The passing of our wild deer friend Eva - 2002-2016

  • We first met Eva when she was a week old fawn. We were “friends” with her intelligent mother who visited every day, and so Eva grew up very interested in these humans who lived in her neighborhood. Eva formed a special bond with Marlis, and over time it seemed obvious that Eva understood a lot of the German and English that she heard. Deer are not like dogs, however. More like cats, they can be affectionate, but they are very willful and often obstinate. Eva loved to stand on the porch and look out on the yard, or into the house. Sometimes it was near impossible to get her to leave if she didn’t want to. I wish I had a camera when Marlis was standing behind Eva, pushing on her butt with all her strength to try to get her to go down the short porch stairway. Eva stood like a Tai Chi master - with all your strength you couldn’t get her to move.
    . . .
Eva loved to figure things out. Anything new in the yard would interest all the deer, as it would be something new in the environment, but Eva was always fully aware. We built a small garden house and she carefully watched every step of the construction. When it was finished she stuck her head in the door, looked all around, and then slowly walked around the whole structure. You could see her figuring out how this new structure changed the topography of the yard. Suddenly there were a couple of new places to hide out. Suddenly a view that was always there is obstructed. The place where the fawns used to hang out is now a narrow space between the garden house and the garage. Eva takes it all in.
Starting in their 3rd year, does usually have one or two fawns every year. When she was young, for several years Eva would have three fawns every spring. Most of her fawns looked like her (facial features and body shape), and most of them were a bit more intelligent and healthy than their cousins in the herd. Some of Eva’s bucks became very close to us ( see Yoda: • Yoda, a friendly Wild ... ).
In her last year or so we could see her age. Her front left leg was perhaps injured, but it could be she had arthritis. It looked that way. Marlis applied arnica gel. Eva really liked that. She also liked to lick Marlis’ hands afterwards. She would have eaten Bach Rescue Cream (made from flowers) out of the tube if we had let her! Marlis put Rescue Cream on Eva’s occasional scrapes and wounds.
    . . .
We have coyotes, an occasional mountain lion, and of course cars. It’s not an easy life for the deer. In this remote area where people built houses but the land is still pretty wild and open, the deer didn’t feel pushed out of their environment. Some have chosen to befriend friendly humans. It’s hard to describe the incredible feeling of being so close to these majestic creatures. I don’t want to romanticize our experience too much, but I have to say that we have for years been daily blown away by having these guys so close. Even with that extraordinary experience, getting to know Eva took the experience to a whole different level. She was a dear deer friend who has been sorely missed - never to be forgotten.

I can guarantee that her life was more stress free than most other deer. Being able to truly relax and be groomed by you must have been a true pleasure and something quite rare for such a skittish creature.

So sad when a dear friend passes on the torch of life, leaving our love with the memories but not their physical presence. The deer feel the loss too. I have seen & felt it with mine.
This interaction with people is how they naturally are when they feel safe in their "home" area..with people, they can feel the same "de-tension" as we do with our cats or dogs, innocence & peace.. no hierarchical tension as between each other, they will go from living on the other side of cover hiding as they monitor us to engaging with us, & bedding down in a safe relaxing area, where the people are calm & doing the very same.. being @ peace..
Many people think deer are sick when they are not acting scared constantly..they are very quiet and peaceful, loving animals, bonding is supremely important to them, they like to make "buddies" to their social and security advantage..it makes one less threat for them, making their life easier🥰

All deer have unique personalities. Some does are much better mothers than other. Eva was very attentive with her fawns, a really great mother, but in her 3rd and 4th year you could see that she was naturally well-suited to watch over all the deer in the herd. She was just that curious, attentive and intelligent, as well as being healthy and large. Deer respect good health and will even chase away injured or diseased deer.
Most of her fawns looked like her (facial features and body shape), and most of them were a bit more intelligent and healthy than their cousins in the herd.
In her last couple of months she became increasingly nervous as she began to feel the vulnerability of her age. She could still run at full speed if she needed to, but it would take her some time to recover. Some days in her last weeks she would be relaxed, laying out on the grass in the sunshine. I went up to her on one of those last days and sat down next to her on the grass. I stroked her neck for a while, and then stopped. We just sat alone next to each other for about fifteen minutes - perfectly silent, looking off into the distance. Then she turned her head to me, licked my hand three times and then just looked into my eyes for a few intense seconds, and then she looked away again, staring again at nothing in particular in the yard.
A couple weeks after that she simply didn’t show up in the yard, like she had nearly every day for fourteen years. There’s a strange thing that adult deer do once every couple of years or so. They will head off on a short journey, perhaps checking out new territory, or looking for an out-of-herd mating experience, but then after some days, sometimes as long as two weeks, they return to the herd. Eva did that a few times over the years. We were hoping that was the case this time, but we were doubtful. We’ve waited for two months now before making this video. After two weeks we could see the change in the herd. Suddenly the matriarch was gone and the hierarchy was up for grabs. There was a lot of bewilderment, aggressive hoof stomping and nervous running as they slowly began to sort it all out. During this time another deer we had grown close to also disappeared. That was Eva’s daughter Rosie, known in our deer videos as the fawn who fell into a deep hole:
    czcams.com/video/ZY6tlfjJ4HM/video.html
and who later as an adult took on the role of raccoon chaser for the herd:
    czcams.com/video/odAlDDQHgoU/video.html

How wonderful that you got to have her in your lives for 14 years. You as well as Eva were blessed to experience and learn from each other. it is obvious from the videos how much she loved you all and considered you both members of "her herd". The relationship you all had with each other makes me think that in the beginning, this is the relationship Adam and Eve had with all the animals in the Garden of Eden. So special. May God comfort you in your grief. Luke 3:6 "And all flesh shall see the salvation of God".

Wow what an amazing and deeply touching story! This is now my favourite channel on CZcams! Deer (particularly red stags) are my favourite animal in the whole wide world! But, it's very hard to find much about deer on CZcams (sadly, you're more like to find awful hunting videos with thumbnails of dead deer which is really horrible and distressing to see for an animal lover like me!) so thank you for making the world (and the internet) a better place by posting videos of actual live deer (who's have thought that was so difficult!). I shall continue to follow you, the animals and your amazing journey (have liked, shared and subscribed to your channel and can't wait to watch all the videos!). This is just incredible footage of deer and was just what I needed (have been searching for awhile) so thank you so much! I get what you mean about deer having different personalities too, I have also observed that (although I do think they are more like dogs than cats cause cats are mean but I get what you mean!) Some deer can be so funny and silly and others very still and dignified. I love their personalities and their gentle kind souls. I wish you had a book as these amazing stories and encounters. Your experiences with the deer are so wonderfully touching and well written I for one would love to hear/see more! Best wishes to you and all the lovely deer (deer can come hang out in my garden any day!) how anyone can harm these animals is beyond me they are so loving, gentle and kind! I'm very sick and in poor health and your videos and the deer at my local deer centre give me so much hope and strength facing death (to me heaven - If there is one - will be a beautiful forest full of stags and waterfalls lol that would be amazing. They are my symbol of hope and peace

That is heaven on earth. You are/were so compassionate and loving. When you put your hands on Eva you didn't just lay your hands on her... You stroked her to make her feel good. Every other wild deer is lucky to live out 7-8 years in the wild and your princess lived 14 years of luxury. I bet you miss the small things like her licking your toes. :) I could literally sit there all day.. Heck, Id prolly put peanut butter in between my toes to lure the lick.

I am so sorry for your loss. The bond with wild deer is something that cannot be understood unless experienced. Looking into their eyes used to make us feel as if we had a mutual understanding of love and respect. Although many will argue the point, I believe that deer do enjoy a relationship with humans that has nothing to do with food. In the mountains of PA, we had a herd of deer that we knew for many years. Our matriarch, Rosie, was very much like Eva. She also disappeared one day after many years of knowing her. The herd was never really the same, and it became very fragmented and chaotic. I am sure that your life has been enriched greatly by your deer herd. There truly is nothing else like it.

So sorry to hear about Eva , when I was young we had two mule deer wander into our lives , April & June , June was always shy but April made up for her ! We napped on him , he would wander into our guest cabins if he heard a bread or candy wrapper , scared the he_ _ out of several people , but was a sweet heart , I'll never forget him & I feel your pain .

She was almost human in the amount of love she received from you. Losing a friend like that would not be easy if not for your husband being with you. It was a wonderful experience for me, too, to see the video. May God bless you and your husband.

When I think about it, Eva was so blessed to know such loving people and lucky she didn't fall prey to a hunter or mountain lion, to have lived as long as she did but the loss doesn't make it any easier regardless knowing this. She was truly special as well as all the other deer you've known. If your interested there is a show called (TOUCHING THE WILD) with renowned wildlife researcher Joe Hutto, I believe it is part of channel 13 here in Texas, anyway, this show takes you on a journey with wild Mule deer that Joe befriends, much like yourselves. It was really interesting to watch their behavior and their intelligence and one of the cool spots for me was when a mother doe ran up to Joe and wanted him to follow her to show off her two new baby fawns. Joe said they have very high intelligence and found they truly feel pain and loss when one of their members dies.

I'm kissing the screen again. Lovely Eva, beatiful person who loved her human caretaker friends. Although I keep wondering why no vet ever helped her pain and illness. I am sure Eva would have understood that she needed human help. ....I was also disturbed at the flies on her face while being groomed on her flanks; how could her face not have been cleaned first to help her?
Anyway, I too am grateful for the videos. She and her kind were and are still loved....xxx
