  • In today's video we take a look at and review the Neo Geo MVSX bartop arcade by Unico. This machine is licensed by SNK and is very similar in style to the popular Arcade1Up units. We'll take a look at the games, the emulation, the build, and controls and see how it all stacks up!

    @PabstOban Před 3 lety +15

    This product actually interested me. Having watched a number of reviews, it falls just short of my expectations. Here are my "Non-Hands On" impressions for what it's worth.
    -First and foremost is price. While the MSRP doesn't scare me... what you are getting at that retail price had better be worth it. This isn't a $75 mini console or a $150 arcade stick with an emulator in it... this is a bartop arcade system. I don't think $450 is too much to ask... as long as you do it right.
    -Game selection. I think it's wonderful that we live in an age where we can get 50 officially licensed games for a reasonable price. That being said, we have also been sold these games multiple games already. The only reason we are willing to buy them again is because the cost of admission is so affordable. For a 50 game line up... not having ANY shooters or ANY beat-um-ups is very short sighted. We don't need every blessed release of King of Fighters at the determine of lacking a small selection of shooters and beat-um-ups. Now... if they planned to make expanding the library legitimately for a reasonable price... that's forgivable and something I would have happily done down the line.
    -Build quality.
    For me this incorporates the design and construction of the unit, the designers choice in materials and the emulation/front end software. I'm sure a lot of people sat at a long table and discussed the plan, the budget, and very smart people made calls. They spent a good bit of money in some places, and went on the cheaper side for other things. There are a lot of pieces to this so I'm going to break it up.
    -From what I can see, the front end an emulator is nothing to complain about. Yes, emulation is going to have some lag, that's to be expected... but there are tweaks you can make that keep that to a nearly unnoticeable. For instance, the PolyMega seems to have made these labor investments, and what they produced is a marvel for software emulation.
    -Next is the enclosure. Every review I have seen has spoken highly at the ruggedness of the cabinet... and have mentioned that it is nothing gypsy like the Arcade1Up. This might be the strongest selling point if you ask me. You can't get this wrong, because if you do, you lost the customer who actually would spend $450 on this, and it looks like Unico nailed this. Bravo!
    -Marquee and speakers. These are details that could get overlooked. If you ask me, investing a little money making these impressive is worth it. The marquee seems fine, but it would have been nice if they stuck to the Big Red design and threw 2 mini-marquees that could be swapped out with after market reproductions that fit this unit (hey more opportunities for you to upsell Unico!). The speakers seem "fine". Again, I think it would be worth it to invest an extra $10 to have some commanding speakers that make that attract mode dominate the room. For me, I think this was a miss, but not a deal breaker.
    -Decisions around button layout. I... like you, share the opinion that I would have much rather seen them stick to the traditional 4 button spread. This is a mini Big Red. If people really wanted to hack this and put CPS games on it, they probably could have just bought a different product, and done it cheaper. I do however get why Unico did it this way. Even putting it in the buyers subconscious that they could one day convert this to a multi-cade that would play CPS fighting games makes that $450 price point seem a heck of a lot more justifiable and a strong selling point. While I don't agree with that decision, I can't fault them for this. Again... not a deal breaker for me, just an esthetic miss for me personally.
    -Controller components. This is where it all falls apart for me. Quality stick/button components aren't "break the bank" financial calls for these companies. I have no idea how many units they are producing... but this is something they could have purchased in bulk and paid maybe $25-30 more for... instead of whatever they went with which seems very chintzy. If they had made the investment... the Arcade aficionados would have creamed in their pants and they would have HAPPILY paid an extra $50-100 more for them. All of the reviews had the same gripes... mushy buttons... too much throw in the stick, stick caps that were too loose... exc, exc. All of them came to the conclusion that they could always replace the parts themselves... but the average guy doesn't want to invest time and money improving something this expensive that they JUST bought... especially for $450. For me, this was the deal breaker.
    I'm in for $450 if they did a bunch of little things right. Even if making some of these small adjustments it pushed the price point upwards to $499-549, I could stomach it to not have to fix something that shouldn't need fixing.
    Unico might do well in the future to consult CZcamsrs while they are making their designs so that they don't go and manufacture things that their target audience will also gripe about. I imagine most of their input would be inexpensive to free... and the end result would be that their final product would little to no criticism.
    Great review! You did well not to watch anyone else's review. It's interesting what some reviewers catch and others don't and vice-versa.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  Před 3 lety +4

      I didn’t talk about them much but I really wish the speakers were elevated to ear level/under marquee. I think they are simple 3W speakers and to your point, something maybe a little punchier would help sell the ambience. They’re definitely not bad by any stretch, but I know what wonders swapping small speakers can do for actual cabs and I’d like to see this get that type of treatment. I suspect we will see someone spruce this up via a mod and possibly even add a passive sub.

    I love your videos and your review was the one I was waiting for (along with MLP's one).
    I was about to order one but with all this info, I think I'm going to wait for a price drop or a good hack to buy this. What put me off of this was mostly the hassle of swapping the sticks.
    I liked the game selection (then again, as a mexican I can't get enough KOF), but I agree that it needs more variety (like Neo Turf, Pulstar and some Puzzles).
    I already have an ASP with the hylo hack and a Neogeo mini with the pads, so that's how I get my Neo fix. I might buy a second ASP and set it up for a much cheaper two player arcade action.
    Keep up the good the good work.

      At $110 on Amazon, the ASP is a pretty decent buy imo. You get a pretty good stick overall and the ability to play some decent titles out of the Neo’s lineup. With the Hylo Hack you can add the entire library if you so choose. The stick is easily modded too so if you decide you want to fool around in the future you can. Imo there’s more bang for the buck with the ASP.

    Great video! Judging by your review and others, it seems like this thing's build quality is closer to the stuff that Rec Room Masters makes rather Arcade 1Up. Super solid looking build. And like you, I am disappointed by the price and the goofy 6 button layout. If this thing was closer to $300 I would be all over it.

  • @SaviorGabriel
    @SaviorGabriel Před 3 lety +1

    I was wondering if you could map some macros to the two additional buttons. It'd come in handy for the fighting games that utilize multiple button inputs like mapping A+B together to one button for example. That would certainly justify the extra buttons. But it appears that you can't from the looks of it. I'd like to see them incorporate that feature in a future firmware update since this thing allows for it.
    Also, thanks for going over the internals. I saw other reviews mention they weren't allowed to do so. All I would really have to change with this are the springs, and the gates.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, we weren’t allowed to show the insides (I got that call after I had filmed some of it already). I didn’t think sharing the sticks and buttons was too much in violation of that.
      Swapping the spring and gate is definitely the easiest way to go so you don’t have to desolder the connectors.

  • @misterkeebler

    Nice vid. I think this unit looks really good as far as the Home Arcade market goes. The arcade1ups with lit marquees go for $400 minimum and tend to have 2 to 5 games, so for this unit to have 50 and look to have a similar build quality or better (definitely better monitor and filter options), i think it's great. I also greatly prefer the convertible bartop to 3/4 scale design as opposed to the small riser/large cab sizing design on an Arcade1up.
    The toughest aspect of a sell for me is their own ASP, as that is obviously cheaper and I feel the stock controls are solid for the most part. Im going to keep an eye on this product though. Im very interested to see if the company sends out additional games as updates, or if the community decides to add some things. I'm actually pretty partial to the Legends Ultimate arcade cab from Atgames for the ease of adding games and the overall solid controls.

The emulation is scaled properly. There seems to be very low latency which is good. I remember the ps2 metal slug anthology on ps4 lol. I don’t mind the bartop. I don’t have a lot of space for a real cab so this is perfect. The only complaint I see is the button layout and lack of game variety. I am not a big neo geo fighting game fan. I do like metal slug and the shmups as well. Puzzle Bobble/bust-a-move also wouldn’t hurt on here. I know the button layout is catering to the hacking scene.
