Our government is not an English government, all foreign governments allow and encourage drugs so long as the get there share nail bars barbers etc money laundering drugs tax man gets his share 😊
I did a youth opportunity programme as it was called in ped tube that was on the site where asda and the other stores were,it was a massive works, the offices were over brickhouse lane where the McDonald's is situated,I remember there used to be two beehive pubs one at the top of brickhouse Lane and on on the corner of Charles street at the bottom
Only just spotted this one, very interesting. I knew Great Bridge well in the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. Sad to see it as it is now. My mental pictures of the place as it was then are still intact. I remember the Limerick and the railway bridge near to it, I also remember Roman Mosaic at Burnt Tree. The only bit that looks familiar now is the building near to the river bridge, which was a bank. Just up from the railway bridge in New Road was a slaughterhouse - called Devis's, if my memory is correct. There was also a little pub which the locals called The Fourpenny Shop - or, more correctly in the local accent The 'Fowpnee Shap'. Near to that was the Tipton Tavern, which was a very popular pub back then. Yes, Great Bridge was a vibrant place in those days, with a solid population that were mostly employed in the numerous local industries. A microcosm of much of the country I fear.
The internet hasn’t helped in fact I think it’s expedited the change, where I live in Bournemouth most of the banks have closed their branches and these older buildings have been turned into pubs clubs and gaming centres with slot machines and such like. It just brings the area down and then people start doing there shopping online and the big stores start closing ie Debenhams M&S Beales just adds to the decline.
Totally agree, used to enjoy walking around Beales sad when that closed down. Large closure buildings are a major issue as to what to do with them. But the councils/landlords seem to lack direction as to what to do with them, so they tend to remain empty for years creating decline and decay which tends to bring a lot of the area into a state of neglect. This is highlighted in parts of lower High Street West Brom which I will be filming shortly. Appreciate your comments
The indoor market was quaint. I recall the «Gt Bridge Stone Henge» as always being a car park, which you would imagine would service the cinema perhaps

Could you do Dartmouth Park showing where the bandstand, kiosk, boat house and other things used to be. I used to go fishing there - usually at the South East corner of the boating lake. I remember the music playing over the water to the young couples in the boats. And the funfairs there used to be.
@@awalkwithphil Be good if you can include some old pictures (boating, fishing, funfairs etc). Does the 252 bus still run from West Brom High street to the Shireland road/Portland road Smethwick/Birmingham border? You know, the pale blue single decker. I think it went along Roebuck lane.

It’s a bit like Great Britain not so great now and with successive governments not doing anything to help with the situation.
Anyone remember Goulds Records on the Corner past Hughs and Holmes. I knew Phil Gould vaguely.
Back in the 1950s I drove a delivery van for Hughes and Holmes.
I loved Hughes and Holmes sad that they are now just a memory, many thanks for the comment

The mothers enable this behaviour and blame others for their failures. And so do their sons ..

wiki is wrong as it just says it's in tipton, "near west bromwich" which is wrong
Hi Phil I remember Wellington Tube works and I worked in the town at Hollowoods and a firm called Bradelieigh Products by the old loyds Bank
Tragic to see so many great industries disappear from a once prosperous Great Bridge

Dartmouth Park is on my list. I am hoping to film there when the weather is hot and sunny hopefully over the next 2/3 weeks. Thanks for the suggestion
