In 78 I travelled to see Genesis headlining at Knebworth . An unannounced Roy Harper strolled on stage to start the day with his guitar and gave us a wonderful version of “One Of Those Days In England “ to get the day off to a magical, start. A treasured memory.

Love this song and the album as a whole. Great delivery from Roy. - If you want to do another full album i would humbly suggest the album Bullinamingvase. Or for single tracks- ‘I hate the white man’ (not a race song but more an anti capitalism and 70s society song) and ‘When an old cricketer leaves the crease’ a hymn to lost youth and wrapped in analogy to the sport.

There's a world of difference between Stiff Little Fingers, earlier today, and Roy Harper. Interestingly my best mate was Stiff Little Fingers fan and I was a Roy Harper fan and in 1993 both Roy and SLF were on the same bill at a small festival in Brighton. The only time we went to gig together and a great time was had. Thanks for some good memories JP

Roy is a big student of history, and a lot of his songs focus on culture and how it has moved and changed. I've read that the "woman" in Me and My Woman may be referencing the planet. The song is a question, according to Roy. Where to? We're alive here on the planet for such a brief amount of time, and who are we and what is our real relationship to this planet we live on? What do we do with it all? The hardships and heartache, loves won and lost, past traumas, and how we deal with all of it as we make our way through life. That's my interpretation of it. Roy had a very tumultuous childhood. His mother died two or three weeks after he was born, and his stepmother was a religious zealot (Jehovah's Witness precisely) who basically said she didn't want him. He was a troublemaker as a kid, spent some time in jail at a young age, joined the Royal Airforce to get away from home and attempted to fake insanity to get out only to be subjected to electric shock therapy against his will. Eventually he deserted the Royal Airforce and basically lived on the streets, traveling all across Europe and writing poems at night and learning to pair his poetry with his guitar playing. Eventually he made a record of course and enjoyed enough success to kind of gradually wrestle as much freedom from his producers as possible. Stormcock served as a real tipping point in his career I think, but not in a commercially successful way. When it was released, EMI basically had no budget left to market the album. There were no singles on the album as well, so the album did poorly despite it being lauded by many as his best album. After Stormcock Roy doubled down and he became a lot more progressive. 20 min long songs that filled up whole sides of an album, a lot of experimentation, and diminishing returns due to Roy being very uncompromising. He wanted to make his music true to his vision and as far as he was concerned the producers and record companies weren't going to stop him. Famously on the album HQ, which featured another Roy song you reacted to called The Game, Roy was basically told that the album would never sell in America if he kept the album cover art, which featured Roy walking on water. So it was considered blasphemy. Roy didn't compromise, he didn't "sell out," and as a result by the early 80's record companies wanting nothing to do with him because of how difficult he was to work with. Famously he submitted his album "Descendants of Smith" to a bunch of record companies under a few pseudonyms. They loved the album, but as soon as they found out it was Roy they dropped any potential deals. His stubborn defiance against "the system" ends being Roy's most vital and debilitating quality. He made the music he wanted to, but at the price of success for a lot of his career.

I have always believed that there was a real woman in there somewhere. Roy has a unique way when he writes about women . Having a past such as you've described, the man at this stage was surely in need of some good loving. It would be strange for him not to write songs about it. Just an opinion. Nothing will ever shake it loose however.

One of Roy's more stirring epics that concludes this majestic album with some strange Harperian magic. Like the majority of his albums, nobody seemed too impressed, and like Nick Drake's music, it sells in vastly superior copies to today's listeners. It took a while, but thanks for completing this seventies diamond. To end my gushing, if you have plans to give another of his albums a chance, go with "Valentine" or "Bullinamingvase"! Nice work Justin. 😊

Nice. I think the first two verses are what set up the song, and then all that other stuff in the middle is like two seconds of thought and consideration till he comes back in with "the cuckoo she moves..." and then we're back to the song. It's brilliantly done whatever I think.

Was lucky to see Roy play in a small venue, with his son, Nick, the support act. I'd highly recommend Nick's music, too. Smithereens is my favourite. Once saw Nick play, where one of his guitar strings broke mid song, he continued singing the song, whilst quickly restringing and tuning, finishing off the song on guitar perfectly. Never seen anything like that before!

Maybe I'm going to say something stupid but the intonation in Roy Harper's voice reminds me a lot of the way Ian Anderson sang in the album Minstrel in the Gallery (released 4/5 years later). Even the superb string arrangements make me think of it and I wonder if Ian Anderson would not have been inspired by Roy Harper somewhere...

@@Katehowe3010 This does not surprise me and it confirms what I suspected. I just read an old interview with Glenn Cornick which mentions that Ian Anderson was really into Roy Harper's work at the end of the 60s/early 70s, so in the end I really felt it ! And come to think of it, it's even certain pieces of the 1972 aborted Sessions at the Château d'Hérouville that make me think of certain parts of "Me And My Woman" (as much for the guitar arpeggios as for the vocal intonation).

    • @CthulhuWaitsDreaming

@@CthulhuWaitsDreaming Glad to know that I'm not the only one to make the comparison and it's so obvious that it's very close to the Chateau D'Isaster tapes that it escaped me at first listen and it's especially the string arrangements that are reminiscent of certain passages from the album Minstrel in the Gallery but with regard to the voice intonations and certain melodies as well as the acoustic guitar arpeggios, everything recalls The Chateau D'Isaster Tapes !!!
It's impossible that Anderson was not inspired by "Me And My Woman" so much it reminds us of what he will do in 1972 on these unfinished tapes.
With hindsight, I even wonder if this might not be one of the reasons why Anderson did not wish to go further in the recordings at the time and that he went directly to A Passion Play (which retains some parts of these aborted sessions but not the ones that are so reminiscent of Roy Harper's piece).

To anyone complaining about the length of the song, many of his longer songs are poems that are later set to music. They are not intended to be 3 minute pop songs.

hes a fave of mine. hes always up there with led zep floyd mr hendrix mr marley the mac .all the passion that flows.. theres no comparison to felling music.
roy was very political but all still applied. as is that song on the rare twinflame divine union. 1 is a flop n roy captures it here. theyre to come back n leave their rebound/easy to control icky mess theyve made n involved so many broken hearts in their wake of trying to find that energy they didnt feel worthy of in another.. the grass wasnt greener it was astro turf at best n there in lies their delusional life. they got played like they played their twin, cheating for yrs coz they wouldnt work thru the pain of their early childhood abuses like thrir counterpart had. instead they sabotaged n betrayed this woman(or man dep on their energy) coz they didnt trust this 'never experienced before' unconditional nurturing pure love, sharing of healthy energy giving ..they didnt know how to give back. goid tome not a long time types that became toxic n narcissistic. he envied that overwhelming energy n became her worse enemy but never told her about the competition n need for her to chase him to make him feel more than he felt for himself. they dont love rhemselves n u cam onky love anither as deeply as u love urself sadly. he didnt want to change he got enough options to choose from.. now hes kicking himself to the point of not wanting to live on with seeinv her n being in that energy hw now craves ..after he gets katfished for 100k ..that couldvr built a stable home for the 1 he wants to be with forever..that options iff thr tavpe for many bur he has to try. not bother what zhe wants ..he still has to win thus competition at all costs .n that why shell say no. final answer. she knows her worth as the emress n wont accept a would ve emporer tgat doesnt wanna putin the work for her n cant rscape the fact that there are still options. n he stilll feels veneath her so need his ego stroking coz he wont do rhe work. but he wants to hold her back n stay under his spell of manipulations. they go further dark or come towards the light but are still work shy for staying this rel theu they still wont attain. is a sad story that lives still. i can attest to that. its the 3D n 5D war thats going on on the spiritual plain coz theyre
they choose some1 like them n watch some1 else with their true love n how inlove he is with her n her him n watches her reaching heits he could nnever imagine n realises more n more exactly what hes done lost but doesnt see he lost it for us both. too self-centred to acknoledge her pain thru it all. its a 1sided love that does a 180 for the remainder of his tome here. drugs, sex addictions n trying to fit in in those dark places, held them back. devil is as the devil does
💎battle evermore by zep is another twinflame songs.
there are only 144,144 twinflame couples n they rarely reincarnate together. this was their last opportunity to get this right. this is why i explained this a lil. its by nowhere near exhausted. the story is very complicated n an emotionally draining rollercoaster if emotions that few can withstand inc 1 of the twinflames. its the most profound love that nobody understands its a depth that as i say is that rare no1 gets to feel it.
such passion is intenselyrich (anogram of my born name) 😉🤗💕💖 xxx
