  • Summer 2023 update. Hello all thank you for viewing. I still have the car and running on the same wheel bearing that i installed in this video. No issues. Haven't used the tools since.
    I do not own any of this music.
    Music Credit goes to:

    Me swapping my front left wheel bearing using harbor freight kit (Front Wheel Bearing Adapter Item#66829) and impact gun. See information below for cheaper bearing removal kit). First time doing it this way and it works.
    Link to harbor freight kit. When I bought mine it was on sale for $79.99 USD and came with a black blow molded case. I've changed 3 bearings now and it payed for itself including the impact gun as far as paying a shop to do mine.
    www.harborfreight.com/fwd-fron...
    Amazon has a cheaper one. Look up the kit from Orion Motor Tech.
    I am not responsible if you cause equipment damage or bodily injury, or even worse, however if you have any questions or better methods to do certain tasks simpler then post them up. I've done plenty of wheel bearing swaps before on the same spindle using a hydraulic press.
    Some sound distortion is present due to Sony AS100 being in it's watertight protective case. It sounds nowhere near from what you heard, for the last clip.
    Warning! Do not use NON IMPACT tools like I did. It is wrong and unsafe. The polished socket I used is an AutoZone socket I bought last minute. Luckily it did not break.
    Previously I was using the Craftsman impact gun that was rated at 200ft lbs and recently upgraded to this new version that is rated at 300ft lbs in reverse. Which is Awesome! And the new battery is Lithium-Ion instead of the cheap NiCad. Both batteries are 19.2 volts and are interchangeable between impact guns. Chargers are NOT interchangeable. Do not charge your Lithium battery on your NiCad charger or vice-versa.
    *2016 update
    I finally replaced the front left spindle, actually i upgraded to 1.8T GLI front spindles and brakes with new wheel bearings on both sides and existing good wheel hubs. The original front left hub was warped and kept causing the wheel bearing to fail. After replacing spindles and putting new bearings it fixed the issue.
    The method i showed in this video to torque the wheel bearing is an approved method by Volkswagen. There are multiple methods, i show one.
    Torque sequence that applies to me. Your responsibility to verify this applies to you. Check the Bentley Manual.

    Hey there Omar, hope you can respond! I have a bad wheel bearing on my mk4 golf now front right, and from what i understand if you don't use a press you can miss align the bearing from using tools like those, ending up in them braking early. wonder if you have had to replace yours again after this video?

    • @onavianva
      @onavianva  Před 3 lety

      If you don't have a press how else are you going to install? Need a press. If the giant circlip clicks in, then it's fully inserted and wont fail. I had replaced the entire spindle due to it being warped. and until this day, the wheel bearings have not failed. i still have the car.

      GREAT video, thanks

      @@dottorb7054 No alignment needed if the balljoint has a fixed mounting point. some do, some dont. and also no alignment needed if you dont adjust any steering component. if you remove and reinstall in the same exact position, you are good to go.

    • @onavianva
      @onavianva  Před 2 lety

      i posted the specs for my car here in a comment. check peternel's comment below. i dont like sharing the specs becuase there are different torque specs based on different designs. if your wheel bearing is secured by a bolt, then this is not for you.

  • @mateusz1399
    @mateusz1399 Před 8 lety +1

    • @onavianva
      @onavianva  Před 8 lety +1

      I never bought a slide hammer for the fronts cause I don't believe it would be as effective as using it on the rears. But I'll see if I can make a download link to the torque specs. I also can't remember the grease name I used so all that info is in my storage.

    what are indications of bad wheel bearings?

    • @onavianva
      @onavianva  Před 8 lety +8

      I briefly show one method. But you grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o clock and if it moves then it's bad. Wheel has to be lifted. Also some clicking, road noise and vibration while driving are other indications.

  • @jasonmorrison7567
    @jasonmorrison7567 Před 8 lety +1

    Is it the same one you keep having to replace? Are you using an OEM wheel bearing or an aftermarket?

    • @onavianva
      @onavianva  Před 2 lety

      I always use aftermarket for wheel bearings. For this case the hub was warped. I replaced the hub on this video and that setup is still in my car right now to this day and working properly. I Was able to identify a warped hub due to the new wheel bearing being able to be installed by hand without a press. The hub was probably cracked but i wasn't able to located a crack.
