@@506thLittleberry Really? I remember a small artist back in the early '90s going around doing signing for a book she'd written that was supposed to tell the story of what inspired her to right the song. At least, that's the way I remember it, I wasn't quite 10 years old yet at the time and my memories from back that far tend to be a bit hazy. I think my mother still has the cassette as well, though I definitely prefer the Gn'R version, then again, I prefer their version of nearly every song they've either covered or was one of their's that another band covered. Not quite my favorite band, but they really know how to work with what they can do and do a great job with it.

The first part of the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert was the band singing songs from their album during the first half, except for Extreme, who sang a Queen medley before ending with their song, More Than Words. Guns n Roses sang Paradise City, followed by this song, and Def Leppard ended with a Queen cover, bringing out Brian May to accompany them.
The second half was the remaining members of Queen singing with various singers to mainly perform Queen songs. You should listen to the song Somebody To Love with George Michael singing, or Bohemian Rhapsody with Elton John and Axl Rose.

I’d start there (live aid 1985) since you are looking at which Freddie Mercury stuff to try. It gives a look at “Peak Freddie” while he works the crowds. He dings a medley of hits too, so there’s a lot going on. It’s the perfect showcase of the man. There’s more, but this is where I’d start.
Not bob geldof on guitar, but he DID call Queen’s set at live aid the best one.
They are guns & roses + extra musicians. Synthesizers were not ready to do that kind of work in real time. You can sync them up now. There are 5 members, drums, bob geldof hair, guitar hat, & Izzy, on the other guitar.

Axl Rose's birth name was Bill Bailey and the brown headed guitarist (playing the guitar with two necks) goes by Slash (he is known for wearing a leather top hat) whose birth name was Saul Hudson. Axl is the only original member remaining (I believe). They got the name Guns & Roses as they were a mash up of two bands, LA Guns and Hollywood Rose. The Live Aid concert from 1985 was pretty epic. Yes, the whole band is "Guns N' Roses🌹" The singer in the white shirt with the neon green Jesus is Axl Rose. The guy in the denim jean jacket with the double guitar was Slash. The blond drummer was Sten Adler. The other blond guitarist was Duff McKagan, and the brunette guitarist was Izzy Stradlin at around the time of this concert, if I am not mistaken. There have been a few other members over the years.
Yes, you SHOULD view "Bohemian Rhapsody" a biopic of the band Queen and Freddy Mercury. It is DEFINITELY worth the watch. It even won some awards for its story.
Patti Smith is one of the best-known female rockers of her time. She is worth the listen. But the woman the put ALL other females on the map after the early 70's and who all that came after owed their gratitude towards is Linda Ronstadt. Without her, most female rockers and performers would still be not taken as serious as they are now.
Linda had 20 Grammys when most other female artists were lucky to have even 5. She was the MOST awarded female singer until about 2000. Linda did it across more than 8 different music genres when most were 1 or 2 style singers. She would sellout concert venue when most female and male singers could only do 60-85%. She is responsible for getting Eagles started, Emmylou Harris (country singer) being the great performer she became, and even helping make Dolly Parton a little bit better. She has inspired more female singer prior to 2000 than any other performer between 1970 and 2000.
Your mind will be completely amazed by the quality and range of her musical talent!!

Rock musicians are expected to perform their own material, mostly, so it's a little unusual for a song to be recorded by so many big stars. It's not like jazz or blues, where performers do a lot of their own interpretations of standards. "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is as close to a standard as there is in rock.
You did react to "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. It would be fun for you to react to more Queen, like "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions", "Another One Bites the Dust", or "Bicycle Race".
I have seen the Freddie Mercury biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody." It has the same problem that so many "fact-based" dramas have, which is that it's not based on facts. There's a lot of B.S. in the movie, some of it so blatant that it should be obvious even to someone who doesn't know much about Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek put in a good performance, but overall I don't think the movie deserved all the acclaim that it got. "Rocketman", about the life of Elton John, is a much better movie, in my opinion.
Some of us on Patreon chatted recently about bands and musicians we are obsessed with, and the name Steely Dan came up several times. That would be a good group for you to react to. Some of their best-known songs are "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Do It Again", "Reelin' in the Years", "Hey Nineteen", "Peg", and "FM (No Static at All)". Of these, I think the first two would be good places to start.

    • @DianeJennings
      @DianeJennings  Před 2 měsíci

Definitely check out more on Freddie. As far as I know, he never really had a solo career, it was with Queen until his tragic death from Aids related pneumonia. He was famously private about his personal life, partly because he was bisexual/gay which was still pretty taboo at the time, but also because, underneath the flamboyant persona, he was very quiet and introverted. Personally I would recommend Bohemian Rhapsody, as I think it does justice to despite the considerable artistic licence. Rami Malek's performance as Freddie was amazing.
For a little more context on the concert, he kept his Aids secret from the public, though there was speculation in the media about the possibility. he only confirmed it in a press release that came out the day after his death. The band mates took the chance to raise real awareness about the disease and funds for research. Many huge names performed, both their songs and Queen's. So , to be clear, no this wasn't Freddie's song

Freddie Mercury is arguably the best pop singer that ever lived in the modern age (not taking opera into account). I prefer this version of this song, a Bob Dylan cover as others have said, because I play and love electric guitar. But I mean, with a band, it's not just about the 'talent' of one member. It's like, my favorite guitar player of all time is Vito Bratta from White Lion, but White Lion is far from my favorite band because I don't think the song writing/lyrics are up to par much of the time - they're not bad, but for me they generally don't take it to that next level. But the guitar work, in White Lion songs, is definitely next level/of the highest level.
My favorite band is not the one I feel was the most talented/technical, because music is a feeling and it speaks to us all differently. My favorite singer is the late Ronnie James Dio, and Dio (his band) is my favorite band. And I won't argue that they were 'better'. But they are 'my favorite', and no one can argue with that.
Guns 'n' Roses were a great band though. And I love Slash's guitar work.
