- Hyper 3.0 has finally arrived! What started out as 2 bikes I bought at Walmart back in 2019 for $150 each has continued on. The first video I did was trying to do some inexpensive upgrades to make it better but keep it under $750. It wasn’t bad but wasn’t great either. After the video was made my brother in law rode it for a while while his bike was broken and it hasn’t been touched ever since. I built a Ranger from the Mexican Brand Mercurio that you can get for 250 on department stores, works great on mountain!

@@BikingRoots went with an Suntour Epixon fork, Full Deore drivetrain, both stem and handlebar from Deity, some eThirtheen rims, Vittoria Mezcal Tires and TRP brake set. Its great on the mountain due to the frame and its angle. About 1150 USD to the currency or 23,500 MXN pesos!

I actually bought what I believe to be a Hyper Hydroform that has some VERY similar upgrades to what you had on this one (Epixon fork, DNM shock, Cane Creek stem, and a few other goodies). I'm not 100% certain that it's the same frame because the previous owner slapped a turquoise paint job on it, but the geometry and welds look identical. So I haven't built one myself, but I bought one that was built. I'm debating if it's worth picking up a Specialized frame I found on Pinkbike for a good deal and swapping that in since everything else is aftermarket.
That seat is freakin awesome!! The new Walmart bikes have the better geometry and frames. That new Kent bike Kev Central just did the review on is close to bike shop quality. Still think it’s fun building these bikes. Really enjoyed my Hyper. Great build video 🤘
Haha, I know right! I honestly haven’t really looked into the new walmart bikes or seen any of Kev Central’s video in a long time. I’ll have to look at the Kent one. Appreciate the comment!

I did the same thing with a cheap Croatian bike, Spring Expert HD and I luv it, people luv so I sold it for good but seriously unexpected profit then
it started for me, the thing with upgrading cheap bikes, making them better, it is just fun! :)

I have upgraded a few of these and while the process was fun to learn how to wrench on a bike, I have found it makes way more sense to buy one outright.
Thanks for the comment. Yes I would agree with that. It is a learning experience but yeah any custom build (unless you have parts laying around) usually ends up costing more and not always the best option! What kind of bike did you end up buying outright?

Best part about being new and stumbling on your Hyper videos is that i didn't have to wait the two years lol. I actually have this bike stripped down to the frame, have had it for probably 2 years as well. Bought it as my first mountain bike, wrecked the parts on it and planned on rebuilding, but didnt know enough about bikes in general to do it. Since then I've been riding a Rockhopper that ive customized quite a bit and think its finally time to do a full build on the hydroform. Cheers and great videos, will be sticking around the channel:)

Shoot brother, I have the hard tail version of this and I love it! Yes, I upgraded the heck out of it and I have total 1150 in mine, but there’s just something about budget builds that I’m obsessed with.

I built an Axum dp to the tune of about $1250 and I’ve been digging it. Cheap and build is fun.
The rear pivots are all brass bushings, the plastic bits on the outside are just dust seals 😛

done the same last week but with a ccm shadow (one of the worst bicycle compagnie of the last 20year for a tons of canadian) like i alway say my money my shit ahah ut it ended up with like 1000$ of upgarde fork shockrock silver 150mm, the same rear suspnesion than you in 165x35mm larger front wheel pedal grip brake and many more ! BIKE value was 900$ back in 2019 when it was sold as a new bike pay for them 280 pretty good shap many original piece with a good looking now she start looking like a mullet becaus of the 150mm travel fork snapped on ahah !

I have a Schwinn Taff 29er hardtail that I built up. The only thing stock is the frame, much like your Hyper. I do love that bike.

@@BikingRoots Did a budget build overall. Went with Bucklos tapered air forks 120mm, Bucklos wheelset, 11-speed LTWOO gearset, IXF crankset, 32T oval, Raceface 780mm bars and Wake stem, Tektro hydraulic brakes.
I have since acquired a Niner full squish, which is my main ride now.

You really need to build the Mongoose Ledge X1. Much better full sus from Walmart with tapered ht, ball bearing pivots, modern geo, etc.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I think I’ve heard of that one. Looks like for some people could be an option. The tapered HT is kind of deceiving to some because they assume it is better. I’m not 100% certain but on most bikes with tapered ht and coil inexpensive forks, the fork isn’t tapered and just use a tapered ht to straight steerer adapter so if you ever upgrade your fork, you need to buy a new headset. In addition, it is very difficult to find a tapered fork with a quick release hub these days, most will require boost hub with a 110x15 thru axle so that would involve a new hub or new front wheel to work with your new fork. Yes it can be done it just gets costly! Anyways, hopefully in the future there can be more inexpensive options in the full suspension arena.

I bought the Mongoose Ledge X1... I have not upgraded anything yet... I may just sell it and get a decent used bike....as I can get overwhelmed with all the various different options for this weight weenie with not a good budget..
I have in mind what I thought would be nice upgrades...but I can see how the longer I wait to buy things...the more they go up in price....
Thanks for your comment. I’m not familiar with that bike but maybe it could be nice to upgrade. I agree though, that it can be daunting especially if you don’t have the right tools and know exactly what to buy. I’d try and get a price list on the essential things that need to be replaced and then what you are looking at. Yeah sometimes, especially now, you can find some sweet discounts on great used bikes. Just make sure you have someone who knows bikes check them out first or else you may be looking into a bunch of issues after the sale just to get it working properly. I’ve seen it happen many times! I would like to get a 29 air fork and wheel to go with for a mullet ride... I like to jump and also don't like having to get off the bike to get around obstacles or climb hills.. I also think that I can get less pedal strikes with a taller fork as the bottom bracket is low... I came from bmx bikes and am used to 175mm arms.. the Mongoose already has 170 and I don't wanna go even smaller meaning I have to spin faster and have less range of motion... thinking if I can get more suspension to keep the bike up a bit from ground...that may help. I want a lighter back wheel with a quiet hub... so I don't add to the noises of nature...other than tires and breathing ... haha!
Don't feel the need for carbon bars...but will want a different set of grips as the stock ones twist on me. I think I know the pedals I want...some flat ones with metal spikes...I do wanna do a light internal dropper though.. I'm 5'9" and ride a 17" hardtail (with a cracked headtube) and love the way that rides.. It started with a rigid fork and I put a RS recon (to keep my rim brakes) as it is an early 90's bike.
I was gonna go with a IXF hollow bottom bracket and maybe just keep the mechanical disc brakes for now...as well as the original saddle...although there was a plastic seat that caught my eye that looked ultra light and reminded me of the old school bmx seats (no padding)
What are your thoughts on this build?
Sounds like you have a pretty good plan! Ha, nice yeah I don’t like the noisy hubs either (even though now mine is noisy). Yeah, I wouldn’t do carbon bars (the good ones are pricey). Sounds like you have a good vision and experience for this build! I’d say go for it!

The Hyper? Not currently for sale unfortunately. Its a shop bike we let buddies ride/ loaner bike at the moment
for those of us that don't have the big bugs sometimes spend 1600 bucks on a bike, putting decent upgrades on a bike like that is probably well worth it, to us
Thanks for the comment and yes I agree for some it would be worth it especially if they learn along the way and enjoy doing it. I just always caution to make sure after parts, labor, and tools you aren’t over what you could pay for another bike that could be better.
Hey, I have a hyper hydroform, but I've been having troubles with my rear derailleur. It's been approximately 5 times that has gone broke along with my aluminum hanger (bended). I'm thinking about replacing stock transmission... Do you think that'll fix the problem?
Thanks for question, apologize about the delayed response. Yes, I would recommend replacing your derailleur. You can get an inexpensive derailleur from Microshift with a clutch. You can get an 8 speed and then adjust the limit screw so it will act like a 7 speed. It will then stiffen up your drive train so hopefully it doesn’t take so much abuse and keep breaking.

Thanks, yeah it depends on what kind of riding you do. If you are just riding around the neighborhood and very light trails, it may be good enough. For us it wasn’t so we wanted to experiment with it.
My epixon doesn't make that noise when it tops out. Wonder if it will eventually 🤷🏻♂️
Hopefully not. I've had a lot of people not have any issues while others have. I think I bought some during a bad batch and therefore had lots of issues with the ones I used.

Wow! Thanks for sharing! That’s a pretty sweet build. The 30.9 dropper worked in there? For some reason when I tried, the seat tube was too tight and the seatpost it came with said 30.4. That’s cool that you still ride it and have done it for 3 years!

Look it from a standpoint of mechanical ability, people who learn to work on cars or build them up themselves are much more knowledgeable and inciteful than a person who just throws money at a project with no real understanding of the build other than the names on the parts being used.
I'd rather buy bike components from someone who suggests building your first bike yourself.
But I always forget that there are people out there who couldn't boil water without starting a fire..

Not enough people appreciate budget builds, they’re all bikes, let’s not get too elitist now. I thought this was great, these are the bikes that introduce people to the sport. Also, you adapted a straight steerer to a tapered fork??? I thought that was impossible, at least everything I’ve heard has said it was. Could you shed some more light on that and the product?
Thanks for your comment. Our shop is geared towards beginners and we fix plenty of walmart and academy level bikes. For some they are fine, but for others they could be a money pit and just need to save up and buy either a new higher quality bike or a used. I am sad that prices have gone up so much because I feel a lot of people will settle for something cheap or just stay out of the sport! Regarding your question on adapting straight steerer head tube to a tapered fork. Yes, it can be done (but it can take a bit of modification sometimes). For this bike we used a Cane Creek EC 44/40 external cup which has the cup and a 1.5” bearing to fit on the tapered fork. The inner part fits up into the head tube. Depending on the bike, that measurement can vary on height and width so best to measure or consult others who have done it. On some bikes we’ve had to trim off some of the cup to allow it to fit inside the head tube. I’ve done it on my son’s bike and other customer’s bikes as well who wanted a tapered fork. Wolf Tooth also makes some i believe and I think Chris King if I remember correctly. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions

Yeah, you’re probably right! It’s crazy how quick the price shoots up when you’re building a bike and yes it can get out of hand quickly especially if you are paying someone else to do the labor. Yeah I wouldn’t recommend someone do what we did unless they had some parts for way cheap and stumbled across the frame or something similar. How’s your MTB these days?

Depends, most parts are universal. So you can revert to stock and keep moving the parts to a new frame
