Dying in the Name of Vaccine Freedom | NYT Opinion

  • In the video above, Alexander Stockton, a producer on the Opinion Video team, explores two of the main reasons the number of Covid cases is soaring once again in the United States: vaccine hesitancy and refusal.
“It’s hard to watch the pandemic drag on as Americans refuse the vaccine in the name of freedom,” he says.
Seeking understanding, Mr. Stockton travels to Mountain Home, Ark., in the Ozarks, a region with galloping contagion and - not unrelated - abysmal vaccination rates.
He finds that a range of feelings and beliefs underpins the low rates - including fear, skepticism and a libertarian strain of defiance.
This doubt even extends to the staff at a regional hospital, where about half of the medical personnel are not vaccinated - even while the intensive care unit is crowded with unvaccinated Covid patients fighting for their lives.
Mountain Home - like the United States as a whole - is caught in a tug of war between private liberty and public health. But Mr. Stockton suggests that unless government upholds its duty to protect Americans, keeping the common good in mind, this may be a battle with no end.

I do not think sane officials can do more than they are. The battle to fight disinformation is limited to what democratic rights it can infringe upon. Education and social welfare as well as equality are key factors to overcome disinformation, but these things are seen as anti-american in almost all red states. This means that people will continue down a death spiral and will be held back by the iron fist of the government. It is sad but it is reality.

I'm a PCT who survived three waves of the pandemic. It was absolutely horrible. I worked at the tele/med-surge unit which was quickly transformed to the COVID unit. We went from having 1-2 codes a week to having nearly 3-4 codes a day at the worst of this pandemic. I usually had 2-3 other pct's on the floor with me, but this pandemic has created such a major under staffing issue, that I was often left as the only PCT on the floor; that meant that I had to help tend to 30 patients (minimum) every single shift, which, for those unaware, is 12 hours per shift. I'm pre-med and am working towards applying for Med School, but this whole pandemic has taken a lot out of me and I'm so worn out. Mind you, most PCT's are only getting paid 13-15 dollars as our base salary, and honestly I don't think it's worth it having to sacrifice my mental and physical health for a population that did so little to assist health care professionals when we were the most vulnerable and overworked. People were asked at the very least to wear a mask and to limit social gatherings, yet they failed to even do such easy tasks, while we were out here being over-worked, underpaid, and seeing our patients die such horrible deaths every single shift. I'm tired and I'm bitter and I'm quitting next month so I can take a break and re-allign myself.

He was and should be free to make his own decisions about his life. He choose to live a slightly more risky life by not getting the vaccine and he paid for it with his life. That is his choice and I will not criticize it. People skydive, build their own airplanes, hike across the country, race cars, ride motorcycles, Scuba dive, etc. All are choices and all increase your risk of serious injury. The government doesnt stop you from making these choices and they shouldnt force you to take any drug, vaccine, or even therapy you dont want. I have a relative that is arguably insane, 50 years ago she would be on a funny farm. The government will not force her to see a therapist or take any medication and while I would like her to get help, I support the government not forcing its help upon her. The homeless face the same issue, they dont know what is best for them and the government keeps letting them make poor decisions. When you catch an airborne contagious virus, you’ll spread it, putting other people’s lives at risk. That’s violating other people’s freedom of living a healthy life.
Besides, the longer we take to artificially build immunity (through vaccination), the longer it will take to restore economic productivity because of the safety measures necessary to stay alive, such as keeping distant and avoiding any physical interaction. Summing up, not getting vaccinated keeps you vulnerable, hurts or kills people around you and is bad for the economy too.
Furthermore, homeless people are subject to the same laws as us. I don’t understand which freedom to make poor decisions you’re talking about. For example, if they get drunk and hurt you, that’s a crime and they, by law, should be judged according to what they did (and it’s the same the other way around), right?

Because even at childbirth you are given medicine so you don't get any diseases, Such as every child or at least here in America and most modern places giving children hepatitis B vaccine within first 12 hours after birth. which acts as a safety net, reducing the risk of getting the disease from you or family members who may not know they are infected with hepatitis B.
We take vaccines because Natural selection has made it so that we can be able to think, reason, and use our brain cells to make vaccines so we can live, and be healthy.
crocodiles swallow rocks to help them with their digesting. This isn't a natural trait, they learned that from millions of years, and by doing so they would be able to digest food faster and more efficiently Because if they don't digest food in time they can die.

Everyone thinks they are the best and most healthy but when reality hits, you will wish you did everything you needed to protect yourself.
Because of improvements in vaccine making, the covid vaccine took a shorter time to make...
And what vaccine doesn't have side effects? People have been taking the flu shot for years and some people have side effects while others don't, Even so, the flu shot benefits outweigh the risk of you getting it... Plus how can you not trust the covid vaccine when it's legit 95% effective at protecting you from getting the virus, while also being 99% effective at stopping you from being sent to the hospital for a serious case.
And imagine this the flu shot is 66% while the covid vaccine is 95% effective, If you still don't trust it, That's on you.
Plus people being immune to the virus doesn't mean they can't spread the virus... Even if you are vaccinated you are still required to wear a mask since you can still spread the virus to unvaccinated people.
And how is the world experiencing "Biblical Natural disasters" Have to do with the vaccine? We are experiencing this because ignorant people like you, Are polluting the planet And putting co2 in the air by burning fossil fuels, while has caused a rise in global temperature, And they won't stop being they think they are "Immune", Which they are wrong because climate change won't affect only one person, It will affect everyone.
People "Freedom" Are getting themselves killed, the only people who shouldn't be forced to get the vaccine are people who are allergic to any of the substances used in it or people who can get serious side effects after taking it.
And I get that you are trying to make people feel like they have "freedom" And choices to not take the vaccines but you are legit killing them. How hard is it to just get a vaccine? Something that will help us get out of this pandemic so we can finally return to normal...

Hello everyone! I am here to invite you to come to God and be saved. Though the world may be very hard to deal with at times and many things are in it that challenge us, God tells us that if we follow Him and put our faith in Jesus Christ, being Baptized and repenting of our sins, we can be free from the evil of the world and experience new life in God. He is love and miss our protector and guide. Our sins have blocked us from knowing him truly but we can come to Him and be forgiven. Come to him and know his love, the Bible and the Holy Spirit can guide us, just study the Bible and test the Spirits with what it says. The true Spirit of God will lead us to the truth and help us know the right way to go. May God bless you and lead you in the Truth!🙂
