Gordon Lightfoot, (born November 17, 1938, Orillia, Ontario, Canada-died May 1, 2023, Toronto, Ontario, Canada), Canadian singer and songwriter who was known for his folk-oriented pop singles of the 1960s and ’70s. While Lightfoot enjoyed international acclaim, he was especially revered in Canada, where he was considered one of the country’s leading musicians.
Lightfoot began performing at a young age, and while a teenager he joined the first of several musical groups. In the early 1960s he found success as a songwriter. His works-typically poetic takes on topics ranging from the personal to current events-began to be covered by various artists, and this list eventually included Barbra Streisand, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and the Grateful Dead, among others. In 1966 Lightfoot released his first solo album, Lightfoot! That and subsequent recordings made him famous in his home country, and he became known as “Canada’s Bard.”
Lightfoot gained an even higher profile with “If You Could Read My Mind” (1970), which was a major hit in the United States. His other popular songs included “Early Morning Rain” (1966), “Ribbon of Darkness” (1965), “Sundown” (1974), and “Rainy Day People” (1975). Perhaps Lightfoot’s best-known song was “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” (1976), about the sinking of a Great Lakes freighter. He continued to perform and record into the early 21st century.
Lightfoot was a lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and was made an honorary captain of the team for the 1991-92 season.[80]
In mid-April 2023, Lightfoot's declining health caused him to cancel the remainder of his 2023 tour. Lightfoot died of natural causes at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto on May 1, 2023, at the age of 84.
On May 7th, a public visitation was held at St. Paul's United Church that drew more than 2,400 people. As in Detroit, the church bells at St. Paul's rang 30 times, 29 to honor the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald and once for Lightfoot.
On May 8, 2023, a private funeral was held for Lightfoot at St. Paul's United Church, before he was buried next to his parents at St. Andrew's and St. James' Cemetery. - Zábava
As a young kid in the mid 1970’s, you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing a Gordon Lightfoot song. What an amazing talent! Thanks for posting!
That's what I remember so much when I was young. He was always on the radio. I love his music then as I do now.
Yes, he was on the radio a lot. I would say to my Mom “ I think I will listen to Gordon Lightfoot “and I would turn the radio on. Nearly every time, I turned that dial, lo and behold, I would hear him singing.
My Mom thought I must’ve been psychic.
I would just smile and wink. He had so much airplay, that no wonder I was right so often. Lol.
He was such an influential part of my growing up. How blessed I am to have seen him in concert many times.
Rest in peace, sweet Gordon. 🙏
Thank you for all the joy you brought me.
❤️🇨🇦
I never met the man, but I loved all his music. I am 78 years old now and still listen to his songs. He was unique and won't be forgotten. Rest in peace, Mr. Lightfoot.
A great singer songwriter will never be forgotten RIP GORDON LIGHTFOOT,,,FROM AUSTRALIA,,🇦🇺🎶💞
Love Gordon Lightfoot’s music, may he rest in peace.
As a Canadian and a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan this is amazing coverage. Thank you. Cheers from Sarnia Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Being born and raised in Michigan,I have always loved Gordon Lightfoots music
...favorite The Wreck ...it has such a haunting sound to it ..makes me get goosebumps every time I hear
❤ It's a tragic part of history but he keeps their memory alive
he was as beloved by America as his Canadians. He was my generation and he resonated with us.
As an educator and a Michigander, I've taught my students many times about the beautiful freighter, the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. I would often play Gordon Lightfoot's tribute song and the kids would get emotional listening to it, and I would get emotional as well. 😢
I grew up, and still live moments away from Orillia. He was a local hero. We had all of his albums growing up, also raised my kids listening to Gordon and appreciating Canadian musicians.
Thank you for this!
“ superior they said never gives up her dead when the gales of November comes early” love, Gordon Lightfoot
Heard that the wreck was discovered, with bodies perfectly preserved. (&) The Families of the deceased, wanted the bodies left in peace, and not disturbed.
Sundown was the first song I heard on the radio by Gordon Lightfoot and one of my favorite songs. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was another favorite.
I love Gordon Lightfoot, his voice brings me back to hanging out with my dad growing up. If You Could Read My Mind is still one of my favorite songs.
As a teenager in the 1970's, I LOVED Gordon Lightfoot! "If You Could Read My Mind," and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" were two of my favorites! So talented! Thanks for the tour.
Thanks again, Scott. For another awesome video. Gordon was a wonderful singer/ songwriter. I live in Northern Michigan. I will especially remember Gordon. For the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Rest easy, Gordon. You won't be forgotten.⚘️⚘️
I love that statue!
Thanks for this upload, Scott. One song Lightfoot disavowed was "Black Day in July," about the race riots in Detroit, it's a great song but one he didn't want to perform anymore. Elvis Presley was a fan of Canadian music, covered Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray and apparently a fan of the group, BTO. Scott, I hope you will add the "Dionne Quintuplets" on your "to do list" for future videos, the two remaining sisters turn 90 in May, 2024 and your sensitivity is needed to tell their story.
Loved his music.
He made beautiful music🎼
Well, i obviously know a lot more Gordon Lighfoot songs than I thought I did! Just listened to quite a few! Yes, I love them!
I am still trying to cope with the loss of this genius. I am a huge fan, with "If You Could Read My Mind" being my all time favorite song. Thank you for this, Scott.
We Canadians love Gordon RIP🇨🇦♥️
Very well done Scott! I have always been a Gordon Lightfoot fan, such a great singer/songwriter...🙏💞🌻
Great singer. My faves of his, were "If You Could Read My Mind," & "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald."
Mine, too! I wrote the same comment!
I saw Gordon Lightfoot perform at the Surf Ballroom in July 2021. It was amazing and a dream come true. ❤
Became a fan of his at a young age and still listen to his music. Gordon is resting on that carefree highway, RIP to a great musician

Scott, you have no idea how much I've always loved Gordon Lightfoot and how much this video has touched my heart ❤😢 I think tomorrow I am going to the Post Office to apply for a passport so I can come out there and visit these places and especially his grave for myself. He has always been my favorite singer. For personal reasons, it's hard for me to listen to his music sometimes, but his songs are in my heart forever, and I will always love the man. I think I'm going to plan a trip out here next year. His music just touched and still touches my soul. Thank you for doing this video with your friends Brian and Kevin. Good luck to Brian on his new channel and tell your other friend to release his music catalog, the world's waiting for it. Take care, everyone. I'm going to stop at the nearest bar now and order me a drink 🍸 RIP Gordon. Your music will always be the most beautiful part of my memories ❤ 💐
Back in 1979 I was a teenager and when Daylight Katy came on the good ol’ radio I fell in love with Gordon Lightfoot’s music and never looked back ❤
Being a Torontonian, born, raised and still living here and taking many road trips along the Bridle Path lol and dreaming, and trips to beautiful Orillia, I SO appreciated this video. Gordon Lightfoot, our Canadian storyteller will forever be missed.

"If You Could Read My Mind" is a beautiful song! Also beautiful: you leaving your hat 🤍
I think it’s awesome that in his song “The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald” he mentions the bell tolling at the Mariners Cathedral and so when he passed that same bell rolled for him as well!

Gordon Lightfoot used to play the Calvin in Northampton Mass every spring.
What a wonderful video for the talented late Gordon Lightfoot. Thank you always Scott & thank you Kevin & Brian for showing us around & telling us more about Gordon. You guys are awesome. Kevin you & Scott just cracked me up in that Florida video. My all time fave part was during one of “bloopers” when you walked in-front of the camera & you scott say get out of the f-in shot! Lol🤣 Oh man you two need to make more videos like that. Love your shirt by the way Brian. I love Drake too by the way. He’s so neat. Still remember him as Jimmy on Degrassi💕

Amazing!!! An Orillia resident here. Gord was a staple to this town ❤
Love Orillia !
I also live in Orillia. I have been to some of his concerts. My best friends Mom lived on the same street as the Lightfoot family. I met his mother,Jessie a few times. Gordon always introduced her at his concerts.
Another memory was when the bust of him at the Opera House was unveiled. I had my book,Lightfoot autographed by him. We chatted for a few minutes. I also chatted with his wife,Kim for about five minutes. A beautiful man... with beautiful music. RIP Gordon, you are missed. I have many favorite songs, too numerous to mention.
I often go to his statue at Tudhope Park to reflect many times. It's beautiful. ✌️
Awesome video Scott. Loved it. Hope you had an amazing birthday by the way. I really loved your latest podcast appearance too. Keep up the amazing work my friend
Thank you for the visit home! When coming from this small town the first thing you say is where Gordon Lightfoot came from and then everyone seems to know where it is.

There was a time in this fair land where the railroad did not run. Where the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun. Long before the white man and long before the wheel. When the green dark forest was too silent to be real. There's is something about his music I love. Thank you for this.
What an amazing song the Railroad Trilogy is!! You can feel the whole song and if you close your eyes you can feel the men working on the railroad. I’ve looked through a lot of comments and yours is the first one I see to mention it.
@@judypurser6315 I am a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan. I love his music.
Thank you Scott for another awesome video. I was a young kid when I first heard Gordon Lightfoot's song "If you could read my mind" and I have not heard it since but I always remembered some of the words of the song. So years later I looked it up online some of the lyrics from the song and I was so surprised that I found it and played it and it brought back so many memories of my early youth. It even made me misty eyed because my great grand-monther passed away around the time I first hear that song. It was such a soothing and relaxing song to listen to even at that early age I was very moved by his song. I am so glad I finally put a name and face to this wonderful masterpiece. Thanks again Scott for sharing.
Gordon Lightfoot was one of Jim Cuddy's favorite singers, and he inspired Jim. This was a great video
Scott - Thank you so much for this in depth video on Gordon Lightfoot. I loved his music and was fortunate enough to hear him in concert here in Michigan in the late '70's. A wonderful talent. Thanks again Scott. Blessings - Judith 🎵🎭
Amazing video Scott, my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song is the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and keep up the great work and I can't wait for the next video and a suggestion for a video is that you visit the memorial and graves of the Twistext team that died in the el reno tornado back in 2013, Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras and Carl Young. Thank you.
Great city Orillia. Superb talent Gordon Lightfoot 🇨🇦
Thank you for this beautiful tribute to such an iconic Canadian. Well done my friend. Jory's music was perfect!! I hope we can get him to put his music back online. Great job Kevin. Loved all the guitars. 🇨🇦
Gordon Lightfoot was a big part of my growing up in the70s Michigan and was always on the radio. Still gives me good memories. We loved him! I had always wanted to see him in concert but never had the opportunity, We had a local dope that did covers of all Gordon's songs and called himself Gordo Heavyfoot...he wasnt very good either. What a jackass.
Nobody mentioned my favorite Lightfoot song. Daylight Katy 🎶 Enjoyed this. Glad you did this one 👍
I've been waiting for this one Scott!!! Fantastic job! I was born in 1970 and growing up my father was a Gordon Lightfoot super fan!!! That said my dad would also build miniature log cabins and sell them in craft shops all along the east coast. (we're from east Tennessee) anyway just a few years before my father's death he went to see Gord in concert and actually got to meet him! They became friends and my dad built him a cabin and sent it to him. I remember Gordon actually would call the house from time to time. Anyway that's my connection to Gordon. I never met him myself but I'm greatful he was such an awesome human and was kind to my father! Rest in peace both Gordon and Pop
Thanks so much for this video. I am so glad that there are so many tributes to Gordon throughout Ontario. Thrilled to hear Jory Nash here. Tell him "hello from Kathy" -- we served on a folk music board many years ago! I agree---he plays beautiful music!
I will definitely say hello to Jory for you?
Thanks@@SCOTTONTAPE
And at night -20
Degrees.
God Bless Gordon and his Brother x
“If You Could Read My Mind” is such a great song!
Thanks Scott - big Gordon Lightfoot fan here! I especially like how you splice in photos of your subject at the landmark that you are visiting - it adds so much to the experience! Gordon outside his childhood home, with Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell inside the many-windowed room, Gordon standing in the doorway of his last home. Keep up the great work!
Awesome video Scott. RIP Mr. Lightfoot 😢❤" Sundown"was one of my favorite songs of his.
Really close friend of mine here in NE Ohio was driving Gordon's tour bus up until he had to cancel his tour in April... Great, legendary talent.... RIP.
Beautiful job of a tribute visiting Gordon's homes and old haunts!
Not a Canadian, not even close. I am from south Mississippi. My number one favorite Lightfoot song is Sundown. I love all his music though.
A great story teller with a very distinctive voice, I've loved his songs since I first heard the track "Sundown" as a very young girl, back in early 1974.
