      I think it's probably because the fans make such a big deal of their sexuality and the show isn't about that - the audience doesn't need to know. I personally don't care what sexuality Sherlock is. The show isn't a romance and it isn't meant to be; romance would ruin the whole crime/mystery part of the show. John is married to Mary but the show doesn't focus on their romance at all; although I like Mary's character if it focused on their marriage and not the casesthe show would just another boring romantic drama.

      "I think it is a show about a detective, not a detective show." - Mark Gatiss
      Sorry, but Sherlock actually IS a romance. It's not about solving crimes, it's about Sherlock's growth as a character and the incredibly poignant relationship between him and John. The cases in season 3 (besides the Mayfly Man) were so weak that it was almost embarrassing. There's no romance shown between John and Mary because there IS no romance between John and Mary. I expect they'll be divorced pretty soon, or Mary's going to disappear.

    They don't *need* to have sex. They're soul mates! In His Last Bow, John dreams about Sherlock, and, during Sherlock's hallucination, he regains his strength at the though of John being in danger. They would kill and die for each other. There's no truer love than that.

    • @annafreitag9498
      @annafreitag9498 Před 8 lety +85

      It's not about actually having to show them having sex or something. It's just about daring to be open about an actual non-platonic love relationship. There have definitely been these kind of hints throughout the story. It would be a huge step for lgbtq representation on tv if they decided to make such a realtionship between two lead characters obvious at the end or near the end of the story. It's not about sexualization, it's about the recognition of the possibility of same-sex non-platonic relationships. You can perfectly portray a love relationship (not "just" friendship) without including sex. It's done all the time. Why are gestures like for example kissing, hugging etc. automatically super sexualized when it's about gay couples, but never about heterosexual couples. If you had a heterosexual couple in a tv show, would you insist on it not needing to be sexual only because you could be afraid of them actually doing something people do in a love relationship?

      exactly. It's already cannon, it's just not a sexual love affair, but a romantic very intense friendship. People want to have clear cuts and rigid little boxes to put the characters in, but there's a huge grey area between friendship and a sexual relationship, I'd say.

    I absolutely love Mary :D at first I thought she was going to be a sort of a block between Sherlock and John like John's earlier girlfriends (frankly because the girlfriends had to compete with Sherlock for John's attention) but I was really surprised when she was happy and cool with John and Sherlock's friendship. Even Sherlock approved of her which made me so ecstatic. She didn't diminish John and Sherlock's chemistry, which was fantastic. Mary just fitted in so perfectly. You are so right! I really don''t understand quite where all this came from. He was actually talking about drugging the elf to make it fall over, if you take the accompanying hand gesture inot account as well, so as to sort out the height difference. Perhaps he should not have pointed out what some people might think - that seems to be where the whole host of 'offfended' 'some people' suddenly decided to take the whole thing out of its actual context. When you look at all the stuff about a homosexual relationship between him & Benedict / Watson & Sherlock people don't seem to think that may be offensive to them both - but thats OK - they are expected to put up with it - they even were forced into reading some of it out at the BFI event which they were obviously VERY uncomfortable about - but that is apparently OK as well. Drugging an elf is however beyond decency apparently!!

    I think the reason so many people adore the idea of Sherlock and John being in a romantic relationship, is that it is so rare to find one with complexity and depth in mainstream media at all, heterosexual or otherwise. Quite often, a romantic interest is just thrown in to the story and five seconds later they’re together… just ‘because.’ Little chemistry, little relationship development, and the audience is expected to be invested. Mary and John is a prime example. Do you blame the fans for wanting something more? Because the fanfiction etc. is usually not mindless smut, it’s a genuine exploration of a deep bond between two characters that is rarely done in television these days. You hear a lot of people saying ‘Why are you always undervaluing the ~meaning of friendship~ by wanting these two men to be properly in love???’ Yeah, because the world is suffocating with homosexual relationship representation. It’s also funny how you never really seem to hear that about the heterosexual couples. But whatever. I’m not even going to go into what Sherlock and John being romantically involved would mean to the non-heterosexual audience. (A lot. Basically.) If the show’s writers did choose to make Sherlock and John in an openly romantic relationship, I could write an essay about why it would be amazing.

    I do love the idea of Johnlock and I love that the show constantly feeds into it with the gay jokes, but I do think that they absolutely LOVE and admire each other in a platonic way and somehow that makes it even more powerful...if anything, I took from some of the specials that have been on lately, they mentioned that in past films and shows and even in the books themselves that many have seen it as a man who loves another man but the other man doesnt know it and especially after season 3 fans can read into that.

    I very much like the actress who they've picked to play Mary. She seems so petite and agreeable and very very perfect for John (not considering she's also Martin Freeman's partner in real life as well).

    • @lizbennetgenova
      @lizbennetgenova Před 10 lety +3

      Oh, com'on, do you really think there wasn't ANY other actress in the WHOLE UK able to play it better?! Oh how she must have struggled a lot to get the role, hard auditions, you know.. -.- It all screams BYE BYE MERITOCRACY. If I was any other of the actresss that couldn't get their chance, I wouldn't be happy. They even tried to sell the "oh the fact she's Martin's partner adds something to the whole thing and to their chemistry".. now if it was true, you should hire the wives of all actors to play their girlfriends on screen. It's very sad just Martin - somebody who struggles for years before becoming really famous - didn't think it might be not opportune. And it's twice sad people are totally overlooking the problem just because she's Martin's partner and they don't wanna say anything he wouldn't like. I don't care if she had that scandal because she has huge debts, I don't see why she has to pay them working on the show.

      i'm absolutely sure there are several actresses more than capable of taking on the role of Mary. only difference is that ms. abbington was just at the right place at the right time. she's an actress herself and actually worked with martin freeman in other productions. so the producers/directors are assured of the chemistry between them.

    • @lizbennetgenova
      @lizbennetgenova Před 10 lety +1

      that's what I said.. people justify it with their chemistry, while to me it's a nonsense.. faking chemistry on screen is what every actor does and chemistry out of screen isn't necessary (and in any case, Martin could have become good friend with another actress as he became a friend to Benedict). Personally, I think it's very annoying people defend a choice which is balantly unfair only because they're huge fans of the show (I'm a huge fan as well, but what is unfair is unfair). I don't even think there were auditions, I guess they just gave the role to her point.

    • @sofiasugumar425
      @sofiasugumar425 Před 10 lety +31

      lizbennetgenova The only thing is, Benedict was handed the role of Sherlock as well. No one else was given the opportunity to audition for the position of Sherlock Holmes. For all we know, there might have been someone better. Amanda might not be the "best person in the entire UK" but it doesn't mean that she won't be a good Mary. If Moffat and Gatiss didn't think she'd be a good fit, I highly doubt that she would have been approached by them just for the sake of "chemistry". They love this show far too much to consider screwing it up just so they could include one of their friends. I think we should give her a chance to prove that she was meant to be cast as Mary. In terms of the world of Sherlock, Moffat and Gatiss know what they're doing, so I'm not too worried about the possibility of Amanda messing up.

    • @lizbennetgenova
      @lizbennetgenova Před 10 lety

      S Mar you are right about Benedict, even if it's slightly different as a situation if you ask me, because Sherlock is the main character and they wrote the show having him in mind as their only possible Sherlock since the start. I agree with you chances are Amanda won't mess it all up (even if she was terrible, which I don't think, she is not the main character on the show, so she could never ruin it). I just think it's unfair she has been given the chance of playing Mary just because she's Martin's partner and sadly this is what happened, in my opinion. Anyway, I think people will end up liking Amanda/Mary in any case, because the script will lead them to do so (I bet she will be smart and supportive of SH, more than in the original stories, because that's the cheapest way to make people love her and for some reason they want people to love her, they have made it clear enough) and people will blindly follow. Just see how they already love Anderson, it's really easy for Moffat and Gatiss to play with the public's response. Anway, it's -2 … I can't wait, really.

    5:27 - "(Mary) sees a lot of herself in (Sherlock).."
    This was the most heartbreaking scene of HLV when Sherlock explained that John had chosen Mary based on his subconscious attraction to dangerous situations and people. In that moment.
    So in a way, John is "attracted" to Sherlock because of the dysfunctional danger he represents. Therefore, it was heartbreaking seeing Mary's nervousness while John was processing all this in the run up to Christmas. She thought John understood her like he understood Sherlock.
    John's acceptance of Mary showed him finally understanding and accepting his dysfunctional relationship with Sherlock.

      I really enjoy reading Johnlock Fanfics and this stuff, it's pretty amazing how much creativity there's in this "fandom world" and there are people I would by books from, if they would write in "real-life" , if you understand what I want to say....
      But for the "real" BBC films, it is perfect at it is. You described it well enough so that I don't have to ...
      But concerning Keiya's comment: I would like it to if there would be a little more LGBT stuff on TV... but let's wait some time....

      See but I have a problem with that logic. Because it sounds hypocritical to me. I'm not talking about you specifically but the general public. Because when two characters of the same sex are really close friends the general public says "Why can't they be really good friends, why does it have to be romantic and sexual?" But every time two characters of the opposite sex are reeeeally good and close friends that same general public goes rooting for them to get together because 'oh they're so meant for each other' and suddenly nobody cares about deep friendships anymore. Do you see my point or do you think that's not the case?
      So here I'm going to invert the situation. We've got two male character who are really close and good friends. My question is aren't they obviously meant for each other? Why does their relationship have to be friendship-based only, why can't they have romantic&sexual feelings for each other too?

I mean, I would not take Mark and Steven seriously as writers if they made it more than what the relationship is already. I don't want a kiss/makeout/sex thing, to me, that ruins the chemistry Sherlock and John have from the beginning until now. There is a friendship between two characters that show that they care deeply for one another. That's how it should stay. I ship Johnlock, but, I really don't want it to happen on the show.

    I always say that a platonic love is really the strongest kind of love, silly as it may sound. Sherlock and John certainly love each other, but I think it is the purest, unconditional, friendship kind of love. (And it's not that romance can't have the same (pure, unconditional, blah blah), but that I don't see the romantic dynamic between them). Even with the flirting and playing, that stuff happens with good friends. It's a silly, funny, and comfortable sort of thing. They're bosom buddies!

    Thank you farfangled for expressing my thoughts also. Echoed clearly by both actors. What does it take for fans to accept that all relationships between two guys do not HAVE to be gay? The "brotherly" love of two men who love each other as brothers is just as compelling as the viewers and figures show for both Sherlock and Merlin. It is beautiful thing, just as beautiful as the love between any two people, whether those two people are brothers, sisters, gay or otherwise. To quote the wonderful John Lennon "it does not matter who you love, when you love, or how you love, it matters only that you love".

Sherlock killed Magnussen for John . Keeping his vow to protect John's wife Mary even after she put a bullet in him. John stopped limping when he met Sherlock . He took him from a cane to running in one moment when he felt needed. . That's pretty powerful and even when he thought Sherlock was gone and dead He didn't start limping again.

    What I think is that it’s bigger than the show. People have shipped John/Sherlock long before this series started and they will most probably forever will. Also, people are shipping characters that are only friends cannonically since a long time. It’s not just Sherlock Holmes and it’s not just this series at all.
    I think, as a reader, a viewer, or a fan, we should just enjoy our own views of what we understand behind the story. It’s the true miracle of storytelling. A story that can only instill the same interpretation to every one of it’s listeners is a bad or boring story.
    That said, I think that the era we are in, with social media and all, has something to do with the success of this “bromance”. I even think it has to do with the increasing success of the show. How many people watched it because they heard about it on twitter or tumblr? The show’s got 4 years to increase its fanbase almost effortlessly because of the social media spreading it everywhere.

    i like the "bromance" idea on SHERLOCK because it shows that even though you're damaged IE; john watson dealing with war & Sherlock's anti-social issues and the fact that both are adrenaline/violence junkies, you can still find someone to connect with. And I love the irony that their closest relationship is with the same sex. People always idealize romantic love as your wife/husband/partner being the person you're closest to. Sometimes the person that you expose your true self and real heart to is your best friend.

    I love Amanda and all as Mary but i'm still waiting for her to die, she just has to, or they are going completely against the book, and they have gone against the book in the past with loads of things but none were as big as this so it wasn't really much of a problem. The best way for her to go would be during this break to season 4 so its like the book where her death isn't specified, Watson refuses to talk about it, and he moves back to baker street. Nobody really knows how she dies and since Mark and Steve are like superfans of the book i hope they do something like this.

      It would be heartless of John grieving without really grieving for Mary, because he was mourning properly for Sherlock even followed 'one year' rule before moving on to another relationship. Especially after making her pregnant AND giving hints about her CIA-assassin past. So either she will die in childbirth - and the kid won't survive - or someone from her past will resurface and kill both her and the child... one will make John devastated and probably destroy him... and the other will turn him into a heartless automaton hell-bent on burning the world. I hope there is a third way out :(

      Vini Bhatt I hope she and the baby dies, not to be callous or anything, i'm just saying they can't make everything all lovey dovey, i hate when series do that and everyone knows the best series are the ones that aren't afraid to kill off prominent characters. And bringing Moriarty back doesn't help them either, i think he's amazing and i love his character but bringing him back is just a little bit silly really, they are just backtracking, and after watching an interview with Steven Moffat he said something which is now making me think this series is more of Steven and Marks fantasy of Sherlock instead of being a magnifcent adaptation i once thought it was, they are just altering to much now its all getting a bit ludicrous, first it was Irene Adler ( as much as i hated it, i let that one slide simply because every adaptation of Irene Adler makes her a love interest of Sherlock's), and now it's Moriarty and Mary, all the other changes they made weren't a problem they needed to be made and actually made the show better, but these bigger things are just ruining the series.

Even though i love the series to death, I have started taking it with a pinch of salt. i hated Irene in this adaptation, she loved me the wrong way, I guess, but yeah. I hope that Mary and the baby die, but just not offscreen and never to be talked of again. Their death should have some repercussions on John and Sherlock's lives. And as far as Moffat's interview is concerned... well, fuck him.

    • @xJellyMx
      @xJellyMx Před 10 lety +2

      Vini Bhatt It was the PBS masterpiece interview btw, just in case you want to check it out with Benedict, Sue, and Steve and there's one part when he's going on about how he loved Sherlock when he was growing up and reading about Irene he was hoping for more so he changed it up in the series, annoyed me so much learning it was just his adolescent horny fantasy that made them do what they did, i mean for heavens sake Sherlock never loved her in the book, he just admired and respected her for outwitting him, and to be completely honest i would've been fine; even happy with that whole relationship between them if they had chose a more worthy actress, no offence to Lara Pulver or anything but i found found it incredibly hard to watch her and her bony chest prance around like a slut, calling herself Irene Adler :/... But i agree with you to on the basis of Mary's death though, i guess it would be better to show her death and the effect it has- that would be a good change that they could make different from the book, unlike the rest of the silly ones they have already made.

    • @Furrina89
      @Furrina89 Před 10 lety +1

      xJellyMx I'm sooo with you on the Irene thing. I saw that interview and well, I guess i understood why Whovians hate him so much. I don't have a problem with them filming their personal Sherlock fanfic, but you know you can actually figure out which eps were written by Mark and which ones are by Moffat. Like the wedding episode was all Mark as Mary was sooo awesome in it - she was crisp and fast and not quite like the one in the book, but changed for better. But in the last episode was Moffat, and Mary was an ex-CIA-assassin-housewife-who-shipped-John-and-Sherlock in it. I wish Mark just would take over completely and write all the eps.

This is a relationship shared by some soldiers, police officers, fire fighters/EMS who spend half their waking life with a regular partner and who may go into harm's way; you learn to watch out for each other, and ultimately it is almost as close and intimate a relationship as a good marriage. And although you may change partners due to transfers or other administrative reasons, you ALWAYS remember your previous ones with fondness.

      But just to increase your consciousness and for me out of sheer curiosity: Did you watch The Abominable Bride?
      And if you did... what about your sentence "there are no hints or so people twist facts to fit their theories ".. There where so many (wouldn't say hints but) innuendos in that special episode, I wasn't even able to count them.
      Especially the one sentence from Moriarty: "why don't you two just elope with each other" and John: "actually.. would you mind?" Sherlock: "not at all". And that was in Sherlock's mind palace, so his mind came up with that.
      I won't say that John feels the same for Holmes, but Sherlock definitely has some stronger feelings, even if it's just in his subconscious.
      And just for the case, that you want to deny at least that conclusion: Authors write a story and sentences said by characters in a calculated way, they don't leave it to chance. They plan it. I'm not saying they want to make Johnlock happen, but at least they play with the thought it would be possible and they torture the fans with it, which is called queerbaiting. ;)
      Ps. No, I'm not a Teen and I don't even have Tumblr. Martin Freeman has an account there tho. And if you didn't know yet, Mark Gatiss is gay. So I wouldn't wonder about the amount of innuendos in this show, and the fact, that they are purposely.

      Wrong question: Why is everyone thinking they are straight? I think that they just love each other in a way which for once isn't straight.

    I think is is interesting that Martin said John has almost moved on and gone back to normal while Benedict said that he regressed..

      Wasn't this interview done before the January 1st debut of season 3? The actors have to keep the public off guard as to what's going to happen. Certainly, at least to me, Sherlock has not regressed to his season 1 self at all. Liar, liar pants on fire! No mas pantelones! teehee.

    Best friends SHOULD be in love with each other, and in a completely platonic way.

    "Friendship relationship" and "Platonic affair"
    New words to describe an otherwise indescribable " *something* ".

    Two characters of the same sex wo are really close friends and have a relationship so deep will almost always be accused of being something more and sexualized. My best friend and I (both female) share a relationship nearly identical in every way to John and Sherlock's - We are soulmates, undeniably, but our relationship is entirely platonic. We are both bi, even, but still platonic. This is the reason I see John and Sherlock's relationship as entirely platonic, because I have the very same relationship in my own life. Growing up, we were bullied and teased for being lesbians nonstop on a daily basis and it was actually quite traumatic, which is why extremist Johnlockers infuriate me. Now, I can appreciate Johnlock, it's not that I'm against it, I'm guilty of enjoying it now and again but when it comes to the CANON show itself, I think they have something 100% platonic and very special and deep with each other, and making it forcibly romantic takes away from that. I wouldn't be mad if it did become canon, and I won't presume that it won't become canon (based off the fact that the series is APPARENTLY inspired by a film where Sherlock is gay, and loves John romantically, but remains one-sided), but I do seriously doubt that it will and I think their relationship as it is now is perfect. And people need to remember that Benedict and Martin are portraying these characters. They know these characters as they are in this series better than anyone, most certainly better than us. If they both insist that the relationship is platonic then they need to be taken seriously and not laughed at. You can ship it, but I think there is a level of sanity that needs to be kept in check and not berating the actors, who portray these characters you ship, for trying to clarify the nature of their relationship. That wouldn't be an acceptable thing to do if they (sherlock and john) were real people trying to defend THEMSELVES, or if it were your OC and your viewers/readers were refusing to listen to your words about your own character.

    I find Benedict's comment about the muscle memory being ingrained and that he found it easier to get back into being Sherlock this time at odds with his acting in the shaving scene in the beginning of Empty Hearse. He was very Kahn-ish in that scene. Jus sayen.

    Poor Amanda (no, I'm not being sarcastic). Apparently she was getting hate mail when it was announced she was cast so now she has to kindly let people know her character isn't a wedge between John and Sherlock.
