On today's Explained, we take a look at the proposed merger between the Dutch Eredivisie and Belgian Pro League, and discuss whether this could be the first of many cross-national leagues in world football!
On the 16th March, the Belgian Pro League confirmed that 25 of the country’s biggest football clubs had voted unanimously in favour of exploring the possibility of establishing the BeNeLiga, which would see the best sides from Belgium and the Netherlands come together to form a new, cross-border league.
While Dutch clubs are yet to hold such a vote, there have been discussions since 2019 between six clubs from the Eredivisie and five from the Pro League over the possible merger, and if it becomes a reality, it will hold big ramifications for football in the region and beyond. It would likely see the dissolvement of the Eredivisie, which has run since 1956, and the Pro League, which was established in 1895, bringing an end to over a century of footballing tradition in both countries - a situation many fans don’t want to see happen.
However, it also promises a higher quality, more competitive league, in doing so bringing in more money through television revenue, and with the hope that clubs like Ajax, PSV and Club Brugge will challenge more consistently in Europe, having seen their standing in continental competition decline in the decades since the establishment of the Champions League. It’s also been seen as a reaction to the looming spectre of a European Super League, and the drastic changes to the Champions League which come into effect from 2024.
But how would the BeNeLiga work? Is it really needed? And could this be the first of many cross-national leagues? Let’s find out..

bad for the lower table sides in either country, they would be pushed down far into the second/third league. On the other hand, neither leagues are as good as the national team so it would definitely form a more competitive group

@@hsjfhsfdnmbf6452 not necessarily, there is a major lack of professional teams in both Belgium and The Netherlands. The spaces in the second tear are filled with b teams from the big clubs. This is a big problem because they can't compete with professional teams and thus make the second tear weaker. It woud also allow these second tear teams to grow because if they win their respective national league they would feature in the lucrative BeNeLiga and make more money. They could also bargain for financial support from the BeNeLiga (especially Dutch smaller clubs because they have more voting power). I think the BeNeLiga would be beneficial for every club (provided it's well organized) but there are still many things that need to be clarify like the amount European tickets and regulations regarding transfers etc.

What about a concept like in the MLS with 2 divisions? You could actually just take both leagues (18 teams each) and just make them into 2 divisions. A Dutch and Belgian division. They’d all play against the teams in their division once and half the teams of the other division (randomly chosen) also once. So 26 matches in total if I’m not being stupid. Home and away matches would just change every season so for example if Ajax plays against PSV in one season at home, the following season they’d play at PSV. At the end of the season the top 8/4 teams of both divisions would play in a playoff format until the ultimate champion is decided in a final. So at the end you’d have 30/28 matches in total which will still result in fit teams, able to compete international as well as having both leagues remaining with all 36 teams and still somehow having the feeling of playing in the eredivisie/Jupiter pro league

Football historians: How was East German teams incorporated in Bundesliga?
About Regional leagues: they seems as a good idea, especially if national leagues in region are weak. Like Scandinavia, Baltic or even some sort of Central Europe (like Poland+Czechia+Slovakia), or Alpine league (Switzerland+Austria+Lichtenstein and throw in one club from Sanmarino to have more competitive league for those small countries). Only problem is that there should be at least two tier system for geographic leagues.
Maybe second tier could be played inside nations and then play-off system to save costs.

  • @orlandotrustfullandhiscosm4110

Im usually against the modernization of football. But i do think this is the natural way to go as regards Holland and Belgium at least. It would add a lot more interest amongst these kind of teams and help strengthen clubs what with the increased revenue.
Hopefully it would mean the likes of traditional European giants such as Ajax would gain a foothold in European competition and be able to retain a few of their better players for a while longer.
Maybe this will sparkle interest in the likes of Norway and Denmark to combine and create a 'Normark' or 'Denway' league? Perhaps Portuguese giants Benfica, Porto and Sporting will put in a request to form a Iberian league with Spain?
I personally would like to see traditional big names like Ajax and Benfica having the ability to compete more with the clubs from the big 5 nations.
I think it's imperative to have at least some sense of history and tradition by not only seeking to preserve clubs like the aforementioned, but to help give them a leg up as well.
For every Man City, PSG, Chelsea and RB Leipzig we need to have an Ajax, Benfica, Celtic and a Leeds Utd.

Great comment, but I have one thing I’d like to point out, and that is that these merger leagues are still not going to get any near the top 4 leagues financially. A few percentages closer perhaps, but nothing that’d ultimately change anything in European football. You mention a Denway league, I see. The problem is that Danish clubs are far better off financially compared to both Norwegian clubs but also Swedish clubs. If a Scandinavian league was founded there’d be a about 4 title contenders and 3 of them would be from Denmark and one would be from Sweden (Malmø). There’d also be too much resistance for it to take off. Sure, foreign armchair viewers who never watch football live, might think it’s ideal, but I truly doubt us natives would let it slide. Just my adding my 2 cents.

@@TheCDR8Gaming I agree a few % closer but not close enough to genuinely compete. But whilst the big 5 leagues pull away ever more from the rest of Europe, i still think its important to at least try something new and enterprising to create a little more interest within these leagues. Even taking the big 5 leagues out of the equation, the time has come where a Beneliga would be a natural progression.
I didnt know that Danish clubs are far better off financially than those of Norway but if they could bridge that gap i think Norway and Denmark should definantly combine in the near future.
I didnt mention Sweden because i consider the Allsvenskan to be a strong and vibrant enough league to thrive on its own. Sure its not a powerhouse of a league but its still pretty competitive, even if Swedish clubs dont go far in Europe.

@@orlandotrustfullandhiscosm4110 Thanks for the reply. It's nice to have nuanced debate on CZcams for once. Sorry for my very long reply, but this is a topic that interests me quite a bit.
Whether those few percentages are worth reaching out for is a matter of perspective. I'd say they aren't. Why, you might ask.
Well, while the top 4 leagues have already taken off from the runway a long time ago, Scandinavian leagues haven't even left the gate yet - financially speaking. Why bother risking bankrupting multiple midtable/bottomtable clubs just so that we could get 2 or 3 spots further up in the UEFA ranking? Football, imo, is not only an entertainment product. Lots of clubs also act as social and cultural institutions in the local community. Mine does for certain, and they'd definitely risk bankruptcy if they didn't make this Denway League. Unless, the tv revenue from the Denway League would be well distributed to the two domestic divisions. But that would crush the whole point of the Denway League.
"I didnt mention Sweden because i consider the Allsvenskan to be a strong and vibrant enough league to thrive on its own."
What do you base that on? Other than Malmø, clubs aren't better of financially than those of Norway. If anything, it'd make more sense to merge Eliteserien and Allsvenskan.
"Even taking the big 5 leagues out of the equation, the time has come where a Beneliga would be a natural progression."
Sure, from a fully capitalistic perspective, it is definitely the natural progression. But unregulated hyper capitalism hasn't worked for those at the bottom of the society. Look at the US. Look at UEFA. Smaller clubs that also have play a role in the local community would in worst case disappear from pro football. Is this what we want? Y'know, football is after all more than a TV product.
I don't believe that merging leagues is the way to go. Instead, I'd like to see some heavy regulation done by UEFA. Ideally a salary cap could help reducing super clubs like PSG, Bayern, City etc. although UEFA would have trouble with the EU court, if they were to enforce it (hint: they won't).
There's already plenty of money in European football. But the money needs to be distributed much better. Otherwise, football as we know it - will be a thing of the past. :-)

      @orlandotrustfullandhiscosm4110 Před 3 lety

@@TheCDR8Gaming My crikey, it is a long reply indeed!
First off i do agree that its imperative to ensure the smaller clubs and lower leagues not only survive but thrive.
If these ventures meant putting the existence of 'lesser clubs' at risk then i certainly would promote merger leagues.
As with a lot business models, (and football is a business, whether we like it or not) the key is to make decent money without completely anihilating the small people.
As purely a spectacle the Beneliga and the Denway league would pique a lot more interest from any football fan. If money was no obstacle and the sustainability of smaller clubs wasnt put under threat then of course, Rosenborg, Molde, FC Copenhagen and Brondby all in the same league would be far more engaging than as the Norweigian and Danish leagues currently stand.
I think Norway and Belgium are quite similar cases in which they would harbour more interest in combining with Denmark and Holland, rather than the other way round.
So as i say, taking the financial issues out of the equation, these combination leagues make sense both sporting wise and geographically.
Im certainly no expert on the Allsvenskan but if you take a look at the past 5 or 6 seasons there has been a decent amount of variations in league positions for numerous teams.
2015 Champions IFK Norrkoping went on to finish 3rd, 6th, 2nd, 5th and 6th in the past 5 seasons.
      IFK Goteborg who finished 2nd in 2015 went on to finish 4th, 10th, 11th, 7th and 12th
      AIK Solna finished 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 4th and 9th
      IF Elfsborg finished 4th 5th 8th 12th 8th and 2nd
      Malmo FF finished 5th 1st 1st 3rd 2nd and 1st
      Djugardens IF finished 6th 7th 3rd 7th 1st and 4th
      Hammarby IF finished 11th 11th 9th 4th 3rd and 8th
If that aint a vibrant and competitive league i don't know what is. OK, it may not be a 'strong' league but it certainly is an interesting league.
Even though Malmo FF are the strongest emerging club in Sweden, their dominance isnt as if they have been far and away the best club by far in the way Ajax and PSV dominate their league, Anderlecht and Club Brugge in Belgium and the way Rosenborg and Molde tend to dominate the Tippeligaen.
I bet even the likes of Feyenoord and Sporting Lisbon get fed up of finishing top 3 or 4 with the odd Championship title win here and there. So it wouldnt just be more interesting to see who would win a Beneliga or Denway league title but the emerging close rivalries that could potentially be created.
A Feyenoord-Anderlecht or a Rosenborg-Copenhagen fixture would be something im sure all footy fans would like to see every season.
I wont bore you with extra things to say. Thanks anyway for the detailed reply and i hope you appreciate my in-depth response.
      Take care.

Instead of making a league, why not make it a tournament-like competition? All 18 teams from both domestic leagues playing in knock out rounds with double fixtures. It would be 7 games max for teams that reach the final, give a boost in revenue for all teams, and theoretically make both leagues more competitive because of the increase in revenue. It isn't exactly a merger, but could become the start of one. Think of the rivalry that can start between the top clubs in each league. Plus, I don't think any club would dismiss the opportunity for more silverware

This is 100% a good idea for football in the Low Countries. This would allow the BeNeLiga to at least start knocking on the Big 5's doorsteps. With good development and investment, it could easily turn Europe into the "Big 6" Leagues. This would also give the big teams like Ajax more competition domestically to help them improve their quality and ability to keep talent when it came time to compete in Europe. Considering this would also act as its own publicity since it's such a cool, new change, I'd also wager that the hype alone will drive up profits as the league gets started. Speaking as an Ajax supporter I think it should happen, most clubs already have the hardest difficulty to present an mandatory annual budget. If it wasnt due to the current tv deal most of the Dutch clubs would have gone bankrupt in 2012. And in all these years the financial situation has become worse, Ajax of course is the financial most stable and towers lightt years above the rest, but clubs like PSV, AZ, Vitesse, SC Heerenveen, FC Groningen, FC Utrecht still have some potential, Feyenoord is a sleeping gigiant but that club has been mismanaged for several decades, while they should be the second club (though they are in size).
The second division is even in a worse state, in 2012 I forgot who it was but the tv rights holder back than didnt wanted to pay more than they already did which, which would have ment the end of most clubs in the second divison. Intially FOX had no interest but changed its mind but demanded that the youth teams from the Dutch traditional topclubs Ajax, PSV en Feyenoord were allowed into the second division. With the odd thing that they could win the league but couldnt promote to first league. A Bena League could work since most clubs barely have any serious future perspective and survive from season to season, and its also obvious Ajax and PSV need more weekly resistence.
If Dutch football doesnt act the league will die anyways due to the lack of money, so this is something which will happen. Deloite & Touch is as we speaking working a full buisnessplan for a merger league, and it will be for the better cause for years the clubs with no future perspective what so ever are holding back the clubs who still have perspective. And have been dragging these clubs with them, plus the clubs who dont go over to the first division of the new league might have a better perspective in a new second divison than the one they are in currently. The bigggest obsticles are of course money and emotions, within1 or 2 years current tv deals ends and Ajax already has said arent going to sell their rights collectively again, which is a powerful tool to leverage.

I think there’s an easier but sly way Celtic and the ’gers can get into the English premier league. Buy a team in England in ideal location at as cheap a price as possible that won’t cost a fortune to raise up through the leagues. Set up a youth academy to start cranking out talent to either sell off or keep if they’re looking like they have high potential.
Naturally they’d wanna rebrand them as town/area name Celtic or Rangers with identical club crests. If it worked and the English division was to become self sustaining then it could rise through the ranks borrowing talent from the parent club until the team is in the prem when the best players can make their way over from Glasgow into the more lucrative EPL. The Glasgow team could keep going in parallel.
But of course the better way to do it would be for both leagues to create a merged league and make sure it combines the European competition slots for both countries. There are already enough teams jockeying for top 7 they don’t need or want wealthy scotsmen cutting their lunch
