Walmart bikes aren't that comfortable in comparison with actual branded stuff. Even my dad's 1300$ full suspension is really good for the price, and worked for his back problems

A fellow rider from Canada just commented somewhere here that they have a Hyper Viking Trail Pro available from Wal-Mart Canada. I just checked the Canadian website and the bike is in fact a Hydroform and is available in 29er and 27.5!! We need these 2 models brought to the US! Any Canadian friends want to hook us up?? I wouldn't mind having a Red Hydro!
I am no bicycle afficionado, but I think that this bike is a real step up from the typical trash that walmart puts on their floor. I found the shifting to be incredibly smooth and efficient and the brakes seemed to be adequate but nothing to brag about. Sure it still has cheap components but they are still a step or two up from the usual. It may not be the shiny new suprise of the year but it is still a worthwhile investment if $250 is all you can scrape up for this type of bike. As for a side by side comparison, all I have is the Trek Dual Sport 2 that I have been riding for a couple of years now, and I can say that based on that riding experience, I was not dissapointed by the Hyper. That is $750 vs $250, and in the realm of bikes that is still not really saying much. The average bike, that people who can afford to buy, is around $2500, I am estimating. Now, I have to add a disclaimer here: I only had this bike to ride for a few days so I cannot attest to it's durability. But I can say that I was sad to have to give it up. My 2 cents.
Man that color looks nice, it's a shame there's no tapered steerer or rear derailleur hanger though, wouldn't mind a bit higher price in exchange of those things.
If I had a choice I’d rather buy the Hydroform in its original offering and upgrade as you go to a 1x and all the rest. This is a step in the wrong direction.
Walmart was out of these I ended up getting a Schwinn Knowles 29 I am 52 going to be 53 6 foot tall and 222 pounds and I ride with my 7 year old grandson who lives with me. I really like watching KevCentral I have never owned a good bike was Sears back in the day. I am thinking about getting a Trek Marlin 7 In a couple years when I get my grandson to a point I feel I need something better. I would like to see a review on the Knowles I know it isn't great but not bad for a old guy starting to ride again.
Wow, what a poor replacement for the Hydroform, I was excited. Though unlikely, I hope Walmart changes out that rear triangle. I just might buy it anyways. Thanks for the video!
Saw one of these at Walmart for $140 due to or missing a pedal, seat, and seat-post. I figured I’d do some research before purchasing in case it’s junk but $140 for a a normally $250, I think I’ll get it.
I bought the Schwinn boundary this spring and I was almost in buyers remorse when I seen this bike. Now that I've seen the review of it I'm glad I bought the boundary. This does look like a fun bike for a old fat guy but not buying it until this fall if it goes on sale for under $200.
You know what, both bikes are pretty good for the price point. Decent quality for staying under prices you'd find used or beat up Diamondbacks and Specialized bikes. Though I will add that not being able to upgrade components is a big negative for me.
If the hydro form was upgraded and turned into a great bike. Then why can we not upgrade the explorer and make it a nicer bike? It essentially has a heavier rear triangle and that’s about it. Just helps you get into shape faster 😅
Only slightly off topic, the Super Walmart near me (Boynton Beach, FL) is 100% out of stock on all adult bikes - and they normally stock a huge amount - I'd guess never less than 30 or 40, and often close to 100. I think the pandemic has pushed a lot of people towards biking.
Absolutely it is driving people to bikes. Specifically affordable bikes. There are people I know that don’t have income to pay their bills, since their business shut down. The longer this strings out (hoping against reality that this subsided soon) the more likely it is we’ll see more people cycling that normally wouldn’t.
Marketing crew member: Hey, lets make it smaller and make it a 1x system? Project Manager: Yeeeaaaaah, corners will be cut. Keep the bike design, slack the headtube (68 degrees or so), make it a 1x and tapered like Schwinn. Keep it RED for 2020 model. INSTANT WIN.
I like where Kev said it's a 17 inch frame, to get a true reading you measure from the center of the crank spindle to the top of the top tube which I got yesterday at Wal-mart 13.5 inches. Because you don't measure center of the crank spindle to the very top of the seat tube which will give you an inaccurate reading for your size. So here I am 5' 8" and that frame fits me perfectly, like Kev said 6' and over it is going to be questionable keep that in mind. Not crazy about the steel swing arms and the plastic bushings which got me thinking on even to do a budget build seeing I have parts on stand by to do a convertion, but it does have potential but that price tag to me seam a little steep for a down graded version of the HH.
Have not bought it yet seeing I'm still on the fence. But if you are optimistic on doing an upgrade, by replacing the fork, cranks and bottom bracket, and post along with the rear shock, you shed at least 10 to 15 pounds, by doing the upgrades you would do on a hydro form. Different wheel sets would shed a little more, the only problem is that your not going to get around the steel swing linkage so that is something you have to live with.
I like the color.....and the 1x. The rest not so much. I think this is where you should tell them (hyper) to forget about the full suspension bikes and focus on making solid rideable hardtails. Schwinn is, and they are moving in the right direction. I think they listen to you.
And looked at this at Walmart I think the hardtail would version would be better sadly in my area they don't sell the hardtail version guess it's a Schwinn I'd like to have stayed with hyper or good bike
Spoke to the bike tech in Walmart near me they haven't sold neither of those bikes. Bike reminds me of the dreaded Pacific MTB that he body slammed in an earlier video.
Hey Kevin have you ever heard of the gravity fsx it is a budget bike on amazon for under $500 and it comes with full suspension, mechanical disk brakes, as well as some other cool features. Just a thought, but anyways love your content, keep up the great work!!
Love the red color, the slack front end and the 1x9...oh, and since I'm 5'8", that 17" frame is appealing. But, I am not in love with the cockpit and the rear triangle. I wonder if the rear triangle could be swapped with the one from the Hydroform and then the Kevcentral touch gets added to the rest... I also just thought of something. Hyper used this bike to replace the old Explorer. Maybe they will do the same with a new Hydrofrom?
Has anyone tried the swap for the Al rear triangle? Will it fix out of the box or does it require mods? I contacted Hyper to ask about a separate purchase of the Al triangle. No answer. So, I'm rebuilding one custom, ALL Aluminum. New Pivot, added the design from the Al version that connects the left and right pivot arms. This added rigidity to the swing arm. Redesigned and built two upper arms from the pivot to the rear axle. All from Aluminum. 50% + weight saving from the existing steel pivot and upper arm pieces In the process of rebuilding the lower portion but don't have access to Tig welder. Neighbor does Tig. We'll see. Not sure yet how much total weight I'll save. I know, a lot of effort but what else do you do during lockdown?
@@donaldrose8409 The version available for sale in Canada is all aluminum, but is for a 27.5 wheel. I just read an article that Hyper is about to release a new line of bikes soon, so maybe keep an eye out.
When KevCentral reviews bikes from Walmart there's a potential of increase purchases from consumers and possibility of bikes quickly selling out as was the case with the 2020 Boundary and Taff. I was just about to spend $500 on the blue Axum with the dropper but I checked one last time and I saw the 7 speed boundary available. Thanks for all the knowledge
Smaller frame takes away tall riders. 27.2 post on a mtb? Pass. Steel rear-end? What happened to the beloved Hydroform? Hopefully the Carbon X29 will be in stock for awhile. I have a Reba waiting for one. Well done on the Explorer series.
@6:07....you said you were going to release a video comparing the Hyper Hydroform & the Hyper Explorer DS. Am I blind & just don't see it listed? Or has it not been released? (there is ONE Explorer DS at a local Walmart & on the fence about it) Thanks for the videos! :)
while this doesnt seem very good for trail riding, what this does seem great for is an electric conversion, especially for someone who wants a cheap fs. for that, the steel rear triangle is actually a really good thing. the extra weight wont make much difference for the motor, but the steel will be much sturdier for holding the axle. frame size isnt as important for that either, youre not pedaling much. at least i dont...
That cherry red frame is the only good thing about this bike, Schwinn definitely proved how great a budget bike can be. Not sure why we still see bolt on wheels and skinny exposed headsets on bikes above $100. Atleast its not a quill stem!
I question how they do their sizing as I ride a 26" 17" frame and I'm 6 foot and I sit comfortably on it. In defense of the steel rear end and from my personal experience, I prefer steel on Full Suspension because I want the back end to stay down on the ground as it comes up with the frame shock, it keeps me planted and I Feel more comfortable.
The steel rear end has nothing to do with that- on hardtail bikes steel is more forgiving but on a full sus it’s just heavy. The back end staying on the ground is a result of your rear suspension- for example my bike has a carbon rear triangle which weighs about 2 pounds but because my shock is nice it’s incredibly planted.
@KevCentral They have this bike I saw on the Walmart website. It's the Huffy Oxide 20,24,26, and 27.5 full suspension mtb. It looks pretty nice but some of the components such as the derailleur made me wonder if they cheapest out on the bike. Its a brand new bike and I think you should check it out maybe....
Kev , 1- are you still willing to do the head to head comparison between the Hydroform and the X R Pro? 2- do you think the Hyper Explorer has a slacker head tube geometry than the Hydroform? 3- does it make sense to to sell the downgraded Explorer at a higher price than the Hydroform just by presenting it in 1x drivetrain? 4- speaking of modern geometry , do you think the Explorer in its stock form would outperform a stock XR Pro ? 5- everybody , I mean everybody is waiting for the head to head dogfight between the Hydroform and the X R Pro
This is so much worse than the Hydroform but it's on sale for $187 right now.. I'm half tempted to pick it up. I'm trying to decide between this and the HT version. If they were both in sale I'd go with the HT in a heartbeat but only the FS version is on sale. Decisions decisions. I couldn't tell if he was joking when he was saying that the bike if half ok or if he was serious. I dont think you can call it a FULL SUSPENSION bike, more like a waste of money. I just order a £4000 Canyon spectral cf 9.0 and I'm REALLY glad I got that instead of that excuse of bike
There is a very big difference in prices, the comparison is absurd.
Remember that "6' riders" come in all different proportions... I'm 6' but I only have a 30" inseam... a 17" frame is perfect for me.
i’m 5’5” and it’s a struggle to get on but it works rather nice considering its size... too bad it failed catastrophically on the second ride.
Looking forward to the New Carbon X 29er review
Thanks for your reviews. Before joining the army I had an old gt I rode everywhere, had no car. Now I'm looking for a bike to ride again but light trails and a lot of road. I'm a bigger guy, 6'2", 285. I have back issues so I don't want to spend a ton before I make sure I can handle the ride. I'll be following more trying to figure out the right bike for me.
Walmart bikes aren't that comfortable in comparison with actual branded stuff. Even my dad's 1300$ full suspension is really good for the price, and worked for his back problems
Altus parts? didn't see that coming...14-42 cassette? or freewheel? and yet the hydro-form was all aluminum WITH a hangar and was 199...This bike does not win any brownie points....my opinion is to pass on this bike...oh and I do have a hydro form....so the way i see it COMPARED to the hydroform... I say this is a fail... I do love the red color....KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK KEV!
The new run at Walmart has a different brand crank and an A4 derailleur. Still not a narrow wide though.
I recently got this bike i would recconebd not to get it because the gear shifter does not work
Hyper Bicycles Men's 29" Explorer Dual Suspension Mountain Bike is on sale at Walmart for 198 bones!
You know what, both bikes are pretty good for the price point. Decent quality for staying under prices you'd find used or beat up Diamondbacks and Specialized bikes. Though I will add that not being able to upgrade components is a big negative for me.
The main point is that the bike these replace was $49 less and was (aside from the drivetrain) a better bike.
Looks like a big step down from the hydro
Agreed
Spoke to the bike tech in Walmart near me they haven't sold neither of those bikes. Bike reminds me of the dreaded Pacific MTB that he body slammed in an earlier video.
Hey Kevin have you ever heard of the gravity fsx it is a budget bike on amazon for under $500 and it comes with full suspension, mechanical disk brakes, as well as some other cool features. Just a thought, but anyways love your content, keep up the great work!!
It sells for 187 bucks currently. Late October 2020
Still not a bad deal for under 200
Please keep the content coming I enjoy your videos, Especially now that I have no where to ride my bike.
I hope you kept the receipt for this one. You're glimg to need it
Love the red color, the slack front end and the 1x9...oh, and since I'm 5'8", that 17" frame is appealing.
How didnt the axle break?!!🙀
My brother took my Hyper viking trail pro just on a forest and sadly the rear axle broke.
Congrats on the new bike
@@KevCentral In speaking of! The 2020 Al Comp just came back in stock on Walmart's website. I snapped that up right quick.
Smaller frame takes away tall riders. 27.2 post on a mtb? Pass. Steel rear-end? What happened to the beloved Hydroform? Hopefully the Carbon X29 will be in stock for awhile. I have a Reba waiting for one. Well done on the Explorer series.
41 lbs. is the dealbreaker. Absurd.
@6:07....you said you were going to release a video comparing the Hyper Hydroform & the Hyper Explorer DS. Am I blind & just don't see it listed? Or has it not been released? (there is ONE Explorer DS at a local Walmart & on the fence about it)
Thanks for the videos! :)
while this doesnt seem very good for trail riding, what this does seem great for is an electric conversion, especially for someone who wants a cheap fs. for that, the steel rear triangle is actually a really good thing. the extra weight wont make much difference for the motor, but the steel will be much sturdier for holding the axle. frame size isnt as important for that either, youre not pedaling much. at least i dont...
That cherry red frame is the only good thing about this bike, Schwinn definitely proved how great a budget bike can be. Not sure why we still see bolt on wheels and skinny exposed headsets on bikes above $100. Atleast its not a quill stem!
Yeah but does schwinn even make a full suspension in this price range?
Exactly 100k when I click on this vid congrats bro
Kev...have you seen the new Hyper Viking Trail 29"?
Patiently waiting on the Hyper Carbon X video....especially since WallyWorld sold old ^^;
Your videos have the least dislikes to likes ratio I have ever seen! Great job!
Last hyper i had was junk and that was a couple years ago it was a full suspension bike as well
This is so much worse than the Hydroform.
I just built a Hydroform. Can't wait to take it out
@@phillipcowen4 What do you mean you "just built a hydroform"?
@@johndoe6940 I had a bike, stripped the old parts of and put on better components.
@@phillipcowen4 what bike are you using?
@@johndoe6940 ... a Hyper Hydroform
The rear end should stay on the ground assuming your rebound is set correctly. If the rebound is too fast it will “pogo stick” off the ground.
Just ordered this bike. I’m not going to trail it anyway just going to put on some street tires
It’s a shame because it’s actually a really good looking bike!
Hyper probably could have skipped that pretty red paint and spent the money on a few components. But then they wouldn't be so visually appealing.
With the steel rear end would you consider having one machined from aluminum or machining a spot for one from the steel one
I'm really anticipating the Hyper carbon x 29er review. I'm interested to see if it's worth the money.
Could you install a new rear shock? What size shock would fit?
Thanks this video and opening my eyes 👀 I found one in the marketplace but I remember you mentioned the steel rear frame. 🤟
You should take one of these budget full suspension bikes and upgrade it, to see how good it can get.
Check out my Project XR and Project Hydro playlists
@@KevCentral ok
@KevCentral They have this bike I saw on the Walmart website. It's the Huffy Oxide 20,24,26, and 27.5 full suspension mtb. It looks pretty nice but some of the components such as the derailleur made me wonder if they cheapest out on the bike. Its a brand new bike and I think you should check it out maybe....
Nice ! i have a dartmoor hornet in a similar colour . Cherry red . been a fan since about 2 years ago
Kev ,
1- are you still willing to do the head to head comparison between the Hydroform and the X R Pro?
2- do you think the Hyper Explorer has a slacker head tube geometry than the Hydroform?
3- does it make sense to to sell the downgraded Explorer at a higher price than the Hydroform just by presenting it in 1x drivetrain?
4- speaking of modern geometry , do you think the Explorer in its stock form would outperform a stock XR Pro ?
5- everybody , I mean everybody is waiting for the head to head dogfight between the Hydroform and the X R Pro
I’m new to this channel... Does he basically just review low priced bikes from Wal Mart or something? His videos are kinda nice to watch lol.
Im 5' 12', me nervous
Big thanks your ALL your video's
I vote for more slow mo filming. Thank you for the content
This is so much worse than the Hydroform but it's on sale for $187 right now.. I'm half tempted to pick it up. I'm trying to decide between this and the HT version. If they were both in sale I'd go with the HT in a heartbeat but only the FS version is on sale. Decisions decisions. Wanting to do a project bike, and who knows when the Boundary will be back in stock.
I have to say this chrom finish looks amazing
Love how you used a Nebo Slyde for a magnet lol
That would be ok but l went on a 16 mile ride n i was glad i was on a mid level bike and i did walk over one place cause suntour say their forks are crappy. Im pretty sore and wrecked once. Ive taken long rides on walmart bikes and needed tools
I bought a hydro form and it came in damaged, I returned it, and now it’s gone ;(
Both are currently 198.00 at Walmart today is June 11th 2024 I keep getting mixed reviews at least on the hardtail I'm just now studying the full suspension 41 lb wow it might still make a good commuter I've still got a while so it's more than likely a matter of what is available when I get paid I'll have three paydays next month the longer I wait that up the spending about I like the Schwinn signature bike the 27.5 Schwinn's standpoint currently 2:50 at Dick's sporting goods like I said it's a matter of what's on sale what I'm standing pat
I just bought one of that bike
Congrats!
May you please review the new hydroform next kevcentral?
I have an entire series on the Hydroform. Check my playlists.
The new one. I'm wondering if the altus deriluller is good or not
@@sirshrwa There is no new Hydroform. Kev said he grabbed one of the last runs of the Hydroform. He posted a few weeks ago that Wal-Mart showed stock and a few of us were able to score one.
These Explorers replaced the Hydro and it's beyond disappointing.....
@@simrigpc27b12 I live in Canada and we have a bike called the hyper viking trail pro. That bike is the hydroform but with a 1x9 with a altus derralier. It's full sus, replaceable derrailer, and much more. I didn't know that there was only the explorer in usa.
@@sirshrwa Well now I'm just jealous!! I think I'd like a Canadian bike please 😁
Can you please do a review of the 26' genesis v2100 full suspension. I bought the bike as my first mtb and I love it, the only problem is the front fork bottoms out easily. I have done small jumps on it and it has been fine I have had some small issues with the twist shifters though.. they are not very good but I think I am going to buy some trigger shifters and change them out. Also, I know almost nothing about mtb parts could someone recommend me some inexpensive beginner front forks. Thanks!
