      yeah you got that right she was a good choice for Lara Croft especially when she is sexy and gorgeous and she is really good to look at and she attractive women too and that why i love those original Tomb Raider movies way better than the reboot especially i grew up with the original movies i was 6 years old when the first one came out and 8 years old when the second one came out and i love those movies tomb raider 2018 not a bad tomb raider but nothing can't beat Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft as Tomb Raider from 2001 and 2003

    I loved Lara's development during the movie. And I loved that there was no "love" story in it either. She was her own character and she was going through her own story. I was pleasantly surprised by the movie even though I didn't play the video games.
    It isn't afraid of showing a strong female character doing her own thing and following her own path which I enjoyed greatly.
    Great review!

      @fangsabre Před 6 lety +18

      As someone who's played the games, that wasn't a huge surprise to me, cuz that's kinda always been Laura's character. I don't think there's ever been a love interest for her in any games now that I think about it. In the old ones she would sarcastically flirt on occasion (cuz ya she was kindof a sex symbol in those games so that was part of her character) but in the reboot she gives significantly less of a fuck about that kind of thing. Which is cool.

    • @jonathanphan4864
      @jonathanphan4864 Před 6 lety +1

      Honestly, while she didn't have a love interest, I do feel as though she wasn't exactly independent either. Her motivations and the like were all driven by the want to please her father, some of her actions are controlled by Matthias, and she has to be saved multiple times by other people. Video game Lara, even in the first game, was extremely capable in all situations, and while she did have to be saved at times, overall, we knew that she had to go through a lot and she had to survive a lot of ordeals to get where she was. In this one, she can shoot a bow and arrow a couple times, the pacing has her go from her normal everyday life biking to Yamatai, and how quickly everything with the tomb and her father, etc. it feels rushed, and it doesn't really give Lara as a character time to breathe. She really didn't have much character development, in my opinion, it felt superficial like she threw on a leather jacket and suddenly became Angelina Jolie. What I wish they would've done is shown more instances and/or fights where she truly outsmarted them, and if they make a second one, I truly hope they go the way of Rise of the Tomb Raider, where she does everything with her father in mind, but really, she's doing it for herself. It's fine to have external motivations, like for Lara, it's her father, but her entire drive and life and passion should not be directed and existent only because of her father. And also, there's really nothing wrong with receiving help, but in this film, it felt as though every time she won, it was an easy fight, and the fights she couldn't win, she needed help with. In the game, it's LARA that defeats an army of Oni, it's LARA that shoots down Matthias with her dual pistols, and it's LARA that saves Sam. In this, she never would've escaped without Lu and her father. In the first game and Rise, we know as a player that Lara can handle any situation on her own, the help is merely appreciated, especially in Rise's opening when she single-handedly survives an avalanche, fights off a bear, and scavenges for food. And even in the first game, she's resourceful, makes it out of that den all by herself, climbs the radio tower, etc., these amazing feats that she accomplishes are what truly cement her as an icon. There just wasn't enough of that in this film for me. That's the Lara I'd love to see.

      Yeah, the first Silent Hill movie was, IMO, the first decent video game adaptation film. Not groundbreaking or anything, but it was quite faithful to the spirit of the game, with the ones behind the film even playing the games as they were making the film so they could get atmosphere, camera angles, creature appearances and movements, etc. like the game.
      If the series hadn't been all but canned (again), I remember them saying that they were even planning on including the film-original Janitor monster in a future Silent Hill game.

    I honestly felt like this movie has been getting more criticism than it deserves. Glad to see someone giving it a more positive review. I had a lot of fun with the movie and I actually enjoyed the 3rd act reveal quite a bit. Chris is right as the movie was able to balance the exposition with the action sequences fairly well and never got too bogged down with too much dialogue while explaining just enough to give the 3rd act reveal some perspective. I also felt that the chemistry between Lara Croft and her father was fairly well realized despite the lack of screen time the characters shared, that's probably a testament to Alicia Vikander and Dominic West as actors.

      Movie felt Hollow to me compared to the game it was based on which I have beaten multiple times. No Roth, Sam, Jonah or the rest of the crew of the Intrepid and the Asian characters they added just felt tacked on for China Pandering instead of meaningful additions to the story. I'm saying this as a HUGE Tomb Raider fan.

He went to a screening where he met Steven Spielberg...and THAT can REALLY have an effect on your objective perception and overall opinion. Hell, I know it would me. Not hating on AJ just being realistic.

      I don't know, in terms of it paying homage to a ton of mediums (in the marketing campaigns and in the cameos such as the JP T-rex, Iron Giant, and OW Tracer), I think that it is trying way too hard. Homage/Pastiche is great but if its core(plot) isn't that great then that's a minus.
      I hope that Ready Player One has a good story, that it is not just a collection of Nostalgia put into film

    Loved the movie and felt Alicia did a really great job. You see her develop enough through the movie to make her physicality fairly believable. Also every time she was hurt she sold it really well with some really emotional performances that surprised me. It was fun, the final tomb reveal was cool and unexpected, as were the puzzles, and the scenes lifted from the games made me feel like I was replaying them real time. Loved the grimy, gritty translation, and loved the nostalgic feel that harkened to some of my favorite adventure movies like the Indiana Jones series. Definitely one for the theatre and will definitely see it again. I give the film a B+ overall, but Alicia was a A. I feel like she more than did the role justice. Notice I didn’t say anything about boobs, either ;)

They actually care about building a cohesive film with an interesting protagonist rather than just following a checklist of the stuff that you see in the game. The Angelina Jolie movies had supernatural elements in them, but they decided to scrap them in this movie. What's interesting is that they played with the audience's expectations at first, making you think that there would be supernatural elements, only to reveal that it was all based in mythology.
      Honestly, I'm not sure why the game developers decided to add supernatural elements to the newer games. They don't quite jibe with new Lara's slice-of-life depiction. They did, however, fit in the previous games, since those were fantastical, larger-than-life adventures. In that regard, the newer games remind me of _10 Cloverfield Lane,_ which was an excellent suspense-thriller that was mostly grounded in reality, but only offset by the shoehorned "alien scene" toward the very end of the film.

  • @ZoniesCoasters
    @ZoniesCoasters Před 6 lety +212

    What is the point of a video game movie if it's the story you already played?
    The difference between book/comic to film and video game to film
    A book/comic/play to a movie has something to add like better visuals and other things
    A game to a movie takes away a lot more than it adds. It inherently has less immersion and interactivity that's the point of a game. And taking a games story and putting that to film just takes away all that.
    Another idea
    When making a movie basses off a game it shouldn't just be the same story. So a lot of games that are smaller scale plot wise are not good for a movie. But something like halo with its large scale story and many many things in the lore that can be followed and put to a movie would be great.

    • @stankostankochunt5837

      Zonies Coasters Precisely. Video Game adaptation should only be made if a director has a good idea for a story that occurs inbetween the events of the Games, so it adds to the whole experience. A retelling is redundant on arrival essentially, except for people who don't play Games. If you enjoy watching a more barebones version of a story you've already experienced in detail, good for you, but it's not for me tbh and I feel most others fans of the Games would share this opinion.

      Because most of the people who pay for movie tickets have never played the Tomb Raider games. They’re not nearly as popular as they once were. So they make the movie to appeal as much to movie audiences as they can without alienating the fans of the game, but the game fans aren’t really the priority. I say this as a fan of games myself. If they were to make a Fallout movie, my favorite game series of all time, I would understand going in they would change or not change whatever they would feel was necessary to appeal to the movie going audiences. Maybe I wouldn’t like the changes, but I’d also know the movie wasn’t made for me, but for the millions of people who don’t play the games.

      Silent Hill, in my opinion, is the best video game adaptation ever made. It managed to be its own thing while maintaining the disturbing and horrific shit the games were known for. And the fact that the mythology of the games already allowed room for creativity with each installment gave it a huge advantage. Then again I haven't seen it in awhile so this is all just according to how I remember it.

    I recently saw this at a dollar theater last week. And for me, it's definitely a serviceable 3 out of 5 star video game movie.
    I loved Alicia Vikander's performance as Lara, the action scenes were really cool, and (like you said) it feels like it was actually trying to adapt the video game more faithfully than most video game movies.
    But about your complaint about physics, the movie has a complete tonal shift about 35 minutes in. The first 35 minutes were somewhat realistic, but as soon as she gets to the island, that's when the movie officially becomes a video game movie, because physics really gets thrown right out the window.
    Also, I hated that there were a bunch of sequences shot in the dark and too much of that fast-cut editing for the action scenes.
    But like I said, it thought it was serviceable and entertaining.

    Since I haven't played any of the video games, I'm not too familiar with how closely this followed the reboot game so that could be why I though this movie was just ok. I thought it was a fun action/adventure movie but hearing you explain how close they made this movie to the game, I think that adds to it for sure.

    I just saw this movie and I thought the scenes where she does stunts. I was waiting for the QTE buttons to come up press correctly to not die horribly. The Tomb Raider made me think of Indiana Jones... or Nathan Drake when you did puzzles and used clues to hint and solve them. Also the end credit scene. She gets those pistols from a pawn shop. I always just thought those were her guns I did not know where or when she got them just that she gets them at a pawn shop.

    I hear Ready player was good. It might be the first video game movie that is great. I definitely thought Tomb Raider could be the first

    I think, that the best video game movie, is Edge of Tomorrow. Even though it’s not based on an actual game, it gets the idea of “get killed, respawn , try again,” and runs with it, in a very enjoyable way.
