- Sepsis is a dangerous condition which can occur when the body's normal response to a bacterial infection gets out of control. While it can happen in the elderly or as a secondary result of other illnesses, it can also occur in young, fit and otherwise healthy people. It is dangerous because its symptoms mimic flu but can worsen very quickly, and particularly, because the cascade nature of septic shock means that it can be very difficult to reverse the symptoms of sepsis once they have established. Patients can quickly reach a stage where no drug or other therapeutic intervention can prevent their decline.
