  • Rothmans Asia Cup In Sharjah 1984
    #SunilGavaskar
    The 1984 Asia Cup (also known as the Rothmans Asia Cup) was the first edition of the Asia Cup. It was held in Sharjah, UAE, which was the location of the newly formed Asian Cricket Council. The new tournament was held between April 6-13, in 1984 and three teams took part: India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium hosted its first One Day International (ODI) matches.[1]
    The 1984 Asia Cup was a round-robin tournament where each team played the other once. India won both its matches, winning the inaugural Cup. Sri Lanka came in second while Pakistan lost both its matches.

      Well to be fair to them they had Imran and Miandad -two real giants -one their then best bowler and all rounder and other their best batsman - missing and Akram was yet to make his debut.. Anyways India and Pakistan were on even keel till 1986 Australasia Cup. If not for that last ball 6 the results wouldn't have been so skewed for next decade or so.

    • @seenoevil85
      @seenoevil85 Před 3 lety +2

      @@ruchit8588 India were also missing their backbone one day player Kapil Dev. And Azharuddin was yet to make his debut. So that makes it quite even. In Pakistan there is a lot of exaggeration regarding a glorious cricketing past, and they always make exaggerated claims regarding a supposed decline of Pakistan cricket during the last 10/15 years. In my view Pakistan cricket has been by and large been pretty much at the same standard during the last 45 years, since Mushtaq Muhammad's captaincy, minor ups and downs accepted. People need to romanticize the past, to pretend that there was a golden age that never existed.

    • @ruchit8588
      @ruchit8588 Před 3 lety +1

      @@seenoevil85 Well here is thing thing.. Imran was superior to Kapil as all rounder and definitely as a bowler.. Javed > Azhar and Akram well we haven't really found a response for that..May be if you have said Kohli and Bumrah and Dhoni hadn't debuted I would have agreed. Comparision is not just on quantity but also quality ! Pakistan's best period was 1985 thru 1999.. In the first 6-7 years of that period Imran,Miandad and Akram play a massive role. This team drew 3 series against the mighty West Indians and that was something. Yes I agree with you that that Pakistani fans over-exaggerate and also this team overall was an underachiever given their quality but it was brilliant team nevertheless

    • @seenoevil85
      @seenoevil85 Před 3 lety +1

      @@ruchit8588West Indies decline had already started by late 80s, when Pakistan drew those three series. All those three series were after the retirement of Michael Holding, and Roberts(Holding wasn't on the fall 86 Pakistan tour, he retired after the New Zealand tour next year March), and in 1988 the one test match Pakistan won on the 1988 tour, Malcom Marshall and Viv Richards were not playing. Pakistan's actual best years were in the late 70s under Mushtaq Muhammad, when they drew two consecutive series against Australia in Australia, the only time they toured Australia and didn't end up losing the series. And that was a powerhouse Australian side, with the Chappell Brothers, and Lillee and Thompson, at their peak.
      Regarding Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan comparison, you are relying on the overall career statistics. Remember Kapil Dev hardly missed a series for 15+ years, he played far more international cricket than Imran Khan. While Imran Khan was always a world class test cricket fast bowler, his batting developed more in the late 80s, in the early 80s Kapil Dev was clearly superior to Imran Khan, as a one day cricketer. He had just almost singlehandedly won a world cup for his country, including that memorable 175 not out against Zimbabwe(A Zimbabwe side that beat Australia Australia in that world cup).
      Same goes for the Azharuddin vs Wasim Akram comparison. Akram was barely going at 3 wickets per test match(often even lower) in the late 80s, while Azharuddin was averaging around 50, and also scored what remained the fastest century(till that time) of one day cricket.

    • @ruchit8588
      @ruchit8588 Před 3 lety +3

      @@seenoevil85 Let me drill some football size holes :-) (no offence) in your post.
      1. West Indian decline was in very early negligible stages in late 1980s.. They still had Greednige,Haynes,Richarson,Richards,Marshall,Patterson,Ambrose, Dujon and Walsh as also a decent Carl Hooper.
      2. You pick one test from 3 series--that is amusing.. But let me play along.. Yes Richards and Marshall weren't there .. But do you remember who was in that team? Again Greednidge, Haynes,Richardson,Dujon, Ambrose,Walsh, Hooper and Patterson.. And Patterson was back then one of most feared quickies.
      3.Okay so 1988 test win team had Richards and Marshall missing. Did you know when Pakistan beat Australia in 78-79 Aussies were missing Chappel (Greg), Lillie,Thommo,Marsh, Walters and Walker.. Even Pascoe wasn't there.. Atleast apply your own logic consistently.. But I will apply you logic.. 1976-77 win had Ian Chappell and Thommo missing too !! Remember you Marshall and Richards analogy..
      4. Your Imran vs Kapil comparision - just for ODIs.. This match was played in 1984. Did you do research and check their respective ODI numbers by end of 1984.. Imran averaged almost 35 with the bat and 23 with ball. Kapil was 27 with both bat and ball !! Kapil strike rate was very good indeed but even with that he was not better than Imran. Not even with that 175 !! The 175 and single handedly winning WC argument had me in splits..Kapil played a big role but not single handedly.. As if others didn't contribute !! Yashpal Sharma who scored 60 odd in the league win against Windies was just passing time.. As was Binny with 17 wickets and Jimmy Amarnath with back to back MOMs in Semis and Finals !! It is a kiddish argument at the very best.
      5. Finally I agree with you numbers about Akram and Azhar till end of 1980s. But re-read my post. I said Pakistan's best period was from 1985-99 and Akram played a significant role in that particularly in the first 6-7 years. So fast forward till 1992 and then check their numbers.. In any case Akram was a far more impactful player and a bigger matchwinner when compared to Azhar. Keep on rolling forward and you will understand what I mean..
      6. Why I said 1985-99 were Pakistan's golden years - They won a hell lot of things.. They won 3-4 back to back series in England, 3 drawn series vs West Indies, regulalrily thrashed New Zealand, Won a World up and reached a final, won 3 Australasia Cups, Won Nehru Cup (in India), 2 Toronoto Sahara Cups, Won test series in India and also an ODI series (1986-87), won numerous tournaments in Sharjah,won C&B series in Australia (first Asian team to do so) , drew a test series in South Africa , won majority of games against India.. A pretty impressive dossier !! Far more impressive than two drawn series one of which was against an anaemic Australia team !! And look at players who played in that era- Imran, Miandad, Anwar,Inzy, Yousuf,Malik, Akram,Waqar, Shoaib, Qadir,Latif,Razzaq,Mehmood, Saqlain,Qadir and Mushtaq... Some very impressive careers in that list. Their best ever certainly though there were never the World's best team in that period themselves (it was split between West Indies and Australia) but they were certainly mighty .. As a I kid growing up in 1980s and 1990 games against Pakistan were big because Pakistan was so strong .. There was far greater buzz.. Last 10-15 years and particularly in last 5 years game against Pakistan doesn't excite us even a quarter of what it used to.. We now know on most days we will win convincingly and I rest my case with that !
