It is possible that in a society in some far future, women might have more advantages over men and a matriarchy might happen like shown in this movie. In the modern society, because of modern medecine, childbirth isn't dangerous and is controllable, and women can already give birth without men. Interesting film but a few things to note:
According to this plot, a woman would constantly become pregnant throughout her entire life. This means a single woman unless she takes something to end the pregnancies would be unable to do jobs that would require her to not be pregnant for the sake of the fetus. Additionally, having that many children would quickly overwhelm all infrastructure in place for humanity and the world would end up very very overpopulated. And finally, the lack of genetic diversity would lead to enormous portions of the population being wiped out very quickly regarding disease.
Also, the entire premise of ending space exploration with such a rapidly expanding population, to "save the earth" is so downright laughable...its honestly bemusing.

    • @yungnachty4474
      @yungnachty4474 Před 2 lety +146

@Busy Bodies! Yes, jobs that are heavily demanding physically or that regularly result in people getting knocked about or engaging in other tasks...perhaps deep sea diving for months at a time where not only would the pregnancy itself strain the individual, other side effects like weight gain and fatigue would impair their ability to do jobs they could do if they were not pregnant. This isn't even considering the difference in bone and muscle density between men and women and that when a woman becomes sufficiently physically active she will actually stop menstruating, temporarily due to hormonal imbalance. Which would end the genetic lines of any woman doing hard manual labor or shrink it considerably, which would make genetic diversity even less.
Also, prengnancy brain occurs when women become pregnant, in studies conducted, the grey matter responsible for socialization, cognition, memory and problem solving all shrink. So the world would become significantly dumber. Likely because a lot of nutrients that would go to a woman's brain instead is diverted to the fetus. Now have this happen indefinitely for their whole lives. It would be a health crisis of malnutrition.

One of the biggest diffrence is child birth and it affects woman allot. I doubt they could do allot of the high stain abuse jobs while in the 8 month of pregnancy. Now the movie probably consider that theres so many woman that theres always someone that can fullfill the job that aint pregnant.
But it doesnt really mention that. However maybe it's a detail that not necesary for the plot of the movie.

All the women are producing clones of themselves after all, but that means if there are a lot of different women, that there will be a lot of genetically distinct individuals after 1 generation, and 2, and 3. It will take a long time, probably thousands of years, for the number of distinct DNA profiles to dwindle from billions to under a million let alone 1000.

Correct. Species that do this usually do it as a last ditch attempt to save themselves. For example there was a flower that can only be pollinated by a certain species of bee. The bee went extinct so the flower species resorted to asexual reproduction.
This is a death sentence for any species. Even single-cell organisms exchange genetic material in some way. Sexual reproduction, like aerobic metabolisms can be far superior (in the right conditions) to asexual reproduction and anaerobic metabolisms, respectively.

There is one exception to the extinction of secondarily asexual species, the bdelloid rotifers who gain genetic variation by fragmenting their DNA and picking up environmental DNA! If the premise of the film happened humans would definitely figure out how to introduce additional variation artificially well before we died out bc any trend towards extinction would be infinitesimally slow given how much we've mitigated a lot of evolutionary pressures in modern society and how massive our starting population is :p

Hm... a number of questions come up. A lot in fact, here are some of them:
-Premise is unusual, why would a number of woman all over suddenly develop this condition? Normally, big changes like this can take millions of years through evolution, yet this only happen in a few decades?
-We must also take into account that since these woman are not conceiving via sexual means that problems can come in the picture via repetition. Lack of genetic diversity means that all it takes is for one pathogen to wipe them out and thats it.
-If the women are reproducing asexually, then that means they are effectively giving birth to clones? So genetic defects over time become more and more prominent. Because men could potentially be extinct at that point there is no way to correct.
-There is also no mention of the frequency of asexual, uncontrollable, births. Population would explode like mad, leading to shortage of resources. You'd have to shift to a very simplistic way of life to even try to sustain that. And even then, a controlled one.
    - Women have periods monthly, this implies that the women would become pregnant, possibly even as young as 12 to 14 years old or even a little younger. Wrap that around your head and see just how scary the situation is. Imagine as a father your 13 year old daughter is pregnant because of this sudden change! Now it happens every cycle!
Eventually, all somatic cells that divide and reproduce can end up hitting certain point where their genetic code starts to deteriorate. So I am guessing that stem cells somehow curve or prevent that? I dunno, this is just a movie after all. But I don't think that men would take slavery lying down, they'd use their skill, knowledge, and physical abilities to their advantage in combat and survival situations.
Movie is very interesting nonetheless, but I would love to see the reasoning behind its premise get more fleshed out.
