- The first step in successfully installing concealed cup hinges is to choose the right one! Nick shows three basic types of doors - inset, overlay, and partial overlay - and demonstrates how to fit them to cabinets, explaining how to select exactly the hinge you need based on how the door fits the cabinet. He then walks you step by step through a typical installation, choosing, marking, drilling, attaching, and adjusting traditional lipped doors on a framed cabinet.
1:40 Choosing the right hinges
6:55 Making a template to position the hinges or the doors and cabinet
9:27 Marking and drilling the doors and cabinet
13:21 Attaching the doors to the cabinet
14:28 Adjusting the concealed hinges after installation.
For more information on cabinetmaking, see Nick's book on MAKING BUILT-IN CABINETS. It covers planning, building, and installing all types of built-ins. Nick provides standard dimensions for different types of cabinets, explains how to choose plywood and sheet materials, and discusses special considerations in designing a kitchen. And thank you so much for your time and interest!
One of the best explanations out there on the subject and what you need to consider when installing them. BTW... if you buy your hinges from Rockler, spend the extra bit of money and get their matching hinge template(s) for the model(s) you buy. Well worth the money.
Still one of the best woodworking channels out there! Thanks for the video.
Absolutely - right on.
The amount of time spent - quite nice.
He’s an author of many informative books as well. They’re well done. Quite the fellow.
Most welcome.
There's a certain level of knowledge that usually only comes with experience and time spent in woodworking. These are all things that aren't taught in woodworking classes any longer, the tricks of the trade so to speak.
I have been looking for a channel that conveys this kind of teaching for a long time now, only just discovered Workshop Companion and boy am I glad that I have.
Unbeatable! The young kids on the block are all fine and good with their fancy dominos and cnc's, I enjoy that too, but nothing beats an old boy's knowledge and expertise!
I work at Rockler and I just showed this to my associates. Thank you for your wonderful videos. This was so educational
Thanks, JW.
You are definitely THE explainer-in-chief!
Dog credit was nice touch. She is getting her camera time. She looks very smart and lovers her owner.
English is my second language and I still understand you clearly sir!
*God bless you sir!* Only 3 minutes in, and already I've learned things I never knew after maybe 20 years and 1,000 hours of TV and video. I love it when a topic is covered in a concise, top-down systematic, complete, mutually exclusive manner while introducing proper vocabulary along the way. You hit that on all channels.
Thanks for saying. We try.
@@WorkshopCompanion *Nick, Bella, and Travis:* I just watched to the end. Speechless. That good! Thank you again.
I now have fewer excuses for installing an inset door I've put off for 2 years. Absolutely love this channel!
Thanks for saying.
I thought woodworking was beyond my skills; thanks for opening the door.
Most welcome.
Success hinges on experience
Pun intended?
@@JJJJJJJJJJonathanLis Oh, shut it.
@@WorkshopCompanion it's ok, if he wants to try to hit it out of the ball park, let him swing
I watched this because I had a few spare minutes and it seemed like a straight forward topic. I learned so much and now will change how I renovate my kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Thank you very much!
Most welcome.
I've been trying to figure out my partial inset cabinet doors for a couple of weeks and stumbled upon your video. Thank you so much for sharing this information, my wife will be ecstatic to finally be done with our kitchen project, happy wife, happy life!
Glad I could help!
This is the best tutorial and explanation I have found on CZcams. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you.
Most welcome, welcome, welcome.
Best video by a mile explaining the difference between these hinge types.
Thanks.
This is an amazing video, in depth with great explanations and . The demonstration box with 3 different types of doors was just above and beyond. Thanks for giving me the information and confidence to tackle changing the cabinet hinges in my home. maybe i'll even build a cabinet from scratch one day who knows
Thanks for the kind words.
Well done explanation.
This channel is a gold mine for an apprentice woodworker like me :)
Your content is gold.
I just fitted a door using these hinges today for the first time ever but if I’d seen this video I’d have been too worried to take the job on. Things went easily enough. Beginners luck. Thanks for your excellent videos.
Yet again - you taught me something and gave me a laugh. Just love your channel and always get excited with a new release.
This is the exact video I needed to understand the different types of cup hinges. Thank you!
Most welcome.
I work in a cabinet shop. We use these hinges daily. Great explanation!! Only thing I would suggest is leave a 1/8” gap between double doors. Expansion through the seasons will cause problems if you don’t!!
You are a brilliant teacher. Thank you for sharing 🌞
Most welcome. Thanks for the kind words.
Great tutorial and refresher.....thanks! I've installed a lot of Blum hinges but must admit when I first began they were intimidating. Love how they are adjustable and totally concealed when doors are closed though. Really enjoyed seeing Bella doing more "acting" in this video......she's such a beautiful dog. I'm sure she gives you endless pleasure with all her antics!
Most welcome. And both Bella and I thank you for the kind wirds.
Very detailed & well explained. Will flag this video for when I go to redo the kitchen & bathrooms.
Man oh man - who knew??!!?
Most informative.
Most excellent.👍👍
Thanks.
First time Watcher. I'd like to thank you sincerely for providing such vast and accurate information in such an easily digested fashion. You've got a new fan for sure!!
Great overview. Very concise and helpful!
Great explanation as always. I bought the Kreg hinge jig and it works great for aligning everything especially if you are doing a few doors.
Love the south park style intro
I curse the algorithm for showing me this channel only now. Sir, you have EXEPTIONAL didactic skills.
You're not alone. We spend a great deal of time every day cursing the algorithm. I wonder if it would help to worship it?
I work with these hinges every day, so I know all the measurements off the top of my head. They're super easy. We even have the cup hinges for the doors that don't need any screws. It's called blum clip-top inserta. Just drill a 35mm hole for the cup, and two 8mm holes for where the screws would go and it clicks right in place.
whenever i have question about something i always come back to your videos thank you
Most welcome.
My experience is mostly with pre-installed hinges, although I've had to replace plenty of them. I agree that blue language is part of the process.
Thank You. Your video reached out to me and I found it very helpful and informative.
Most welcome.
This is the 6th CZcams video I've looked at and the 10th in total, counting the 4 I watched on cabinetmakers websites. Thank God I finally FINALLY found someone who actually knows what they are talking about! Thank you!
Most welcome.
You are the best... logical, systematic, brilliant. Thank you for sharing.
Most welcome.
As usual a video that shall help all woodworkers.
Thank you so much! All my questions were answered in one video. Fantastic simplifications
Thanks Nick! Well done and very informative! I have solved the partial overlay/partial inset delima thanks to your video.
Glad we could help.
Thank you for the painstakingly detailed explanation, now I am clear on the lipped doors I have and how to install the hinges! Much appreciated
Most welcome.
Always a good watch, always a pleasure.
Low under counter door got loose and popped off after 15 years. Was an awkward position so I couldn't figure out if I had to slide and lock or press and lock or what. All I know, it took like 15 tries and my arms were coming off. Found this channel, and within 5 minutes, I got it back together. Thank you!!
Glad to be of assistance.
Very thorough as always Nick, and some great cameo appearances fron Bella. 👍🏻
Very useful information, explained very well, thank you.
Most welcome.
The best education you can get......Thank you SIR!!!
Most welcome.
OMG Bella is sooo cute! Every time he shows up in these videos I just scream "DOGGO!!!!!!" :D
Real MVP right there!
You are so good at this, simply amazing.
Thanks. Sometimes, after you practice something for 50 years, you figure out how to convince other people you know what you're doing.
as always; a great video that breaks the critical info into cup-sized bites!
Thanks.
Thank you for the teaching. This helps a lot
Great stuff - thank you! Love your dog!!
Me too.
Thank you so much for this great tutorial!🎉😊
Great timing! I just stumbled back across a whole box of these I salvaged from a restaurant remodel a couple years ago
Good luck!
This is my first time watching one of your videos, and you have a new subscriber from it. I appreciate the simple explanations without being condescending, the bits of humor thrown in, and the inclusion of both metric and customary units. Also, Bella is the second goodest companion (my dog, Princess, is obviously the goodest companion).
Thanks for saying...and welcome. Hi to Princess.
You are my hero sir! I was worried and stressed about how to replace my kitchen cabinet door hinge🪛. Your detailed explanation was excellent! Can't thank you enough for making this video.
Most welcome.
So nice, I'm from Europe and I'm learning about European hinges from an American carpenter video 😀
Thanks Nick for the condensed knowledge!
Most welcome.
No , thank you. I've been watching woodworking videos for the last 8 years. Yours is the best, Woodworking channel on CZcams. Not woodworking "influencer", Woodworking. Thanks for all you do.
Most welcome.
Very entertaining, Thanks Nick and Bella.
Thanks from both of us.
Thank you for posting this video.
Thanks Nick! This was a very helpful and informative video. I think I'll build one of those boxes so I can experiment and practice with these different hinges. Thanks again.
Most welcome.
Love this video, Thank You!!!
This vid randomly appeared in my recommendation. What a good, concise, informative and entertaining vid. Well done. Subbed
Thanks...and welcome!
Wow. Love the hinges and covered all well.
Thanks.
Thanks so much for this video! I just wanted to adjust some cabinet doors on a TV stand that I’d bought and assembled (ikea-type thing), so this was a bit more info than I needed. But you made a daunting task seem simple, and just knowing that even the pros get frustrated and toss out some “blue words” and maybe even lose their religion was somehow encouraging.
Most welcome.
Amazing! Thank you!
Most welcome.
It’s criminal how underrated and undersubscribed your channel is. Keep up the excellent quality content!
That's the plan. Thanks for saying.
I subscribed 2 min in!

Needing to adjust the cup hinges in my kitchen cabinets which were installed many years before i moved in. Thanks for showing me how to do the adjustment. You get a "like, subscribe, and comment"
Many thanks for all three.
Another great woodworking video with great tips.
Thanks.
I have never like installing or trying to adjust those type of hinges. After watching this video several times over, I'm tempted to give them another try. Thank you for this video, seems well explained.

Another excellent and helpful video. Thanks!

Love this channel and content! And the stars are just amazing!
Bella says thanks.
Awesome video, I certainly learned something on installing cup hinges.
Thanks.
If only this had been out two weeks ago, would have saved me a few trips to the hardware store, didn't realise there were so many types, sizes and angles of cabinet hinges 😂
It's absolutely astounding how many types of European hinges there are available, and more coming with each new round of catalogues. Mr. Europe is a very busy man.
Awesome info! Best I’ve seen regarding this and I’ve watched a few as I have to install these and I’ve never done it before.
Thanks.
Thank you for another wonderful video
About a year ago, I bought 12ish pairs of concealed hinges (1 product code QTY:12) for a kitchen and somehow got 3 diffrent types of hinge! It would be nice if the stockist put as much thought into their products as you just did :)
Concealed hinges are a constant source of frustration because you can't tell what they're for simply by looking at them. There are six pivot points! Who can look at that and mentally imagine where the door is going to end up when it's open or closed? Consequently, it's extremely easy to put them in the wrong stock bin. Or grab them out of the wrong stock bin. Or put them in the wrong package altogether. I have gotten into the habit of comparing the hinges to the their photo in the catalogue when they arrive.
Thank you for the video. Very well done.
Most welcome.
Congrats on hitting 200k subs!
Yet another excellent video. Thanks much.
Most welcome.
Nick, what a wonderful and clear instructional video. Thank you for posting this. I really like your clear method of teaching. I'm a new sub. Oh yes, and I ordered a book too.
Thanks for you kind words and your support -- YT does not pay most of the bills. And welcome!
Perfect combination of entertainment and education, and motivates me to give it a go 👍
Thanks for saying.
Thanks for teaching. Saving this. Request: can you do a video on different hinges for chests? I made a kitchen bench nook thing and almost spent $200 on Torsion hinges. I don't know what kind of hinges exist now and how to best consider each hinge's weight bearing capabilities. All I really wanted to do was make a kitchen bench with storage that could open and close softly.
Great information and cool dog. What more do you need!
An excellent video. In fact, almost perfect ... superior video quality, excellent sound, marvelous instruction, excellent information and a modicum of humor. More Bella and it would be over the top. Hahahaha. Great stuff!
Thanks for saying.
