16th Street Baptist Church bombing, terrorist attack in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 15, 1963, on the predominantly African American 16th Street Baptist Church by local members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). Resulting in the injury of 14 people and the death of four girls, the attack garnered widespread national outrage.
Throughout the civil rights movement, Birmingham was a major site of protests, marches, and sit-ins that were often met with police brutality and violence from white citizens. Homemade bombs planted by white supremacists in homes and churches became so commonplace that the city was sometimes known as “Bombingham.” Local African American churches such as the 16th Street Baptist Church were fundamental in the organization of much of the protest activity. In 1963 the 16th Street Baptist Church hosted several meetings led by civil rights activists. In an effort to intimidate demonstrators, members of the KKK routinely telephoned the church with bomb threats intended to disrupt these meetings as well as regular church services.
When a bomb made of dynamite detonated at 10:22 AM on September 15, 1963, church members were attending Sunday school classes before the start of the 11:00 AM church service. The bomb exploded on the east side of the building, where five girls were getting ready for church in a basement restroom. The explosion sprayed mortar and bricks from the front of the building, caved in walls, and filled the interior with smoke, and horrified parishioners quickly evacuated. Beneath piles of debris in the church basement, the dead bodies of four girls-Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, and Carole Robertson, all age 14, and Denise McNair (age 11)-were discovered. A fifth girl who had been with them, Sarah Collins (the younger sister of Addie Mae Collins), lost her right eye in the explosion, and several other people were injured.
Violence broke out across the city in the aftermath of the bombing. Two more young African Americans died, and the National Guard was called in to restore order. The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke at the funeral of three of the girls. Despite repeated demands that the perpetrators be brought to justice, the first trial in the case was not held until 1977, when former clan member Robert E. Chambliss was convicted of murder (Chambliss, who continued to maintain his innocence, died in prison in 1985). The case was reopened in 1980, in 1988, and finally again in 1997, when two other former clan members-Thomas Blanton and Bobby Frank Cherry-were brought to trial. Blanton was convicted in 2001 and Cherry in 2002; both received life sentences (Cherry died in 2004, Blanton in 2020). A fourth suspect, Herman Frank Cash, died in 1994 before he could be tried.
The bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church was examined by director Spike Lee in the Oscar-nominated documentary 4 Little Girls (1997). In the film, Lee interviews witnesses to the bombing and family members of the victims while at the same time exploring the backdrop of segregation and white harassment that were central to the time period.

Thanks, Scott. Nicely done. Chris McNair was Denise’s father. Maxine was her mother. Maxine lived the longest of all the girls’ parents, passing just last year at age 93. Chris and Maxine are in the documentary “4 Little Girls” by Spike Lee. They explain why they chose to hold a separate funeral for their daughter. Gut-wrenching.

I'm here in Montgomery Alabama about 45 minutes from Montgomery. Denise Mcnair, Attie mae Collins, and Cynthia wesley are the ones who had a joint funeral. It was Carol Robertson who had a private funeral. Her parents allegedly planned her funeral separately because they'd made arrangements already

@@juanitaarrington3209 Yes, I was going to add that correction about the joint funeral vs. Carole Robertson's. It's understandable that Carole's family would begin making arrangements Monday morning. Her mother said in 4 Little Girls that the ministers (Dr. King among them) didn't propose the joint funeral until later Monday, after they had made their own arrangements.

This is such a wonderful video Scott. Great job as usual. It's a shame those four sweet little girls lost their lives at church that day. Hard to believe that took place 60 years ago. And here we are in 2023, sixty years later, and from all of the social and political crap that is going on, one could argue that we are worst off now than we were all of those years ago. So much hate, political, racial divide in this country. The ones that keep bringing up race and hatred, the ones that keep making everything about race and bigotry, are the ones that are truly racist and don't want racism to die. Sometimes I wonder if/when we will ever get past one another's skin color and just realize that we all bleed the same color blood, have the same color bones, have the same internal organs, breathe the same air and drink the same water, as well as we all put our pants on the same way, one leg at a time. We all have more in common than most media and government officials care to admit. When will racism and bigotry become a thing of the past, so that all of God's people can live as one race....the human race? Love the video Scott. Peace out and God Bless!

It's easy to get complacent about the devastation that took place when you see it every day, but a few months ago, I had time on my lunch break, so I just went to the church and memorial and walked around. Very good! I remember a documentary about this and the song Birmingham Sunday by Joan Baez was the song played at the introduction of the documentary that came out in 1997. R.I.P.💔🌹🕊

Just heart wrenching. Those beautiful, innocent children. Those dogs make me feel sick. The fact that those men lived most of their lives with no consequences, makes me sick. Their tortured souls are paying the price now. The cost of freedom that was extracted from those babies should never have happened. How awful that Birmingham has this legacy.

Breaks my heart to see young innocent lives be taken by hatred. We are our own worst enemy, and it's still no better today. All lives matter regardless.

Thank you Scott for this video. Such a very sad day. People gathered together in peaceful communion to have children take from this world like this. I get a lump in my throat . RIP sweet girls. We never forget you♥️♥️♥️♥️

Scott, I love you when you are brash, amusing, and whimsical. However, I love you most when you are centered, kind and observing. This video is among your best when speaking of unfathomable tragedy. Mathew Shepherd's video is of the same nature. I commend you on these memorable videos. Once you watch them you never forget the tragedy, but you also never forget the names of the young victims. The victims and their lives is what we should remember, always. Thank you once again for taking us on a historical, meaningful, and tragic story. May God bless your travels and keep you safe. So you can continue to bring us such wonderful content. To remind us all, we are of one race, the human race.
With respect always, The Gross Family, Wayne, Jill and (your buddy) Wyatt.

Thank you Scott for doing this. I am from Alabama and this is still an open wound that will never heal. My father was born around the same year as three of the girls. Makes you wonder what could have been for them. Tidbit to share my daughter did a photoshoot for a Black History calender and she was portrayed one of the four girls in the photo shoot.

Beautiful Scott, very touching. To hate another person because of how they look is just negative conditioning. The world requires a lot more positive conditioning so that young children can grow up to be loving adults.

What a horrific part of our history, I hated George Wallace, I remember listening to him on TV with my grandmother, we were both disgusted. Those poor girls and the 2 boys did not deserve to die that way. Unfortunately, those issues are still going on all over the country. RIP Young Children...
