I'm just an amateur so you showing how the hinges look and work was very helpful and informative đđ
Great to get a good overview of all the different options available. Even better to see your summary in terms of working out what you need in which situation.
best and comprehensive explanation i have ever seen on youtube
Brilliant you just surpassed all their marketing 'executives' in one go! Lol
Just banged head in one of my cabinet doors and need to fit a slow self close. Supplier has a 'sprung' hinge and now thanks to this I know what that means. Great job thanks.
Glad it helped!
Awesome job! I build most of our own cabinets for our home and my shop. That display really shows in detail exactly what hinges I need to buy for the new floor to ceiling storage cabinets Iâm building for our garage. Thanks so much for taking the time to post this info. I love the Blum products, especially their self closing hardware for drawers and doors.
Iâm happy it helped!
Great video, even as an experienced joiner I just used this as a reference for a wardrobe job to visualise the different hinge options. The reference sheet was super useful too.
Thanks for spending the time to make this video
Doug Crabtree I appreciate you taking the time to comment, Iâm glad it helped đ
This was very helpful, thank you. Much easier than looking up each hinge type one by one. Now I understand the vocabulary and can figure out which kind I need for myself!
Thatâs great feedback, thanks for letting me know!
The best explanation of types of hinges!! Thank you so much! Cheers from Canada.
Iâm glad you think so! Thanks
Helpful video, thanks for the clear explanations and codes, and links to the Blum catalogue. Since I have some inset doors that need hinges, that are just œ" thick, I will go through the catalogue for the right codes for thinner than normal doors.
Mark Fromberg tricky one that - cup usually needs drilling to about 12mm. Something probably exists though. Maybe the small hinges that have a 26mm cup diameter
Thank you for the video. I donât make enough cabinets to know all the different types of hinges. Always learning. Cheers
Perfect, this was excellent! I have been looking for someone to show in plan English what the difference is between different hinge types and there application. Thanks

Very informative Alastair - thanks again.
My 1983 hinge holding my cupboard door just broke, lol. Your video is very educational on informing which hinge I should get to fix my cupboard door. Thumbs up!
Just what I was looking for, especially the 270 degree hinge, looking to replace the broken hinges on a corner wall cupboard where the door is at 45 degree angle to the adjoining cupboards. Thanks for the clear video and description :)
Glad I could help!
Brilliant explanation of all the hinges. I've been driving myself mad going between various DIY shops trying to explain how the hinges I need work.
Now I can go & order exactly what I need.
Great! Thatâs a win then đ
This is very useful and I really appreciate him for all the hard work he has done to make this demo piece.. Thank you very much..
Thanks Iâm glad you liked it!
Brilliant Alastair, this has saved me some time going through the Blum catalogue
This is the best hinge cabinet explanation video!!!!!!! Very informational and great video
Nich Acuña thanks Iâm glad you liked it!
What a great video, many thanks. It was impossible for me the visualize the action of the different variations of cup hinges.
Thanks for making this video before dismantling it⊠Iâm doing a wood project for the first time, a wall desk (made from an old standard desk) with a twist to fit my needs.
With 0 âhinge knowledgeâ I was unsure of what type of hinge Iâd need, never mind what types of hinges there are lol
Iâm still undecided bc I have to think about my design idea & all these hinge operations but none the less itâs been very helpful & will continue to be when I get going! Thank you!
Glad I could help!
This is brilliant, best vid i've seen on the matter.

absolutely amazing explanation. thanks for sharing this great information! :)
This was so helpful while trying to decipher the hundreds of hinges they have. Thanks.
Thanks for commenting I'm glad to hear it!
Alastair, thanks you so much for this clear explanation of these Blum hinges! I bought them not knowing what type I purchased, and hence didnât have a clue about how to install them. Extremely helpful vid for this kid! Cheers from the States, mate. Happy new subscriber here! đđ
Glen M. Danielsen I missed this comment first time around - youâre welcome!
Excellent video. Really well done.
Great video. Right to the point and gave the part numbers. I had spend an our trying to figure out the required hinge for my applications and no one explained as well as yours. Thanks man.
I love hearing this, thanks for commenting!
I needed to put a door on the front of a free standing washing machine, I knew what I needed but could not think what it was called as itâs normally 1/2 overlay or full, needed 2 inset hinges and it worked perfectly, you even gave the codes, thumbs up and subscribed for a thorough video
That's nice to hear, thanks for letting me know!
Thanks so much for this, been looking a very long time for a hinge for my pantry door to open in a certain way and found the name for it on here...post hinge or blind corner hinge đ
Great!
A helpful video, it helped me better understand how these pieces of hardware work. Thank you so much.
Glad it helped. Thanks for commenting!
Personally, Iâd like to give shout out to the designers of these hinges, bloody amazing.
Brilliant Alastair! Thank you for sharing. I'm looking at making a cabinet for my conservatory, and want to use face frames to cover the MDF edges. I was not sure which hinges to use, or what they were called. I now know. đ

Freebird Interiors very much welcome. May i ask/recommend of interior spray paint on wood process video. Im having quite an hustle doing milesi PU paint coating on mdf substrate. Thank you!
My knowledge of spraying is limited to water based products. We get good results with Sayerlack waterbased products. The top coat is code AT99. Purchased from Movac here in the UK. I know a lot of people doing this sort of work using PU products with good results though. Waterbased needs extra sanding down after the first cost due to grain raising but after that you can get a flat finish with a normal amount of denibbing. It depends a lot on the quality of the board; Medite Moisture Resistant MDF is better than most
Freebird Interiors thank you so much for ur reply again! Best of luck for the utube channel. Cheers
Thanks for sharing the details
Thank you. You just saved my client a bundle.
Iâm interested to know more!
Thank you. Most informative.
Amazing content on your channel mate đ
Silver Fox thanks!
I ungraded my normal hinges to Softclose Hinges - but had to use Hetich as the existing holes in the doors (cup side) were 52mm centres. Most of the Blum are 45mm centres. If your carrying out an upgrade - make sure you check the existing door side screw positions/centres. The Hetich hinges also come with a multidue to options - like arm covers and cup end covers.
Hettich hinges are really nice!
Thank you. Very good clear explanations.
Boet T GG youâre welcome, thanks for the feedback
Hey Mr Johnson, Thank you for setting some examples of the many styles of hinges. It seems pointless to view them without seeing the actual action in play. Great Video!
Thank you!
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Great video, has saved me many times. Thanks
Well done mate, great help
By far the best video explanation I've seen of these type of hinges. I was looking for the hinge mounting plate system that Blum refer to as the 'Face Frame Plate' (number HI175L660) and here it was - I was starting to think I must have imagined it. Now to find a supplier here in Australia - but the Blum catalogue (2023) seems to not have it anymore though. Sigh!!!
There are quite a few things which have been removed from the catalogue but are actually still available. Ask around at major hardware suppliers and you may yet find them over there!
Great explanation. Thanks đ
niftap a youâre welcome!

Thank you, very useful info.
Thanks so much, I learned a lot!

This video has quite possibly saved my life... I'm trying to close a weird diagonal space with a cabinet and wasn't sure how to do it. Thank you!! Are you available for questions/consult?
Thanks for that reply. Enjoy your videos and enrolled in the buy me a coffee programme as a thanks

Just what I was looking for đ
Youâre welcome
Thank you! Donât normally do much cabinet stuff, but have a few bits on at mo, so this is great. You recommended screws in another video.. canât find which one. Any recommendations for screws? Iâve just had a load of hinges delivered... and no screws! 3.5 x 16 yeah?
Heriot Handyman we use 3.5 x 17 hospa screws from bagel but 16mm is fine! For years though I ordered a slightly different metal colour to the hinges not realising there was a beet match. The Hafele code for best match (nickel plated) is 015.35.646
Great information. Does anyone know if there's a weight or reliability issue between the top hinge clips vs the newer compact hinges.
Iâm not sure which 2 variations youâre talking about could you help me understand with some links maybe?
This is very helpful. I hope someday you could give us some advices regarding the adjustments of those hinges. Sorry for my clumsy english!
AndrĂ s V thanks for that feedback, I will try and find time to follow up with an explanation on adjustments
Fantastic video. Don't often comment but well done đ
Thank you I appreciate that!
Very useful video! Do you have to have the soft close on both hinges or can it only be on one of the hinges for full size door applications in say a kitche? Thanks
you can turn them off and on until you get the right level of soft close. We find that 3 out of 4 hinges is enough soft close on a tall door, and we usually just use one on a 2-door small cupboard door. So we actually substitute the other hinge for a slightly cheaper sprung hinge without blumotion at all
I'm building understair storage with inset doors so they go flush with the wall above (staircase is on the other side of the wall). A double door cupboard and a smaller single door cupboard. We are doing a self-build and I'm not a fine carpenter! I installed hardwood frames straight into the structural opening and managed to get everything square and plumb, then bought Blum hinges after watching this video. I made a quick prototype of the top door and found immediately that where the door goes to a point, it binds on the inside edge. So I had to remove a section of the top of the frame to flatten it out and it worked great. Installed the doors but hadn't realised the same problem in reverse exists: the OUTSIDE of the other double door binds against the frame when it opens to near 90 degrees.
So I contacted Blum, who were excellent and told me the exact correct product, but unfortunately it needs a mounting plate with additional screw that sits further back in the frame, something like 85mm back as the door is inset. Unfortunately my hardwood frame is only 75mm deep. Ugh. Now I'm wondering if I should ditch the whole frame set and replace with a deeper one. Or if I should make some kind of radius or even notch the frame (ugh) where it binds. It's my own home, so not a customer project... and my levels of care are decreasing as there are so many other aspects of the build to complete! If the former then that's a week of work down the drain :(
Please tell me the exact hinge and mounting plate codes they recommended so I can look them up and understand
@@Alastair_Freebird First I purchased 70T3790 (inset hinge without spring, as I was planning on using the tip-on spring), with mounting plate 174L6100. Everything fits fine except the left door of the double set. (the shorter door.) Then they recommended I go with 71B7960 (155 degree hinge) with 175H7190 (9mm mounting plate). There are a few problems with this solution: (1) my original mounting plate (already installed) has the knock-in fixings but the new mounting plate only has two options, system screws or chipboard. I was planning to test chipboard screws mounted into the knock-in plastic dowels already installed, which I hope will work. However problem (2) is that this new mounting plate part number states "Fix with additional screw if used with
wide angle hinges". As I *am* planning on using these wide angle hinges (I guess 155 degree counts as wide angle?) that screw should be installed. But it looks like that screw is set back an additional 26mm according to the Blum catalogue. As these are inset doors, we also need to account for 18mm + 1mm tolerance. So that's 18 + 1 + 37 + 26 = 82mm back from the front edge of the frame. My hardwood frames are only 74mm!
@@Alastair_Freebird I know it's a weird request but do you have the ability to provide a bit of hinge / cabinet making consultancy over the phone, i.e. some form of pricing for that?!

This was very helpful. I have the Blum 71B3550 hinges which I want to install using the Kreg concealed hinge jig. Iâm having a fart time trying to figure out how many millimeters I should set on the depth when I drill the cup hole. Finding the install info has been harder than I thought. Any ideas?

Million thanks for you..this video very helpfull
Dan abu hassan youâre welcome!
Thank you. My kitchen cabinet doors have started to sag. They were installed over 30 years ago, and have hinges with no mounting plates. Can't find similar online. Guess it's time for an upgrade, but can't afford right now.
Great video. I have been asked by AO to replace with thinner hinge for an integrated fridge installation. Still wondering what they mean by a thinner hinge. Would you be able to advise the best ones for an integrated fridge freezer.
Hi itâs hard to say without seeing the set up! There are hinges specifically made for mounting kitchen doors to appliances
The content is excellent! Keep it up.
Thank you!
This is great! Just started working in a furniture company as a constructor and now I know what everyone is talking about. Thanks! So do you choose the mounting plate accordingly to the thickness of the sides or the door overlay?
Hi Nikolai, glad it was useful. The mounting plate does affect the overlay, and therefore you should consider the choice based on side thickness - a zero height Blum mounting plate gives a 16mm overlay suitable for an 18mm side. A 3mm height mounting plate gives a 13mm overlay suitable for a 15mm side. Bearing in mind also that the overlay is adjustable a couple of mm either way on the hinge
OMG!!!!!!!! FANTASTIC!
Very useful. Cheers
Very helpful, thankyou
Super!
Thanks.
Another great video, bookmarked for future reference - thanks. Have you done anything on dealing with out of plumb cabinets ? I have to retro install / rework a flush MF door in an understairs space where the hinge wall is out of plumb and the hinge plates are screwed directly onto a piece of MDF fixed to the wall. The customer wants a minimal parallel gap between wall and door, so the whole door is going to end up rhomboid.. I am sure this will be achieved with a lot of faffing, but what hinges have the maximum adjustment capability ?
Richard Keith just say no, sometimes customers need expert direction. Always make the hinge edge plumb so the door swings well. Either do an overlay door and use hinge adjustment to overlap the edge to plumb. And/or add a cover strip fitted flush to the face of the door to create a neat vertical gap, all covering the existing wonky structure.
@@Alastair_Freebird Thanks. Great advice as always.
Love the video! Very helpful! Can you please tell me what the name of the hinge type that you describe that 'Sharps bedrooms' use please (at 7.06 on the video)?

@@Alastair_Freebird Thank you!
Hi, very clear explanations. I have angled under-stairs doors to fix as overlay doors on the dividing panels but inset under the frame above it. The high side with the 45 degree point which has the hinges on it is going to catch on the flush frame above which is sloping down if using a standard concealed hinge. Is there a hinge that will move the door out horizontally at the same time as opening so it doesn't move across? Hope that is clear. and many thanks if you can help.
Yes I understand. The 155degree hinge throws the door outwards as it opens more than other hinges however you will still need to cut a bit of a back bevel on the top sloping edge of the door to deal with this issue. Or redesign it so that the door finishes with a bit of a flat top above the slope, and fill that in with a small fixed triangular panel.
An alternative solution that requires no back bevel on the door top would be the Sugatsune 'Lin-X' lateral door opening system
@@Alastair_FreebirdHi. Thanks so much for thinking more about this. I did come across lateral opening hinges myself and made some enquiries. Jet Press also do a similar system. They are definitely something that would solve the problem but the cost is prohibitive. For a large door the Sugatsune hinges would be about ÂŁ350 each so while ideal the the cost is not really affordable. I am still looking. One Utuber built cupboards to the same design but on questioning him he admitted he had to chamfer the back of the apex of each angled door until it would clear the surrounding frame. Regards
Thanks guy, this helped allot
Glad to hear it!
These 12 minutes and 31 seconds just saved me HOURS of trying to figure this stuff out! Thank you!!! One quick question, I noticed that your chart showed that the 170 degree overlay hinge has N/A shown for the unsprung version. Does this mean that a push-to-open feature wouldnât work?
No there is an unsprung version of the 170 degree hinge, I think the N/A was for the half overlay version maybe? Glad the vid was helpful!
Great video, thanks so much for the explanations! Could you tell me the code for the hinge at 6:40, please? And if there are any hinges that accommodate a similar situation?
Do you mean the mounting plates for fitting on the inner edge of a face frame. They are much more widely used in America than in the UK. Example: www.handlesandmore.ca/face-frame-adapter-plate-0-mm.html
Thank you mate!
What is the name of the first hinge he talks about im trying to find the exact same ones
Hi
A complete explanation of the correct use of concealed hinges
The 170degree hinge is mainly used to obtain cero protuding of the door into the case from only 90degree of opening, used with rool out drawers.
That is the reason why it only come in full overlay. Half or inset makes no sense
saludos
Gerardo
Very usefull Alastair thankyou. Would it be acceptable to use any of these hinges on 18mm mdf carcasses as opposed to ply?? Will the screws hold ok?
Hi Giles, way back we used to make our internal carcases from Medite 'premier' MDF and we used mounting plates with simple 17mm long 'hospa' screws (pointy self tapping screws - not the stubby euro screws that require a 5mm predrilled holes). Then we had a call back to a job where the mounting plates were pulling off and I decided the material was not strong enough. This was one of the reasons for switching to birch plywood carcases (prior to us having an edgebander or CNC). However now our standard internal carcases are made from melamine faced MDF, from Finsa's '12-Twenty' range. We use the euro screw type of mounting plate, and i am confident about the fixing. This particular range of Melamine faced MDF has a pretty good core. I still wouldn't use the hospa screwed plates in it though.
@@Alastair_Freebird thankyou Alastair I really appreciate your detailed answer
I was so jazzed to finally find the hinge I needed (the funny little one) but you have no description for it.
This was a bit of an oversight sorry. Please see all the details here: instagram.com/stories/highlights/17955056138320141/
We have older cabinets that have a partial inset, does Blum carry any soft close hinges for this?
Iâm sure you can do it - if you are referring to inset sideways across the cabinet then there is a half overlay hinge with a cranked distance in between the full overlay and full inset options. If you are referring to a partial inset forwards/backwards into the cabinet then you can just move the mounting plate position to suit.
Hi
iam fitting some clip on 110 degree o overlay soft close hinges with a euro plate, the 35mm hole sits 5mm from the door edge
Can you please advise me how far in the holes should be on the carcass for the Euro plate.
Hinge type...CC110SEC2/PB

Hi they are 37mm from front edge of carcase
So helpful, thank you. Would you know the code of the mounting plate at 6.50 please as cannot find in the Blum online catalogue? These plates would be ideal for a current project I'm working on. Thanks
Hi sorry for the delayed reply. HI175L660. There are a number of variations though
@@Alastair_Freebird thank youđ
With regards to the 170 degree hinges, does the mounting plate still set back 37mm from th edge of the carcass?
13limb yes
I have downloaded your hinge sheet, I donât see the sharp bedroom type hinge in your video, do you know what the code for this is please, thank you again
Hi I do get asked about that little hinge a lot! Itâs not on our hinge sheet because we donât usually use it. Itâs this one www.tcfixings.co.uk/product/blum-110-face-fit-compact-hinge-plate/16540?gclid=Cj0KCQiAqo3-BRDoARIsAE5vnaL4mjwSIbKr9kniaPbeXsQBSPqvT0wWWHkxLAU8t8PPygCHX3-tJjEaAhYoEALw_wcB
Thanks for the video. Could you explain why Blum Tip-On or push can only be used with unsprung hinges? As far as I know Blum also sells a buffered version which they claim is intended for sprung hinges. Has you tested those by chance do you know what is the difference? Or is it just the same Tip-On with magnetic and rubber tips.
Hi sorry I missed this comment first time around! If a sprung hinge is used with a push latch, it just means it will open as far as the latch travels and hold there until you get your fingers in and pull it open. Personally I think itâs a nicer effect for the door to swing freely open after the latch has released and given it that initial push. Iâm not aware of the specific rubber tipped one youâre talking about but⊠come to think of it I can see some benefits to it because it wouldnât need to be magnetic (the door will hold closed due to the hinge springs) and it will be a much quieter operation without all the clicking and hard contact.
When does the use of a third hinge come into play, as it relates to the door height? Iâm sure weight and width are factored in. But I have some frameless cabinets that will have full overlay doors that are 18â wide, made of 3/4â thick CVG Fir plywood. Should I use three hinges?
If in doubt use another hinge. And see this guide: ea.blum.com/en/number-of-hinges/
Great, thanks!
TYB439 Iâm glad it helped, thanks for commenting
Great video, thanks
Thanks for the comments, glad the videos have helped
Thanks for sharing. What hinge would you use if you had internal pull outs drawers is there a hinge to allow for 12 x 450mm drawer slides which would make the drawer 25mm shorter then carcass opening but will the hinges be protruding enough to affect drawers. Thanks Dave ,
david osullivan I normally set the drawers back inside the carcase about 90mm to be well clear of the hinge arms, and make the drawers in their own sort of sub carcase within the main one, with fillers either side about 40mm to keep the drawer fronts well clear of the hinges as they open past them. I hope that makes sense. 12mm clearance either side will not be enough
david osullivan see how I did the drawers here: czcams.com/video/6ad-v6HPBgw/video.html
Freebird Interiors thanks Alistair , my problem is I built a free standing pantry with drawers, shelves the lot fully functional i have doors nearly done .I now i am deciding about hinges đ . Silly I know fail to prepare , prepare to fail but what about these zero protrusion hinges that allow for shelves to slide out , I still think I wii get caught đ„” stay safe regards Dave
david osullivan I think they still stick out too far. Maybe a different approach with a traditional hinge or piano hinge arrangement ?
when using pull out drawers all hinges of this kind are a pain as they limit the size of the drawer box. For inset doors use butt hinges and there is almost no restriction on the width of the drawer. They are also not the kind of hinges found on melamine covered chipboard furniture which is a plus quality-wise.
Very useful thanks.
Glad you thought so!
Hey Where can we get that plunge system push to open piston & what it called
âTip-on pistonâ from Blum part code 956.1004
