- In this video I will show some quick and simple weathering techniques you can use to "spice" up your 1:64 scale vehicles. This is the Johnny Lightning M4A3 Sherman Tank from the Greatest Generation line.

One small point: unless the tank was broken down, or parked up awaiting repair, you wouldn't get much snow sitting on the rear deck. Most of that covers the engine, and the deck is largely vent grilles for the engine. It would be warm, which is why you will see pictures of troops riding on the tanks, especially the Russians, on their KV-1 and T-34 tanks.
But the tank was broken down lol
Your right. I was wondering why that didn't seem right to me, but since the tank was abandoned its most likely that there would have been snow covering the vents
Small complaint, you added rust to the machine gun on the front of the tank. The crew would have never let the machine gun rust out to any capacity. They would have properly oiled and cared for it. Also I feel like the red in the rust is a little bit to warm/bright I think a darker color would be a little more appealing. That just my opinion though. Besides that you did a great job on this tank and I love the new dimensions that have been added to the depth of the detail.
in defense of the artist a fresh rusting is brighter typically and if the crew had been inside through a long period the rust could have formed on the barrel. no doubt they would have done something about it once noticed, however if they'd been trying to avoid exposure while moving through brush and enemy lines it is possible the hadn't seen it yet. rust forms quickly on untreated metal that is exposed to any kind of moisture.
@@KennyGarland My opinion about the color of the rust is that it looks like it is from a dry environment. I've seen his Mad Max videos and this color of rust works perfectly for the desert. I think a darker shade would fit a more damp environment. Also tank crews wouldn't be sitting in their tanks for days upon days, and never leaving, because they need to retrieve fuel, ammo, food, etc. Guns have protective coatings on them that don't let rust form, in that quantity, unless left in poor condition for weeks. A good crew would never let that happen.
Great work! Thank you for sharing this on the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
You should do more of these military type remodels/restorations
You should paint the 50 Cal on top “gun metal gray” or just black along with the barrel of the assistant drivers 40 Cal but other than that looks great!
*30 cal. But I agree it would look much better.
Skyler fox yeah I was about to say 😂
*30 cal, it was a Browning 1919 belt fed .30 caliber machine gun, not trying to be an Ahole just letting you know for future reference
Perfect for the 75th anniversary of D-day! looks very nice, its even got the normandy hedge cutters
This tank is pretty darn cool.
My grandfather actually drove a Sherman tank with the 4th armoured, and his division was involved in the liberation of bastogne.
I'm not positive on all the details, but I know they earned at least one unit citation as well as a coupe de guerres with palm from France.
I may have to look into picking up one of these tanks.
For tiny tanks, I usually take a spot of flat black and tap the end of the gun barrel. I also tend to really go heavy with the "muck" on the front of the vehicles (especially tanks) as they didn't get cleaned up much, and were forever plunging into swamps and colliding with things. All in all, a great piece of work here sir, rock on!
The weathering details you applied look great, far better the original finish and more authentic looking, Top job👍
“TANKS” for the vid
Why would you do this
i was just on a binge of your videos! glad to see a new one!
Boy your profile pic is cute
Cool video. There's lots of weathering techniques to explore, but here's a couple you might consider:
Rub a pencil lead against the high points on the treads to make it look like exposed metal where the paint and dirt are being scraped off by contact with the ground.
Oil washes are a fairly large subject, but thinning oil paint and using it to pick out the concave details on a model is a good case. It can either be applied directly to the details or it can be laid on over the whole surface and then unwanted oil wash can be removed with a cotton swap and odourless paint thinner. Oil washes are also very effective for producing rust and grime streaks.
Hope that's of interest to you. Happy tanking :)
Use a 1/32 dremel bit in a pin vise to very gently drill in the first few mm of the barrel, to make it appear...well, like a barrel. Then a drop of ink or black paint brushed in. Add a whip antenna for the radio. Cut down a bit of tea bag, roll it up tightly, and attach it to the rear or side of the turret to make it look like a camo net, or other carried "bustle gear". Although too small to route out, I would flatten the end of the .50 with a fine file, and dot it with black. Maybe use some sculpy and create tiny .50 ammo cans to also attach to the rear or side of the turret. Tanks would often carry a spare wheel or drive sprocket on the turret (a practice that continues today), so perhaps cast one from the undercarriage and do that? At rest, after battle, tankers often clear brass out of the turret, so in your diorama, maybe some lengths of styrene rod cut to scale, then painted with a brass colored paint, washed in black, scattered around the hull.
Very Cool weathering techniques Sir an thanks for the knowledge.
Awesome job bud, interesting video and the weathering makes the tank look heaps more interesting. Nice diorama piece at the end there.
Great job sir! Another stellar video!
This is AMAZING, and what a great day to post it. I can't wait to see what Johnny Lightning vehicle you do next.
A technic and history lesson in one! Always a good time!
Super cool as always. :) I love these projects; it's amazing how things transform with just simple little powders and such. Thanks for another awesome video!
Thanks for sharing. Looks pretty good.
Love your videos my dad is into hotwheels and its fun to watch
Thanks again for the great tips.
Looks fun.....great work as always
nice 👌🏽
It looks amazing. About as amazing as a snow covered, rusted grimy WWII tank can look.
Seemingly nice simple and easy but in reality he sees tough to pull off as good as this
Fantastic. Love the front end. Beast of Bastogne. 👍😈
really good as always
Neat tutorial! Thanks for sharing it.
great job on the tank
Bullet holes and armor plating wear would make it look even better
Looks great and I am interested in seeing more weathering techniques.
Great job on this one! Loks perfect paired with the Jeep.
Good work soldier. 🎖️
Citadel nuln oil is in my top 10 must have for diecast customs
No extra detail required, thank you Michelangelo.....now to that ceiling we discussed.
Thanks for the tutorial!!
great work! liked.
Can't sleep, but it's still good enough time as plenty to see what weathering can do to miniatures.
Andy's Hobby Headquarters!!!! 😎👌👍
The only thing I could say about it is maybe using a slightly darker rust color, but honestly that's just personal preference and the tank turned out great
Very good! Saludos desde Argentina
Looks Amazing. I love WW2 military vehicles.
Very nice!
Wooh Cobra King is a legend
I really wanna see you add some battle damage!! You would need to carve into it to make a hole for a tank round, but also deform the surrounding metal (or make it look deformed somehow) in the way that it would deform when penetrated. You could do a penetration on the turret ring (one of the most common causes of death for a tank in that era, if I'm not mistaken), a deflection or two on the front (because of the heavily armored front plate of the sherman jumbo), and then some smaller caliber non-tank bullet marks (from tiny bullets deflecting off and only causing minor surface paint damage).
Or maybe you could add camoflage? Like the soldiers stuck brush and plant matter all over and into the tank like a tank ghillie suit.
Cool very nice! It’s the next village, where I live.
Don't forget to check your blinker fluid and write your findings on the ID-10-T form.
Tools are painted matte black on the metal, at least when I was in.
Buena pieza amigo👍👍👍👍
I got to know my great grandfather he was a good man who grew up really really poor when his dad left so he joined the military in the 45th infantry as artillery in the battle of the bulge and also served in Paris he got two bronze stars he was a brave man I’m proud to call my great grandfather
The tract assembly consists of the drive sprockets, the idlers, the bogeys, and the roadwheels (which are attached to the bogeys)
You shouldn't put snow over the exhaust ports if you are depicting an operational tank. You also need to weather the track. There you are more likely to see rust. The tank body, road wheels and bogies would be mud stained but not rusty unless all the Officers and NCO's were incompetent.
Please do more military model
🙏 thanks
Yes please
Great video as usual. The weathering really adds to the model. The tanktracks could use some weathering. Maybe some mud or snow?
You should do more of the wwii vehicles, great job on the tank and the Jeep!
you done a good job replicating that grubby and rusty look thumbs up👍
Looks good! I would maybe add some black to the end of the cannon to simulate it having been fired, maybe flatten the end with a file too, as it kind of looks like it wasn’t shaped well at the factory...?
A while ago you I believe you said you were interested in Old logos, immediately this old boom truck came to mind, they've used it to remove the Katahdin Steamboat out of Moosehead a couple of times. They haul it out every once in awhile to do odd jobs on the lake, but the old graphic on the side of the truck always stuck out in my mind, if you would like it let me know where I can send a picture of it
One historical inaccuracy regarding the manufactured model, it’s a normal A3 hull while the turret is different compared to the one on the E2
Something like this would be a good load for a lowboy trailer. I've got a few of these in my 1:64 collection and have thought a tank would be a lot more interesting than say something like a large dozer or tractor.
Fantástico 😁
I'm thinking you could detail a few plastic green army men to go with the theme.
Some times the soldiers put sand bags on the front as well as tracks for more protection
360P squad represent
nice vids..but you forget to put some chipping effect especially the edge of the tank
You should do one of these tanks, but a mad max version
paint the hull machine gun barrel and the AA mounted machine gun (minus the ammo box for it) black
Thank you
Would you consider making a video on the P-40 Warhawk? I am not sure if you are into aircraft but I like to see the P-40 get worked on.
The actual model shown here is an M4A2 tank used by the USMC
It could be M4A3 just the "First in Bastogne" tank was M4A3E2 - different turret.
No sorry a jumbo has vvs suspension and the model shown here has bogies as the suspension system it also doesn’t have extended gards and also it doesn’t have the wider tracks
@@mattchandler2380 The model is M4A3 (VVSS) which can be noted from the wide engine grille. Both A2s and A3s were made in VVSS and HVSS variants. However as you said it isn't Jumbo and it definitely isn't the Cobra King.
I have seen a lot of banged up military vehicles over the years, but little rust.
Please make a matchbox steering rig restoration
What’s your preferred method of contact?? I’ve got a ford group six matchbox, wondering about commission, let me know! Love your videos, great work on the tank too.
I'm in a really bad situation right now cause I accidentally rubbed paint thinner on the plastic windshield of my brand new hot wheels McLaren senna while detailing it and it seems like it softened and fogged out the plastic and so I'd like to ask tips on how to make it shiny again (but on a low budget and using very common material) or other alternatives for the Pledge product that you had in your other video. I would really like to hear from you and I hope you could help me in my horrible situation
With this tank, you can do snow diorama
Did anyone else see killroy was here?
Add blankets and c-ration crates, sandbags.
Hey, in you mad max cars series, could you make your version of the Interceptor?
first off i love all your vids that i've seen,, just wanted to say (too tired atm to see if this comments has been made) but it is defiantly 3 0 EIGHT! not 6... 3083084
Well America was quite fond of putting sandbags on the tank ans extra armor. You could do that
Does anyone know how I can get in contact with this guy on restoring a car
Me as a Ww2 fan, I world really love seeing you doing the tiger I.
Btw i Think the rust is too bright.
Can you show how to use rust pigments from Vallejo please ? I can't find a good explaining video on how to use them
What're you doing up so early? No wonder I woke up at 4:00am
Not bad!
Nice vid, i would love to give you a challenge! My sons toy car was ran over by a real car and the roof was squished into the body. Reply if you want try and fix.
I’m a bit of the tank nerd lol
I wonder if the road wheels could be 3-d printed and replaced with working rollers?, from the shots inside, it looked like each set was riveted in place
👍
Awesome job the only thing they'll probably make that look better if you had a bunch of little German soldiers
Oh boy 3am!!
Blast mark on the main gun
The turret on your model is wrong. The Cobra King was a M4A3E2, it had the T23 turret.
Have a great d day
So early that this vid has 76 views
How many people corrected you to 3083084?
Pls put 3D printed tracks on the sides
sherman is a very nice tank, but one or two shots of a pz4 can kill the crew
First one's to bastogne was the 101st airborne Maj dick winter's of easy company
It seems I didn't wake up *_just_* to go to the bathroom...
Id Love to see you tap the posts on anyting I don't care if it's a car or not.
If I was a girl I'd tap your post, just to hear the soorhing sound of your gravely voice
