    There is one exception to this guide that I can think of. That is the 93-97 Corolla with the 1.6L or 1.8L 4 cylinder. The front cover is metal and the valve cover extends over it however it is a timing belt. Requires a new valve cover gasket when the belt is changed. Not sure why they did that, just know that they did. Always has to be one exception to the rule right haha

    My 1981 Dodge Colt had a belt & the engine had to be removed to change it. Dealer wanted $500 (in 1985) I found a mechanic who would do it for $400 but he wasn't careful about lining up the gear teeth to the belt so the distributor cap & rotor burned up & stranded me every 40-60 miles. Took it to another mechanic who removed the engine again & reinstalled the belt correctly for $500. That was the last vehicle I owned with a timing belt. The purpose of a timing belt is to make more money for the dealer every 60K miles.

    really burns me that manufacturers are still ripping their own customers off with needless maintenance ?
    Why build a car with a belt ?
    by the time the job is done the mechanic has screwed you for nearly a grand ,they always change the water pump and tensioners .Just on that fact I avoid cars with belts no matter how good their supposed to be .
    Even Honda has no excuse , only the CRV has a chain from my research , what a load of crap .Not only are customers faced with eighty to hundred dollar per hour shop charge , but forced to do unnecessary maintenance at that .
    If you dont change the belt then you'll really be screwed , with a telephone pole .

    • @eehhh3791
      @eehhh3791 Před 8 lety

      not just that some belts break way before 40ks. When they said it should last every 80k. Chain takes the stress off knowing when it will break or not because if it does, Its the chain that broke and not having to worry about how many ks you;'ve done with a belt and all that bs.

    • @field33P
      @field33P Před 8 lety +4

      Belts are cheaper to fit (and in case of Volkswagen Group products, probably safer too). In a market with ever-decreasing margins and increasingly competitiveness it makes sense to make it a regular maintenance part.
      also the water pump and tensioners are replaced at the same time because they usually have around the same maintenance intervals as a belt, and it saves time and money. With chains they are on the same schedule.

    • @bustedpeanut
      @bustedpeanut Před 6 lety +1

      In the case of Honda t-belt vehicles, it’s better to go ahead and replace the tensioner and water pump when you get your t-belt replaced. Reasons why....
      The water pump is driven and covered by the t-belt. So if your pump fails 10k miles after you’ve done a t-belt, and opted out of pump replacement, you’re looking at spending just as much in labor as you did for the belt replacement. Why pay $800 twice, when you can knock it all out in one shot? The pump and the tensioner aren’t THAT expensive.
      Next reason... Honda t-belts are scheduled for replacement at 105k miles... so is your coolant. When I take your water pump off, I lose most of your coolant, too.
      So, when you come in to the dealership for a new t-belt, you’re also getting a coolant replacement, a new water pump, and a new t-belt tensioner. Most of the cost is labor.... the parts are cheap(ish). Personally, I’d knock out 5 birds with one stone and happily hand my service advisor my visa for a job well done.

    • @josephknotts8618
      @josephknotts8618 Před 6 lety +2

      I've been working in shops for 15 years now. We are not out to get you it makes no sense to not replace the tensioner and water pump while you are in there to replace the belt. And I have seen it before someone wanted to save some money by not changeing the water pump then 8k miles later there goes the water pump and guess what you have to pay the labor to replace it after the tech was already in there. So just spend a little extra money and you will have a pice of mind. I've also worked on other cheap person's car that didn't want to change the belt when the water pump failed so I replace the pump and then about 20k miles later the belt broke. Also depending on the engine if the belt snaps its not the end of the engine as long as it is a non- intereferince engine.

      Depending on the design of the engine yes. With my experience of a certified automotive technician if it is an pushrod engine. Those chains tend to last the life of the vehicle. While most ohc (over head cam) engines tend to need more maintenance do to worn out tensioner ,chain guides and some engines have a timing chain driven water pump as well.

      Timing chains stretch over time and gears , tensioners and guides wear out quickly.
      Manufacturing is the problem because they want you to buy a new vehicle.
      Most timing chains need replacement around 150000 miles… or you can destroy your engine completely

      It's a serpentine belt that runs off your crank shaft, water pump, power steering, alternator and so on. Hope this helps you out. You should also change this belt once you start to see wear. Usually there's a pulley that you can use a 3/8 socket wrench that will let you release the tension on the belt so you can change it out. But if you think it's to much work take it to someone that can do for you.
