Death of her Fawn - a mother deer's reaction

  • Many of our local fawns fall prey to coyotes and mountain lions, but we think the young fawn in this video may have died from dehydration and heat exhaustion after a week of very high temperatures. Our local vultures served as undertakers while one of our favorite deer, Susie, mourned the loss of her fawn in a manner we had never seen before.
A note since so many people have asked: we have several places where fawns could drink water that we keep full, and we live next to a lake, but these are wild deer. We have very little control over their behavior. Fawns who become very weak may not figure out where they can find water, or they may be just too weak to get there.
Our deer visit us once or twice every day, sometimes they hang out for hours, but they are always moving and the fawns, especially when they are young, are often hiding out. We often won't see a fawn for several days. A few times over the years we have been able to give water or food to a very ill fawn, but more often than not, we simply don't see a fawn any more, or like with this guy, he just happened to die on our property. We are guessing he died from dehydration only because if he had been attacked by a mountain lion or coyotes, we never would have found him. Wild deer have a rough existence, and they really seem to appreciate a safe space.

Bambi is actually a boy deer but yeah it's like an alternate version of Bambi where he dies instead of his mother.
If the mother deer could talk she would totally sound like Bambi's mom.

A mother doe doesn't just callously move on and leave a dead fawn or even any other dead family member behind. The mother doe will hang around in the vicinity for a day or so before reluctantly leaving and accepting the loss as permanent. I've seen the same thing happen between siblings, if one is killed the other by a predator the other may temporarily flee but will always return to the site later to see what happened and to gain a better understanding of the loss. Deer learn lessons that are valuable for their survival from knowing how and way any death occurred. All animals living in the wild, especially deer, have a keen understanding that life is tenuous and can end for them at any moment due to circumstances they cannot control. So in the end, moving on and accepting the loss is what they must do for their own survival. Having observed animals for decades, my belief is Susie didn't see any obvious reason for or cause of the fawn's death, such as a predator killing it or getting hit by a car. If a predator had killed the fawn it would likely return to the carcass. By hanging around, Susie would see what predator took her fawn. Basically, with no explanation for the death, Susie was very puzzled as to what happened and just kept lingering trying to get a clue. It isn't so much that the deer is grieving as it is the mother instinct not to leave a downed fawn unattended and the need to gain an understanding of what happened for enhancing future survival. And for those who do interact with deer and live in hot,, dry climates, please provide a fairly large (50 gallon or so) water source for the deer to use. They absolutely must have water and cannot get enough of it in a dry climate just from eating the vegetation. Finally, yes, most mammals do have a sense of emotions, including fear, lust, love, and other things humans have in their emotions. Thanks for sharing the video.

This may be hard to believe, but U.S. Forest Service will come and kill the deer if people feed or take care of him! Not kidding ...... and they will do it with a gun right in front of your family there's many videos of this on CZcams....
.. and say that they've ( deer) been "ruined"..... because you gave him a bowl of water and maybe a handful of food once a week
..... thus giving them a reason to come and actually shoot him in your yard , frightening all your other animals, wild and domestic
Do not think for one second that Forest Dis-service is there to help the forest ....or deer .
This is the same for service that is killing horses right now under the bill Obama passed to kill all the wild horses in the country a lot of people don't know about this ....the Forest service loves to kill animals and not eat them or even give the meat away .
      Think about this ...
I support law enforcement and I'm a conservative but I do not support the forest service because of the way that they handle landowners and animals alike
.. completely insane.Forest Service says they won't be able to survive on their own now ....BS if we give olive oil water some food they didn't all of a sudden forget how to go and pick berries cuz I'm assuming they're an adult wandering around they already learned or didn't learn from their mother.....it's kind of funny because they're probably not going to survive that well on their own Im not for using them as private pets ...but....
they have very hard lives so the forest service punishes the people and the deers by killing them if we help them.
Somehow that doesn't seem like much of a forest- service....

john gibson,WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THEM?!I'm with you, that not at all a 'Forest Service';That's just bull$#!t,because just-just....WHAT THE HELL!Ahem,I really don't see why, just because you sometimes feed the poor animals, means they 'have' to kill it.You know what, maybe they should kill themselves.Because that is absolutely wrong of them.Or,just simply don't kill, because aren't they supposed to protect it?Oh wait...they're probably like police, they're not actually supposed to protect and serve you, they're only there to keep you in line.So I guess when you try to provide food and water to the animals, the 'Forest Service' sees that as taming the poor things and they don't want you doing that.Still, doesn't give them the right to kill the animal right in front of whoever's providing for it.

How they mourn is dependent on how intelligent they are though. ie an elephant or porpoise is up with a human if not more sensitive to death. Deer dogs and cats are kind of in the middle while things like insects and fish really don’t give much of a crap if any at all.

It doesn't take a genius to realize this as I as well as my whole family have been around many different species of animals all my life, they have many documentaries about this very subject that you can watch on Coco the Gorilla, to name just one..which is a fabulous documentary by the way. They're are many many more videos, documentaries, etc. about Elephants, Dolphins, Bears, bunny's, deer, etc.. Did you know that a Dolphin can see right through a humans body when he or she is in the water with it..& it can distinguish between all the organs & tell if that person has a tumor or is sick & if it's a female & is pregnant it can tell she is pregnant, even before the women even knows , how many baby's she is pregnant with,it will start pressing its snout, ( sonar) up to the women's belly & start to circle & will protect her from the other Dolphins in the water. If she pregnant with more than one baby they can see this..& Dolphins get perplexed as they one are able to have one baby at a time. I know this because i studied Dolphins, Marine life, Biology & i volunteer at Place where you can adopt a dolphin ,& they rescue & rehabilitate them as well as educate. As much as I believe everyone has a right to their option, you know what they say about opinions... They are like assholes.. I instantly realized it had to be a mama, so I turned around and she was still there. I stopped to check, it was small, so it was this year's fawn, still slightly warm and limp. I wanted to cry. Mama was there, I picked up baby and moved into the ditch. I gave it a few pets, said I'm sorry this happened to you little one, mom watched from a few feet away. I said I'm sorry mama, here is your baby😭 OMG, that killed me.

If you live in an area with a large deer population, like I do, it's not uncommon to put out water when it's hot or feed during the winter sure but there is a point where you shouldn't interfere. Like he said, it is common for fawns not to make it and to help it would be taking away food for the vultures and it was likely too late for the baby. It's a sad but necessary part of life. These are not domesticated deer, they probably just treat this area like a haven.

Those high temperatures were so prevalent this summer, absolutely suppressing the activities of daily life in a lethargic haze. I work long hours outside during the late spring through early fall, and I was sweating from the exertion of standing in place. The humidity wouldn't let any of my clothing dry, and I ended up with a respitory infection from the combination of workload, heat, and humidity. I've never been sick during the summer in all my life. My doctor put me on azithromycin, a very strong antibiotic, and it worked. But I can only imagine the stress a fawn would feel in these circumstances. Without constant rehydration the little fawn would have been so uncomfortable and probably had trouble keeping up with everyone. I hope you were able to keep your sleeping area cool somehow? I suspect that you are very cognizant of the energy you use, but a small airconditioner or dehumidifier in your bedroom was a must this summer.
