A near perfect punk album. I am 58, and this album still makes me want to get up and jump around. A great live band too. A great reaction, thank you for the upload. You must listen to the greatest, Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks, Hereâs The Sex Pistols album.
I love Machine Gun Etiquette as well, fantastic album.
I love The Damned so much, they're one of my favorite punk bands for sure. Two other punk albums you really need in your life are The Clash - The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material, also both debut albums and both fantastic.
Damned's Machine Gun Etiquette is a must, and Crossing the Red Sea by the Adverts. And Buzzcocks!
The final track is a Stooges cover - "1970" from the legendary album "Funhouse"
Going to see the Damned live for the first time in 6 weeks, can't wait.
The Damned are still at it, releasing killer albums and touring them in the 21st century...
Definitely listen to the Clash, the Stranglers and the Ramones.

The great thing about The Damned is that their albums are so varied in style. Their 3rd, 4th, and 5th albums (Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album, and Strawberries)show their true diversity, and are definitely worth a listen.
You should try Phantasmagoria from 1985, so different but brillant, too
I remember trying to practice drums to this when I was 17; nearly gave myself a heart attack. :)
This album is so chaotically amazing (produced as rawly as possible by Nick Lowe).
The Damned did a lot of firsts- the first UK punk band to release a single, to release an album, to tour the US (there's a lot of conjecture as to how The Damned essentially kick-started the West Coast punk scene, and why the LA punk scene was much more energetic than New York, which already had their established scene at the time), as well as the first of the early UK punk bands to break up- and reform.

@@mattjohn4731 Yes, you are correct: the first UK punk single. NYC's The Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop" was released in February 1976, while The Damned's "New Rose" was released October 1976.

Australia has always had top-level rock, hard rock, punk rock, etc, forever [well, at least as far back as Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs]. I'm from the US, but a huge fan of Aussie rock.

The Beatles Please Please Me just hit 60 years old.
It was the simple sound that the first punks were trying to get back to.
Recorded in one day, that's punk right there.

Brilliant! Loved your enthusiasm for one of my favourite albums indeed favourite bands of all time. 2nd album was a continuation but didn't quite hit the heights of this one and the band split soon after. They soon reformed without guitarist Brian James with bassist Captain Sensible moving to guitar and released a third album Machine Gun Etiquette which is rightly regarded as one of the greatest punk albums of all time, they were always on the fringes of the music industry but had a few months in the mid to late eighties when they had a number one hit and a few high in the charts. Captain Sensible even had a couple of big solo hits too. The current line up are still releasing great music and the original line up toured this debut album just a couple of months ago. I've seen a few recommendations on here for the 3rd album all I can say is just do it! I saw how you reacted to an x Ray spex track, can't wait for you to do the album, keep digging the music!

Check out 'The Saints' -an Australian PunK band from Brisbane that formed in 1974 - I love em by 1980 they changed in style -also Radio Birdman another punky rock n roll band from Sydney
Simply put, one of the greatest punk albums of all time and released very close the the Damned's 1st is Pink Flag by the band Wire. Wire are a british band and Pink Flag is considered one of the top 5 foundational punk albums. Lots of tracks and many of them are quite short, but the album is a very enjoyable listen.

If you LOVE British Post-Punk you have GOT to check out South London's Shame! They just put out their third album in Feb (on my birthday of all days!) and they are genuinely one of the best bands from the UK rn.

The album was done on a budget. It's amazing there was any production at all. They are more than just a punk band though. You should listen to Machine gun Etiquette though.

Love her reaction to new rose, I had the same reaction when I first heard it 46 years ago as a 15 year old kid, still one of my favourite records of all time. Gives me goose bumps. This was their first album and it blew me away. The Damned are still touring and I saw them 5 years ago.

Kira, all those albums on your short-list are essential so you can't go wrong with any of them.....also add in Singles Going Steady by Buzzcocks and Once Upon A Time by Siouxsie and the Banshees
Yeah... I'm not sure how the Buzzcocks have been so overlooked here, but that needs to be rectified. Singles is an ESSENTIAL punk record.

One Friday afternoon in late May, 1977, a nervous 18 year old schoolboy - still in his school uniform and with greasy, unruly hair that drooped over an acne-pocked forehead - waited in line outside The Corn Exchange in Cambridge, U.K., to see The Damned. I felt a bit like a fish out of water amongst the more obvious punk rock fans with their leather jackets, studded belts and wristbands, dog collars and lurid spiky haircuts, a few of whom regarded me with mild hostility and surly contempt. However, despite not yet fitting the stereotypical image I had already been listening to punk avidly since the latter half of 1976, and was studiously building up a small but vital record collection, which did indeed include 'Damned Damned Damned'... By the time I entered the cavernous, echoing hangar that was the venue the support band, The Adverts, had already ploughed into their opening song, and so really they were THE first ever Brit-Punk band I experienced live (and they were really, really good...). Speaking of first times, this gig on May 27th, '77, was the very first EVER Punk/New Wave concert to be held in a large venue in Cambridge, and it was a doozy! The audience was relatively small, and a mix of punks, greasers and assorted weirdos, amongst whose ranks I guess I fitted in just fine. I remember seeing two young girls in fancy-dress, one as a soldier in uniform, complete with plastic machine-gun, whilst her friend was a fairy, resplendent with gauze wings (which didn't last long once The Damned hit the stage and the pogoing and moshing began!)... A few years later I recognised them as Debsey and Hester from local ingénues The Dolly Mixture, who are still one of my fave all-grrrl bands from that era. Back to The Damned. They were of course mind-blowing for all who were lucky to see them in their prime and with THE definitive line-up. I consider myself blessed to have been there. There was no going back, by the end of the summer of '77 my hair had been first Elvis-quiffed, and then cut shorter and spiked, and with no more school to attend I could dress more suitably for the Punk scene. The bands I saw from then on over the course of a decade are a litany of Punk and New Wave greats and enthusiastic 'could've-beens'... One day I should write my memoirs, lol.
Loved this reaction vid, Kira, I could tell the music hit you exactly as it impacted on that callow Cambridgeshire schoolkid way, way back in 1977. Incidentally, you should check out The Adverts' first LP 'Crossing The Red Sea', it too is highly regarded as a Punk classic. Seeing them support The Damned... wow!!! That truly was a double-bill to die for! As the late John Lennon once exclaimed, "You should've been there!"

Freakin awesome hope you Dig these guys ...the DamneD are my all time favorite Punk Band ... The Sex Pistols may have been the poster boys of punk but the DamneD where the first release a single the first to release full album and the first Punk band to play in the US.

An absolute classic! You've got to add Crass and The Exploited to your list as well. A couple of my personal UK favourites there. For some contemporary punk I have to ask if you've heard of "Amyl and the Sniffers"? They're an Aussie band and I really think you'd dig them.
Great stuff! Xâs debut âLos Angelesâ is a great early LA punk record I think youâll love. That said my fave punk or post punk album ever is the 1977 debut Wire album âPink Flagâ.

My recommendation for the next Punk review would be Another Music in a Different kitchen by the Buzzcocks. I know you said previously you were a fan and like the Damned album, it doesn't have a bad track on it.
Proper punk! Can you hear the similarity to early Motorhead? Check out the first Motorhead album, On Parole for a real punk feel. Before Motorhead Lemmy was in a band called Hawkwind. Sid Vicious sold drugs at their gigs and said that if it wasn't for Hawkwind punk and the Sex Pistols would never have existed. Check out a live version of Brainstorm for an example. Then, if you think you're ready, check out Discharge! V similar to Motorhead but defo on the punk side of the line. Protest and Survive is a hard-core, proper anarchist punk classic! That is all đđ
My suggestion would be that the next Damned full album you should hear is Machine Gun Etiquette; their third album. The next punk band you should listen to is the Buzzcocks. I'd do their debut album as well. It's called Another Music In A Different Kitchen. Singles Going Steady is a great compilation of their singles and is also a great listen. After that then we can start talking about bands like the Stranglers or the Clash.
Next punk album should be Crass - Christ, The Album. Mind blowing stuff. đ

Sex Pistols: Never mind the bollocks is of course the most classic UK punk album. But this one is right next to it.
I love it too, but it's a dirge compared with the pace of this. Trying to imagine a world in which this was the only UK punk album that existed!

finished. Not got much to say can't find the words to say how great it was to watch your reaction. It will have to be facts, let's start at end yeah guitar did not do much on last track it was a cover of song by The Stooges who you reacted to as proto punk. Album recorded and mixed 10 days! I feel most songs have 2 meanings Fish could be literal and "smell a fish" a phrase to be suspicious but mostly New Rose can be about in love with new romantic partner but also in love with a new music scene that was just starting in the UK then round world for first UK punk single quite remarkable and debut album too.
you will love The Saints, Australian (Brisbane?) Band who were current to UK punk and perhaps doing same before more credited bands.

@@TheChadTI they were incredible. Like the Sex Pistols, they only lasted a couple years but what they produced in that short period of time was so impactful! If you havenât already done so I highly recommend looking up Henry Rollins talking about his love for them, itâs spread over 4 parts and goes for like 40 minutes.

I would like to recommend an album by an Australian band called THE SAINTS, called '(I'm) stranded', I believe they had more success over here in the UK than they did back home. they even made a brief appearance in a TV show called 'the return of the saint' (it's probably on YT somewhere). I certainly played STRANDED to death back in '77

Loved that reaction! Original punkrock. New Rose... I mean... Listen to f.ex. The Adverts "3 chord wonders", or Alberto y lost trio paranoias, " Fuck you", or the censord BBC version, "Thank you". Hillarious and brilliant pieces of arty punkrock from -77.
While you are at it, you might appriciate ATV's ( alternative T.V's ) song " How much longer'". Think you'd fancy that quite well. Crispy U.K accents. that album is just great from start to finish. They made other great albums too like i definitely recommend âmachine gun etiquetteâ and âthe black albumâ because them two albums have a post-punk sound but also have the same energy of âdamned damned damnedâ.
90s punk has some great bands as well, post punk may be called that but it never really died. Bad Religion, Rancid, and NoFX would be some example bands that would be a good place to drop in to see what 15-20 years did to evolve the genre.

Your reactions are fun! I'm going to be the odd person out. I'm not a huge fan of punk but-
1. The Damned is the best punk band.
2. "Ignite" is an amazing song if you like high energy.
3. I like the album "Anything". Not a punk album but gothic. This was a dark and very theatrical album.
"In Dulce Decorum" is a haunting anti-war song.
4. The Shadow of Love and Curtain Call are also great songs and more techno ventures, showing more musical virtuosity and maturity.
5. The band's lineup has changed so many times so every album is unique. But that insane high-energy drumming on their debut is none other than Rat Scabies.

The next best thing is watching anybody react to an album for the first time.
Anyone who sees this, check out Honey Bane's "Girl on the Run," coming from the early Crass family. Very unique riff and jam. Kinda rare, not a lot of people know it.

My fav song on this album is definitely See Her Tonite itâs so groovy to me and also theyâre drummer Rat Scabies is easily one of the very best drummers in punk history
While I love this album with all my heart, and you being a lover of post punk I think the only thing left for you to do is listen to The STOOGES. There would be no Damned, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Clash, etcâŠ. Without the STOOGES. They and the MC5 influenced every punk band. But the STOOGES were so far ahead of their time that people are still catching up to them. I recommend going in order of their discography because it puts things into perspective with when they came out. Quite possibly the most underrated band of all time even though they are in the rock and roll hall of fame. They never had fame in their career. But influencing several decades of music is better than commercial success in my book.
Btw, the last song -âI Feel Alrightâ is a STOOGES SONG!

Hi, first time I heard a song of them was in a serie of MTB videos from UK, Earthed (1,2,3 mainly), by Alex Rankin. 2000 to 2005. Perfects song for the sport, New Rose, I Feel Alright and Neat Neat Neat blew my mind.

Thoughts on '(final thoughts)': If one is intrigued by origins, and the origins within those, there really is no greater starting-point for punk rock appreciation than this album. 21:08 For appreciation of any 'post' genre, it's most necessary to appreciate actual genre [or sub-genre] it springs from; so it's not really surprising [to me] Kira would connect with this touchstone of an album.
