  • My first time changing my 911's oil and filter. This job was a lot of fun and pretty simple, even for a newbie like me. Check it! Note: ALWAYS consult a professional before attempting this kind of job if you’re unsure about any parts of it before you begin. I’m not a pro, as my channel name states! I’m learning as I go.

      What's funny is Porsche recommends only changing your oil once every 2 years or 15,000 miles, and only change the oil filter every 2 years or 30,000 miles. Insanity.

    I thought you had that very well organised and I loved seeing it all laid out beforehand. You’d obviously been looking on CZcams which as well as google are excellent.
    I wondered if the filter was too tight but you’d looked it up
    ( my late Dad was a brilliant mechanic and took a little new oil on his finger and rubbed it round the face of the filter housing every time to aid removal
    I’d tackle that now and yes after a year I’d change it before storage but regardless of the miles
    It’s so satisfying afterwards I’d do it twice a year
    Well done 👍

    Great instructional video.
    The fill capacity specification (after draining the oil for 20 minutes) is 8.5qt without changing the filter or 8.75qt with a filter change.
    Porsche recommends only changing the filter every other oil change, but personally I'd change it every time to be safe.

    Great tip at 5:53 re checking the old filter carefully for any debris indicating engine wear!
    Another few things I've learned through experience are:
    1) Before draining the old oil, run the engine at idle for 90-120 seconds before draining, that'll warm up the oil and help significantly with drainage.
    2) For £20/US$30 a magnetic sump plug does a similar job to the above and is easier to inspect.
    3) Apply a small amount of fresh oil to the contact sections of the oil filter housing before replacing to improve the o-ring's effectiveness.

    Great that you showed cutting open the filter element. I always did this on our 987 Boxster and a friends 986 Boxster. I run a magnet through it to catch anything, but with that IMS thing you are looking for super shiny chrome bits which signals the ball in the bearing are disintegrating. If you get super paranoid you can send your oil in to get tested. The IMS is a great thing to get done when you need a clutch. Always keep an eye out for the rear main seal leaking - You'll see that between the engine and transmission mating surface. Nice job! Love the Joakim tune - I've used that one as well ;) You save yourself a couple hundred again! Yea! ...And, you have more info about the health of your engine. Win-Win! Franny

    @mariodesmo Před 7 lety +3

    Great to see folks doing their own maintenance, however there are a few things to consider when changing the oil
    (from a 911 owner of 35 years):
    1 - Lose the watch (or any other jewelry); you don't want to get oil all over your Apple watch, or jewelry for that matter.
    2 - Lose the long sleeves, same as above.
    3 - Loosen the oil filter assy, then immediately remove the ratchet and removal tool by hand so you don't get oil all over your tools when the oil filter assy breaks free.
    4 - Remove the oil filter first, you won't have hot dripping oil draining out of the engine to work around.
    5 - Set your ratchet before going under! Make sure it is set properly to either remove or tighten.
    6 - Good Luck!

    is it okay to change the oil on ramps? I have always wondered.

    • @mikec1096
      @mikec1096 Před 7 lety +1

      you don't have to have the ramps even on the 996 911. it does however make things easier. The main issue is how much space /clearance do you want to have. I think a little extra space under the rear of the car makes it easier to get at the drain and the oil filter. I have a lower profile jack that i use to raise the back wheel and then I just slide a slab of flat 2-3 inch tall wood under each rear tire. One time I had an issue with 1999 buick that overshot the ramp on one side. I ended up having to jack the car up and refitting the ramp. Not a big deal in the end but it lost my confidence in driving up on ramps. They have a tendency to slide forward or backward when you try to drive up on them. If you watch his video you can see he didn't evne make it all the way up to the flat part of the ramp. Not the best situation. Either way you should chalk /block the front tires/rear tires so that car doesn't roll when on ramps or on the wood slab that I use. You can learn from my mistakes or make your own.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 7 lety

      I agree with Mike C. I was still able to drain all of the oil out of the engine while the car was on the minor incline. I was able to refill the engine with just shy of 9 quarts of oil and it took it the oil measure back up to 1 bar below full (on the instrument cluster's oil measure when you first turn the ignition). I didn't take the car all the way up on the ramps, just enough to get a little more space to work. I used plastic wheel blocks from the same manufacturer in front of the forward wheels to make sure the car didn't roll. I have a low profile jack too but I wasn't 100% sure about where to jack up the car, besides the 4 jack points by each wheel. Ideally I would have put the car up on jack four stands but I haven't attempted that yet.

      jeff nelson I’m an Apple Uber geek after converting to everything Apple in 2008. iPods, MacBook Pro, iMac, several Apple TVs in the house, every gen of iPhone, etc... love it all... but the Apple Watch doesn’t really do it for me. I bought it from eBay for $150 to try it out, it’s a Gen 1 and was new. Battery dies around 5pm each day, the constant pinging of emails and app notifications is soooo annoying so I put it on ‘do not disturb’ which then defeats the purpose of having it. The only I like about it is the fitness motivation stuff. It reminds me to get up, it tracks movement, steps... etc... but then so does my iPhone.
