Nice one, Justin. Thanks for a great video. Great, in that you were teaching an almost never discussed truth to the newest ones in our hobby that in RC, almost anything is repairable. My days go back to balsa wood and Monokote, and I've fixed many broken balsa/plywood RC airplanes. Part of what pulled me into FPV was that folks were actually building things again; most FPV pilots will ultimately build a quad, I think. Anyway, thanks again. Gotta make it up to Portland this summer and rip a few packs with you at that absolutely awesome field.
Lost three eflites in a month at our field, heard a lot of “pilot error” from the spektrum loving old timers. In the last 4 months HH planes have been dropping like flies. All around the same spot near an aerial. It’s apparent there’s a freq that wasn’t there before on that tower. I don’t like leaving planes in trees, so I dusted off my Taranis, ripped out all the spektrum rx’s and I’m doing circles around that tower now, while all the spektrum guys are literally flying only one half the field. Glad though, getting back on the Taranis has gotten me back into fpv
I had the same problems with spektrum…especially the BNF planes with AS3X receivers. I hate those things. They can get confused quickly if you start ripping a lot of rolls and 3D flying.

Thanks Clay. This flies great if setup right ;) stall at almost no throttle. Likes 15% and above. Great slow flier.

Just wondering: the prop direction.. Was there a reason you chose to turn them out at the top, instead of in? In provides the best characteristics for single engine operation. but there may be other factors.

Love to see other “drone guys” who started as RC guys go back to our roots. I, myself am about to get a nice plane. But now where to fly it? Oh yeah.. if I’m not flying my Phantom or Mavic, then no one cares. I can actually fly at a park without any problems.
I’m a Futaba Guy, but just invested in a RadioMaster TX16S with Walksnail Digital FPV goggles w/ Headtracker and I’m totally overwhelmed.
That’s why you need a FC!!! Failsafe just means either up and circle or return to home and land man!!!!

Instructions are lacking. How do you mount the power supply board ? Looks like you just have it floating in there.
Just curious if anyone has used the DJI FPV TX as well as the FPV 2 goggles with the Air Unit hooked up to a FC on this ? I have successfully used the Air Unit with the DJI FPV goggles on my Traxxas X_Maxx of all things. And can easily switch between Air Unit or FPV.
What size of fpv camera fits in the round hole in the nose of the airplane? I’d like to put a DJI Air unit with a hd digital fpv camera there. But should the camera be mini, micro or nano size?

Jus realized I was subscribed to this channel and how good quality video it makes, even in a 2 year old video and I was wondering if it is simple to put all the mods linked in description to the plane or if you could give a short direction. Also I realized that this channel is just about planes and drones but would be nice if you made a video on how to long range fpv and rc car such as a Traxxas slash, there are many people searching but this is the one of the only channels for now that give such clear directions. I switched 3 years ago to crossfire and never ever even looked back. Wouldn't even consider it for micros. I've crashed so many Rc Helicopters over spektrum... Brownouts or failsafe. I can't even look at spektrum anymore.
I now request tbs on all the bnfs they ship me. Now it’s standard with is great!

Just figured out that spectrum AR meant almost range and the number right after is actually in millimeters for safe line of sight flying LOL... like you i started flying Heli's way back in the day when the Thunder tiger nitro helicopter kits were popular then Align's 450 and bigger kits stole the show with Alan Szabo. I find that Spectrum and a few other receivers don't respond as well to RF Frequency Tune in set up so i try to stay away from spectrum unless i'm flying close in and just off the deck... I find myself leaning more towards TBS & FrSky because they have been the most dependable and can't be beat in price for all that they offer. Thanks for the great review videos! I really enjoy them it really helps me on decision making.

1:05... Yeah I got rid of all my Spektrum Transmitters and Receivers after they crashed 2 of my planes in the same month a few years back. Never went back to that crap.

Although googles recoding isnt as good resolution, brightness, or contrast, i like the fact it doesn't distort toward edge of screen like it does with recording directly of the camera which i am guessing is gopro.
Do you ever range test? Easy to do with modern transmitters.
Well.... DJI FPV units tends to failsafe. Doesn't matter what receiver you have...look into that. I had frsky receiver all worked fine until dJI fpv system.... also I replaced the receiver for a TBS receiver... also the same problem. If someone have that problem please mention it .
you could add some kind of gyro to a plane and then when it goes out of range or receives a SOS signal and no other signals after that make it auto stabilize and go in a slow descend. I had a cheap RC plane which also had a gyro in it which I could enable and it would auto stabilize it. after testing it in some wind which was much stronger than the maximum wind speed they said you could use the plane in (roughly double) and it still flying quite stable bespite seeing the plane randomly teleport to different angles when the wind hit I wondered if it was good enough to kind of land without any trouble. so I flew it up turned it on and let go of the controllsticks. and it went down gentle and didn't really chrash at all other than the wheels getting stuck in the grass.
Don't just throw away that one Spektrum receiver, just put them ALL in the trash. The next one will surely destroy another perfectly good plane. Spektrum garbage has cost me thousands of dollars in equipment over the years. The investment into Crossfire was well worth it. I didn't even sell my Spektrum gear since the next guy would have the same bad experience. I just chucked all that shiet in the trash where it belongs.
Hey man I love that plane that I tell you makes life easier to put a plastic bag inside the plane and when you crash there you go ha ha Ha ha ha always work for me
I have a fishing net and 2 poles I crash my flyer into since I live in rocky terrain.

That's a lot of carnage for a fairly low altitude - were the motors on and actively pushing it into the ground? Shouldn't a failsafe cut the throttle? btw the torrential flood of mid-roll ads is just killing me...

Hey Justin, may I ask why you chose that particular RX? My Dragon V2 is still in its box. I have pretty much everything ready for it except choosing a receiver. I'm thinking about using an Admiral RX600SP. I haven't tried that particular RX on anything yet. But have 2 ready to plant into something. Do you have any experience with that RX? Thanks
Get Tbs Crossfire. Best and very reliable for planes . Or try ELRS RX and a ELRS module. BetaFPV now makes plane ELRS rx.
@@dronecamps yup, got Crossfire. Looking to keep it short range until I get to know it better. I recently picked up a 433 mhz V2 Dragon Link module with a cpl of RXs. A fellow was letting it go reasonably and couldn't say no.

No fixed wings.. I converted to quads and I am finding those much better aircraft. Flying fixed wings is like step back.

@@Northstar-Media yes. Hard to control if you are not used to it. In quads it is just matter of throttle shift and drone explodes in the air vertically - when with the aircraft reaction is much delayed as it is all working differently. Tail is found down first after elevator surface has been pushed by the air and than nose goes up and wing attack increases creating more loft but more drag at the same time.. all is working in completely different principals. And than you got one motor or two motors to pull all this weight and this leads to stall on some point. Than you will realise you don't have any control for the aircraft when it is to slow in the air. . For me it was something I learnt for years and I couldn't figure out how to fly quads at all.. when finally started getting the principals (which took me ages due to fixed wings habits) I realised that is is much more flexible and superior aircrafts over the airplanes. But try. You will crash few times and break it into pieces than you will understand.
Zohd orbit is a great beginner wing. flies slow if you want.

On these Planes u need to fly Spektrumwith Sattelitesattached under the Plane. Then u get better Reception. And Spektrum is not the best for FPV^^
if only parts of the receiver don't work well and randomly chrash you could also instead of throwing it away, adding something to prevent people from using the part of it which is faulty and then combine it with some old cheap stuff taken from broken things and give it to some kid to make some kind of RC car or boat, since for them being very relyable is a lot less important than for planes.
ELRS or Crossfire ONLY, radio problems should never happen these days. (I know this was 2 yrs ago).

Here in Central Europe, Spectrum is also used, but much less. A lot more Frsky, Futaba and, for a year now, Radiomaster with TBS are used here

Yeah I ditched Spektrum after I failsafed an expensive build into the ocean not 300 feet away from me. Crossfire all the way.

What could you expect from 15 year old spectrum? Anything that old from electronics is usually causing problems. I have 3 spectrums few years old and never had any problems.
This was not a good durability test as it broke into pieces!!!!
