    Gaming on Linux has gotten so good, so quickly, thanks to Valve and AMD. I've been daily driving linux (fedora 38/39) for the last year and a half and I'm never going back to Windows. It's so nice, my computer feels like mine again. No more Windows trying to force me to use my computer a certain way, or advertise to me, or try and force a new "feature" on me.

      Windows 10 has forced me to do a clean install three times in the past four years because an update borks something (the latest glitch killed my ability to update Windows; I felt nothing of value was lost).

      8GB even on 1080p is becoming a problem real fast, and we're starting to see the first instances where 12GB for 1440p is becoming an issue too. The only "problem" for the 7600XT is the 6700XT at the same price. 12GB will be good for 1080p for a good long while, and it is still 10% faster, so I'd go with that. But once the remaining RDNA2 stock is gone AMD won't have a cheap more-than-8GB option.

    Got hold of the ASUS version of this card (7600 XT) for an excellent price. It only uses one 8pin pci-e connector, which is great for those people (like me) who don't have dual 8pin pci-e connectors from their psu's. I could never fathom why a 190W card needed two 8pin connectors anyway, so it's good to have a manufacturer (ASUS) who realises it's perfectly fine to use just one 8pin connector. Plugged it into my OpenSuse Tumbleweed box and it was all good to go.

      Short answer yes, Long answer, hardware support with vaapi AV1 h.264 and h.265 is easier to get working than AMD AMF-AV1. AMF need AMD vulkan too so with the open source Mesa driver it mean having two Vulkan driver at once. It works but app need an environment variable to tel what driver to use. So personally I stick with vaapi hardware AV1. If you wonder what it looks like, my video where I try playing Minecraft with an AI telling me what to do. It was recorded at low bitrate with Vaapi-AV1 on the GPU.

    We really need 96 GB GPU with a reasonable data bus so that we can run the full 80B AI models. I don't care if its "a little too slow", its way more accessible then trying to use your CPU to do it. At 8GB for 50 USD, add the 600 USD to the card and give us something half decent to play with functional LLM.

    I still find AMD's management of their GPU division rather poor. Most visible in how they handle the gpgpu side of things and extremely fragile "pro" drivers for Linux. I don't mean their tech is bad, but the way they manage support is lacking to put it mildly. I mean why doesn't Debian have first class support when Debian is both an upstream AND has a whole team working to debug hip-rocm on linux?
    Why doesn't AMD have a viable hip-rocm product compatibility list? (They finally made an extremely truncated list in the last few months but it's wildly incomplete.) Why do they actively hide older versions of software and firmware that may be needed for older (really modest age) hardware and operating systems?

    • @PainterVierax
      @PainterVierax Před 3 měsíci

      TBF it was already a huge improvement when they stopped breaking the backward compatibility of ROCm without warning software devs. Few years ago I remember DV Resolve and Blender users had to manually downgrade their Pro driver to fix their toolchain until the software were patched.

    You are just so screwed if you are at a lower PCI-E gen, and I am not about to think of forking out for a new machine with sufficient amount of PCI-E lanes (Above 16-20) as they cost hell of a lot of money at the moment.
