Still remember this inning by Roy Dias. I travelled from Peradeniya (by train) as a university student to watch this match.My batch mate Dr Murshid and I watched this beautiful batting display by Roy. We could not believe how well we did until the fourth day. We thought we could win our first ever test. Lack of experience and panicking in the second inning against John Embury caused our downfall. However, we had many positives as well. Mahesh was a delight to watch behind the wicket. Arjuna batted bravely against Underwood. Asantha bowled great fast medium. Ajith deceived Tavare to get him stumped. These are some of my fading memories of this historic match. I am proud to say I was there as a young man. Feel so sad about the present day cricket in Sri Lanka. Almost unimaginable!
Not only was the batting glorious, but the commentary and the spectators were also brilliant. There were no unnecessary sounds, just cheering when necessary😊
One of the things u notice is how good our English Commentators were back then unlike the boring repetitive "parrots" we have now. I think the commentators were Bertie Wijesinghe and Skandakumar
I wouldn't say that our present english commentators are that pathetic... they are doing an excellent job. But, the sinhala commentators are problematic of coz
SL had,has & will have immense talent ,,see RoyDias facing Willis confidently,,!!!! Lankan's have faced from their begunning days itself faced these fast bowlers willises,Lilliees,,Imrankhans,Hadlees, while Indians struggled (rememeber 42/10) even after decades of experiences!!!!!!!!only in 1980s Indians could improve in these parameters?????
Dias and Aravinda are the best batsmen of our time. Unfortunately we do not have any videos how Sathasivam was playing, probably more talented than Roy and Ara.

Sri Lanka should have been given the test status much earlier, at least by late sixties or early seventies.
