Oh a pure genius and great guitarist too!!
Roy Harper should be a national treasure, hats off for recognising genius.
This was beautiful and lyrically intriguing. I’ve never heard it before. I started watching your channel recently and at first just watched you react to songs I already knew, but now I’m enjoying discovering new music with you and your subs. Your takes are very intelligent, thoughtful, and respectful of the artists and their work. May I recommend another singer-songwriter? Townes van Zandt was a great, poetic American songwriter, among my favourites of his are Lungs, Highway Kind, To Live’s to Fly, and the evocative Our Mother the Mountain.
Good suggestion!
He also wrote Poncho and Lefty, or as he put it "a medley of my hit "
I can certainly appreciate this track. It does have those amazing layers. And the camera is nice:)
Roy Harper wasn't on my radar when he was first producing this wonderful music. Thank you, Daniel, for giving me a reason to hear this.
Brilliant. Been a very fortunate Rh fan for many years!
Hi Daniel, this is some coincidence ...I have been listening to the track "Me and My Woman" by Roy only a few hours ago....It's an incredible track. Loving this, thankyou !
I love Roy Harper seen him live a few times, hes brilliant live.
Seen him five times. Way back in '82 with a full band, twice with his son Nick, and two times solo. Copious amounts of dope was involved! 😜
@@Katehowe3010 yeah all mine were back in the 80's, good times man.
roy is superb been a fan for 30years worth digging deeper underated
guitarist (also sang have a cigar for pink floyd) love it maybe try no woman is safe or once ,seen him a few times never dissapoints 🏴👌
Roy Harper is a legend. You should react to Miles Remains Live 2004
Talk Talk and now Roy Harper. Are you reading my mind Daniel? 👍
Hehe. The 'other stuff going on in the background' at the end of the song is the fade into the next song, 'the same old rock', which you reacted to a few months ago.
This was Beautiful, just Beautiful! ❤️ A quiet tone musically well composed and vocals. I was holding back my tears. There is no way this is the same Roy Harper who performed lead vocals on Have A Cigar. NO WAY! 😃 WOW!
Stunning stunning album
am glad you found roy
Also, Roy considers himself a poet first and foremost. And esoteric is the perfect way to describe many of his lyrics. He was inspired by the romantic poets, and I think he's cited Endymion by John Keats as one of his favorite poems. His lyrics often reference a lot of different aspects of English culture that may not necessarily be apparent to casual listeners. Which was a huge rarity at the time. It's not often you hear someone singing about the game of cricket, such as in "When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease." But at the same time Roy has been known to be very blunt at times. He's definitely not afraid of letting his listeners know in stark, sometimes crass terms how he feels. He's not without his sense of humor, which comes through in this song. Swollen thighs, and tired critics "playing with their parts."
Really good to hear a reaction to this Wonderful poet/musician!
Saw him live many times over the years!
A revolutionary social commentator and Amazing vocalist/guitarist!!!....
Roy Harper has always been my favourite..... with country joe mcdonald next
What an intriguing selection! Thanks for featuring and analyzing this one. 👍
Wow that was great.
He has a good voice.
Ian Anderson was heavily influenced by Roy Harper, and a lot of Jethro Tull's acoustic music is very much inspired by Roy. Ian grew up listening to Roy's music, and he's cited Roy's second album "Come Out Fighting Ghenghis Smith" as one of his favorite albums of all time. They both grew up in Blackpool and Ian was sort of inspired by Roy, as he says Roy managed to "escape" Blackpool and make a record. Ian has also played flute on a few of Roy's albums. I'd say the Jethro Tull song Wondering Aloud is their most Roy Harper influenced song. If you want to hear Ian play some flute on a Roy song, "These Fifty Years" is a long song where Roy tackles some of his...contentious feelings about religion, as his stepmother was a Jehovah's Witness who didn't treat him too well. A lot of his feelings about religion come from that poor relationship with his stepmother. I know you're fairly religious, so it might be interesting to see you react to Roy's take on religion in some of his songs.
My favorite and punk rock thing about this record. His label wanted him to make short songs so they could be played on the radio. He came back with a 4 song album where no song is under 9 minutes.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band As Above So Below czcams.com/video/d5wbYnqWc90/video.html
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Nightingales & Bombers - As Above So Below (1975)
"The title of this album was inspired by a recording made in Surrey, England during the Second World War, by an ornithologist intending to record Nightingales. The bombers flew over at the same time and were recorded by accident. The recording has been incorporated in 'As Above, So Below'". - Manfred Mann 1975[3] (In fact, the recording was made on May 1942 by a BBC sound engineer for the BBC. Intending to capture the nightingale's song he also, by accident, recorded the sound of RAF bombers on their way to attack Mannheim, Germany.)
I am sure I am too late by now for my views to be read by yourself regarding Roy Harper, but believe me when I went to watch him in the early 1970's at Leeds University and was literally mesmerised by this man and his music and then my friend and I learning to play "ME AND MY WOMAN" from the same album so that we could play and sing this iconic piece of music anywhere where we could find an echo.
If you do by any chance read this message, please listen to this track and be amazed
Did you know that Roy Harper and Jimmy Page made an album together in the eighties? They were good friends…Check it out.
Definitely starts with a
" Wondering Aloud " feel.( or vs-vs ) Hats off to Roy Harper indeed! Beautiful legend 💜
Thank you Daniel
Ian Anderson was heavily inspired by Roy Harper's music. Ian cites his second album "Come Out Fighting Ghenghis Smith" as one of his favorite albums of all time. Especially in the 70's, Ian's acoustic heavy songs are definitely influenced by Roy.
@@ReeceTatarka absolutely, as were many bands including of course Led Zepplin. Though few were as obvious as I.A.s tip of hat with Wondering Aloud. Well, he was an incredibly gifted and inspirational musician, those bands were the better for it.
Wondering Aloud though came out a couple of months earlier than this song, so it must have been inspired by some of Harper’s previous material.
@@mishansk2 I'm honestly not sure but see Roy Harper's song was recorded in Dec.1970. Tull's first recording is listed as Feb. 1971.
The only non member of Pink Floyd to sing lead on Have a Cigar
Glad to see you return to this album by Roy Harper...but you've missed the AMAZING stand out track-Me And My Woman. It's essential listening, whether or not you do a reaction video. Treat yourself to some pure musical magic!
You really have to give Tom Tiddlers Ground and Another Day a listen sometime; both beautiful in their own unique way. Enjoying the reactions and analysis overall here, thanks.
You should check McGoohan's Blues by Roy).
Roy Harper has a great catalogue of work. A musician admired by a lot of contemporary musos like Jimmy Page...he was renowned for being a bit cantankerous! Lifemask is a great album... try When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease...a song about it being time to pass...
Check out you tuber ' Bad Speech' Roy Harper covers and tutorials....x.
Music critics - especially in a time when music was harder to hear and much more difficult to get hold of - should speak from a position of wider experience and expertise in the field.
Today, when everyone can hear everything with the click of a button, and when nearly everyone has their own social media channel on which to spout their opinion (!) the art of the critic is much diminished.
But one thing remains the same: it's just an opinion.
Not many people know Roys work despite his brilliance. Hopefully you can help to spread the word a little. This is possibly the weakest track on the album which only serves to speak for the quality of the rest. He should have been as big as Dylan. Thank goodness his body of work remains which is extensive, phenomenal and a permanent tribute to a man who’s mind is full of thoughtful lyrics and beautiful guitar music.
Please hang in there Daniel and complete the album, you will not regret it personally even if they probably wont be the most successful videos you produce.
You know a good reaction channel when you go from mid period Talk Talk to prime Roy Harper in the space of two days! Keep up the good work mate, because both acts deserve more than they ever received. ✌
Strange spelling of Dylan!
@@Katehowe3010 the joys of predictive, thanks for pointing it out!
@@scifimonkey3 You're welcome. Any fan of Roy Harper is fine with me! 😉
