SPOILERS I don’t think it’s a problem that the characters around Grey are not that fleshed out. Not every character needs to be detailed, and the movie had a very small budget to spend a lot of time outside the story. The point gets across. The leader of the upgraded crew was a veteran who seems to have been idealistic about being a soldier once, and after he was discarded and got a second chance through technology, he gave himself to that, since it’s what made him and others like him the “superior race”. He tells Grey not to give himself up to his emotions, and once Grey uses his brother’s death against him, he gets the upper hand, when Stem has nothing left to fight with. That’s a great point in the movie, because Grey giving up control to his emotions is what got him to have no control at all, and it shows Stem’s limitations when it comes to real humanity. Yeah, we don’t see much of them, but for the small amount they have, the movie gets the most out of them. The main villain is Stem anyway, and we get a lot of time with it.
Love the "im not proud of that" grey says after finally killing his wifes murderer. Shows he was truly human until the end, makes it a more tragic ending when stem takes over
what would a sequel have? The only guy in the world that could stop STEM is dead, the main character is stuck in madness. The cop? Dead. The other AIs? Dead. The rival company? Pretty much dead with STEM in charge of Vessel. No one else knows about it. A sequel would have to be a completely different story.
The only one that saw something about it and survived was the hacker. But was only there for the money and didn't really cared about what was going on.
@@abhijithu6323 so what would the hacker do? Start another company? Go full Mr. Robot with a team of hackers against a big company? It would not have the same essence that the first movie have.

Spoilers below: The villians in this movie were weak in reference to their depth due to the main villian of the movie being "stem". The movie did a great job at explaining the villians motive at the end of the movie. The lack of depth of the other bad guys characters is understood by the big reveal at the end of the movie because they were being controlled by the main villian. Just my opinion.
I agree. The villains are underdeveloped, but it HAD to be that way. You can't have a Black Panther Killmonger type villain every movie. The fact that the "villains" aren't really the villains and you're supposed to see them as this evil faceless force makes the twist that much better.
Yeah if you look in the first fight where he goes against the first guy in the kitchen the guy says “why are you making me do this” at first you presume he’s talking to grey but after the ending it’s pretty clear stem was taking over him too
So what's (Jamey) the hacker's deal after he or she hacked grey and gave stem full control before Jamey leaves says "I'm sorry WE can't let them win" what's going on here? Who must not win?

Spoiler warning: I love how the progression of stem throughout the movie reflects a realistic possible progression for AI in real life. It seems so useful and allows us to do the impossible but the more you let it take over or the more you lean into it the slippier the slope is. The more the AI takes over the less control we have and the more it sees us as insignificant and unnecessary. Really interesting look on AI.
Saw this last night completely blind too & w/ semi-low expectations b/c I don't like action movies generally anyway. This was a pleasant surprise, the beginning was 'meh' but it sure picked up & the audience laugh a good amt of times. I find action scenes boring but the unique way they played it out & even shot it had me glued to the screen (except for the gory parts which I looked away). I loved this film. I had no idea what to expect from it, as went in blind to view it. Loved that the film title makes you think the “Upgrade” is what is happening to Gray, with his new implant after the injury, including the other upgraded humans in the story. Loved even more to realise that the “Upgrade” is actually for Stem, to be made flesh! Loved how this steady body-cam used in this film for both the Stem fight scenes, and at the end of the film when Stem/human walks to camera, showing he’s fully integrated. Loved the final moments of the film, when Stem has finally come forward to fully take control of his new body, and with it now fully occupying Gray’s body, the first taste sensations it experiences is the taste of blood. Seems like Stem does indeed have a taste for blood. The virtual reality life wasters in the hacker’s lair was a great forecast to what Gray’s life would finally be by the end of the film. I’m sad for the character to be forced into this virtual life, as he doesn’t think it has meaning. Yet, when he’s thrust into it... he finds the happiness of his own personal matrix subroutine created by Stem to keep him there, at least happily contented. It’s doubtful that he’d question Stem ever again, likely putting it all down to a coma Dream while in the hospital, with his happiness focus on his wife. A film that gripped my attention right from the beginning, and carried me through so many emotions as I journeyed with Gray’s experiences, and Stems’ chess-like playing of him, and every other notable character in the film. For me, this has great re-watchability, and would be an easy upgrade to an A+ film. After watching this film, you’re the first reviewer I came to, to hear your thoughts. Great review, Chris.
I was just about to type this exact thing. It's nice to see a film, sci-fi / action no less, with an original premise and a talented director that ISN'T a big budget "for everyone" type release.
I know a lot of other great films have been released this year that I really enjoy, but for some reason, I keep coming back to this movie and watching. I've probably watched it 10 times by now. I love this movie so much. Even though another movie probably deserves #1 movie of the year, this movie is probably my favorite movie of the year, or perhaps even favorite of the past few years.
Currently my movie of the year. I walked out of the movie very satisfied with the story I saw. I can't argue with the points you made, but that didn't take away from the movie for me.
This director should make a Bio Shock movie....The atmosphere was amazing and this actor needs to do more stuff. Even the way he kind of over does his movements like done by a machine, too precise was really convincing.
I agree with nearly everything you said here Chris. I also went into this movie completely blind, and although I was surprised and having fun as the plot got going (although the first act being pretty predictable) the ending totally caught me off guard and sealed this movie up as a fantastic one. I would tell anyone curious to please watch this movie and watch it blind like we did!
As a reader of the scythe books, I was inclined to like stem and I did. I trusted stem and boy did the ending flip me over. Such a good movie and the cinematography was fantastic - well done Stefan.
Been a fan of LMG ever since The OC, say what you will about the show but he was great for all the 8 episodes he was in. I got so hyped about this film as it was shot in Melbourne. There is a freeway scene in particular that was filmed just down the road from where I live, so been following for a while now. So psyched it's getting good buzz! Can't wait to see it
Just to let you know if you ever read this, I was never much into movies, their production, actors, etc. And still to this day, meh not really, but your enthusiasm, and your productions is enough to keep me coming back. You're just entertaining and a easy listen, is all I'm saying. Thanks :D
I said the same thing. The actors look alike, there is a voice in both of their heads that does all the fighting for them, the characters personalities are identical and both movies just have a similar feel to them. I think upgrade was the better one though
8.5/10 SPOILERS : So at first I felt like hardcore henry was gonna be the vibe but then it changed to the classic vengeance of a loved one and then half way through the movie I realized the plot was definitely becoming bigger and the death of his wife was less important but through out the movie you begin to develop more of a connection to the main character which drives you to want him to win the war Between himself and stem I felt more connected to him then I have to most character in movies and to end it off he gets put into a mental prison of happiness which he says earlier in the movie “why would anyone want to live in VR”. At the end of the movie you begin to piece together how it will end but then you find out that the main character didn’t get a single win his wife died, it was a set up, stem killed the other upgraded because they were still part human, and he gets stored away in stems mind because stem controlled it. The main character was pointless in a sense because their was no uprising and the movie became a more hostile sci-fy version of ex machina That being said it was a great movie Pros: amazing acting, beautifully innovated fight scenes really different but smooth feel, great quality on low budget, easy to get immersed to the main character he is a master piece, Somewhat of an extremely realistic feel of emotions and acting as a quadriplegic Cons: the semi villains that were paid for a job had many utilities but never used any of these abilities to fight against the main character, cliche beginning but I was able to look past it when it was more focused on a crippled with an evil chip, ending was unsatisfactory because main character becomes trapped with not a single bit of vengeance, movie becomes Ex Machina. Notes: there is a lot of metaphors surrounding the movie which slightly make the movie more genius like submitting control to a higher power, or giving up rights. There our multiple cases of giving in within the movie like giving in to depression by trying to overdose, pass away control to addiction of stem functionality seen in the hacker scene, and finally the collapse of his own brain by the time he decided to fight back it was to late. Being a reviewer would be a dream but I’ll settle whoever takes the time to read this also comment and/or criticize.
What brilliant observations!!! I do wanna add more thoughts & will do later - sleep is more important right now! But wanted to say a few words Re ur interpretation 🖒🖒🖒
I really hope this gets more traction. I saw it premiere day and i was blown away with what I saw. The humor was witty and clever, the fight scenes were gory and unforgiving, the plot twists were unexpected, and an end that will keep you up at night because it hits you so hard man. I loved this movie, and I wish there was a sequel, but I don't think there will.
Murf And Peebs, after watching this movie, I'd say that the action sequences and the innovative way in which they were filmed are the only things that make this worth a watch.
ive basically started watching your reviews instead of trailers; not so much for the opinions alone, though you do have a lot of the same tastes as i do. but also because god damn, you do such a better job than the trailers at not spoiling the whole movie. had i seen the trailers BEFORE seeing upgrade i would not have loved it nearly as much as i did. i absolutely loved it, thank you for the rec & accurate review. i think the only thing the movie 'really' suffers from is the 90 minute deadline, and so they had to prioritize some things, i really enjoyed everything else very very much. it just felt like it ended way too soon (but damn, what a way to go out).
I'm so glad Leigh is getting some recognition, he's a very creative guy and i feel he doesn't get enough credit for what he has contributed to horror so far. Looking forward to see this once it gets released in my country.
I completely agree with your review. Which is rare for me. But, you nailed all of the pluses and minuses of the film compared to what I experienced. I plan on seeing it again, as well. Subbing.
I too watched this blind and I loved it. I wish there was a sequel. It was great. The atmosphere of this movie was so thick you could cut cyperbunk future.
@Gilbert M The ending was predictable? I would concede that the twist might be, but the way it turns it into a double twist with the tragic ending definitely surprised me.
I was surprised when I saw it yesterday. It was awesome! Leigh Whannell really shined as a director and cinematographer in this one. Can't wait to see his career as a film maker continue!
That ending locked some of the confusing moments for me into place. Under-developed characters and all. Logan Marshal-Green really brought it . I dug this film.
Just watched this movie last night and it was brilliant! So so good. I could tell it was low budget as a filmmaker but damn. They made the best of it. Like damn. I agree with Chris!
Yes Chris! Love the invitation as well! I thought the ending was actually not too bad, but I see where you’re coming from. The first two acts are so suspenseful and every minute in that house was just creeping me the hell out. Fantastic movie
My wife and I were eating lunch while watching and had to look away because of how realistic that scene was. The movie was great, especially the ending, and a solid A in my opinion.
Thanks, Chris! I have been looking at the trailer for this one and thinking "This LOOKS good" but trailers have lied to us SO much (especially in the last decade or so) that I was still feeling a bit leery. But you giving it a B has definitely decided me, I will be seeing this one.
Having just seen it, I agree with your review and grading. I enjoyed seeing it, yet still walked away from the theater a bit cold and without too much reflection. Maybe a second viewing would garner more emotion, but I can't really fault the film on production and end results.

This director should make a Bio Shock movie....The atmosphere was amazing and this actor needs to do more stuff.
Even the way he kind of over does his movements like done by a machine, too precise was really convincing.
STEM is the lovechild of HAL and Jigsaw
and Samantha from ‘Her’
I agree with nearly everything you said here Chris.
Just watched the movie, it’s REALLY good. Better than most sci-fi/action films, it’s an A- at least imo
Funny enough people call this alternate Venom movie. Upgrade came out in March 2018 and Venom came out in October 2018...
I love this review! It flows so well from plot synopsis to opinion/review in a transition that feels so natural.
Just saw this after The Invisible Man and loved it. Very excited to see what Leigh has next.
Great review as always Chris 👍 keep em' coming!
Can't wait to see it
your reviews are so well rounded and i love the pros and cons you do of the movies you see
Just to let you know if you ever read this, I was never much into movies, their production, actors, etc. And still to this day, meh not really, but your enthusiasm, and your productions is enough to keep me coming back. You're just entertaining and a easy listen, is all I'm saying. Thanks :D
Is it me or does this movie reminds you of Venom? Both actors look alike and something is taking over their actions.
yeahh
The main character was pointless in a sense because their was no uprising and the movie became a more hostile sci-fy version of ex machina That being said it was a great movie
Pros: amazing acting, beautifully innovated fight scenes really different but smooth feel, great quality on low budget, easy to get immersed to the main character he is a master piece, Somewhat of an extremely realistic feel of emotions and acting as a quadriplegic
Cons: the semi villains that were paid for a job had many utilities but never used any of these abilities to fight against the main character, cliche beginning but I was able to look past it when it was more focused on a crippled with an evil chip, ending was unsatisfactory because main character becomes trapped with not a single bit of vengeance, movie becomes Ex Machina.
I think the fact that he is left without any true vengeance is a nice touch. It makes the ending even darker.
its like a person once told me, the more money you have the less creative you have to be.
I was sad to find out this wasn't a sequel to Idiocracy focusing on Upgrayedd.
Pimp Master Broda “with two d’s for a double dose of pimpin!”
Free Upgrayedd!
Pimp Master Broda 😂😂😂
I personally was bummed out by the ending, but had a blast with the rest of the film. I say B+
Check out ‘repo men’
Upgrade? It's a windows 10 horror movie?
Hahaha, Love it.
you did good
they using Linux
I appreciate these reviews of movies i have not heard of the most - keep em coming!
Videos of yours haven't been showing up on my feed but I'm glad I found this one
Oh Hi Chris. Did you watch Solo: a masturbation story ?
Are you getting Chris mixed up with Cinema Snob?
Arghya Sen lol
I love the fight scenes in this movie, they are so good and more movies should look at how these are done. Also the ending is wonderful!
Listening to you talking about movies is always a pleasure.
Chris please review Thoroughbreds!!!
The action sequences look awesome. Thanks Chris for this review. Will definitely check this one out.
You are my go to for reviews man!! Keep doing great work!
You should do Cargo review...it's a Netflix movies starring Martin Freeman....kinda interesting
IT’S A NETFLIX MOVIES
McCreep Flurrie I’ve also seen a short film similar to it.
Its good, i liked it
JS Pena the movie is inspired in that short film.
It’s certified fresh on rotten tomatoes and rightfully so
I loved Upgrade and I also loved The Invitation. How is the ending "eh"?, it's awesome. Super epic.
Subbing.
Chris grew up with upgrades
😂😂
Lel
I can't believe that this movie was made on a 5 Million dollar budget.
Really good movie it was
I too watched this blind and I loved it. I wish there was a sequel. It was great. The atmosphere of this movie was so thick you could cut cyperbunk future.
The trailer blew me away. I cannot wait to watch this!
Thanks for the spoiler free review, made me even more excited.
I loved this movie too, Chris! Glad it's picking up some buzz.
Definitely deserved at least a B could not understand the unreasonable grading?
@Gilbert M The ending was predictable? I would concede that the twist might be, but the way it turns it into a double twist with the tragic ending definitely surprised me.
I was surprised when I saw it yesterday. It was awesome! Leigh Whannell really shined as a director and cinematographer in this one. Can't wait to see his career as a film maker continue!
Long time lurker here, but I have to comment to let you know your reviews are hella great & very helpful! Keep up the good stuff & thank you!
That ending locked some of the confusing moments for me into place. Under-developed characters and all. Logan Marshal-Green really brought it . I dug this film.
This movie got me off guard , incredibly delightful, especially the ending.
10/10 action scenes
10/10 premise
8/10 cinematography
8/10 ending
How isn’t that an A?
I was literally about to see this but I was waiting on your review first. You rated it better then what I thought so I’m happy
Best cyberpunk film.
Does anyone how Stuckmann's thumbnails are mainly showing him smiling? Probably because he wants to not spoil his thoughts on it before the vid starts
Yoo you need to review a history of violence,it's a great crime thriller.
That film was insane
I think he covers the movie in his first book
Lee H. Not in my opinion.
classic👌
Permission granted.
does anyone know the method in which the camera moved/was edited to fit the fast-paced, close quarter fight scenes?
So glad to hear about podcast definitely pumped to see what it's about
Review The Silence of The Lambs.
Scalpel cutting skin warning!!
indobleh
Is that a thing?
I find it oddly satisfying
I loved that part
@@mrloverman2.0 When they showed that I thought the should make a surgeon show for HBO just for shit like that.
My wife and I were eating lunch while watching and had to look away because of how realistic that scene was. The movie was great, especially the ending, and a solid A in my opinion.
why is this a thing, have we become such wimps?
Yo stuckmann my guy, good video, I’ve been watching for a while now and I’m never bored, keep up the good content 👍👍
Thanks, Chris! I have been looking at the trailer for this one and thinking "This LOOKS good" but trailers have lied to us SO much (especially in the last decade or so) that I was still feeling a bit leery. But you giving it a B has definitely decided me, I will be seeing this one.
So that’s it huh? We’re some kind of upgrade...
R_J fuck off with that dead meme
R_J No....
Don't sit down cos I've moved your chair
Aurodeep Kamal It's not even that, it's just not funny or clever at all. Dissapointed in everyone that liked that comment.
Andrey Ivashin You just destroyed my career as a CZcams commenter
loved it, it was like if Black Mirror made an episode of Venom
Having just seen it, I agree with your review and grading. I enjoyed seeing it, yet still walked away from the theater a bit cold and without too much reflection. Maybe a second viewing would garner more emotion, but I can't really fault the film on production and end results.
Nev a big fan of channel till now. I shall include u in my pre movie review sequence moving forward. Great review sir!
