening to your thoughts about Game of Thrones. Did you continue on with the series, and did you make any further videos about the additional books? If so, I know that I would enjoy watching those videos. But I did not see them on your channel. So I don’t know if they are available and where I could possibly find them.
Thank you!! I thought I did have a vlog reading sequels where I read book 2, but I can't find it! I am hoping to continue in the series with book 3, but I am not sure when. Have you read the series yet?
@@JAKandtheBookStack Yes. After the first season of Game of Thrones I went straight to the book series. I then became one of those annoying people who was always telling fans of the television series that the books are so much better.😄I have also read everything else that Martin has written within the ASOIAF universe, which includes the Targaryen history book Fire and Blood. This being the basis for the current HBO series The House of Dragon. And the short stories commonly known in the fandom as the Dunk and Egg stories. These are currently being made into another upcoming television show. And these stories actually have a somewhat light hearted tone for this universe. I expect the show will be well received. I think some of the other comments people made on your video have addressed the fact that the magical element continues to grow over the course of the series. If Martin is ever able to finish the final two books of the series, I expect they will be quite fantastical. I think that this story is heading to a magical climactic showdown. Martin has said that there is a reason that the seasons are out of whack in this world. And it is seemingly tied to the fact that the cycles of life and death have been interfered with in someway that needs to be corrected before the end. I have followed a few Podcasters, who have delved deeply into these stories, discussing the world building, the themes, the symbolism, etc., in quite a lot of detail. But for the most part these days, it is first time reactors to the television series that are dominating online discussions of this story. So I find it refreshing whenever somebody is reading the books for the first time and giving their thoughts and opinions on the series. I really think there is far too little of that available. I would definitely watch any additional videos you post regarding this series.
@@blackeyedlily wow that is amazing! I have to say your enthusiasm is infectious and I want to pick up book 3 right now!!
@blackeyedlily I found the reading vlog from book 2! It isn't the same format as this, but I saw it and thought of this conversation czcams.com/video/E9YyItTVoZE/video.html
Good review/reaction. Did you continue the series?
Thank you! I read book 2, and I’m planning on reading book 3, likely in 2024
@@JAKandtheBookStack are you going to make a reading vlog?🙈🙈🙈
@@luisluis193 I can! I actually just ordered beautiful hardcover editions
@@JAKandtheBookStack 😃😃😃😃 yeyy
Just Thinking 🤔about you and check my notification, and Suddenly Miracle happen I get your new video.
You’re so kind my friend! Hopefully this has a little more “lifestyle” type stuff?? More vlog style here than just a book review
Storm of Swords is excellent
I need to keep going then!!
“It’s too violent for me-i guess it’s better reading it”
Girl…
lol it works! My imagination tones it down.
With all the money he's made off of his readers "Georgie" has nothing to complain about so call him "Georgie" all you want 😄😸
Haha solid point!
