    IMPORTANT NOTES
    A long bar was used to release the initial fusion tension between the wheel bearing and housing with the tool, but do not use this when installing the new bearing as the more controlled use of a standard wrench slowly and surely should be used .
    Coat the wheel bearing housing bore with
    Molybdenum Molykote grease G 052 723 A2 (sometimes included in fitting kit) high temp/high pressure.
    Do not tilt the wheel bearing while inserting, keep it perfectly straight and inline with the hub bore. This is the hardest thing to do and will take patience and gentle pressure.
    I found I needed to tap the bearing around evenly for quite a while until the bearing found it's path and I was confident the pulling tool would drive the bearing home.
    Pull the bearing into the bearing hub housing until the bearing meets the inner shoulder and the metal ring circlip is heard to click into position
    Do not grease the lock-nut thread on the drive shaft.
    Grease the propeller shaft spine only with polycarbamide grease
    Polycarbamide grease G 052 142 A2
    take your time; this is a precision job not for the faint hearted.
    Below is a guide only to the manufacturers recommended tightening torque settings for this specific Skoda Fabia car, please check your own car's specific settings:
    Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI Mk1 72mm bearing
    Cover plate to wheel-bearing housing - 10 Nm
    Phillips head screw holding brake disc to wheel hub - 4 Nm
    Do not grease thread of the outer joint of the drive shaft - 50 Nm initial.
    Use a new twelve-point nut for the drive shaft to wheel hub.
    It is recommended NOT TO GREASE THE THREAD OF THE OUTER DRIVE SHAFT when applying a new nut only
    Twelve point outer drive shaft nut - 50 Nm + 45° with power-assisted steering. Re-check after approx. 100 miles
    New locking nut for track rod end to steering arm - 20 Nm + 90°
    bottom ball joint to bottom wishbone - Use new bolts and lock washer - 20 Nm + 90°
    FS-II brake caliper to wheel bearing housing - 25 Nm
    FS-III brake caliper to wheel bearing housing - 28 Nm

The Only thing I did not consider was the rust and corrosion back at the spindel where the larger disk should be placed when mounting the hub. I did this job yesterday and found the 36 mm socket I had bought specifically for this hub nut was slightly to big to fully engage with the nut( on the outside of the hub ) so check that your socket fully seats inside of your hub I used an OE spec cheap hub so maybe the measurements are a bit off and double check your driveshaft engages easily with the new bearing BEFORE fitting the new bearing you never know and checking might save pulling the bearing out again if it's the wrong one!
    Anyway I ground of 1-2mm from the outer of my socket so it fits perfectly and the jobs a good un.

      Yes, you can use the tool in a machine press or some other collar to hold this type of bearing if you have one. It is very important that everyone knows that YOU CAN'T PUSH THE BEARING IN FROM THE FLANGE SURFACE. :-)

      @@ajfessey_landpirate8014 Thanks, Just had a look. Yes it is possible as you say, but they are useing a couple of pieces of flat metal bar to bridge the space between the bearing and hub. If you have a press and are confident this type of spacer/s won't slip at all then I agree, it will be possible, same goes for taking it out, by the look of it they are propping the hub up with angle iron, again 'if it slips'. Only OK if you know what you are doing and actually have a press and the space, although one would come in handy for other stuff. I still think the flange tool is better for doing this particular bearing :-)

    Hi Hat Boy Harvey, thanks for posting your MK1 skoda fabia films. We have the same car and are experiencing some of the same problems. Your clear and straight forward style is easy to follow!
    One question on the drive shaft nut, 36mm, 12 point socket, does it need to be a 'deep impact' socket? The one I purchased, not sure if its deep impact, is 50mm diameter and wont reach the nut in the recess!!

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Před 3 lety +1

      impact sockets are made for impact driver as they give a little to take the shock of the drivers, I never use them. I prefer to be quiet, the noise of those drill drivers that guys use drive me crazy and I'm crazy enough right. my socket was a little close too and is maybe slightly under 50mm diameter and fit on (draper) worked fine. Maybe take a tape measure to the shop, return the old one and find a thin walled deep one :-)

      @@HatBoyHarvey i take of the complete suspension body ( fuse ) part . With the bearing stil in it ( cut off the plate disk connected to the bearing ( whith the wheel bolt threads ) then i just do it like I do almost all other bearings . Put the bearing with body under a hand driven ( hydraulic ) pressure machine . Using busses or sockets with smaller diameter and push out the bearing with the pressure machine .
      When placing the new one i turn everything upside down and put the new bearing below and push the body with pressure machine on top and press of down at the new bearing... just have to use something like little metal plates to keep the metal ring at its place and to not put pressure on the inner( circle bearing ) ring or else the new bearing will brake. Then just press down untill you here the click sound.
      With this way you dont need the special kitt but you do need to have a pressing machine. But these are second hand way cheaper then the toolkit around here haha .

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Před 4 lety

      yes, presses are widely used for bearings in garages etc, but it is the flange/collar that pose the main issue with these bearings. This design is harder for us mechanics also to install. • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Před 2 lety

      It is really difficult to get the exact specification recommended by skoda for these. i have some trade engineering/automotive bearing grease left over from previous work that you can't get now. The greases recommended in the video are what skoda worksho manual recommends, so I put them in the video. You are lubing the inside of the hub so the bearing goes in easier and needs to withstand high temp/pressure so you can get it out again in the future. In my opinion any high temp/pressure bearing grease will do this ;-) I wouldn't worry too much as long as you don't use chip fat oil or lard you will be fine :-)

      Glad it helped. Maybe I should have been clearer when doing that bit, but this was one of my early videos and I could do a better one now and may update it at some stage. I marked it like that as a guide for 45 deg as my eyesight isn't too good, but did torque it correctly. The bolt on ones are much easier, but I think on these smaller cars they may have been worried to use bolt-on ones because less affluent owners may not bother or have reliable torque wrenches or even fit new bolts!

    Hi Harvey, im having some issues around the 9:37 mark, it seems your bearing just fits in pretty easily so it can hold itself in place, mine simply doesnt go that far in, i can't get it to hold itself in place. Therefore i can't adjust it to be perfectly aligned - Do you have any tips? If i you need more details let me know

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Před 2 lety +2

      Slowly but firmly tap around the circumstance evenly through the bolt holes onto the tools flange plates until you are happy to attach the tool fully. It isn't easy if you have never installed a bearing before and you may feel you need three hands. Manually tapping the first stages is the best way IMHO to make sure the alignment is correct (I tapped the bearing in a fair way) continually checking alignment (imperative this is perfect) before using the tool to pull the bearing home fully. Hope this helps :-)

      @HatBoyHarvey  Před 5 lety +1

      Molycote is a trade mark brand that VW/Audi group recommend in their workshop specification. I will put the specs in the description, but what is important here is to use high temp high pressure grease and Molycote is a synthetic grease that out-performs mineral based grease. I used some old high pressure/temp industrial bearing grease that I have used over many years without issue, but Molycote is recommended.

      The circlip is the wavy ring attached on the front edge of the bearing behind the flange. If the threads are damaged inside the wheel hub housing then you have to replace the hub/bearing assembly. Don't be tempted to re-thread as the wheel would never be safe. Audi A4 Haynes Workshop Manual: Removal and refitting of drive shaft. "Slacken the hub bolt 90 degress WITH
    THE VEHICLE RESTING ON ITS WHEELS". When the job is done, refit the wheel and "LOWER THE CAR TO THE - GROUND", then torque the hub bolt". Clearly then, this does Not damage the wheel bearing!

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Před 3 lety +1

      This is my take on it and I am sticking by it. If you load the bearing before tightening there is a possibility of bearing surface damage such as scoring because: as you tighten the bearing from an unaligned side loaded position the surfaces are being pulled into central alignment in an unequal manner. No damage can occur if you torque up the bearing first as the surfaces remain central when tightening.

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Před 2 lety

      make sure you grease the shaft and then it is just a question of controlled torque (more than you imagine). There is a reason I used a large scaffold tube over the socket bar! It will break loose as it has nowhere to go (penetrating fluid around the bearing edge if you like). Good luck :-)

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Před 2 lety

      I understand, maybe I was lucky that time with the back nut. I'd try and use a ring spanner long enough to jamb it against something like the top of the hub that meets the strut where it juts out. Put some temporary thick tape around it to stop it falling off as you may need both hand on the breaker side. it just needs to hold long enough for it to break/crack start the bearing off :-)

      It's all relative to experience. Any job can be fast, but these are not something you should rush. The bearing needs to done right and that means a steady controlled methodical pre-planned approach is best always. If this wasn't Dane right and the hub collapsed at speed it could be a life or death situation not just for others, but yourself included! About 2-3 hours :-)
