- A video game to movie adaptation that seems to be taking its self seriously. Does it break the mold? Here's my review of TOMB RAIDER!

This is a video game movie, so I'll accept that rating as fantastic news.
Broncoley Go Right?
Same here. And its quite sad when "okay" is fantastic news xD
Finally. A video game movie that's actually... good enough.
The bar is so low in these movies.
Kinda like having a beer while playing Halo.
Kind of funny that the lead actress is married to Michael Fassbender from Assassin's Creed
I'd waste my money on that cross over
Glad to hear it's....at least better than Assassins Creed
Daniel Williams Which, ironically, stars Alicia Vikander’s husband Michael Fassbended
Oh its better than that terrible movie greaaaaaaaat!!!
Daniel Williams hi brother
Daniel Williams
That's like saying you're taller than Garry Coleman.
Daniel Williams Assassins creed was good.
So basically Hollywood is stepping in the right direction for video game movies. A few more films and we may have the best video game film adaptation ever made.
Can't believe the tomb raider is married to the assassin's creed
George can't believe it either
Assassin Raider
No she’s married to Magneto 😛
Calum Lynch
Daniel Findura are they really married??? What?
The recent games are actually fucking fantastic
farman siddiqui I haven't played Rise of the Tomb Raider yet but the first one was awesome
Rise of the tomb raider was even better, here's to hoping they announce a new TR at E3
The story is nowhere near Uncharted levels but the gameplay is pretty fun
Ceeryle Brown they actually announced a new one
Scattman101 I liked the story for the 2013 one
The plane set piece is from the 2013 game
Marlin Johnson yup
The whole movie is a shot for shot remake of the 2013 reboot.
Mr. Manager minus some characters missing. Sam Reyes Roth etc
Marlin Johnson really? how'd they push the plot without Sam?
Marlin Johnson yup and a bad ass game as well.
Jeremy Jahns
As an adaptation of the video game, this was pretty faithful. I don't hate it, just like I enjoyed the flicks with Angelina Jolie. My thing is...I want to see an action flick that has real-world physics for a change. Most people on this planet can't jump 20' chasms and survive the damage that Lara took in this film.
I just wish film-makers would bring some realism back into cinema. I guess I'm just nostalgic for some old-school action movies.
Glad to hear it wasn't forgotten in t-minus one day or dogsh*t! I really like Alicia Vikander
still drunk still sucks its like 2 out of 5 stars or 4/10
kyotheman69 now, when you say sucks, is it like how the last three transformers movies suck or how 50 shades of dogsh*t sucks?
what do you like about her? all she's been in that is note worthy is Ex Machina
You don’t have to like a shitty movie to like Vikander’s assets.
Kyo
You should watch the video where Jeremy explains his rating system.
Someday they will make an excellent live-action adaptation film of a videogame. That game will be Megaman, and it will be released in the year 20XX
Fingers crossed in that Mario reboot (even if it is coming form the Minions guys).
Jeff If the movie can make them a few million bucks at the box office, I don't think Nintendo nor "the Minions guys" will care about its quality.
Nah the game is Mortal Kombat and the year is actually 1995
Speed Flash Watch Tekken, that's actually great for what it is. They took out all of the supernatural stuff in favor of just focusing on making a martial arts movie.
Speed Flash I’ve been thinking of this it would be hilarious if the first great video game movie was the Call of Duty movie
My favorite Video Game movie is Prince of Persia, because I thought it was Okay.
The way they did the Tomb Raider film...I can imagine whenever Uncharted Movie comes out it would go exactly like this film
Sadly they didn’t
Lol
She can definitely raid my tomb
fordis2 Womb Raider
😂
fordis2 Though this joke is not original
LILCHEESE99 why being an ass, let's just enjoy the joke...
Yeah... But i'm 100% sure she wouldn't want to.
Loved the movie and felt Alicia did a really great job. You see her develop enough through the movie to make her physicality fairly believable. Also every time she was hurt she sold it really well with some really emotional performances that surprised me. It was fun, the final tomb reveal was cool and unexpected, as were the puzzles, and the scenes lifted from the games made me feel like I was replaying them real time. Loved the grimy, gritty translation, and loved the nostalgic feel that harkened to some of my favorite adventure movies like the Indiana Jones series. Definitely one for the theatre and will definitely see it again. I give the film a B+ overall, but Alicia was a A. I feel like she more than did the role justice. Notice I didn’t say anything about boobs, either ;)
Actually, I really liked the movie and thought it was very cool. I want to watch it again.
The wife does it better than the husband. Nice
I see what you're referring to...
Not the husband fault to be honest.
tomstonemale ya
Abhilash BM so Vikander is married to Fasbender?
Leonardo Braynen yes. Hence the comparison
Tomb Raider was actually really good ! The first video game to movie adaptation I was so invested in ! Lara is a GREAT character ! So likable, and the way Alicia played her action scenes was gorgeous ! I was emotionally invested throughout. Only complaints I have is the end where they explain something that was obvious, and a moment that was such an obvious plothole that it took me out of it. Apart from that, I definitely recommend it. With this lift the curse ?
"That's legit an uncharted 2 moment"...
Or you know... A tomb raider Reboot moment? :D
love ya pal.
Lucas Sarquiz No.Uncharted 2 is more exciting and has cooler setpieces
+Da Bossman dude. the movie has scenes replicating the same setpieces as the tomb raider reboot game. that was my comment. basically.
Lucas Sarquiz oh cool
Let's be real though, the reboot went in that direction because of the success of Uncharted lol.
Though i do see your point, i'm wondering if Jeremy hasn't actually played the reboot cos the comparison would make sense if he hadn't.
+IIIIMavIIII 100% behind you on this one
It was quite good to me :) maybe it’s just the nostalgia playing up here but I liked it. Still love Angelina though 💜
Jeremy really loves that song by Destiny's Child
Hahaha 😂 I wanna hear him sing it again!
Baby steps
I have played the newer games and they are a lot of fun imo.
Just got the 2013 game yesterday and started playing today, and I love it. Like it's been a while since I got a game that I played for hours, stopped to play something else, and almost immediately wanted to play more of. I wanted to see if I should get the new one and having really enjoyed the first one so far I'm gonna pick up the other two for sure.
Alicia Vikander was a fan of the video game series growing up.
Alicia Vikander put on a lot of muscle to play Lara, as she wanted the character to be as realistic as possible and also did some of her own stunts.
Currently the highest rated video game adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes.
I actually have no idea what Jeremy was talking about in his criticisms of the movie. At no point I felt that the movie was introducing a plot point which was breaking my suspension of disbelief. In fact, the movie kept pretty much all of it very grounded in traditional adventure movie territory and avoided breaking suspension of disbelief a bit too much for a Tomb Raider movie.
As far as "we all collectively agree that some things are not real", apparently Jeremy has never had contact with people who believe in UFO's, aliens and all sorts of other fictional shit. Given that the vast majority of characters actively deny the supernatural in this movie, having one weirdo who thinks it's all real is not strange at all.
magnuskno yeah, I'm trying really hard to figure out exactly what plot point he's talking about, no luck.
probably the point where they reveal that her dad has been alive for seven years, surviving off of nothing and going unnoticed. was a pretty dumb twist if you ask me...
and to your other point, he didnt say its stupid that he believes it. he said its stupid that he seems to believe it with conviction which was never explained
From what I'm hearing and reading, it definitely takes liberties to "rationalize" the first game, which has my curiosity to how it actually presents it. But as long as it's not as wacky as the AC adaptation and does well to "translate" the game to big screen- I might as well see it.
But bums me out we don't get campier Himiko, that dopenss that is Sam and that relationship, and of course the Storm Guard- but at least they kept the elements behind those in cause they even saw their importance.
I feel video games should work better as tv shows instead of movies. Games like Resident Evil, Assassin’s Creed etc. could work more as long running shows since you flush out the lore and characters a lot better.
Nosfonader87 They are making a resident evil tv show
Anime shows based on games have already proven it:)
They're making an Assassin's Creed anime. 😆
Really enjoyed it. Hopefully getting a sequel.
Fantastic Beasts 2 trailer reaction please. It looks interesting
It's sad when porn parodies of video game films are better than the actual films.
Rodney McKay To be fair porn is better than most films.
Tell that to the cinema snob.
you watch porn parodies of video games? Kink really took a new level.
FACTS!!!!!!!!!!
Im a huge fan of of Tomb Raider: Secrets of the Crystal Cock
I've played both rebooted games and LOVED them (TRIED to play the originals, but I'm not a good shot or a puzzle person) and as far as adaptations go, I felt this one was great. Many action sequences were taken straight from the games. I thought it was fun for what it is...Adaptation of a reboot of a video game. :)
I pretty much agree with your review. What I liked most about this movie was Lara and some of the chlichee plot points that didn't happen which made this refreshing.
"The plane scene was straight up Uncharted 2 stuff" Or the 2013 reboot. Literally the same exact set piece and series of events
Probably going to skip this one. After Assassin's Creed, I feel like video games movies shouldn't be a thing anymore. When I heard about this one, I thought, "Hey, they're doing the story from the really good reboot game. That might work." Which was immediately followed up by, "Hey, wait a minute! If I want to relive that story, why don't I just play the game again?"
There are some changes in the story. It's not the same.
Lara Croft is a great iconic character yet a surprising amount of people don't know anything about her because they won't play the games. My friend didn't even know she existed until this movie was announced.
I think animated video game movies still have potential.
What about Rampage
Gotham's Knight, Rampage looks like its taking itself WAYYYY too seriously. Also, they didn't even get the story right. Seriously, it's supposed to be 3 people mutated into giant animals, not 3 animals supersized. I'm not even THAT big of a Rampage fan but come on. How do you fuck that up?
Thanks for your honesty
From the trailer, and now also from this review, seems like it's the exact plot from the first reboot game, which I'm pretty exited for since it's my favorite single player campaign
Just got an ad for Tomb Raider right before the video
last time i was this early i still had hopes in my life
Jeremy!!! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SO MUCH!!!
Going on Friday, plan to enjoy the ride!
As excited as I am to see this movie, I'm honestly surprised you gave it an ok score lol. A good surprise, but a surprise nonetheless
I thought this was well-made movie overall. The casting was enjoyable, it had fun action, and it felt closely inspired by the new games. There was an important change to the Himiko story, but I thought it worked for the movie. It does combine elements from "Rise of the Tomb Raider" in an interesting manner. This is definitely one of the better video game-based movies at this time. I just think it's stupid that the majority of focus from some viewers went to complaining about breast size! Alicia Vikander was awesome!

At the end of the movie, it is revealed that "The Order of Trinity" is based in Sweden. Director Roar Uthaug is Norwegian, and Alicia Vikander is Swedish.
Honestly she looks nothing like lara croft..she couldn't give the connection that i got from the video game series..
The only actress born to play this role is megan fox...she look exactly the same in video game character and its kinda scary how similar she is...
I played the 2013 reboot and it's fantastic. I love me some gritty, mature action adventure with some wicked archeology.
I'm really looking forward to this movie. I just now know to go in not expecting the equal to Batman Begins or Casino Royale for the Tomb Raider franchise, but rather something more generic.
Hmm, but where is your Ready Player One review?
John Banda the movie isn't even out yet dude lol
Sully The Man Well people like IGN and Variety have already reviewed it so that must be why he’s asking.
They were able to review it because they got to see it a month before it's released
Obvious answer It's not Ready.
Still got like 2 more weeks bud...
I guess I'm getting wasted tomorrow then.
As a huge fan of the rebooted games, everything you're saying about this movie is making me very excited. I think I know what the plot twist is, it's probably from the games and none of the crazy mythology twists in the games bothered me so I think I'll enjoy this movie. Can't wait to finally see it!
Big fan of your movie and video game reviews. It's been a long time since a video game movie adaptation has got some positive word of mouth. Keep up the good work, Jeremy. =)
(Fingers crossed for the upcoming uncharted movie.)
Not gonna lie i actually really liked it.
Better rating than I thought it would get.
Just rewatched it, still love it!
They are opening a 4DX room at my local cinema now with the premier of Tomb Raider.I don't know if I should see it like that or just regular, probably gonna wait for another one.
The recent games are more movies than videogames anyway so movies based on games get better.
Dont you just love when a movie you thought might be good get reviewed by Jeremy and the thumbnail is Jeremy smiling
But... He *isn't* smiling in the thumbnail, though...
He smiled for The Strangers...with two thumbs up. The sick fuck.
Yeah sometimes it's a psychotic smile because of how insane the movie made him.
I got a Tomb Raider trailer before the video started with that song. It's stuck in my head now.
Congrats on reaching 1.4 million subscribers Jeremy.
I just realized that you hardly blink
@bob bob that's what he wants you to believe
I WANT DINO CRISIS MADE INTO A MOVIE!
Id totally watch that shit!!
it's called jurassic park
id prefer killing dinosaurs instead of running away from them it may sound harsh but its dino crisis
Nero Blitz. Show them who the real hunters are, right.
Great review jeremy thanks, I love alicia vikander and I've been really wanting to see this but I hate paying the ridiculous prices at the movies especially when I don't enjoy the movie but il defenitley pay to go and see this
Grace randoph uploaded the video I started watching it ...jermey video notification popped up ...saved me a lotta time
So... Mortal Kombat still the best.
Kal-El fan 49 MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!!
What abouth Silent Hill?
Nah man, Street Fighter the Animated movie is best video game movie to date.
Castlevania on Netflix is kinda spot on with Castlevania 3 though.
It will never not be
I just saw it today, I really liked it. That's all I have to say.
The 2013 game that its based off of is my 2nd favorite video game ever, 2nd only to its 2015 sequel. The new games are freaking amazing, so its nice to see a well done movie adaptation. And Alicia Vikander is freaking terrific in this movie, she deserves some real props for that.
Alicia Vikander was a fan of the video game series growing up.
Alicia Vikander put on a lot of muscle to play Lara, as she wanted the character to be as realistic as possible and also did some of her own stunts.
best video game movie so far
we're getting there guys!!!
Tomb Rider 2018 is they're first step great job Hollywood but cant we stop Manga/Anime Adaption please
Lol idk what movie you watched but this is far from good
Tony Lawliet I would say its a step foward. Every videogame movie adaptation gets better, but 1 step at a time, one day we will be rewarded, one day.
Carlos Guzman Hopefully Blizzard stops dicking us around and makes a full length Overwatch film.
Tony Lawliet Yeah I hope too, I think that could be a really nice movie and the first big step towards videogame movies. But one part of me is very doubtful that this movie will be made. The next one on the list is The Last of Us, that movie can do a diference.
I've played both reboot games and from the looks of this film I'm interested in seeing it....... And I might get drunk for it lol
lexdadon27 It's type of movie that you should enjoy if you liked the games.
having just come from a screening: i really enjoyed it but i do know what you mean about the pacing once they get to the island. i have other things i want to add/questions about what you mentioned in your review, but i don't want to spoil anyone who might be watching so i'll save them for twitter/when the movie comes out.
also, i don't know if you'd be interested in reviewing the angelina jolie movies but i'd be interested in watching those reviews.
never played the older ones, but the reboot games have been spectacular
This movie was actually great and I enjoyed it
IGN - "Too many polygons - 5.5/10"
You know what Jeremy mate you seem like the kind of guy me and my friends would have a right laugh with over a few drinks. If i ever see you at a convention I'll buy you a beer.
I really enjoyed it a lot. I would give it an "good time, no alcohol required." Loved some of the nods to video game play without it being a straight up "look this is a video game moment." I'm so curious what the moment was that took you out.
Still waiting for him to watch the room
He’ll cry 😢 There were so many guys crying in the movie theater when I watched it.
Is Walton Goggins good?
William Donovan he's always good
Does the Pope shit in the woods?
Does a bear wear a funny hat?
I liked it. I saw it yesterday, it captures the vibe of the new Tomb Raider games. It has some flaws but IMO it's a pretty good video game adaptation, and it's entertaining; I would say it's not the best but I can't remember if it has been made a good one recently.
I’m liking this CZcams Dark setting
Everyone knew this would be bad so no surprise.
It's not bad. Didn't you even watch the review?
"That was straight up some Uncharted 2 stuff" - Or, you know, straight up some Tomb Raider 2013 stuff...
I heard that... and I wondered if Jeremy had played the rebooted Tomb Raider games...
qwerty asdf Naa.They weren’t as epic
Stuckmann put up his punisher review. Curious to hear your thoughts if u plan on making a review.
I love the new "Tomb Raider" games, the first of the reboot series has to be one of my favorite games of 2013. The trailers for this movie seemed promising enough, not to mention Alicia Vikander seemed to be owning the role. Glad to hear that this movie isn't terrible, I mean doesn't sound great, but at least it sounds decent enough. I do kinda wish this movie had an R rating, considering that the newer games are more mature and even gory. Maybe there'll be an unrated cut of this movie when it releases on DVD/Blu-Ray. Good review.

Jeremy Joj review.... wiew.
I miss his funny one line jokes after the If You’re Drunk rating
Yup saw it thursday night, I think I was expecting this to be REALLY good so I was more critical of it then I would usually be. A lot of flaws in it that took me out of the movie but overall it's wasn't THAT bad. Good thing is, I'm now going to tapper my expectations for battle angel aelita and just enjoy the movie like I did with ghost in the shell
Jeremy the airplane sequence is actually closer to TB reboot (first game) than Uncharted. Grated TB reboots are inspired by U.
Yeah it was an ok movie so I’m happy
awwesome
"isn't treating us like a video game movie"
*movie literally copies 2013 tomb raider videogame
You should review The Punisher on Netflix and The Spirit 2008 sometime this year
Saw it very recently. Agree with the points you made but still my favorite movie of all time. Very well done for a reboot movie. :)
Love how I always skip to the end and take your word for it. You the man!
Haaris Talks A Lot its great to listen to reviewers opinion's, but u can still have 1 for yourself
ANDROID TWINE3 yeah you should never take someone’s opinion as fact
Haaris Talks A Lot listen to these guys they're right there's not a reviewer in the world that it's always 100% correct that would be called perfect a perfect person don't exist lol but to Jeremy's credit hes right most of the time on his reviews
Haaris Talks A Lot he's usually right. No harm done
elevatedmind for example I disagree with his last jedi review I hated that movie it's a spit in the face to star wars fans and also suicide squad wasn't a great movie it was mediocre at best theres a couple more I don't agree with but for the most part hes accurate
I still really want a live action adaptation of Dead Space. John Carpenter expressed an interest in directing a Dead Space movie. I think that the first Dead Space game has a simple enough plot and lore to it that it can be pulled off as a really good science fiction horror.
Concerned Citizen been wanting this a long time too. It almost happened but then dead space 3 was a big let down for the fans and then the studios backed out. Last i heard, Justin lin was either attached to produce or direct. Which is probably better it didn't happen then. I've always wondered what would be better, a prequel about the ishumura or just start it off with issac clarke?
They had the animated prequel movie which was pretty good. I would prefer a high budget horror adaptation of the first one following Isaac Clarke. I think that it was more horrific to encounter the aftermath of the Ishimura than the events leading up to the demise. I really like the atmosphere and how Isaac discovers through audio logs and video logs what happened to make everything go so wrong.
Concerned Citizen yeah that would also be awesome. The first one was amazing! My favorite is the second one but there is nothing like the first. Having no idea what's going on while running from mutilated bodies wanting to cut you to pieces. Definitely a mix of the thing and event horizon.
I think I love the first and the second games the most. The first one I feel like would be cool because I would like to see a modern science fiction horror with similarities to John Carpenters The Thing. I did like how the second one implemented action and story in a way that complemented each other without losing to much of the horror. I also enjoyed how the second one showed the trauma of the events of the first one and how Isaac felt responsible for Nichole.
Nice review Jeremy.
Haven't seen it I am still interested though
I am only a very casual player of the newer Tomb Raider games. I thought this was a fun, entertaining, slightly mindless movie. Yeah batteries do not last that long, at least that is what Apple geniuses keep telling me. Tomb Raider had problems, but I think that its biggest problem was being not being clearly identified as a prequel in the advertising. Not the best video game movie (becoming an oxymoron), but seemed better than Assassin's Creed. Would love to listen to discussion regarding being a lead in action/video game movies between Michael and Alicia over lattes I disagree with Jeremy, no alcohol is required only copious amounts of gummy concession candy, a tub of popcorn and a huge bottle of water (because one should ALWAYS eat healthy at theaters)😳.
Jeremy, do you still watch The Walking Dead?
I stop watching it after the terrible mid-season premiere, i'm not sure if i'll continue
Evan it's picking back up
Stopped at Glenn's death and haven't even considered watching since.
The latest episode was nearly shit. Previous episode was when Negan didn't wanna kill everyone as they are resource. But apparently, in the latest episode, he wants to kill them all suddenly. It's as if all writers didn't have a general assembly. Plus, Tara's annoying, believing Dwight could not be that serious in easily changing sides (Ironically, thats what she did during Guvn'a era). But I only said nearly shit because the only thing interesting recently is Father Gabriel's storyline.
The Walking Dev The show is shit now they ruined everything by killing off Carl. Lauren Cohan is most likely not coming back next season as well cause AMC does not want to give her a contract raise. The Negan shit with wanting to kill everybody now is not the writer's fault sadly that was from the comics and was Kirkman's doing.
I agree. I hope nobody gets us wrong though. We are/were fans but that doesn't mean we have to stick by every decision they make. People will say just stop watching, but we've already invested too much in it to stop. We're all just sick and tired of the characters becoming idiots. Like, Rosita's "whatever" face when she gets scolded off or Tara's "we have to stick together" lessons.
Went to an advanced screening with my roommate cause I photographed a Lara Croft cosplay. Before the movie, we went to a Japanese BBQ and drank a lot of sake, and that helped me enjoy the film
Hey as long as it didnt get a 💩 sounds like a success to me lol still on the fence but on a 1/2 off day at the movies i might check it out
They should have gotten the girl who voices Lara in the new games to play in this movie
Angelina Jolie will always be my Tomb Raider.
what happened to drunk Jeremy's 1 liners after the raring? loved those :(
I can appreciate that it feels slow at times. Video game movies usually bombard you with set piece after set piece. But as with Assassins Creed and this one, even if it doesn't succeed, it shows me that they're willing to slow down and try to tell a story, if not always successful.
