- The Hyper Hydroform was one of my favorite Walmart bikes, but recently it was discontinued. It has now been replaced by 2 new Hyper bikes: Hyper Explorer HT (hardtail) and the Hyper Explorer Full Suspension MTB. I have purchased both of these bikes, along with the new Hyper Carbon X 29er, and this video is my first look at the Hard tail version of the new Hyper Explorer.
We're finally seeing 1x drivetrains hit Hyper bicycles, but in equipping the Explorer HT they also made a few sacrifices to meet the price point. Check out the video, then comment below with your opinions on the new Explorer HT and how you think it stacks up against the older Hydroform.

From a mechanic: when one end of the cassette shifts well but the other doesn’t, it usually indicates a bent derailleur hanger. It only takes a slight bend to affect shifting.
This.
Or end point adjustment? Bent deraillure hanger will be worst case scenario.
I disagree. A bent derailleur hanger usually makes the MIDDLE of the cassette inconsistent. One end or the other being off usually means bad indexing or end point adjustments.
They can be trued with special tools
I was looking at these and the DS version at Wal-Mart a few days ago and the DS that they had the hanger was bent so bad the spokes were clicking on it as I turned the tire
Clicked on this video and started watching not even realizing it had 0 views, always a treat when KevCentral uploads!
my wife and I bought bikes. this hyper was the one I decided on. when I first got it home and air into the tires, I had a lot of problems with it (warped rear tire, gears skipped, uncomfortable seat....and a couple other small things). I was patient with it though. I really liked the 9 speeds, the solid frame (rather then the red hyper with the single shock), and also how well it felt with my build. so, with that, I worked on it for a couple weeks. tinkering with this and that, making different adjustments, and even went through both wheel spokes---completely setting their tensions. with some time and effort, I was able to turn this $250 bike into a $800 top brand bike. today I took it for a good ride---it felt smooth, solid and safe. def recommend it as a quality inexpensive bicycle.
Same. My Walmart had a couple boundaries but when I went back to buy one they were all gone and there was one hyper left. Figured , it couldn’t be all that much worse. Probably watched an hours worth a rear derailer videos then I finally got it shifting decently .... the seat is VERY uncomfortable at least for me lol it might be the only thing I replace.
Its hard to see bikes like this when Schwinn raised the benchmark so much.
@Barry Weaver have you seen the Axum video
What's the weight of this bike
I recently bought one of these bikes for my friend because I accidentally broke his old Mongoose that he had. Obviously I don’t have the cash sitting around to buy him a name brand bike like mine but I felt bad and wanted to give home something to ride. I saw this bike and it was perfect because it’s got the trigger shifters, disk brakes, detachable derailleur hanger, and 1x drive train. We mostly ride on the roads in my neighborhood but we will sometimes hit the trails with our bikes. I would like to start going mountain biking with him more often and I figured this would be the perfect bike for a beginner like him because he could upgrade it as he progresses and it was in my price range. This video helped me be confident in my decision. Thanks Kev!🤟👍
I hope Schwinn reads these comments because they knocked it out of the ballpark. This bike does a great job of showing that too. I know that the new Schwinn bikes don't compete with $1000 local bike shop bikes. I know that some people still don't see the value in them and still talk bad about them. But I know that I have friends who want to try out mountain biking. I know that if I told them it would be at least $500 to get started in the sport, they would never see a trail. And I know that I can recommend the new Schwinn linup knowing that it will be a good bike on and off the trail, along with give them an upgrade path for if they take to the sport and outgrow the hardware on it. I see this bike from Hyper and it's disappointing because its such a step backwards. Especially the skinny head tube. Besides the geometry, it feels like just another mountain bike "style" bike, not a mountain bike.
Have you ever actually watched a XC race in your life? Would they compete on a Schwinn style frame or this in 2020?
@@thiosemicarbizidebenzoylal2921 Are you serious? Neither. When did I even bring up XC racing? I am talking about entry level bikes for getting people out on trails that are a step up from recreational hiking paths.
@@thiosemicarbizidebenzoylal2921 why is this bike better than schwinn?
I bought this bike, and converted it into a dirt jumper...mostly, because I haven't seen anyone that has converted to a DJ yet, so I did it.
I upgraded the bars, stem, seat, pedals, and front suspension and the grips..its a new feel jumping a 29er, but it's working just fine..💪🚲🚲
I'd seriously consider this if it had a tapered head tube and quick release wheels. But at that price, seems like a great bike for a beginner mtb'er or person on a budget.
I really like this bike I bought it 2 weeks ago to get in the trail game I was looking at other bikes u review and took into account some of the stuff u point out on what to look for thanks for having this channel.✌
Did you have problems tightening your handlebars so they wouldnt move?
@@johnblunk2012 I also got this bike to get back on the trails cheep. I haven't had any problem with the handlebars or getting into all 9 gears.
i also have this bike and ive been jumping it and go through some hard trails no issues other than tuning brakes, i have new handle bars, grips, and wake stem on the way for it and then some new forks eventually
oozyNgoozy Hows the bike looking now?
"Take a doctor from someone" WOW I've never thought about it, thanks for insight!
I bought the new boundary and I love it thanks for making these videos they got me back into mountain biking without spending alot hopefully you make the boundary a project bike
Same story here! I have 4 bikes now 😂. My wife has no idea why she's mountain biking all of the sudden LOL!
I also bought the boundary. Actually two of them. One for me and my son. Promptly broke the b screw on one. Pacific was easy to work with. Complete new derailer an its way.
How tall are you? I’m deciding between the Boundary or Al Comp. Congrats on the new ride.
Some of my experience in riding this since Oct 1, 2020, or about 7 months and probably thousand or more miles as it's my primary transport... my advice is to check rear wheel wobble when you buy it and often as you ride it. Mine had some wobble on purchase, apparently bearing preload on rear axle wasn't properly done. I ended up destroying the rear freehub assembly along with needing a new wheel when the wobble caused the wheel to slip/turn to such a degree that the axle bolt was hitting the inside of the freehub where socket inserts. Rounded it out, damaged, unable to remove freehub, plus bearings shot. Axle was also bent. Hyper sent a new rear wheel, made sure with help of a bike shop that rear axle is tightened proper and good to go. Also, using a Park Tool universal crank remover I stripped out threads on drive-side crank arm. That was also replaced. Since that time the bike has been pretty solid and is my primary transport. Tires are near-bald now as it's a 5-mile round-trip to nearest store for me. 10 miles to nearest large Walmart store. 12+ to some of my doctors. All in all, it's been a good bike, but realize that there are some weak areas. That rear axle is WIDE, make sure it's tight and no wobble or play at all in that rear wheel. Also, if you take bottom bracket apart, I chose to reinstall with loose bearings rather than the caged bearings that came with the bike. When caged bearings fail things get ugly in a hurry and you could scar/score up the bearing races if you don't catch it in time. As there was no plastic sleeve insert in my bottom bracket, I made one from cardboard paper towel roll, that way should any of the loose bearings pop out into the interior of the bb then they won't find their way through all the bike tubing. Rear axle already uses loose bearing method on purchase, don't know why they didn't do that with bottom bracket. Brake pads are getting thin, and will have to replace those soonish. Frame seems solid all the way around, forks too though I have noticed some shuddering from them going down high-speed slopes around town. Got tired of 3 flats in one week forcing me to walk home or walk to aid or assistance, so filled stock tubes with Slime sealant. 8oz bottle, half in each tube, haven't had a flat in the 3 months since. I would love to use this bike as a touring bike with all manner of racks and accessories, but can't for now until I lose weight to get safely below the max 275 pound weight limit. Oh yeah, once you get shifter set up so it's hitting all 9 gears (i recommend watching Park Tool video for that) the shifting on this beast is sweet. After that you should only need to tweak cable tension once in a while. Less often as the bike gets broken in good. So far, I had a love-hate relationship with the bike and when the rear wheel issue hit within 90-day take-back period and I very nearly did. But Hyper was very responsive and within a few days had a big box at my door. Can't say enough about them and the fact they'll work to make you happy and stand behind their product.
Thanks for the review Kev, Looks like a decent big box bike. I tell myself that $248 isn't a lot of money for a decent bike, but when I picked my Trek marlin 6, 29 inch, up for $230 last year from a pawn shop and it really is a decent bike, it's hard for me to think I would pay $248 for a big box bike when I know the second hand bike market can have higher end bikes for better prices.
I just love this channel. Its so good to see someone into upgrading bike box bikes. Unfortunately i was hit by a car last week and my bike was totaled. Watching all your videos while i save for a new one. I'm sure ill have some great ideas from the channel by the time im able to afford another bike. Never realized how much riding contributes to my daily happiness. Been a bit depressed having not ridden in a week.
Did it hurt you?
@@KevCentral thanks for asking. Not too bad. Scratched up but nothing major. There was an officer having coffee across the street too. I was actually very lucky because i had spine surgery last March. Was more bummed about about the bike to be honest. Was a 2005 Giant warp ds3 but completely modernized 35mm bars, aluminum everything, new everything. Forks bent to the frame. Headtube belled and snapped. And a set of Mavic. X139s from 2002ish brand new old stock i took out of the box 2 days prior. I bought a storage unit of bike stuff and had like 10 sets over the years. Anyways sorry for the rant. Felt good to get that off my chest haha thx and keep up the great content
On the good side:
That bottom bracket. Bottom Brackets are cheap, but at least the "adjustable" ones can get a good grip on the wrench, versus needing to buy a $20 extra rod, or a unfindable m8x1.0 5cm bolt, or engineering a solution to get the cartridge tool to not slip. My opinion is to either use adjustable bottom brackets, or go all the way to an external bearing setup.
Bolt on wheels. There is absolutely 0 reason to use QR on a bike for anything more than a seat clamp or a light mount. Call it security if you want, but a bolt has more clamping force which will hold the alone. Side effect: You don't have to worry about the jackoffs that like to loosen the QR (just open it and leave it) with a bolt on wheel.
On the negative:
1x at this price point is useless. This is a hardtail with clutchless derailleur, and is probably not designed to be ridden hard. A 2x9 would not be a selling point, and this has less gear range usable.
If this bike were $150, it would be a scam, at $250 it is just outclassed by the Al Comp and the Boundary. Heck, if you were only going to use it on hardpack trail or city roads, then the schwinn kempo blows this out of the water for only $10 more (it has a full tourney drive-train and without the crappy big box suspension fork).
3 years later I have price display it gets now 298 at Walmart and no current changes it is currently on the list ask my bike savings is growing I once read a comment from a manufacturer that stated bolt on wheels for anti-theft I just felt that was getting nothing for nothing I really enjoy your upgrade video and I will keep following on this one
Bolt on wheels are a pro honestly, not a con. Depending on where you live, bolt on wheels are a massive stress reliever when you have to lock up your bike and leave it for long periods of time. I've converted many quick releases over the years to bolt on purely because it saves me from having to carry extra cable locks. So I definitely wouldn't put bolt on wheels as a con, even on high end bikes just having that one extra step a thief might have to take to get anything is worth the extra 10 seconds to remove a wheel at home.
Makes sense! I can see your point. But for me, the ability to take the wheel off and throw the bike in the back of my Subaru is well worth it. I won't use it as a commuter, just a play toy. To each their own - and we both have great options.
qr is a matter of convenience, be it for the owner or the dickhead stealing your wheels.
idk why one would be commuting on this other than it being their only bike. especially now at $398, one can get an ebike for a bit more and not sweat to work.
it would take a fool to pay $398 for this bike.
Some here have asked about fitting Quick release wheels in place of the stock bolt on wheels.
Heres my experience:
I'm running a set of Giant SR-2 QR 9mm wheels now, mounted with Gravel tires @
100mm F / 135mm R width.
So this bike has same standard as many Road / Gravel & MTB 29er Disc.
I had these extra Giant Road wheels from my Giant Contend SL2 Disc Road Bike after upgrading to Carbon Road Wheels.
Just sitting there !
One day I was staring at my new budget Hyper Explorer Hardtail 29 & thinking, boy I wish it had lighter wheels & QR, maybe a cassette 9spd.
Suddenly a bike Angel whispered "Try those stock Giant Road Wheels you have gathering dust"...yeehaw... perfect fit.
If you'd like something similar - I'd suggest calling a big city bike shop & ask if they have any factory Aluminum Disc Brake 700c / 29 "Take off wheels" for sale, always from some $$$ guy who upgraded his wheels to Carbon right off.
Craigslist should have them too sometimes....
Hope that helps some of you out !
I'd consider but probably go home with a Schwinn.

Okay I have to ask, are you returning these bikes or donating them? Because you have reviewed over 50 bikes
My brother just started riding and I didn’t want to spend 600-1000 on a Christmas bike and got him this because he’s still stupid cautious . Plus we live in Florida so we see more flat obstacle/ dirt jumps ... check in with me in January! I’m curious to Compare to my trek marlin 5 ONLY because of the 1x up front lol
In that category, I would take the Schwinn Al comp (I really don’t mind 3x drivetrains, and I like the components) or the Boundary (a clutch!?) over the hypers.
I was going to walk away with the Boundary the other day, but it's really big (way too big for my stubby legs).
So AL Comp it is! And for $50 less, new pedals, new grips, and a new stem right away for the same price. Pretty cool!
The Schwinn Al Comp with the $50.00 upgrade, especially the MegaRange might still be my favorite. I need to compare the inches per turn of the crank, High and low gears to decide. I'm sure someone will sort out what's wrong, why the 1x9 needs to be run as a 1x8. I'd like to see the advantage of a 1by over a 3by; but, if the 1by's don't have the range of gearing I need, I'll go for the 3by. Are my expectations too high?
I’ve got a 2020 Schwinn boundary and I love it
Nice review! I like the color, but glad I bought the 2020 Schwinn Al Comp! Al Comp has the features and looks that I wanted!
Congrats on the new bike
Where did you find the 2020 Schwinn? I been searching
@@michaelmosley1385 me too! I'm looking for the Boundary and their out of stock around here, except for a couple 2019's left over.
@@KenOtwell I got the axum it's a very nice bike after I put a 1500 watt rear hub motor on it I don't do trails just to work and back. Good luck
Schwinn with those tapered necks..... I love you Hyper, but we don't want big box sized necks. The Hydro has it all, i really hope they continue that model.
Thanks for the vid, looking forward to the red one next 👍
I'm just a little bit disappointed with this bike. While Schwinn have a tapered headtube this has actually gone backwards and given us exposed bearing cups. Other things like the grips, brake levers, bolt on wheels, bottom bracket, and ugly chain guide made me glad I went with a Hydroform. I do like the drivetrain and the geometry though.
You simply dont know the trade off on this bike, and whats available for what in the aftermarket. The deal is beyond Schwinns offer as a XC usable frame starter.
I walk to school can you donate me a bicycle
Looks like it doesn't have a narrow wide chain ring, so I'm guessing that is why there is a cost cutting guide in place, not because of the clutch-less derailleur. Many people ride clutch-less but without a narrow wide and/OR guide it is almost a guarantee you'll drop a chain.
$5-10 from China
@@ryanp3907 Or $15 here in the US. I cannot imagine why Hyper didn't go with a NW. Cost increase, for them less than $5.
I have one of these bikes that I spent over $1k upgrading, thanks to you! I’m posting riding videos to show these bikes truly can be capable if you put the right parts on it!
Thanks Kev. Always learning. Still happy with my boundary. I broke the b screw and Pacific couldn't have been nicer. New derailer on the way.
Man the Schwinn Boundary is essentially the same bike with wider bars, shorter stem, stiffer fork, a tapered head tube and a clutched derailleur for the exact same price. I think it goes to the Boundary although the 9 speeds on the Hyper would be a nice upgrade from the Boundary. I would rather have the Schwinn Boundary.
I got ahold of hyper and had them send me the free wheel gear set. I have been gathering parts for a 1x conversion on my mongoose terrex. (It's my loaner) I haven't ridden any trails yet, but can't wait.
Schwinn came out swinging with a bat this year. Hyper, ehhh, let’s change a couple things.
@Ed No. They are long on "features" and low on quality.
You are NEVER going to get a mountain bike out of Walmart. They may look like mountain bikes, but they are not mountain bikes. They are good for short rides for an average height person on either asphalt or very hard packed dirt or hard packed dirt with gravel on it.
Schwinn does make some OK bikes, but they are not sold in Walmart. They are only available from their website or speciality Schwinn authorized resellers.
@@tarstarkusz You're a bit behind the ball on that. Schwinn's newest lineup of the new Al Comp, Boundary, Taff, and Auxum that they came out with this year are really kicking things in the pants, and Kev's said before that that the previous version of the Comp is one of the best budget mountain bikes out there, and that this new version is even better. Will they ride like an $800 bike? No. But then again most people can't actually afford that. Yeah, most of them are garbage, but a few are really starting to shine.
@@CPD0123a i agree but also have to disagree in some ways, i have my heart set on a specialized rockhopper comp 1x, but its $780 out the door. A descent fork for this bike starts at 169 before tax and shipping. But like Kev says not bad for a upgrade as you go i guess, ive had specialized frames before and iis a far stretch to even try to compare.
CPD0123a most people can’t afford an $800 bike? That is absurd. You can’t even get a real mountain bike for $800 Compared to a good quality mountain bike $800 is definitely affordable. Unless you don’t have a job.
@@tarstarkusz Most department store bikes are designed as 'XC' mountain bikes.
Can they handle the roughness of trail riding? Yes. Can the take beats better then high end bikes. Yes. Why? Department store bikes make their bikes 'smaller' and 'thin' looking, but their built thicker tubing, and abit heavier. Which gives them more rigidity then high end bikes that are built 'Larger' and 'thicker' But their tubing is built thinner, which makes them easily broken if crashed and being thinner walled, They can't handle the weight abuse that department store bikes. So you can't normally transform a high end mountain bike into a long hauler for cargo racking, etc. because of their designs they can't handle the extra load on the frame. But department ones being built smaller and thicker tube frames allow the bike to handle massive amount of stress on it's frame much better.
The components on department store bikes make be crap. But put abit of extra $$ and you got something that crushes a standard high end bike, and allows flexibily of using it for more then just a Mountain bike.
No thanks, I am happier with the new AL Comp I bought for my son. Everything on it works well so far. I only upgraded the stem, seat and pedals and I have a new tapered fork on the way that I got for cheap.
Because all the 2020 Schwinn models are unavailable, I'm starting a Project Explore! Ordered an air fork, cockpit stuff, and I've got a 27.5 wheelset kicking around I'm going to test out on it. Hopefully the longer travel fork will make up for the BB dropping from the smaller wheel size. Super stoked to see how it turns out!
I love the way you get your point across, short and sweet.
A good set of quick realese wheelset...
Tubeless...
A cheap nine speed XT groupset...
RST aerial fork or another one with lock out...
And we have a winner here.
Another great KevCentral video. If that bike was made with a tapered headtube the rest is upgradeable. Can't wait for the Carbon 29er X. Stay safe and blessed.
I am extremely happy with the progress that the big box bikes are making. The 1x and the 42t ring in the back are big improvements. I think those features alone will make a new riders experience dramatically better. That's a good thing for all of us who love to ride.
They cost $349 now due to inflation. Started with a Schwinn Taff 29 in. bike but couldn't get the gears to shift properly and for some reason with only 8 speeds it always seemed to be a half a gear off of what I wanted. It's possible that this was due to the Taff's shifting issue. Returned Taff and picked up a Hyper Explorer. After 1 ride so far, the gearing is much more comfortable. On my bike after adjusting the derailer travel limits I get all 9 gears and perfect one press shifting in both directions. The Explorer seems noticeably heavier when loading it onto the bike rack than the Taff which was surprisingly light. That said, given the perfect gearing the Hyper Explorer is a better bike for what I need.
Kevin just got one on your encouragement.
I'm grateful and loving it !
I'm breaking it in slowly.
It wasn't adjusted perfectly in store - close, but needed help !
Am I the only one who visits the tool aisle at WM to adjust their Bike & then test rides it in the Garden center ?
LOL...
I rode 10m trail & road ride today:
1st impressions:
Nicer quality & better design than expected @ modest $248 cost - better than my otherwise decent 2013 Genesis 29er:
Fork is tighter - no play upon braking very solid, yet nicely dampens impacts.
2x Discs are very powerful haul you down quick.
The 1x9 shifts perfectly breaking in nicely in these first 20 miles.
Seat is nice quality but too lightly padded to ride far without padded shorts.
I already swapped it for my preferred MTB saddle !
This frame is smallish. I'm 5'9" / 30" inseam & seatpost is almost all the way extended. A taller rider would certainly require a longer seatpost & longer stem.
Grips are ok but I've just ordered more comfortable lockon grips - in Blue Anodized finish, of course !
I think some Wake bars of about 740mm in Blue will be in order soon !
Tires, they're just ok.
I put some WTB Wolverine 2.2s on my Genesis 29er and they TRANSFORMED the bike.
I'm going to swap them into the Hyper & go Ghetto Split tube Tubeless as well - no more flats.
That should also give a more responsive lively ride feel, for this just like on the Genesis !
I hope you read this Kevin so you'll know how you helped me & it benefits others to give them confidence to GO FOR IT...all initial impressions are positive.
(Bolt on axles...meh...but it's why $248...)

Wal~Mart bikes are improving, but the bikes don’t quite get there. Still, it’s a trend. Let’s hope it continues.
I would love to see a good, serviceable commuter/city bike. And, yes; in a 1x. But Wal~Mart won’t be able to market the bike as 21 or 24 speed, despite it being better in every way.
Look online. They have some 700c 1x7 gentlemen’s bikes that will make great commuters. Just remember to go over every bit and bearing first and use real rim tape.
i bought my hyper and changed out the fork for an RS Dart SL that I laying around my garage. it weighed about 2 pounds less than the original. The falcon rear derailleur was bent into my spokes. Tomorrow I'm going to my LBS to have it swapped out for an old XTR rear (that was laying around my garage) along with a yellow RITCHEY 9 speed grip shifter. i think this bike will be fun.
ok, i went with a new alivio rear derailleur, kept the original shifter, and swapped out the bolt on axles for qrs. i think this bike is awesome for the price.
Was waiting all day for this
Great review kevin🙂
In this price range, consumers are going to be somewhat educated. With that said, Schwinn changed the game. You can get the Taff for an additional $50. I like the SNAFU eye candy and the Shimano shifter, but are those parts better? Just 6 months ago I would have said great, but now I'm saying "meh" - not terrible, but you can do better for a little bit more $$.
I own this bike and I am currently working on stage 3 upgrades. Awesome bike when you install the right components.
I didn't know it was possible to do a 9 speed freewheel. Big box bikes never cease to amaze!
What upgrades can I do to this bike? I just bought it and I'm excited about it. Please let me know
The bolt on wheels are there because the mayority of people that buy this type of bikes are not just going to use it for the trail, also for going to school, work, supermarket or other places where you have to leave the bike outside, so having quick release wheels it means you have to buy a chain or lock long enough to lock the wheels to, or more locks to do so. Because of that I consider bolt on wheels are the way to go in this price range.
PD: Sorry for some bad writing, english is not my first language.
In some ways correct. Mountain bikes are designed for fix axles to reduce less wheel removal. Quick release wheels were designed Only spec for Road bikes. How they became on mountain bikes was a large joke. Now they designed mountain bikes with thru-axles to fix a large prob normal quick release have.
Flex, and the tights aren't hard enough to take large beating. Quick release systems don't hold on the axles as normal screw axles or thru-axles do. So the idea of quick release on mountain bikes should've never been made because they were never designed for the ability to hold well.
I can understand making this a first bicycle purchase but if you want to do serious riding it should spur you on to save up for a more capable bike.
Thanks for sharing
If Hyper is going to go the 1×9 route, they might as well tack on an extra $50 to the price and use a cassette. I guess they were following Giant's eentry-level lineup and decided they were making a comeback. They're not - it's just cheaper.
The issue I always have with freewheels, and it's odd because I'm comparatively light at about 70kg, is the axle bending due to the lack of support at the drive side. Bent axles can damage the wheel bearings, the frame, the shifting and makes the overall ride very dangerous if the damage isn't quickly discovered and replaced.
Make no mistake, you *will* replace the rear axle several times if you continue to use that rear wheel, and you don't even have to ride all that hard for it to happen.
@@bobjenkins3rd replace the rear hub with a cassette hub, or replace the whole rear wheel with one that has a cassette spline if you're not in to wheel building. It's an added cost, but it will save you a lot of hassle in the long term.
I bought a brand new rear wheel for a bike I've now sold, but within a month the axle had bent from riding around the roads in town. I replaced the axle with the best I could find and the same thing happened.
Thanks you, i bought this bike because of all the information you offered.
The 8 speed 1x9. Sounds like a frustrating thing.

You should do an upgrade build on this hyper explorer!
Assuming that there isn't anything fundamentally wrong (frame alignment, bad derailleur) it sounds like they might've used brake housing. The wider inside channel can mess with shift precision. Or they just used junky cable/housing to get the same result. Still a really neat bike. Us big fella's consider those solid axles a plus.
Thanks for the video brother. Keep doing what you're doing!
Some observations about your video. You state that the bike has 11-42 tooth gearing. It's actually 14-42. I almost thought the smallest sprocket was an 11 too the way it's stamped, but manually counting teeth you'll realize it's a 14-tooth smallest sprocket. ;-) Also, my trigger shifter was set up pretty well from the store, but it did go out of whack as the cable got broke in. A quick cable adjustment was all it needed. Has shifted flawless through all 9 gears since. Drivetrain on this bike is pretty impressive to me. Falcon is not the British Falcon. The Falcon of Saker (named after a bird of prey) is a Taiwan company (now known as Falcon Power Co. LTD.) and officially licensed manufacturer of Shimano products as I understand it but only under the Falcon branding but is a direct bolt-on replacement. Lot of people seem to think Shimano stuff is made in Japan, actually, Shimano's 3 primary factories for their products are China, Malaysia and Singapore and it's primary bicycle factory is in China where it's been since 1992. ;-)
In my opinion, best bike I've seen at Walmart ever. Schwinn Taff is a joke. Schwinn Boundary is alright, but when I was given an opportunity to buy a Boundary or this Hyper, I chose the Hyper because it came all-around equipped so much better. Plus, who puts a quick release on an MTB?? That's like putting a Ferrari body on your Chevy 4x4. MTB's are the 4x4s of bicycling, and they're meant to be worked on and meant to have wrenches turned. There's plenty of fancy dancy Triumph and Peugeot bikes out there if you want QR luxury. But give me steak & potatoes bolt-on any day. Built to last, not look cool. If you want to look cool, get a cruiser bike. ;-)
Keep in mind some criteria you should consider when buying a bike on a budget. How it is initially kitted out is of primary importance if you're on a budget. I looked at the Ozone Fragment, a popular 29er and competitor to this Hyper. But the Fragment had "alloy" cranks that were mostly molded-on plastic. Plus plastic pedals. I'm 6' and 275+ pounds, Fragment would probably fail on the ride home after purchase. Plus the cheap handlebars, etc. Yet, the Fragment was $200. Hyper at $248. No way I could replace cranks, pedals, drivetrain set and handlebars for under $50 and bring it up to the level of what you get with the Hyper. Even when I compared it to the Boundary and had ample time to think about it. Boundary's 30T main sprocket vs Hyper's 32T main sprocket was a consideration as much as the Pro Rush (Schwinn in-house brand? Tourney equivalent) set vs the higher end Altus/Deore-level drivetrain on the Hyper. Plus Boundary's 7-speed vs Hyper's 9-speed. Since both bikes were priced the same in my area, it boiled down to personal preference and why I went with Hyper. I don't like QR on MTB's. If someone claims a 2-ounce small 15mm spanner is gonna weigh down their bike so much they can't go down a trail, they need to stick to road bikes. I'm sorry if I offend anyone by saying that, but with MTB it's all about durability. People talk their XT's and X-9's but then put a QR on that same bike? BLASPHEMY!! Spend hundreds on a drivetrain only to walk home due to a ten-cent axle.
I love my hydroform hyper 29 in mtb. I agree with the no 9th speed, I can live with that. I ride trails, but mainly a road bike. To work and back, ride on days off. Not too bad.
After Schwinn upped the big box game, Hyper probably has lots of catching up to do.
These aren't new bikes. Hyper canada has had these on their site for few years already. The only one possibly new is their Carbon X 29er. So you won't see anything 'big' till he shows that off.
Improving indeed, better then before
my previous project was a terrible Havoc. If i hadn't found my Dynacraft Gauntlet when I did, I garuntee I would have gone with this and went back to a hardtail. It looks amazing. Altus... not my favorite choice for shimano, but again not the worst either.
WHat I love about this the most is the paint. Look at your video in the low light and how on the trail the blue glows, my Gautnlet's paint does the same thing in low light, it's beautiful.
I bought the hyper explorer with dual suspesion after all your hydroform videos. Haven't had any issues with shifting gears like you did but I find the breaks very noisy (contaminated possibly).
I'm looking forward to your review on the dual suspension one and hope you somewhat compare to the hydroform.
Anyhow, thanks for the inspiration through your videos. I have been biking a lot for the past 2 weeks and feel great after not exercising for serveral years.
At a price point of $249, I'd like to see a shootout between this and the Schwinn Boundary!
frank hoxsey really don’t think it’s much competition. Yes, the schwinn has a 3x and the hyper has a 1x, but tbh I would go home with the Schwinn. I think it’s kinda personal preference tho.
@@evanmtb4511 The new boundary, not the old one.
Yesss good job Schwinn for not having a shimano derailleur on this bike hopefully this derailleur set up makes it on to more big box bikes.
Hyper makes this bike not Schwinn.
@@jrockthecasbah oh my bad lol
I have been so excited for this bike, mostly because of the 1x, but to be honest I’m a little disappointed that the wheels are bolt on and plastic brake levers. I don’t like it as much as I had hoped. Either way how about that new Yeti SB150’s Green color!!!!!🤤
Mostly acceptable as a starter bike. It's no Schwinn, though.
This looks like a good deal for $249, however I can testify from the experience of buying the Schwinn DBS 700c model that the bottom bracket is not very good. It's unfortunate that Schwinn would compromise on this item. The bottom bracket on my DBS was not very smooth turning and try as I might I could never adjust it so it ran very well and I have since replaced it with a sealed bottom bracket for $15, money well spent. Also, like several other less expensive bikes I have worked on, the pre-load on the front and rear axles is just too tight for my taste. You can always readjust it later if it gets too loose. I like the 9 speed derailleur, however I would certainly like for all 9 speeds to work.
This seems like a good option for someone who doesn't want to spend crazy like a specialized or GT schwinn may not have the same quality as my 1981 varsity but probably good.
Has anyone bought one at Walmart lately ? Our Walmart here in Lufkin Texas is completely sold out of all Adult & kids MTB bikes.
Academy Sports, same story !
Please let me know what Adult / Teen Bikes you see locally & where you're located.
Thumbs up will help us get reponses too - thanks y'all !
I don't know if you noticed - the front 1x chainring/crankset doesn't have narrow-wide teeth. I believe that's why there is a chain guide. I think if there was a chain guide because of the rd, hyper would've probably put it under the chainstay.
Has anyone else noticed the number of riders on Hyper bikes participating in Crankworx (Bas, Jordy and at one time, Zink)? I know Hyper has made their dirt jumper frame available ($369.99), but I have not seen a high end full suspension bike. It will be interesting to see if they begin to manufacturer more of their high end bikes.
You have lots of headset options for that bike. FSA, Black Ops, Origion8, Box and lots of others make sealed bearing press fit 1 1/8 headsets in lots of colors. That "pricey" Park Tool bearing press would come in handy.
Straight up, I'd get it for full price. I'm not very picky, in fact I actually like a lot of big box bikes (my only two bikes are current an upgraded Hyper Explorer 27.5 and a Mongoose Blackcomb I'll be overhauling), and all the parts on here are significant upgrades from what we've been seeing until now. I mean come on, a NINE SPEED freewheel, with a FORTY-TWO TOOTH low?! Heck, that alone is a MAJOR upgrade worth getting, at least in my opinion!
These bikes are good for street and light trails.I would buy one for general commuter use if they had my size but I wouldn't take it stock on singletrack. But it's a good entry point to get people outside and into shape
Schwinn still wins in this price range. Even if the Hyper had a tapered head tube, it still doesn’t compete with the Boundary or Taff’s out of the box running gear.
But I have to give Hyper this, it’s a good looking bike. The frame looks really cool.
Bought this bike visiting Phoenix for 4 days n returned it after my stay
Was nice to ride around n dialing in the read derailer on the fly was annoying. But easy
Not worth 250 for me but this might be perfect for someone else
Thanks for sharing
I got a hyper Urban
Cut down version of this really nice bike I did a hundred miles between Salt Lake City and State Line with 60 lb of gear think I might pick this one up I still got my eye on that mongoose long tail
This bike is pretty decent. My dad picked one up today. And while it's not like my trek or my scott. It does have good potential for flat riding and a decent saddle. Wish the tube for the seat and the fork were bigger so I can hook my dad up with some good shocks and dropper post. But the 29" weels are great and the Handel bars are ok. I completely hate the manual disk brake setup. It's weird not having hydrolic brakes. The bike does wheelies like a boss for the 41+ pound it weighs.
I don't mind the bolt on tires, it gives me a little more confidence when locking it up on the street. It makes it slightly less likely to come back to a stolen tire.
🤔 I never new that thieves walk around to target bike tires?...😳
I like it, probably would consider it, but reather see the $189 Aluminum Comp pricing, at least is was before they upped it to $224,
I think they're are pushing the price point to the upper range for a hard tail big box bike, after all its still a free wheel, and what they saved in not having a 3x in the front more than compensated for the minor cost increase for the 9 speed rear...
Just me opinion since you asked :) Thanks.
I think the chain guide's there since the front chain ring doesn't look like it's narrow wide. Bummed that the wheels are bolt on!
I don’t understand why they’d replace it? Same with nishiki and the Colorado comp people lived that bike so what do they do? Yeah let’s not make em anymore instead of making more wtf is that
Your serious? What is a Colorado frame style in terms of classification?
Wow. Until I saw this, I didn't even realize Falcon was still operating. I thought they disappeared in the late 90s. After this, I saw they still have patents as recently as 2017. They're the oldest Taiwanese drivetrain manufacturer that I know of (I'm sure I'm unaware of others, though), but their derailleurs, AFAIK fall somewhere between Tourney and Altus in terms of noise and chain slap... not sure about reliability since I've never had any rear mech from any brand fail on me before.
It's also only now that I came to learn that they developed the automatic drivetrain for that "Landrider" infomercial bike.
Unrelated note : the Saker Falcon is a pretty widespread species. You'll find them everywhere from China to Ethiopia.
Doesn't seem like a bad bike for the budget minded. You can always save up for improvements along the way. Excellent review
I've been watching your videos and others for about a month. I have zero experience and am old. I could afford to get a top model but I feel that would be a waste. Maybe I won't even like it. So far, my most likely choice is the new Schwinn Axum 29 that you reviewed. Thanks for your great (common sense) videos.
This now becomes the definition of entry level. Yes occasionally you find a $98 diamond (ok, cubic zirconia) like the Mongoose Hotshot, but really if they focus on products like the Hyper Explorer at a price point of $179 they will get that step up from something like the Hotshot. Then Schwinn becomes their high end.
Really nice color and the snafu branding definitely help the aesthetic. They probably skimped on brake levers and quick release axles to make room for the snafu branded items. I like it...
I would just like to point out that snafu is a high end bmx part company owned by hyper so its probably some good quality stuff
I have seen Snafu pedals on Walmart shelves (submitted pictures - not at my store ☹️) so it’s curious they didn’t include them here.
I ordered this bike, arriving in a few days! :) Looking to upgrade the fork immediately, I'm highly considering the SR SUNTOUR XCR 32 COIL 29" FORK, I realized I would have to also upgrade the front hub (just going to buy a new front wheel) and I'm guessing the headset too?? Do you have a headset recommendation for this bike that would also work with the fork I'm interested in?? Also any front wheel recommendations would be appreciated too.. big thanks in advance!!
Just a pair of QR skewers from Greatness at that price, but that is just my preference.
Although I was surprised about the lack of a cartridge bottom bracket....maybe this is ok?
That chain guide was genius for this price range.
Close, very close, but not cigar yet.
I could see me turning this into a Rigid MTB by swapping out the fork for a cheapo alixpress carbon fork. Heck put as thin as you can street tires on those rims and make it a hybrid.
Another bike ready to sell out because of the Kev-Effect.
Yeah it has a decent drive train for the price but would rather get a schwin then that
to write "Shimano Equipped on the seatstays when the only Shimano part are the Shifters is pretty bold.
😂 good point!
i got the bike recently and it doesnt have shimano anything on it or a sticker. its falcon, they must have changed it
I'm new to this looks like right up my alley for a beginner ..and down the road upgrades.. I like the boundary but the neon green not a fan of .. lol
I just returned the hyper dual shock explorer I loved it but the front sprocket been the first time I put it in the high gear. The downside is that the 2020 explores are so new that hyper doesn't have replacement parts from the manufacturer yet to warranty them yet. I tuck it back to Walmart and with the gift card ordered a new one hoping that it was a one off defect.
This bike is on Amazon today. $248 when you reviewed it 6 months ago. $424 today.
Hyper Bicycle Men's 29" Explorer Mountain Bike, Hard Tail, Blue is on sale at Walmart for 198 bones!
I think it's alright wish it had quick release hubs better brake levers and I and a little fatter steerer tube
Hey, I have been enjoying the videos for a while now. Good work. I don't know if you have looked into this kind of thing but there are headsets designed to fit a tapered 1.5" into a normal straight steerer tube. Cheers from Bulgaria!
Well I bought one and for the first 4 weeks I had no complaints then one day out on the trails what I thought might be my bottom bracket started making a horrible creaking sound. I took the bike in to the shop and they confirmed that it was my bottom bracket so it's now in the shop and I figured while its there I may as well get tires. Once I pick it up in a few days it should feel brand new again. It's a shame i only had the bike almost a month and it's already in the shop. I called hyper just to let them know and possibly send them a video followed by an email and after 2 weeks , crickets. Not a response via email or phone. It's a little disappointing because I really do like my bike i just wished i would have heard back from them
Yeah i had bottom bracket issues as well a month in went to bike shop upgraded and got a new rear wheel as well
Someone mentioned that hyper went under in another kevcentral video
I will never buy a bike with no quick release wheels. I've had my share of flat tires and being able to take my wheels of with out a tool is a must. Unless you ride your bike around the block then no biggie. I have a thousand bucks and I been looking for another bike.
The 9 speed wide range freewheel is interesting
I just bought this bike in Feb 2021 and they ditched the Shimano trigger shifter for a Falcon branded one. The even removed the "Shimano" text from the information card. The good news is that I haven't experienced any issue with getting into the lowest or highest gear. It goes smoothly into all the gears. Not sure if they changed anything else for 2021.
