It's time for a Japanese hot hatch showdown!
Mat's in what many consider to be the king of Japanese hot hatches - the Honda Civic Type R! And given what it's packing under the bonnet, it's easy to see why it's regarded so highly, as its 2-litre turbocharged engine can put down 320hp & 400Nm!
The question is, how will it fair against one of the most hotly-anticipated hot hatches of 2020 - the new Toyota GR Yaris! It may be down on power, with a 1.6-litre turbo pumping out 261hp & 360Nm, however, it does have one major advantage over the Type R - it's all-wheel-drive!
What do you think - does the FWD Civic Type R stand a chance in these wet conditions? Or will the lighter GR Yaris race to victory? There's only one way to find out - LET'S RACE!

That yaris has a huge future classic potential.
Absolutely
Given this is not going to be a limited production and will sell in huge numbers, it will be a long, long time before it becomes a future classic.
Hopefully people will still drive it once it becomes a classic and not keep it in their garages collecting dust.

That wasn’t a power steering failiure. When you don’t shift as you should and the car falls out it gives you that sign which is normal. Drivers fault not cars fault!
That makes no sense how does the car know you're not shifting properly if it's a manual gear box....

@@MJT-DA ahh ok I understand the problem. You didn't get the meaning of "sign". The guy with the comment with the phrase "it gives you a sign" meant that grind that practically warns you you are doing something wrong. And just because you asked only thing I have driven in my life is older manuals. Don't play the tough guy with a Hyundai. I have driven for the fields a Volkswagen Taro now last three years we got a ford ranger 2011 also driven sometimes an old mercedes "semi truck" and the not for work car a Volkswagen Passat 2004 I think maybe it was 2005. @@user-tl4sq8tk1c I'm not trying to act tough with a hyundai lol. Hyundai hasn't updated the G4GC engine transmission since 2003. So it's very old for a 2010. What I'm confused about is why would the power steering light come on if he missed a gear? Never heard of that in any car.

This is no test of these two , they are both about corners not drag races - but- 4WD is a big advantage in standing. starts and wet conditions. But despite the hype the regular model Type R is every bit as good to drive as the Yaris , a fabulous chassis, superb damping, gearchange, steering and brakes. Its also roomy and practical , much more so than the Yaris which is a toy by comparison. No reason to think the new FL1 Type R is not going to be at least as good , probably better so good luck Toyota - The Civic was the boss right to the end , AMG, VW, Renault, Cupra , Hyundai N, - all second best to the mighty Honda,

Matt talking about Yaris while being in the Yaris? That's cheeky editing
Hello, how are you ? I hope so ... well looking to see good content about cars and I got here and I really liked what I saw ... congratulations on the videos ... greetings from Brazil.
it just shows how much that Yaris was meant for rally from its quick acceleration, good grip and good brakes. Also how its high top speed isn't so great and lost the civic.
So true. Top speed is totally irrelevant in real live (from someone who bought a new Impreza in 1999)
@T D In the wet maybe... in the dry the CTR would surprise you, even Chris Harris said the grip in the CTR was comparable to it's AWD rivals.
@T D Drag races are bias towards AWD cars and FWD just can't compete, especially in the wet. In a rolling start (in the dry) the CTR would win. Check the Nürburgring times... the CTR is much quicker than the Yaris GR, it laps 12 seconds quicker...that's quite a difference but I still really like the Yaris GR, it's a cracking car.
@T D Roundabouts? What about corners? I mean it's horses for courses, if you rather a small nimble car then it's the Yaris obviously. If you rather a larger, more practical car then it's the Honda.
@@Monkiimagic As the commenter's previous point alludes to they're two different beasts that excel in their own areas. Either could trounce the other given the conditions so it depends on what you value. No doubt it'll suffer in the rolling races, being geared for rallying the final drive suffers and so it loses it's puff in higher speeds. Still impressive for what it is and how close it still was. It is a cracking car and so is the CTR, they're really top class.
I think on the track any circuit that can avail of performance in the 60-120+ range will cede advantage to higher powered rivals.
That said, one journo made a point on its 'off-the-line' party trick which is fun however you cut it with it's 0-30 being 1.48s. Faster than an Audi TT RS, Ferrari 488, Lambo Urus, Honda NSX, McLaren 570 and any model 3. I don't know the veracity of these claims since they're far-fetched, where the data is from and under what conditions. It's quite a thing say but even if it was all false and in striking distance - and it is unholily rapid off the line for what it is.

Yes because if you go to the track you always make sure you put as many as you can in the car
We have been waiting for this one! Already know it will be a good video!
Damn good cars. Great videos
hello I'm from Indonesia, here I got about 125 units of GR Yaris and it's been sold out, in only about 24 hours, greetings from Indonesia

I actually found myself cheering like it were a sporting event.
That GR Yaris in black looks absolutely stunning. Great looking vehicle from Toyota.
You can add a small lap test too to all the tests you do. It will show the nimbleness of the cars.
I love the GR Yaris but living in America since we don’t have one I absolutely DID NOT expect it to cost that much
"lets test acceleration in the RAIN" - carwow
Well why not? Not like you'll never drive in the rain, plus both card are in the same boat..
@@professorbriancox5858 How about you be disciplined and wait till it's a nice sunny day to sling a 3000lbs missile around?
@@jordan.fa5592 I couldn't be that well behaved I'm afraid, too tempting to get in my car 😂
For real I hate it when they do that. Like why not reschedule lol? Sort of nullifies the comparison when they do that.
@@professorbriancox5858 u def didn’t know that one is fwd tht makes an exponential deficit to the type r and as well as they are stick so sorry but lousy shifts play into this
It’ll be interesting to see what the difference would be in the Honda’s preferred dry conditions. See if it’s power advantage makes much of a difference then.
I would like to see a three-wide competition between the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and the Civic R. It would be interesting to see what happens when there is an extra 20 plus horses coming out of the little triple in the Corolla.
Watching those Yaris prices rocket. I remember when the Impreza P1 came out and the carpetbaggers got in. Maybe I'll get a GR in 10 years when prices have settled.
Matt drag race the last 3 generations of Porsche turbo s
So the TypeR is slower on wet Track Start than a AWD - how surprising 😂
Yeah I have a GR Yaris coming next year and it being faster than a Type R Civic in the dry from a standing start is not going to happen, it also would have faired worse on the rolling starts as well since the AWD helped out with traction massively. I would be interested to see the pair of them go through a tight twisty course though.
Civic is better with fwd than awp on wet... yaris is really weak.
@@kubson012 Yeah I don't think you realise that there is 2 different design philosophies between the 2 cars.
@@bob778_6 so you didn't drive but it's coming next year so you know it's faster than a type R? Am I missing something here
@@bob778_6 Just ignore him. He's been blabbering a lot around the comments.
Electron handbrake? How do you do hill starts in a manual with one of those?
Did Mat just sat in a Honda Civic? I didn’t think I would live to see this day.
Edit: 06:24 DID HE JUST COMPLIMENT THE HONDA? I think i am dreaming
that may be a fast Civic, but the other one is a “homologation special”!
Yes it is built for one purpose only WRC!

@@South4153 It's still a street car, they needed the main mechanical functions to be homologated, but people expect things like A/C, media, etc.

Last civic type r at a UK dealer has sold for £40k! 😯😯 That's a standard GT model not the limited edition
