    Excellent video! I actually just got one of these from Hozo and I am doing a video on it next week. Your video is by far the best on out there showing how to use this tool. Thank you so much for all of this information!

    I'm assuming that when the battery dies, you just have to throw it away?

    • @UnchartedDIY
      @UnchartedDIY  Před 2 měsíci

      Great question. Here's what HOZO Design says about it in their FAQ:
      "What is the battery capacity? Is the battery replaceable?
      The battery capacity is a rechargeable Li-on 1000 mAh battery. It can be used for about 1-2 weeks on a single charge. Like most electronic devices, the battery is designed to retain an estimated 80% of its original capacity at 500-800 complete charge cycles and is not replaceable."
      It seems like cell phones. Very few phones nowadays have replaceable batteries. But, it looks like it should last quite a few years. Let's say it only lasts a week on a single charge rather than the 1-2 weeks they specify, and 500 cycles vs the 500-800 they estimate. 1 week x 500 cycles = 500 weeks, or 9.62 years, and it will still have 80% of its original capacity.
      In 9.62 years, there will be some new technology that will be even better. Probably an AI driven ruler using quantum holography that shifts space-time to measure down to the molecular level 😁

      @@UnchartedDIY Thanks for the reply.. I was not as much concerned with how long it will keep its capacity for charging, but rather how long until the battery prematurely fails and tries to burn my house down. A lot of these no-name Chinese manufacturers do not care about the safety of their built-in batteries. I own a GPD Micro PC, less than 2 years old, which I use for programming RC sailplanes. Since it gets its primary use during the Spring and Summer, I just leave it down in my basement, attached to the network, during the off months. A couple of weeks ago my NAS started complaining that the PC could no longer be reached on my LAN, so I went down into the basement to investigate. The battery had swelled so much that it had broken the PC's case in half. It could have been days, or even hours, away from catching on fire if the battery had bursted. The PC was only 18 months old. This has happened to me enough times now that I will no longer buy a product with a built-in battery that can't be serviced, unless that product is made by a large, well known company like Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, etc. I have a nice Japanese Mitutoyo digital caliper that is about the same price as the NeoRuler, but it runs on a replaceable button battery which, in my opinion, is how all these tools should be made so they can avoid cheap Chinese lithium batteries.

    This guy has got to be an employee of the company that makes this. I purchased one of these rulers, and while it might be that the hardware itself is acceptable, the software truly sucks. To the point where I can't use the device. There are buttons to go nowhere, there are factory resets that do nothing, and oh, by the way, when you try to contact the company, they say they're not available but you should send them an email and they'll get back to you within 48 hours. That was over a week ago. I really wanted this to work. But it doesn't. If they don't update the software, it's pretty much useless. But what I really resent is this guy trying to push this thing so very hard when it's really not ready for prime time.

    • @UnchartedDIY
      @UnchartedDIY  Před měsícem

      I don't work for the company and do not get paid to review things either. I have no incentive to push anything, I'm simply sharing what I think is a very cool new device. I really like this ruler and haven't had any of the issues you are having, with either the hardware or the software. My experience with it is clearly different than yours, and it sounds like yours has been bad. 🙁
      I'm not being sarcastic, but maybe you should make a video about your experience. And if you know of something better, comparing the two devices would be very helpful.

    make sure you understand ALL of the poorly written directions. if you mess it up - if the little slider pops out and spews little pieces about they won't repair it. even if offered to pay for the repair.

    • @UnchartedDIY
      @UnchartedDIY  Před 3 měsíci

      That's a bummer and it's disappointing to hear. They mention to not let the slider come off, but I didn't know what the consequences were!

      @@UnchartedDIY you are correct -the instructions do say to not let the slider dohickey loose on the world. at the very end of the card. too late. the ribbon cable gets pulled out and thats the ballgame. unrepairable. I will say this, customer service was prompt over 3 emails. they had a pretty nice way of saying, "sorry, round-eye, can't help you". sigh, i ordered another one.... Oh! the written instructions don't say HOW to remove the caliper head, only how to connect it. should I, an immensely well educated user of modern technology have considered that it was the opposite of the install? maybe, but it was already installed so ikid of skipped that. i can only hope this conversation helps others. NB, I'm not panning the device...i haven't had a chance to use it yet.

    • @UnchartedDIY
      @UnchartedDIY  Před 3 měsíci

      Seems to me that if the ruler is toast if the slide comes off the rail, there should be multiple large warnings in the caliper package. A sticker that seals the plastic storage case stating just how important the slider remaining on the rail is would help make that point.
      What might be good news though; the endcap that attaches to the end of the ruler when installing the caliper can stay on there at all times. The caliper can be detached while the endcap stays on forever. All the accessories still fit and it's just as solid.
      I'd love to know how you like the new one. I find myself reaching for this ruler much more often that I had imagined!
