I had 2 prostate surgeries 4 months ago followed by Septic Shock 8 days later. The surgeries were a Sunday picnic compared to Septic Shock. It was a hell I hope I never see again. I still measure my blood oxygen and pulse per minute, and blood pressure 3 times a day.I consider myself a pretty tough guy. I still cry every day and I cant control it. I cried in the hospital several times a day every day. A nurse would walk in and say Good Morning and I would cry.

2 years old previously healthy, started 2 days ago with episode of vomiting, fever reaching 39Cº and decreased po intake abdominal pain and destention. Clinically:
    HR; 200
    RR 83
    Blood pressure:43/21
    Spo2 90%
    Temperature; 40.3 Cº
mottled skin, delayed capillary refill, very cold extremities
    Lethargic and decreased consciousness.
typical signs that indicates: baby is in a septic shock. We Intubate, insert central line and arterial line , insert an NG and foley, give runs of nss, take PAN cultures, start antibiotics and controll fever, start dopamine dripp then monitor. Very effective I always have such cases!!

Practicing RN here with 4 years experience on tele units. This is a very concise and informative video introduction to a HUGE topic in healthcare today. Prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of sepsis have been recognized by the Joint Commission as something that needs to be really focused on. If you feel at all weak in your education of "why" this is the video to watch. Excellent job! Good reinforcement for practicing RNs and good introduction for students and new RNs.

Great video. However, at 5:08, you need to change the info to read: PT, PTT & INR to "test", not "text" blood clotting ratios. Same thing for AST/ALT to "test", not "text" liver function.

I am 26 and i had a untreated undiagnosed kidney infection. i didnt realise i was septic. my bp was 90/60 summit. hr was 147. i do remember having urine output but cant recall amount. my resperation rate was 50+. i wasnt eating or drinking. i had a temperature and i was i was in a daydream, it felt like a daydream, my eye sight was affected and i felt ill. i foned the doctor to ask if i could take paracetamol and ibuprofen, i cant recall the conversation properly but as i was asking him if i can take both meds together, i remeber him saying to me 'u dont sound well' and started to ask me questions, i can vagualy remeber saying im okay can i take both together, then he goes 'im comming home' so within 7 minutes he was at my house and foned for a ambulance. he checked my bp, hr etc... and said i need to go in to hospital right now. i went hospital and they wouldnt let me get up out of bed to go to the toilet cuz they thaught i wud have a cardiac arrest as my heart-rate lying down was 147. I cant recall my treatment cuz i was out of it, all i do remember is hearing several doctors over my bed, saying 'we need to save her kidneys', when i felt better the next day i guess it was the next day, i realised that i had 2 needles in my arms and i was having IV antibiotics. i was in hospital 3 or 4 days. my family were there but were not explained how serious i was. its just hard to believe if i didnt make that call to the doctor or got sum1 else to do it, maybe it wud have been too late 4 me. Just thought my story maybe a source of education for others. Enjoy!!

      @jackking7055 Před 8 lety

+Aliya Hussain this kidney infection reoccured 3 times within the 2 years, although i was hospitialised again howver it was earlier cuz i was mur vigialant, the cause was using talc which was apparantly fake around the urethral area. It was hard to write this cuz it is personal but use it as education that products like talc and so on unless safe to use in the urethral area should be avoided and early detection of sepsis is must for survival. okay thanks for reading. good luck ppl.

Thank you Nurse Thomas!! I adore your love for teaching, a true virtue of a beautiful nurse. There has been many difficult days during clinical and class that I have came home and just watched your videos for inspiration!! The videos are so positive!! The knowledge is such a bonus!! Please keep posting! PS Does your friend have a website to order i.d. holders? I never realized how much what you wear can affect a patient until I worked as a CNA and my colorful/printed scrubs made someone smile or started a conversation. I understand facilities going to mandated uniforms, although it makes me sad! Anything to brighten up a patient's day or get a conversation started with someone who finds it hard to open up, is amazing!!!!!

I found this video hoping to more understand how I became septic . I spent almost 8 months in the hospital with sepsis. Thank goodness I don't recall the first 3 months. LOL Before that I spent 2 months in a rehab center. I left the nursing home / rehab center with a crushed disk and fractured spine. Does the bacteria have to come from outside the body or can u get it from a bad fall? I had the sepsis before the nursing home however. I tried something stupid an was given an IV into the bone, shin bone. Could that be the cause of my sepsis? I am disabled. The Doctors' thought I may have contracted sepsis at the horse barns. I just bought two horses a month before. My husband did the work since I was unable. I just brushed them. I hadn't even rode them. I could walk with a walker at this point. When I started to become more aware in the hospital, it was a battle just to learn how to fight the pain to feed myself. This is a nightmare still to this day that I live with. 3 yrs later I unable to walk and my arms I cant raise. I could write a book. LOL Only thing is, I cant figure how I managed to get sepsis without a wound to be found. I also have dogs, cats and a ferret. Maybe a scratch from one of them?Signed, Curious Ps: When I was unable to stand the pain in my back I called 911. Two medics met me at my door. They asked what was wrong. I told them I couldn't stand my back pain. They replied "you are standing" like they were questioning me. They then said to "go back to bed" and call my primary doctor tomorrow. They never even came within 10 feet of me. I remember turning back around and crying as I walked toward my bed. Nothing after I turned. My husband works graveyard. I'm lucky he came home for lunch that night. He found me unconscious across my bed. I had eliminated all over myself. I don't recall the next 3 months of my stay in the hospital. How fast does sepsis move within your body once it starts? PS's: Sorry for the novel...

I could not understand the words and Medication section you talk about sugar levels, large amount of ....?? sorry again I could not understand the word and in the same section ..sometimes up to 30mg/kg of normal saline bolus??... and lastly, sounds silly but what is the reportable temperature in celsius?. Hi K!
      Thanks a lot for noticing.
The correct answer for #18 is letter B..
and in #23 is letter D.
We are really sorry about that we might have missed clicking the right answer while making the questions.
But the rationale still points to the correct answer :).
We'll have it corrected right away.

Omg , I'm a phlebotomist. I work in a hospital . I'm interested in becoming a pediatric Nurse . I've never taken any nursing course of have any prior knowledge . Just what I see at work . I really don't have a liking for science . But I love psychology and kids and have a huge ❤️ & is very helpful by nature . *getting to my point . I answered every question RIGHT ! Which kind of surprised me , because I always score really high on critical thinking . However I have no knowledge , and this short video gave me what it was I needed to know . 😊But that brighten my day . Maybe I can get through nursing school. 💕💕 #not commenting for badge decor , just to let you know you have a new Sub and your video was damn helpful to my self esteem / confidence

Can you private message you? I survived Septic shock Aug 4, 2015 (complete organ failure/coma/vent) I went in for OP Lap gall bladder removal - they perforated my bowel and did not catch it - many times my kids told them something was wrong. I was confused made no sense (noted). They sent me home & my kids took me back to ER 14 hours later and within mins they had to revive me. Emergency surgery to save my ilife, another surgery to close wound, 4th surgery was another life saving one - abdominal wall reconstruction surgery / incisional hernia repair (it was stuck in between 2 places) ANYWAY would like to ask you a couple questions, let me know if that is ok.
