    Just purchased my first cabinets ever with inset doors. Till this time everything has been full/partial overlay or frameless. Really like the look but not a fan of barrel hinges so this was very informative.

    size your face frames so that 3/8 of the bottom and top of the boxes are exposed and can act as positive stops for the doors to close on. make your face frames 1/16 thicker than the doors and use 1/16 inch rubber bumpers. ditch the face frame mounting plates, clients always break them and they intrude into the storage space. instead, use blums clip wing mounting plates. they mount to the box sides like a typical mounting plate, but they range from 6mm to 29mm plate heights specifically to match almost any inset face frame application... pg 61 in the concealed hinge catalogue.

    Thanks for sharing Jordan. I remember talking to you at IBS at Jeld Wen about this house and how you sold it to move to a smaller house. I like the built up crown molding. Not sure how well the painted finish would hold up with your big family. The one issue you missed mentioning is about how humidity must be controlled on inset doors. I have seen inset doors become a real mess because humidity was not controlled. Looking forward to seeing your next videos.

      @JordanSmithBuilds  Před 5 lety +1

      Good to hear from you again, Jason! Yeah, the tight tolerances of insert cabinets can be wrecked if you don't have your space conditioned with stable humidity. I messed that up before and had to trim all of the doors and drawers to get them to fit. Then in a few weeks/months the gaps started opening wider as the wood shrunk. Ugghh.

    Central TX cabinet maker here. Enjoy your videos Jordan! I only use Blum hardware, hinges and slides. They're the best. A clean way to get your stops in an inset box is to have your top and bottom rails overlay the ply 5/16. That leaves 5/16 for your door to land on + an 1/8 reveal. But, top and bottom of box will need edge banding prior to face frame install. More tricky to nail the frame on, have to use caution, but it can be done. You can also add a 1.5" strip of ply on top and under box to give you more substrate to nail to.
    Another option is flush out the the bottom like your cabinet in the video but add another 3/4 deck on the inside.

    Wes Vogus has the right idea. You can bring down your bottom rail 5/16" below bottom layer of cabinet to reveal that 5/16" edge for your door to hit. And at the top of cabinet install a strip of wood all the way across the inside part of cabinet instead of a short block for the door to hit. This is how I build mine for inset doors, now you have a cleaner look .

    Attaching to the door is no problem. I just want to make sure I will be fine with 1 1/2" face frames. There will only be about 5/8" of space for mine because I'm using 3/4" plywood for the box and I let the face frame slightly overhang the box.

    Hi Jordan, I am using 175H5030.21- Inset face frame cam adapter plate
    , 75T1650- Blum CLIP TOP- 107 degrees- Dual Application. I believe the only difference from the one you used is that my clip top is 107 degrees while yours is 110 degrees. I tested on two pieces of 3/4 inches wood, one for the hinge, one for the plate. I used 6 mm tab (distance from the edge of door to the edge of hinge cup). The issue is when the door (one piece of wood) is closed, the door is at an angle to the frame, which should be flush and flat. I understand from your video that the stop at the top of your cabinet is supposed to prevent the doors being pulled to the inside of the cabinet by the hinges. I wonder if that is the reason that the two pieces of wood is not flush and if I switch to install on the actual cabinet, the problem will disappear. Or I might have installed them wrongly. Can you pls advise? Thank you.
