  • Sepsis kills 37,000 people in the UK every year, and many more worldwide, yet it can be difficult to differentiate from viral flu infections in the early stages. This film explains how you can spot the difference and when to call a doctor or go to hospital. If in doubt, seek medical advice. The symptoms of SEPSIS can be described like this:
    Severe shortness of breath
    Extremely cold hands or feet
    Palpitations or racing heart
    Slurred speech
    I've never felt so bad
    Shivering uncontrollably
If you are concerned, call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or go directly to A&E.

i had sepsis. mine moved very quick. i had the flu A, it turned into necrotizing pneumonia, kidney failure, lung failure and almost congestive heart failure. this was 6 months ago. everything escalated within first flu symptoms. within 24 hours it was necessary to put me in a medically induced coma. i was in that for 15 days. in the end all my organs came back, but i lost my left leg below the knee and my right foots toes....
I was not immunocompromised or anything, it just hit hard. i am lucky to be alive....

I believe there are thought to be immune system related genetic elements to susceptibility to sepsis too, so stay aware, having had it once.

I too had sepsis. A year ago, I was feeling sick. I went to the hospital and the doctor said I had a kidney infection. I went home and took my antibiotics. After a few days I felt better so I stupidly stopped the antibiotics.
A couple days later I was violently ill. Slept on the couch for a couple days. Just shivering constantly. I had heart palpitations as well. My friend came home and put me to bed. That night I had to army crawl to the bathroom. I was so out of it, that it didn't even strike me as odd when my legs no longer worked.
I just remember taking a lot of hot baths because of the chills and body aches. My friend came home the next day and picked me up and threw me into the car. I remember nothing after that.
Next thing I know I woke up in a hospital, they told me they needed to Intubate me. Then, lights out. Next thing I know, I'm in a different hospital. I was airlifted there they told me. I was on life support, kidney dialysis, and had all sorts of tubes and wires on and in me.
I was in and out of consciousness, and when I woke a couple weeks later, the doctors told me I was airlifted again, to a hospital 300 miles away.
I was put into a medically induced coma. I awoke 5 weeks later. When I woke up, I no longer had a tube in my mouth, but instead it was inserted into a tracheotostomy. I couldn't talk, or walk, or eat, or even write.
After relearning to do all the above, and several weeks of rehabilitation, I was released.
All in all, I had complete septic shock, multi-system organ failure, respiratory failure, heart failure, pneumonia and endocarditis (infection of the heart).
Sepsis is no joke! Glad to be alive!

The onset of bacterial sepsis is astonishing. It comes it seems out of nowhere and the symptoms abbreviated to the word sepsis are wholly appropriate. There are other forms of sepsis such as neutropenic with chemotherapy often a cause. I have had both. I was hospitalised for 3 weeks with neutropenic sepsis but felt much more ill with bacterial sepsis. In this time of covid and the pressure on the NHS it would have been easy to have left it, putting it down to a passing infection. Thankfully working for a doctor I was told to call the emergency services at once and within two hours I was in hospital hooked up to intravenous antibiotics which could well have saved my life.

Within a very short time I was on the operating table having a stent fitted. I was struck down by sepsis in August this year. it was so rapid, I first started to feel achy, hot and cold, with my hands and feet freezing (in August!). within in no time I was drowsey and wanting to sleep. I started to vomit, that should have alarmed me as I haven't been sick in over 40 years, but by now I wasn't fully with it but no one realised how I'll I was until I passed out. This was lucky for me because I would have probably gone to sleep and not woken up because my blood pressure had dropped and my internal organs were packing in. My husband called for the paramedics and luckily they quickly realised what was wrong. I was rushed into high dependency then into Intensive Care at the BRI at Bristol. By now I had lost use in my hands and legs, I thought I was going to be paralysed. I had to undergo a hideous procedure whereby they cut into my neck and pushed two lines into my heart. But it saved me together with the correct antibiotics. I can honestly say I have never felt so Ill and I did realise I was very close to death and remember thinking "gosh I didn't think it was going to end like this, and all in under 24 hours". The care I received was second to none and I and my family will be forever grateful for that the team at the BRI did for me.
Its December now and I have recovered so very well; I have my days of reflection but luckily I have not suffered depression which is very common when someone has had a near death episode. I was so weak for sometime but my energy levels are coming back and I am so grateful. I do still get absolutely drained, usually when I least expect it! Also concentration and memory have suffered but they are getting better and if that's all I have to worry about I can live with that! I didn't lose any limbs and I am almost back to my old self. Please, please take notice of what SEPSIS means, what each letter stands for, it may save your or someone you know from dying or from life changing effects.
S for severe shortness of breath
E for extremely cold hands and feet
    P for palpitations
    S for slurred speech
I for I have never felt so bad
    S for shivering uncontrollably
I sincerely hope you never have to go through this but a word of advice if you start feeling ill with flu symptoms that progress to any of the above DON'T RING YOUR GP, call the paramedics or get someone to get you to A and E, every hour counts and the sooner you start having the right medication the better chance you have.
Thank you again to the BRI, BRISTOL.

I am so sorry. My mother passed away from sepsis. She went into the hospital on Jan 27,2020 with sepsis in her foot. The podiatrist did surgery on Friday and left the wound open over the weekend so it could heal. Monday when he came and saw her at hospital said it was looking very good and she was on IVs for sepsis. Then an issue came up about her gi system. So the stomach Dr came and talked to me and my 2 sisters and said if she does not have this surgery she will die and her sepsis was supposedly gone. The problem came because all 3 of us (my mother's daughters ) lived in different states. And on Jan 27,2020 my older sister received a phone call that my father when he woke up started vomiting. My parents were divorced. The care taker called his primary physician and he said to get an ambulance. My father had a severe brain hemorrhage. And on the same day my mother developed sepsis. Both of our parents were in different hospitals in ICU. My older sister flew to Knoxville TN and my little sister who lived in Myrtle beach drove to Fayetteville NC to get me and drive to Knoxville. We were in complete shock. A day that we will never forget. My father was at UT hospital in the Neurology ICU and he was a like a vegetable. He could see us but could not talk or anything. My mother had surgery in her foot where the sepsis came from. A few days later the Doctor at UT hospital told us that:our father would more than likely be this way (97 percent sure). We knew daddy would not like to live like this in a nursing home and a vegetable so we had him taken off life support he passed on Feb 2,2020. His burial service was for Thursday. Now back to my mother. She seemed to be doing great. Her foot looked alit better. Then all the sudden a doctor discussed to us about her stomach being swollen and that she needed surgery and if not she will die (Wed). My mother agreed for the surgery. But she kept complaining that her back was killing her and she needed meds. They did at 1st have her in a low dose of morphine and then down to Percocet. Her surgery was for Thursday the day we were burying our father. There was a 50/50 chance our mother would survive. After the funeral services we had to drive to nomas hospital. She made it. She now had one of those bags. The hospital decided she could now go to therapy/rehab that was adjoined (Tennova North Knoxville TN) and therapy was Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic) which was connected. The Dr told us we could go back to our homes and she will be fine. Her only living relative was her brother and she was there alot. Anyway, 2 or 3 days later she went down hill. Could never do therapy because her back was killing her. She then list most of her hearing and then she was delicious. I went to Knoxville 1st week of March 2020. I was appalled. Before I even got off the elevator to her floor I could here her screaming in pain. It went on and on. I could not have a conversation with her because of pain. And I had to put my lips to her ear so she could hear me. My uncle was there every day for at least 10 hrs . Never did he see 1 Dr. I talked to her nurse and she said we are giving her a tramadol every 6 hrs. I told her don't bother with tramadol. I explained to her that my mother was running a fever and low BP and was disoriented and confused and was loosing her hearing and her back was killing her. She never left rehab room to be put back in ICU hospital. They never took her out of the room for MRI X-rays nothing. They waited about 2 1/2 weeks and started giving her antibiotic iv for sepsis. The sepsis was in her spine. If they had took action immediately this would not happened. She died. I want to sue the hospital and KOC so bad. But we all live in different states. So we lost both our parents in almost 2 months. Never ever go to Tennova North Knoxville TN. U can check in but u will never check out. This could and should have been prevented. It would had be easy to sue them if one of us lived in Knoxville😢

I feel like the aftermath of a great storm… I’ve lost no limbs.. thank God… but still getting so sick at times unable to move off my couch but drs saying they can’t find anything wrong…so weak at times with slurred speech… I’ve read that the drs can give an antibiotic that will prevent reoccurring infections ( I get UTI’s a lot & pneumonia)… I guess you have to ask for it cause I haven’t got it yet….

Three years ago I felt very ill I was vomiting continually I became confused my palor deathly white my husband dialled 999 the ambulance arrived quickly I have no recollection of the trip in the ambulance or the next five days till I woke up in high dependency I am very lucky I was diagnosed and treated for sepsis and the only thing I am left with is are holes in what was a good memory it proves that early diagnosis is paramount.

Last Friday I just felt off. I started shivering a lot. I decided to take a hot shower and go to bed. I was under the covers, shaking and shivering for hours. My husband got in late from work and I was in and out of consciousness. I woke up in the middle of the night ad started vomiting. I couldn't put thoughts together. My brain felt confused. My husband took me to the ER which thankfully is a mile from our house. My temperature was 104. I was so completely out of it. I had a diagnosis within the first 30 minutes and I was started on antibiotics and fluids right away.
Turns out I had cellulitis on my left leg which led to sepsis. I thought I was going to die.

I've had sepsis about 7 times in one year cause I had certain devices that kept me alive luckily these were reversed and I live a rather normal and much healthier life now. I still seem to fall victim to it tho. And the last time about a month and a half ago I became ill with sepsis through an unidentified infection. It progressed so fast It's frightening. They put me on wide dosages of antibiotics and that helped on average I spend on the bare minimum 2 weeks in the hospital. Ive needed a few times when this happened a vasopressor I believe its called, well it was a drug given intravenously in my case for several days to keep my heart in check cause my pulse dropped to a dangerous low. At this point I've experienced so many different symptoms, but I was just wondering about the atrocious pain that I feel sometimes where it gets so bad that I could barely move I have a high pain tolerance usually so for me to say it was unbearable def shows a lot. So I wanted to state that I do have a lot of hardware put in, do you think that I could be extra sensitive to pain when I get Sepsis due to the hardware ? Cause all my bones and areas with hardware hurts unbearably. Btw all this started with an attack I sustained as a pedestrian crossing the street, I have been fighting for years had too many surgeries but at last I'm lucky enough to be able to see an end and new begginings health wise. I know there's not much to do to prevent Sepsis other than being careful to not get an infection but if there's any other advice on what I can do to prevent this I would really really appreciate anyone's help. Overall I have a pretty good understanding of how to fight it but of course I'd march my ass to a hospital asap if I were to contract it again.

One evening a few weeks ago I felt like I had to throw up. I wasn't nauseated at all. I was sitting on my bed, and thankfully I had a few of those blue spit up bags close. I barfed about 6 times. Still no nausea. Slept well for about 6 hours. I knew my neck had been painful for at least 2 weeks. Next thing I know, I was in the hospital. I don't remember h ow I got there. I was told my husband called my sister and she took me to the HOSPITAL AND ADMITTED. I was told I had a fever of 103. I still didn't feel sick. The doctor came in to tell me I had the flu....I had the flu vaccine several weeks earlier. I was in over night and sent home the next afternoon. No feeling sick at all. I had a bad week the last week May 2017. In hospital 7 days and 'they" didn't think I'd make it. I had sepsis through out my entire body...kidneys, heart, lungs..everywhere. I didn't realize how sick I was. That was about 8 months ago...?What next?
