    As a machinist it’s interesting. However it’s missing a depth probe. Also keeping it clean when changing tools will be critical. Its accuracy at .01 mm is ok not great.

    That's a really cool tiny beast. I love the idea it could help mark out box joints using the segments mode. It could possibly help with dovetails, too, but I think that because pins and tails are such different measurements (i.e. 1/8" pin with 3/4" tails for instance), it's asking a bit much of it. Then again, the tool has so many other uses. And it actually seems to be able to do all those well. At this point, it's a tad out of my budget, but thank you for showing it!

    Flyndogg,
    Your new tool is very interesting. If you look at the price you're in the Starrett/Mitutoyo range. If I'm paying that much for the caliper I'd opt for the name brand.
    I can speak from experience working after school and summers as a draftsman and as an engineer after college using the "ruler" function is too gimmicky. Using a triangle rule, you get six different scales. They're easy to use. I have a metric, engineer's, and architect's rule. I don't see any advantage of a digital scale.
    Offhand the one real problem I see is the size of the tool. It is awfully big for use as a caliper. It cannot take depth measurements when cleaning a mortise or a hole depth.

    • @FlynndoggWoodwork
      @FlynndoggWoodwork  Před 4 měsíci

    I thought at first “no way I’d pay that for a woodworking caliper” but it’s added use as a ruler and the various ways it can be used means I’ll be saving up to get it! I wish they sold the ruler part by itself, I would buy both just so I didn’t have to take it apart to use the different features. SEMPER FI

    I will be very interested. to see how this is in a few months time. As all the digital callipers I bought in the past are okay at the beginning. but they have all soon. started to let me down. for various reasons. which vary from dampness. temperature. Battery rundown even when switched off. I've just purchased a manual dial calliper. because I've got so sick of them. I've probably got a 10 digital callipers. and I don't trust one of them. One of the most common things I get is the. starting to flash. and jump up and down for no reason. Another one. is Suddenly, to add 5 millimetre to the measurement. Out of nowhere, or use the roller. and roll it backwards and forwards, and it won't zero. I just find them not accurate. He is hoping this one is.accurate? But at the price it is I wouldn't. be lieving in it on my bench. I feel this is more for draughtsman than it is. for a tradesman. Anyway, I look forward to your next video and thank. you and thanks for bringing it to our attention.

      My pleasure Chris! Thanks for watching I 100% agree with your concerns. If I had paid for this thing, I would have a hard time using it all the time, as I would be "protecting my investment" I also agree this is a design with the ruler that I think would be greatly used if you were an architect or something like that. For the caliper alone, there are probably better options, but it was fun to take a look at it! Thanks so much for commenting and watching!

    Interesting lots of techy features, but I just can't wrap my head around how this is actually better than a regular straight edge ruler or a decent quality digital caliper.
    I'm doing wood working not building a space ship!
    Call me old fashioned but when I draw lines I personally find the marking instruments that hold a pencil lead and you move the whole thing along to be rather cumbersome.
    For most woodworking projects, I like the analog metal calipers that are marked off in fractions of an inch to be the most useful for me.

    • @FlynndoggWoodwork
      @FlynndoggWoodwork  Před 4 měsíci

      I totally get it scrook! My point with this video was mainly to show the technology of it. I'm really quite a nerd when it comes to looking at new tools. Sometimes I think technology isn't always better, but at least it shows what could be potentially done in the future. Time will tell if these will replace my tried and true methods (I'm guessing they won't) but it was fun to check out the tech! :)

    Does "I haven't unpacked my set up blocks" really mean I can't remember where I put the darn things? That is a nice tool, I did notice how large the inside calipers were and I also noticed that it doesn't have a depth gauge either. Both of those would really make me think twice before dropping that kind of money. Still, thanks for the fun video.

    • @FlynndoggWoodwork
      @FlynndoggWoodwork  Před 4 měsíci

      You know me too well Pat! It was a combination of me not unpacking everything yet and not knowing where int he hell everything is! :) I agree with you on the inside calipers. They need to sleek that design down so that it can fit smaller holes. Great observation. I was noticing that when I was editing the video, and probably should have commented on that!

  • @jeffstanley4593
    @jeffstanley4593 Před 4 měsíci +1

    The large width of the "inside" caliper pieces limits its ability to measure smaller holes. They look to be from 1/4 to 5/16 inch wide. All calipers that I have seen have those come to a point. Great video but that is not for me.

    Dogg, man gym shorts and a tee? Ain't insulation grand? Can you use that caliper with a lathe? Whaaaat? Thank goodness for the rubber, we wouldn't want to slip off the end. We wouldn't be converting it into a "scale" ruler too often. Seems to us that the more it was taken apart, the more of a chance to either lose the small screw (included) or misshape the caliper head. From your demonstration we think that this is a neat toy, but it would add hours onto a project vs. a standard caliber that you open the jaws and read the measurement. Merry Christmas and support Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.

      Agree, too much work. I just don’t see any value added. That slider tab or even the line on the magnifier is too thick. I have an old school vernier caliper, a Starrett dial caliper in imperial, and several precision rulers from PEC Tools and a couple of marking knifes that do 99% of everything I need in my shop for woodworking. Lately, it seems like tool manufacturers are producing gimmicky stuff like that trying to compensate for proper woodworking techniques. Learn how to take reference measurements, without a ruler or caliper from the actual piece, and your accuracy will increase ten fold.
