How To Make A Chunky Knit Blanket | Tips & Tricks For Beginners!

IMPORTANT: Don't forget to knot the yarn at BOTH ends of the blanket (I modeled the ending knot) so that it doesn't unravel in the wash. Also, if you're on Instagram please tag me in your blanket photos or send a picture over via messages! I'd love to see your final product 😊 📸
-Still not sure what size to make your blanket? Here are some general sizes that I often use as a starting guide. For a small lap throw or blanket that you just want to display, 30 x 50. For a medium blanket that you plan to curl up with on the couch, 40 x 60 (this is what I typically make). For a Queen sized throw that you want to drape at the end of your bed, 50 x 70.
-Wondering how much yarn you should use? For most medium sized blankets I use around 6-7 bundles of yarn. For Queen sized blankets I've used up to 8 and 1/2. It often depends on how tight or loose you make your loops, but when in doubt, buy more than you need and return what you don't use! You definitely don't want to be stuck with an unfinished blanket if your color of yarn sells out....I've been there. It's sad. And then you get desperate and drive way too far to another Michaels to get more yarn...

Hi friends! Don't forget to click 'Show more' in the description box up above. Lots of FAQs can be answered there! I'm so glad you're finding the tutorial to be helpful. Have fun creating! 🥰
Thank you so much
It's beautiful and easy to do. It makes me feel relax and rewarding.
Thank you so much. My daughter and I are going to have a little business from our homes and work together and sell on line. I just started learning. She taught herself how to do this. I am disabled and have a lot more time than she does so I If I can learn how to do this I can make more blankets than she does because she has a full-time job plus is going to school online. I have never been good at anything like this before and would have never even attempted it
She is the one that came to me and asked me if I would like to do this I have anxiety disorders and so does she So this should be a great way to bond with her for both of us to relax Have fun and eventually make some money to help out. She showed me how to do it and is helping me with all the materials and without a video like yours I could not do this alone. I'm going to be a little bit slow to start because I'm 54 years old never having done this before and have had problems with cognitive ADHD and the such. I don't believe that old dogs can't learn new tricks. So this is great. Your blankets are beautiful I love the way you take your time and you show your work and your tips are awesome too. ❤
could you please tell me where to find this type of yarn in amazon or in flipkart???
Hi how many rolls of yarn for that blanket ty , love it ❤❤❤❤❤
Ok I have watched like 5 tutorials before this one and they were not clear and only showed thinks once, yours helped me so so sooo much because before this tutorial I could not figure out with the other ones how you start the first row! Thank you so much for making this it helped so much!😁
Same some aren’t detailed and while the video idea from someone else was good the tutorial part of the other video fell short, this video is amazing
Same all like 10 that I watched they just said “just put this string and this one and walah” like I can’t go that fast
I feel the same. Great instructor
Thank you I’ve seen other videos but I think This one is really good
Absolutely! I just made a comment about the same thing! Just an FYI for those of you who may not know how to change the speed of your video (ie to slow it down), if you click on the settings icon (looks like a gear) and then click on playback speed, you can make it faster or slower. I have to make mine slower with tutorials and it makes me have to rewind less. GREAT VIDEO!
The BEST tutorial for beginners. Made my first chunky blanket today. So fun!
Have watched at least half a dozen tutorials and YOURS is the only one that made any sense at all. Following your directions was easy and I picked right up on it. I had tried numerous times to start a blanket and never was able until I ran across your instructions. Thank you for being clear and precise in your instructions. I'm well on my way to my first blanket!! With gratitude, Linda Dill
I am a knitter but if I wasn’t, I think would find your tutorial so easy to follow! I would love to find a crochet tutorial this good!! Well done and many thanks.
THANK YOU! This is the first tutorial that makes sense! All others pale in comparison! I made a blanket and I can’t even sew on a button! 🙏🏻😁
I did my own blanket with the help of your video, Thank you! It was so much fun and you made it so easy!
My daughter in law asked for a chunky blanket for Christmas. I can crochet so thought I would try that. I looked at lots of tutorials and was frustrated. Then I looked at "finger crocheting" tutorials and finally I found this. Your explanation is so clear and the helpful things you added have been a true blessing. It seems simple but just moving the yarn from one side to another has been tremendously helpful. Thank you so very much!
This is the best tutorial I've seen so far and makes me feel confident enough to try this at home on my own
Your tutorial is easy to understand, and really well done! I’ve never knitted or crocheted before, and I made a beautiful blanket in 1 day. Thank-you for a great beginners video!
Thank you! I like it that you’re not a perfectionist and keep saying not to worry about little mistakes! Explanations are wonderful not to mention your cheerful voice!!
I have watched like millions of videos and they showed things once and they did it fast. You really helped me making my first blanket. Thank you, you really helped me
Of all the tutorials I’ve watched I liked urs best you made it very clear going to make one thank u
I'm so glad it was helpful! 😊
@@PaigeFaul you
Totally agree!! Excellent tutorial. So easy to understand! Thank you! 🎊 😊🎉
Totally agree!! Excellent tutorial. So easy to understand! Thank you! 🎊 😊🎉
im so excited too really do this it was very very helpful and you took your time showing us how to do it makes it alot more easier for beginners 😊🎉❤ @paigefaul
I became fascinated about making one of these blankets. I knit so I knew I could learn to do it. After pulling up five different videos your video was the only one that had clear & simple instructions. I am now in the middle of making my blanket. Success!! Thank you!
Love the way you explain things. A lot of videos I have found just play music, don’t help when you’re 95% blind. Thank you for helping me find something I can do ❤😊
Paige here's a video idea for you: make a tutorial video showing how to 'drop down & fix a missed stitch' on a chunky blanket!!! Everyone, if you find a loop (knit stitch) that you missed - you do need to do something with it or that whole column of knit stitches will come undone! But never fear - you do NOT have to undow rows & rows of your knitting back to the row it is in. You can simply undo the column above it on one side or perhaps both might make it easier - then knit that column back up to where you are! Yes the yarn & loops will have to be pulled a little tighter on that column, but most likely won't be noticeable to anyone but you because you know it's there lol. One other emergency technique/option is to use sewing needle & thread to sew that loop securely to the yarns around it so it can't come undone & then slowly make the whole column of loops/knit stitches below it to also come undone. Best regards!
I have watched several of these tutorials and this is by far the best and most thorough I have come across. Thank you.
I absolutely loved this tutorial, it was so helpful! Let's just say I'm gonna need a lot more yarn because now that I have this knowledge everyone is getting one for Christmas. I'm already 2 yarn balls in and trying to make it long enough to fit on my queen size bed... quite the challenge for my first time 😅🥲
Thank you Angie! 🥰And that's exactly what happened to me last Christmas...blankets for everyone! Have fun with your first big project - I'm sure it's going to turn out great. Your dining table might just be occupied for a few days 😉
I know I’m late and it can vary depending on the brand but how much yarn did it take?
@@Ashlyn111 she posted it in video description tab which is under the video.
Oh dear... I think I've found a new obsession!
Thankyou!😂
Paige - THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video! I have watched other videos to get started and they made the process so complicated and confusing. You explained things so well and showed everything perfectly :) I did have to rewind a few times and adjust the speed of the video, but not because you weren't explaining it or showing it well, just so I could make sure I had it right! BEST START UP VIDEO FOR FINGER KNITTING A CHUNKY BLANKET !!! Truly, much appreciated. Take care, Jennifer
Awesome video! You had me at "Don't unravel seven rolls just to fix one loop", I started laughing so hard because that is so me. I'm just a perfectionist and I'm trying my best to get away from doing that, nowadays if I see a mistake, I figure out a way to fix it without unraveling. Happy 2024 and I hope you're having a wonderful weekend❤🌹
You do an excellent job of teaching! Very clear instructions and you make the viewer feel confident in being able to achieve this craft!
Thank you so very much for your clear tutorial! I’m on my 4th row of a beautiful chunky, beginner blanket. Your tutorial is very easy to understand. I’ll keep you in mind, every time I make a blanket!
Peace, love, and warm Christmas blessings to you. Thanks again! ❤️🙏🏻🎄
Great Tutorial. Very easy to follow. Teacher is very patient and makes sure to repeat various steps. And glad she's using contracting a contrasting color against the table. Makes it much easier to follow. Thank you
This is my second time watching and making a blanket! Thank you so much for your tutorial!!!!! This made so much sense and was sooooo easy to follow!
Great video! Instructions were easy slowed down and showed things twice so we could follow along at an easy pace. Have watched several videos is the best one for beginners.😊
This is a great tutorial. It’s just what I was searching for. Thank you for explaining so well. ❤😊
I wish I had seen this before I made my blanket. You were very helpful and explained this so well. Thanks for showing me how to finish my blanket.
Oh wow I want one for myself
Thank u! I can’t wait to make one of these chunky blankets. And hopefully several more down the road as gifts for family & friends. You really explained the process very well so I feel confident in doing it!❤️🥰👍🏻 God Bless🙏
I have made two since finding your video a little over a week ago! Takes me about 4-5 days of working 3 hrs or so each time. All going to my three daughters for their Birthdays between Nov-Feb (all adults and two are married). 💪🏻🎂
Oh you are so detailed in your videos best one yet⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pretty good directions! I think I will watch a few more times and try it out . Thank you for such clear instructions and for showing each step a few times .
Thank you I saw a couple of other videos on how to do this, but you took your time and really explained it well and the trick with the hair clip is pretty good idea. Thank you so much for Sharon.💞
Fabulous!! This is exactly what I needed. You are an amazing teacher 💜
Love this like so helpful not only cheap but a nice thing to do when you bored 😊❤
You are a great teacher. The instructions you gave were so clear, the visuals filmed so easy to understand. Thanks.
Paige, Thank you so much for the fantastic tutorial. I made full sized blanket for my son and it is so cozy and
warm. It worked up beautifully!
i've watched like 20 tutorials and i've had so many moments of js pure sobbing because i couldn't figure out how to do the 2nd row and this helped me so much i love this tutorial sn
Very clear and precise directions. Thank you. Just a beginner here and love the craft so far.
I’ve looked at and watched so many chunky blanket videos but you made it understandable for a beginner. Before you I couldn’t visualize hoe to make the knitted pattern instead of the crochet look! Thanks!
Thank you for showing how to knit this blanket.Your instructions and visuals are very clear. Mine looks great!
Oh wow! Thanks for this tutorial I have seen these expensive blankets and wonder how they did it.And now I'm blessed to know! It's not as hard as I thought.this was so helpful and easy to watch ! You were so through impossible to mess this up@ Great job!😀
Thank you for your channel! I did 50 loop, turned out fantastic, all colors of autumn. ❤🍁🍂🌻
How many things of yarn did that take?
You’re an excellent teacher. Very clear you take your time explaining thank you😊
Great tutorial! Love the hair clip trick - it really helped, especially when I needed to set the project aside for a bit!
Thank you Carrie! Enjoy your new cozy blanket 😊💛
@@PaigeFaul how many skiens of yarn do you get to make the blanket? Wonderful details
Great tutorial, very well explained, thank you!
Thank you for your great video! You explain the steps so clearly and with clear video examples as you go. You are my go-to teacher for all things crochet!!
I'm so glad you found it helpful Bonnie! Thanks for watching 🥰
You are a very patient person & you go over a step more than once. Are you a teacher? You sure could be one showing students anything. Wow! Yes, these throws or blankets are very expensive. The cheapest I've seen are 30.00. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you. Happy Thanksgiving!!!
I just ABSOLUTELY love your video! You are so cheerful and you explain the process simply. Also, the video CHAPTERS help for quick reference. I had started with 3 balls of yarn and I am now on my way to Michaels for about 6 more lol. I will send a photo when I am finished. Thanks for posting this video and I love the comment about it being a 'positive space' only and not one for negativity.
Best video I’ve seen on this so far. Thank you for explaining everything so well. I can’t wait to make my first blanket. 😍
Thank you Lisa! Enjoy the process 😊
Me too! Ty so much ! You’re an AWESOME teacher💕💕💕

Enjoyed watching the video. You explained the process very clearly. Now I think I will make one tomorrow.
Omg, I love the video. It’s easy to follow. You give great instructions I love the fact that you said to use a clip. I started making this and am using a clip on each end. Thank you for making this.
Great tutorial, easy to follow, and not a lot of extra talk that is not needed
Awesome video! Just made a baby blanket and it turned out great! Directions were easy to understand and very user friendly. Thanks so much!!
Thanks,so helpful !
Beautiful blanket and easy tutorial.
Just completed my first chunky blanket. Love it! Your tutorial was done really well so it was easy to follow along! No doubt making many more of these.
Best tutorial video for this style blanket! I’m going to attempt to make my very first chunky blanket! Thank you for the video! 🧡
Hi Paige, I've made about 4 or 5 blankets, scarfs & hats and handbags. I've been using the Big Blanket Yarn from Michael's as well. One thing I do that you don't do and maybe should is tie a knot at the end of your yarn when you begin to make your chain. I also turn my chain over and start my rows it makes for a nicer finished look. So if your blanket is going to be washed it won't unravel. I tie my yarn together and draw the knot tighter and I trim off excess. I also don't do the last stitch on a row but save it for the next row as it creates a nicer chain effect on the sides. Just some little tricks I've picked up here and there. I hope it helps you. As well as knitters just starting out. But your right these blankets are so wonderfully soft, warm and cozy and make great gifts.
Thanks for sharing your tips, Ann! Since I made this video I started knotting that beginning corner, and I agree with you, it's definitely more secure that way. I'm looking forward to trying your other tips on my next blanket 😊
I also much prefer to turn the starting chain over & make the 1st row of loops by going through the 'bump' on the back, also known as the 3rd leg/strand of the chain. And I also prefer the look of 'slipping' the last stitch of each row - does create an even prettier edge.
You’re an EXCELLENT teacher!
Love this video! ❤ Love the tip on how to secure end loops.
Your tutorial is wonderful! You explain everything so well. I've watched several other videos and yours is the best by far! Thank you for showing me how to make this blanket! I have subscribed to your channel.
You did a great job. I'm inspired to try making it. Subscribed

Congratulations on your two grandchildren, Louann! 🥰 What a special gift that they will certainly treasure for years to come.
Excellent tutorial!
This is a amazing tutorial it’s a really easy method i subscribed for sure!
Great video! Easy to follow instructions in terms familiar with. Thank you so much!
I really enjoyed your video. Best tip ever is the hair clips at the end! I have had to take apart way too many rows because I missed an end loop. 🙄 I’ve been making these since 2020 (Covid) but I hadn’t done one in awhile so I decided to watch a video to refresh my memory after having to unroll mine twice. 😪 I’m so glad I found yours because it was very helpful with some great tips. Thanks 😊
Hi Paige! well I am halfway through with my blanket, and I am over the moon about it. Thank you so much for all your tips and tricks. You are a great teacher. I am making a sage green for my Husband's Birthday. So, thank you again for your video and time. :) :)
Hi Linda! Look at you go!! And thank you for another sweet comment. I'm glad that it's turning out to be a gift that you'll be so proud (and excited) to give. Ooh I love the idea of a sage green...that might have to be my next color choice! 😊
How do you know how many balls to get?
Thank you. These are the best instructions for beginners.
Thank you so much! I’ve watched several tutorials and they were so confusing! You’re awesome! I’ve made two blankets in a couple of days!
I love this I want to do this now !!! But I have to go to work . Great weekend project. I see Christmas presents for my family.
I want to thank you so VERY VERY VERY MUCH! You are the best! I wanted to cry when I looked at other videos showing how to actually do this. One spoked and laughed so much I couldn’t understand her. Others went way to fast and at times I couldn’t understand what they were saying. You are my hand knitting angel 👼. I’ve begun my blanket and on my fourth row 🙂 I’m so excited and can hardly wait to see the outcome. You are the instructor I most certainly needed. 🤗🤗💐💐💐😍😉
Aww! Thank you for the very kind comment, Georganna 🥰 You are SO welcome and I'm really happy to hear that you found the video easy to follow. I totally know what you mean about getting frustrated with other how-to videos. I've been there too and it's not fun! Enjoy your beautiful handmade blanket 💛

Awesome tutorial!!!! Thank you for this video.
Some friends got together at my house and watched Your tutorial. We started our blankets. Your instructions were easy to follow. Using the hair clips was a valuable tip. The only thing we all got stumped on was at the beginning when turning the yarn. I wish I could add a picture of my finished blanket. Thank you for the guidance.
Such a fun idea! 🥰 I’m so glad the video helped. Starting the first couple of rows can be tricky, but I’m excited to hear that you finished up your blanket. If you’re on Instagram send me a message with your picture - I’d love to see it! If not, no worries 💛
